Shannon Forrest has been the best choice Toto did to play live the songs recorded by Jeff Porcaro, same powerful, precise, groovy and dynamic style. No other drummer has been even close.
Glad to hear someone giving a heads up to the great Ritchie Hayward, not enough people have heard him, but he had a better feel than any other drummer i heard. A great example that really puzzled me when i heard it, is an early number by Little Feat, Sailin' Shoes. A very simple quite slow song, but exactly the kind of 'inbetween' sixteenths/swung rhythm you are talking about here. I never heard anything like that song before or since. And i never heard any other drum teacher talk about this subject, so many thanks. I heard Little Feat a couple of times in London in the mid 1970s, and then after i moved to the USA and LA area in the 1990s, i heard them several times more doing small open air gigs, at benefit events for a community theatre project, Theatrum Botanicum, up in Topanga Canyon in the California coastal mountains ( where i was living, and a place where the Little Feat guys had lived for years). An amazing band, such a great rhythmic feel, you would never think they were an LA band, more likely New Orleans, i just wish they were (even) better known.
Thanks Shannon-really appreciate this. Love your new project and please come to Vancouver Canada. So much to unpack here. Consistent 16 th notes need not only endurance of forearm muscles but hand and finger technique as well as hi hat , snare and throne heights. Perhaps a further discussion on that subject as well as practicing slower first. It’s really difficult to emulate that feel and execute unless a drummer focuses on fundamentals first practices slowly then play the same pattern daily until the endurance is built and the feel can then be replicated. I agree about playing along to the greats( including you) but until I went back to the practice pad concepts I could never shuffle worth a damn😎
You know the man's into it when he makes faces like that! I'm self conscious about how I look when I play, but to truly give the audience all of yourself you gotta just give 'er and get over it I guess. Man, Shannon, you've got touch and tone for days...just love it!
Hi Shannon 😊 nice to see you back 😊 I have a few questions for you.. 1. In one interview you did a while back, talking about Jeff, you emphasized his "confidence" while playing, what does that mean in a practical way on the instrument? Like, he always knew and felt what to play? 2. You mentioned he basically played "Hooks" .. can you give an example on the drums what a hook is and how to develop it to play like that?. 3. When playing toto material, how do you approach interpreting Jeff's fills to still make it your own? .. thx 😊
Hey shannon would love to see how you mic and mix your drums. Also love to see your process of how get you get your snare sound as I love you sound and would love to replicate it
what an incredibly valuable lesson, the rolling Richie Hayward thing has always sounded so hip, so many variations too. thanks for taking the time to share, that is very kind. Moroccan rhythms very cool, bring it on master.
Every aspect of this is masterful, but to me the most enlightening concept is the phrasing. Where the figures begin and end is just so inventive. Thank you.
Nice timing through the sixteenth note shuffles. How do you get to the stage were the arms don't feel tense and everything flows relaxed, im stuck ,I can play 16th shuffle beats but my arm always gets tense and tires. Great video thanks for posting
It's either "square" or "swung" or "sqwung" or "swunk" and the Bo Diddley clave and the groove from DMB's number "Lie in our graves" with Carter Beauford behind the trap set.
Hey Brother........I can't imagine the muscle control and stamina you have to have to play this high hat beat for 10 minutes straight?? AND have it be so consistent!! ALSO, I listened to the loudness of the left hand Snare accent beat, and.....by the way you hold the stick.....I bet you $ 5 that your Left Thumb was the one that got that Blister on.....on the European tour these last months!!! Musings of an old Cunga player - what do I know? You are a PRO's PRO!! I heard a lot of what your solos sounded like the last tour - Swiss Triplets rule!!! ON BUSINESS ....I will message you......I am very close to the $$ (so effin long).....and I am editing down all the finished Vids into 20 and 30 second cuts....I will send those out to you and J when done for your approval....so the SM can be blanketed......I know you are down in South America till Thanksgiving....Good luck on this leg....We will drill down on stuff in DEC I hope....Be safe, Dave GREAT VIDEO!!
Thank you for a great instruction video. I have been following you for years now and in one of your performances with The Dukes of September you are playing Kid Charlemagne. (New York Lincoln Center) Please give us a lesson on what you do with the hi-hat, it is so cool. th-cam.com/video/83IX8iKd_28/w-d-xo.html Next time you come to Oslo with ToTo, lets go and have some real Norwegian fresh seafood again, hopefully we dont have to wait so long for the food this time ...!

Really enjoying the videos!! Do you have any tips for keeping time (with or without metronome)? especially consistency between kick and snare?
thanks so lot , shannon ,

James Gadson did that work with Marvin Gaye groove 💯🎼🥁
I’ll try it! Great video Shannon! 🙂
Bello/Magnifico.🙏✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️✡️👑
Do you change your body movements/posture to create feels that are not natural to you?
Love the channel. 😊

19:12 so true “interrupted the conversation”
Sweet! It is slightly like the intro to McD's Blink of An Eye.

What ‘ears’ do you use? Are they etymotic?
