I concur. Tesla will do what takes to sell everything they can build so they get as close to zero in units in their inventory. Tesla has the luxury of starting to scale to mass production. Telsa will raise prices if they can’t manufacture enough units. So the effects of what they are doing in the marketplace could help put other OEMs out of business especially ICE legacy corporations with heavy investments in ICE manufacturing and EV startup who just done make it. Keep in mind Tesla’s mission is to transition to BEVs as quickly as possible so they need other OEMs to help with the transition but that doesn’t mean Tesla’s executives (especially Elon) and Board aren’t paying attention to finances.

I know EV fans are all saying "demand is good" and Tesla saying "we don't want to put competition out of business". But in reality putting competition out of business IS the goal. Either Tesla eats the competition, or the competition will eat Tesla. The idea is to grow profits for the shareholders, and nothing else. If it wasn't, people would not invest in Tesla.
Just like Biden saying he wants to secure the border, that is what people want to hear, but we all know Biden's goal is to keep the border open.

This includes a trip to Michigan where all of my family is still working for or retired from the Big Three. Everyone there uses range as a reason for not going EV. The Volt wad the perfect bridge, and when GM killed it, I knew they were done. I hope they are around long enough to cover my parents' retirement years. Great interview.

I live in a house and charge at home.
      I have a Model Y Performance.
      The car gets so few miles of range, I charge it E V E R Y S I N G L E D A Y.
I have never gone a single day without charging it because I know it won't have enough juice to get me through 2 days of driving. I don't have that problem with my ICE BMW M3. I may fill it once every 7-10 days.
If I can't even get through 2 days with a Model Y without juicing, I would by FAR rather "lug around extra battery" and feel extremely comfortable that I can go an ENTIRE 2 DAYS doing whatever normal life tasks I do and not run out of juice.
I don't care what e-lawn wants. The motto is supposed to be "The customer is ALWAYS right" I am the customer, and I want at minimum 500 miles of USABLE range.
If I lived in an apartment, there's no way in hail I would buy an electric vehicle. If I had to drive to a supercharger every other day, there's no way in hail I'd buy an electric vehicle. 250 "usable" miles is nowhere near enough to get a shht ton of people to give up their ICE cars.
Meanwhile, my Model X will be here sometime this month, and my millies in Tesluh stock are staying put. I still deeply hayt e-lawn's "the customer is always WRONG" approach to EVs. He clearly knows nothing about ordinary lives and ordinary needs.

When batteries were expensive there might’ve been a case for an on-board generator but as every year goes by the cost of the battery goes down and the generator stays the same or goes up along with the gasoline to run it. I knew about Vinfast 5 years ago, when they were planning to expand. The problem with Vinfast, is that you have to buy the car, then pay to buy the battery or to lease their batteries through a subscription. Unfortunately, they are not priced low enough to make that model viable.
If their costs the same as Tesla, why would you want to purchase them? You still need to lease their batteries after purchasing.

That is just a hybrid! What do you think the generator is that charges the battery as you drive along? It is of course just an ice engine turning a generator to generate electricity. it may have a little different form factor and configuration compared to other hybrids, but the ice engine turning the generator suffers from all the inefficiencies of any ice engine - and emits all of the same pollutants.

But when we talk about regulation in the future, I think autonomous vehicles will be the norm and the regulation will be placed on human drivers to make sure that only the most vigorous and alert drivers are allowed to drive on roads that are 90% driven by autonomous vehicles. No more grandmas and grandpas on the road. Most humans won’t have the reaction time to drive on roads with inches of tolerance between vehicles, which AI will handle with ease!

I don’t subscribe to the idea of a prize war.
This wouldn’t sustain Teslas goal to transition the world to sustainable energy. Elon once said „we can’t do this alone“.
That’s, why Tesla opened its patents to others or sent them a manual for transition to 48 Volt system in their cars.
The only reason for Tesla driving down prizes is, to keep up demand and tackle this time of high interest rates and inflation.
If they would instead just lower their production rate, they would not only sell less cars, but loose the advantage of the economy of scale.
So, Tesla decided that’s better to keep up the production rate and sell more cars for a lower price and sacrifice a part of their exceptional margin, which is a competitive advantage, because other companies can’t afford such strategy because of no or even negative margins.

All markets are different, of course, but in the US they probably won't be needed for more than a few years. The Tesla supercharger network is expanding rapidly while battery capacities continue to grow. The number of use cases where range extenders are desirable will dwindle into just edge cases.

As far as VinFast, I still remain highly skeptical. Their pivot to a dealership franchise model already creates a weakness. I get Tesla and maybe Rivian seem to the only ones making that work, but cutting out the greed of the dealers means you can retail your products at lower prices and still turn a healthy profit.
I also do not think VinFast has offered innovation. I get they built a new factory a few years ago, but that was a factory still doing ICE as well as EV. Sandy Munro spoke of the challenges of using an ICE factory to do EV.
Apparently a few years ago VinFast was going to take on the Australian market, bought land and some other assets and then shutdown everything there.
Maybe having a CEO that is already wealthy might help. In theory it would make him less influenced by Wall Street which should mean more able to plan for the long-term and stick to the plan.
It is goid for consumers to have many options, so hopefully VinFast is better than what I think. Tme will tell the truth about VinFast.

Thus, Tesla has no choice but to reduce its price on every model. Also, Tesla has built up many factories and many suppliers, a company can’t just stop or substantially reduced its manufacturing capacity without negative consequences. Therefore, Tesla just makes the best out of a difficult situation. I am surprised & very disappointed a guy like you Mike called yourself an entrepreneur 😮

Those two problems are number one Chinese government subsidies which the European government is investigating right now, and the concern that their cars are gathering data on the drivers which is a huge concern in the USA. In both cases, this could stunt their progress in both markets substantially in the future.

They added pricey add ons and other costs to pump up the prices and their profits.

Michael Dunne is wrong, Tesla is simply following it's stated master plan to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport. Tesla is not engaging in a price war, it is lowering prices to increase TAM and therefore EV penetration as stated in it's mission statement and master plan. Any damage to other EV start ups and legacy OEMs is simply unintended collateral damage! I agree price cuts will continue until the automotive and energy industries have been completely transitioned. This is all clearly stated in the master plan and mission statement and should not be a surprise to anyone. The difference is that Tesla will not stop cutting prices and costs even if ALL competition is eradicated.

  • @brunosmith6925

While it's tempting to infer that Tesla's price reductions are principally aimed at "destroying the competition", I do not believe this is even a secondary or even tertiary objective.
    1. Tesla reduces prices because it can, and price reductions are chiefly to retain sales volume. It's important that the pace of production is maintained (improved) for many reasons, mainly COGS and economies of scale.
    2. Tesla announced nearly 20 years ago (in 2006) via their "secret master plan" that a core objective was to make increasingly affordable EV's.
    3. Tesla has sufficient margin to adapt pricing to factor in prevailing macro market conditions. Currently, economic pressures and high interest rates make a new car (EV or otherwise) out of reach of many consumers. Because Tesla has very little debt and billions in the bank, Tesla can afford to drop prices and take a hit on margins, and still remain highly profitable.
    4. Tesla is far more keen to see other automakers succeed in the EV sphere. The "competition" is not other EV makers - it's ICE cars.
Michael Dunn seem like a really nice guy - but I think his perspective on the future of automotive is jaundiced because of his long-standing involvement in the traditional OEM sector.
Vinfast is risky, and in my view, has no future. Like ALL carmakers who are incapable of leveraging FSD and AI autonomy into their vehicles, Vinfast will "evaporate-fast" when the need to own a car disappears.
Dunn says "Vinfast recognises the future is electric cars"... Nonsense!
The future is about autonomy and AI integration. Tesla won the "EV race" over a decade ago. A few have made reasonable efforts to emulate this, but effectively, the future is robotaxis.
It will not matter if these robotaxis are powered by hydrocarbons, electrons, hydrogen, nuclear fusion, bottled-fart or fermented unicorn urine... The public won't care... All we will care about is easy, convenient, comfortable, safe and VERY CHEAP TRANSPORT, and when this happens we will increasingly STOP purchasing the actual car.
