The timing in your groove playing and drum break soloing in the intro of this video: picture perfect! An adjective that comes to my mind to describe byoir playing: quality. Quality describes your touch and feel and tuning and approach to drumming. High wuality stuff you showcase here my friend
First step, have a good room to record in. What would you do if you’re in a small square room, like a bedroom? I’ve tried room mics in every position, in the closet and other adjacent rooms, and nothing sounds very good.
I like the way you explain things, thank you!
Just found your you tube vids. Man such a great explanation of the different lost drum set nuance's , very cool! love ya drumimg, thanks for the info.
I thought that was gated verb, but it was the mono room mic, sounds heavily gated, phil collins talkback mic🙃
Thanks for doing this Shannon. Your drums sound amazing and that mono room mic certainly makes the sound. 🥁
That snare is just ridiculously amazing. I have no other description. Just ridiculous amazing.
What model make is that drum kit?
Love your drum room! Thanks for the insight.
Qué me recomendás? Abrazo! Felices fiestas
What us he looking serious, smile boy
Needs more stank-face
That mono room mic is huge. Almost has a gated verb thing going on. Sounds great!
Fantástico. Incrível som de bateria, tudo em seu devido lugar. Que sala maravilhosa!
Thank you Shannon!
What in ears are you using? Etymotic?
I saw Shannon with Journey/Toto earlier this year-he was amazing!
Breakdown of TOTO songs drum parts! Or live drum cam !
5 room mics? : 2 far wide stereo (limited?) 1 center far, limited 2 overhead, limited and comitted to 1 mono track Is that correctly understood? And then you blend them to taste in the mix right ?
And thank you When I heard you with Toto I thought "Great they finally found the drummer to bring back the spirit of Porcaro" Simon Phillips is great of course but differs from Porcaro's time feel where you capture it completely.
Dig the compression pumping going on......
thanks for sharing your knowledge, you are the Master!!
Something about players that use their mouth to mimic playing always seem to be the best players. Guitarists do this too. Shannon is a legend man. I'm so glad he is opening up about this stuff. I know he spent a lot of time and effort on that room and studio though. Also digging the pearl set ups lately
What a kit, love to see a deep dive into how you eq and compress etc. Actual kit mics eg snare and Tom's. Also what do you think of using only a sm57 for a snare for a live gig. Would it need to have a secondary mic on the snare.
Shannon, wow man. Hands down I think you have the most amazing drum sounds. This was fascinating to see and learn from. How many people are scrambling over to Reverb now, hahah! Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Thanks, Shannon, for the inside view, it confirms how I mic my kit, very similarly!! Good to know I'm doing it right! Hey I use the Pearl Eliminator pedals also!! Cool!!
This was cool 🤘😎🤘Love that mono room sound!! I’ve just discovered you from your last couple videos! your such a smooth player man! I’d love to hear your thoughts on getting into the right mindset when your playing? I often struggle while playing to be thinking too much about what I’ve just played , or what I’m about to play. Keep up the great content 👍 -John M
Shannon, is the kit packed at all; (blanket? Pillow?)
The Snare mic is the BeyerDynamic M201!
Digging the Bonham lick when you went to the far room mics.
Thank you for this, Shannon! Regards From Brazil
Really interesting, thank you so kindly. Your Set and your Room sounds amazing.
Probably, the best sounding drums on youtube I'd say
In the beginning , Is he in pain playing. Looks like he hurts or is pulling a muscle or something. Good info. In video
That’s just Shannon call it Shannon’s drummer face.
Im a new fan of Shannon’s, I love the drum faces too! IMO it’s a sign of greatness ! it looks to me like he’s found a way to repress his thoughts while playing, something I’m trying to learn how to achieve
@@johnmiller3804 good for you , which this wasn’t about, however, when you do find , if your found “look”, makes your face look like your constipated, someone comment on that . Good or bad , just in their opinion not yours
Yes sir!❤
Thanks for the rundown!! I was woundering about those tom mics but now i know!! Thanks! What brand iems do you use? Cheers from Sweden
Hey! Thank you I use sennheiser ie4 live and studio. Have for 20 years or more.
@ thanks! Keep it up love your content!
Very cool to find this in my TH-cam recommendations this morning. I initially became aware of you from your work on Tom Bukovac's _Plexi Soul._ I loved your playing and drum sounds on it and I've enjoyed catching up on your work since tyen. This video was great and I look forward to the next one you mentioned going through your signal path to tape and processing. Since hearing your work on _Plexi Soul,_ I've been enamored with the sound you get from your cymbals. They seem to always have this lovely (apologies for all the incoming metaphors poorly trying to describe what I'm talking about), breathy sizzle in their wash and decay. A kind of bloom that whenever I've heard it on cymbals I always say; oh man that cymbal has that "gas" on it. Almost like the bloom, wash and decay have just a _bit_ of the sound of pressured steam being vented or bacon being fried. Understanding of course that you mentioned using minimal processing when recording drums, I'm interested to hear if you have any thoughts on how you achieve it. Is it simply a matter of your choice of cymbals and the way in which you're playing them, or is there anything else you're doing insofar as the engineering? I'm also _very_ curious about the compressor/limiter you're using on your mono room mic because for my money it sounded _fantastic._ Thanks man, glad to be aboard. 🍻
Pure gold, thank you Shannon!
sounds amazing! would love to see how you tune your drums
Thank you for the video !! looking forward to watch part 2. also Uncle Larry's sticker on the kick make the whole drum sounds more polished !!! lol
最高にcool👍👍👍🎉やばい!
Can you share you cymbalsetup?
AWESOME !
Those faces 😂
Thought he pulled a muscle or is in pain. Maybe got gas in the ass😂he needs to pass
Thank you Shannon !!! These videos I'm getting so much out of them. I'm trying to dial my groove and sound.... you are sharing your hard work and I'm so thankful for you taking the time to do this. Wow!!. I love the processing on your mono room and the coles as well!
James Gadson did that work with Marvin Gaye groove 💯🎼🥁
Right on Shannon happy holidays & good cheer solid grooving 💯🎼🥁⛄️🎄🧑🏾🎄😎✌️
Love it Shannon! 👏
Last week I spent a couple of hours looking for screenshots of that tom mic and google images to find the reference that Shannon just said! It was a famous microphone known as -Elvis microphone- from the 70s. Thanks for this info and all this other details! The overall sound is so great!
man that snare sounds so good
Were the solo tracks EQ and compressed? Or were they the flat, Raw sounds? Great stuff, looking forward to the next one
