It was set-up like a comedy roast... He knew what he was going in for and had to play the part of getting annoyed but you could see he really wanted to laugh.
Just imagine that THIS GUY is able to make people laugh for 5 minutes straight without any stupidity and with grace. One thing that strikes me is that Rowan stood up to greet elton. It's a small thing, but i think it shows a great deal of respect. You don't really see that on TV now.

That gun was supposed to create a sound. But it malfunctioned hence Rowan was confused for a moment and yet dropped down as in the script. Elton realised and shouted bang to cover up the delay.
