He's left-handed, obviously he's playing a left-handed drum kit. I know there are some left-handed musicians that play right-handed instruments but Phil is not one of them. 🙂
I myself am a drummer, also left handed; but I play right handed. Been playing for 44 years. It's a gift. I started playing at the age of 4....now 48. Don't know how to read nor write music I do it all by ear.
I was so lucky to be raised in 80s when I was listening Phil Collins so much. His live performances were absolutely fantastic you saw a man who really enjoyed every moment on the stage and with public. God bless him for all he did for music.
Ok this track was approx 2/3 of the way into the concert. He had to leave the stage to be fitted with the mic/ headset, hence the extended intro with each instrument introducing itself. Phil wrote the music and lyrics, he is one of only three artists that have sold over 100 million albums as a member of a band and another 100 million plus albums as a solo artist. The song was written about his very painful divorce, he returned from touring early to discover his wife was being unfaithful. They never saw him he just left. He describes himself as a drummer that can sing a bit. Oh he also plays keyboards. He is also the only person that performed at BOTH live aid concerts, first at Wembley in London then catching Concorde to perform at the Philadelphia Concert. You really should check out some Genesis tracks and his solo stuff. You won’t be disappointed. Sadly Phil can no longer play the drums due to an injury but his son is almost indistinguishable. And like Pink Floyd his concert sound quality is absolutely first class hardly distinguishable from studio.
I remember that. If my memory serves me right Crockett & Tubbs were driving along the highway around Miami at night, weird how that sticks in the mind.
Phil Collin’s was, quite literally, all over the radio in the late 80s early 90s. Between him and his former band Genesis, he sang close to every 5 songs on air.
You're right, he is a kind soul. He has done a lot of work helping the homeless and has wrote songs about it. When most of us try not to make eye contact he shined a light on them. Beautiful man.
Welcome to the world of Genesis. This is your entrance to the Genesis universe - Phil, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford (Mike & The Mechanics), Tony Banks and Steve Hackett. Phil Collins is one of 3 musicians ever who have sold more than 100 million albums both individually and as a member of a group (Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson are the other two). Phil was really one of the BIG stars of Live Aid in 1985. He performed in London by himself- and with Sting. He left on a helicopter got on The Concord, and flew to Philadelphia. He performed solo again in Philly, then drummed with Eric Clapton and with Led Zeppelin. You have just taken the first step into a new world. Check out Peter Gabriel live with “In Your Eyes,” the Genesis Live at Wembly with “Abacab.” Welcome to the club!!
This is as iconic and as famous as Stairway To Heaven. No clue on how anyone hasn't at least heard it in passing. Having said that, great reaction to such a fantastic song.
I am currently 61 years old. No matter how many times I hear Phil Collins sing this song, my mind takes me back to age 21 in 1984 (The golden year of the best decade ever) and swooning from watching the pilot episode of Miami Vice.
Phil is a consummate musician and song writer! He had an amazing solo career, from 1980 onwards, but he was also the drummer and singer for the legendary Prog/Classic Rock band called Genesis. Have you not heard of Genesis? They were huge in the 70s and 80s. Phil is considered one of the best Rock and Fusion drummers of all time. He's right up there with John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Carl Palmer, among other elite players. But he's also written tons of great Rock, Pop, and Ballad songs. Boy, does this guy know how to write a "tear-your-heart-out" ballad. Ugh, kills me! So, please, by all means, get to know more Phil Collins, Genesis, and...if you are feeling adventurous, check out Phil's Fusion band called Brand X! Oh, and he's also got a Big Band album out there too! He's amazing! A Genesis song you should check out could be "Squonk" from 1976, or "The Lady Lies" from 1978, or "Mama" from 1983. Watching Live videos will really be fun, if you can do that. Another Phil solo song you should check out is called "I Don't Care Anymore" (from 1983). The last thing I'll say is that this foray into Genesis will also expose you to another amazing, world-famous singer, Peter Gabriel. He was the singer with Genesis before he left in 1975 (from 1967 - 1975). You really have opened a wider world of music and culture Stacey! Enjoy!
How does anyone not know this song? It's been a classic for over 35 years. I'm not slamming you. It's just wow. Phil is a musical icon. Glad you found him.
Find the segment on "Miami Vice" that this was written for and you might understand it better although you might need to watch the entire episode to really get it." The moment" is when somebody dies.
@@MichaelMiller-eg5dr This was not written for Miami Vice. It was used in an episode, Brother's Keeper, in a scene where Crockett goes to meet a drug dealer. That's as close as it gets.
"Another day in paradise" is one of his that you HAVE to experience. It did so much to raise awareness for the plight of the homeless around the world and I find it impossible to not get caught up in the emotions that song stirs. I think it would be a great fit for you and your channel.
This is THE rabbit hole. "I don't care anymore" "I can't dance" "Sussudio" "Turn it on again" "One More Night" "Against all odds" and that's just a start. He's a pro's pro.
It is really interesting seeing your expressions, as Phil Collins has been doing this to us for more years than I care to remember. I think most fans can tell you where and when they first heard this.
You can hear the slight haunting in this masterpiece, the haunting of emotions that comes after breaking up, getting divorced, realizing that the relationship there ones was, is gone forever.
I remember on Miami Vice, this song kicked in when they driving to the big shotout scene, and Sony calls Carolin and asked her" I need to know, it was real, wasn't it?" She says yes, she knows something's wrong but he won't tell her anything. He then drives to the shootout and like 20 guys get killed, but they get out of it alive. Man that show, was the first show to put real songs on tv and they played all the hits coming out at the time, it just added to the experence and changed tv forever and the movies also.
We grewup in such such good times in 80s 90s so very much musical tallant of all types ethnics soso much good tv feels like it genuinelly disapperead earlly 2000s ish dont think its my age either i think there was much more TALLENT SKILL EMOTION DEDICATION SPIRIT 💯👍👍👍👍👍👍
Anyone else recalling The Cadbury gorilla right now? the whole audience knew what was coming but thought he would never make it... A man who gave his whole life to drumming and entertaining fans all over the world but sadly paid the price by destroying his back. An utter legend and a proper geezer. And we totally understand why you were drawn in and then hit as we all were the first time. Nicely reacted!
One of the coolest drum parts that plays perfectly on his concert toms. That Gretsch kit had a signature "bark," really prominent on that track. You always knew when Phil was on a song in the 80s.
Phil Collins was also in Live Aid with Queen. Live Aid was an international show with stage performances around the world. Phil Collins first performed at Wembley Stadium in London. He then went by the Concorde to perform in Philadelphia.
I'm a simple man: ---I see a beautiful girl reacting to my favorite musician, I click. ---I see a beautiful girl enjoying the performance from my favorite musician, I like. ---I see a beautiful girl thoroughly converted by the talents of Mr. Phil Collins and an eagerness to listen to more of him and his work, I subscribe! So glad you like, Stacey and I'm so glad I clicked on! In addition to his solo work, don't forget to check out his work as a member of the rock band Genesis. Its a rich rabbit hole worth investigating! Great reaction...and beautiful eyes! lol
The timing of "He hasn't played the drums yet" 30 seconds before the most iconic drum fill of all time hahaha If you want more like this, check out Mama by Genesis (Phil was the vocalist of Genesis before he went solo), it's a similar vibe to this song. Quite dark and drum-heavy. His discography is so wide ranging from Disney soundtracks, 25 minute prog-rock songs with Genesis, ballads, love songs, hard rock, he's done it all.
I grew up when Phil was huge. His voice was just magical and his talent to write unmatched. I’m glad I got to experience these songs when they came out. Great artist.
It speaks volumes that you don't even notice that it's almost 10 minutes into the song before there's much percussion to speak of except for the hand-drumming in the background--until his drum kit appears and you hear that iconic drum fill. It set the standard for the rock drum sound for everyone else to follow.
I love watching these reactions by these young people, and how much they appreciate the music I grew up with. And that drum solo ALWAYS and I mean always demands a mandatory air-drum solo. No matter what you are doing when that solo comes on you must stop what you are doing and play the air drums.
hey Stacey ....you have to watch the' Cadburys Chocolate commercial (extended mix, 4 min version) best ever TV ad..Gorilla playing the drum solo from In The Air Tonight, when it was released people didnt know what was going on|| Love your analysis vids..keep up the good work..love ya.
Phil is great. The band Genesis hired him for his drumming. After Peter Gabriel left the band Phil became the front man lead singer. Surprisingly they both have very similar voices.
How he times the walk to the drums perfectly. That's talent. I'm amazed that you've never heard of Phil Collins. He doesn't drum anymore because of his back. He had back surgery but it went wrong and left him needing a cane and a wheelchair. His 16yr old son stood in and played the drum part for him on stage a few times.
stacey back in the day, in our 1985 cars and through the 90's, cassettes firts and the cd's, that bit you said you liked, was the part we turned up the volume, for for the speakers we retro fitted, that were to big for the car, but belted out the sounds
Phil was the drummer for the band Genesis and then took over the lead singer role while still drumming for that band. He then embarked on a huge solo career for years. Then he reunited with Gennisis for awhile. Brilliant career and longevity. But old age has caught up to him and his back is so bad he's basically confined to a wheelchair. I guess as Pink Floyd says TIME catches up with all of us sooner or later. Loved the reaction.❤
This song is my favorite Phil Collins and top 10. Never gets old. It was the theme of the TV show Miami Vice. Sad, that he can no longer play. But yes, he is awesome. One of the best drummers in Rock History.
My father was a Vice Detective in Miami in the 60s and 70s. He retired in 1981. He was literally, "Miami Vice". He enjoyed the TV show, but as most cops do, had lots and lots of problems with the procedures (or lack thereof) shown on TV. When asked about being an actual Miami Vice cop he had 2 regular responses, either "I was Miami Vice without a Ferrari or a linen suit" or he gave them his business card which read "Bill Kennedy I was Miami Vice before Miami Vice was "Miami Vice"
In High School one of my favorite bands was Genesis. Phil Collins was the legendary drummer of Genesis; vocals were done by Peter Gabriel in those days. When Peter left the band, Phil took over, and his vocals were amazing; the band lasted decades after that. Phil's solo career was stellar as well, with this as his breakout solo song.
One of the most recognisable drum solos in the world, his voice is something else, can't believe people haven't encountered his music, ever, this performance is amazing, I'm just gutted that I'll never have the opportunity to see him live.
Phil Collins is considered one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. He made his name first as the drummer for the band Genesis (check out "Mama" or "Turn It On Again" for a sample of Phil's vocal/percussion abilities with the band), which was fronted originally by Peter Gabriel (try "Firth of Fifth" or the longer "Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty" for Gabriel-era Genesis with Phil mainly on drums). His drum sound on Peter Gabriel's third solo album became the standard sound for most drums for most genres of music in the 1980s.
Went to see Robert Plant in concert when he went on tour promoting his first solo album after John's Death. It was not advertised but Phil walked out on stage the crowd roared. He played drums for the entire concert.
Phil was one of the most kick-ass prog and rock drummers, and in my top 5 for influences. Watch him playing live while not singing, something like Los Endos, In the Cage (with medley), Abacab (starts with vocals, then Phil sits down for some stunt drumming) or any of the drum duets he did with Chester Thompson. Phil was an incredible showman, too. I was blessed to see him twice on the Mama tour, while he was at his peak in the 80s. God bless Phil, always.
Happy to see the young generation appreciating musicianship before all the technology in music. This is a great live recording. The drums didn’t come out of the floor he walked up the risers where they were.
Don't forget Phil's other band Brand X, which he had in parallel to Genesis & his solo career. In The Air Tonight was his first solo album Face Value and was the first solo hit single and immediate hit. These early songs being his expression through his marriage breakup. He says were really just for him as an escape route while he had down time and not intended for any public release. There's a similarity in Phil & Peter Gabriel's voices, especially in their time together in Genesis. Phil said he always had sung from behind his drum kit, but when Peter left Genesis in 1976, he had to think about recruiting a stage drummer so he could sing out front. Interestingly the long term tour drummer Chester Thompson was the other drummer in this performance, as well as Daryl Stuermer, the guitarist. Phil's a left handed drummer, the kit is set up reversed. Being felt handed allows Phil & Chester (standard right handed) to easily see each other while they play their drum duets in Genesis live performances 😀
Nice, shout out to brand X. I was a good mate of Goods, and roadied for his band Firemerchants who Chester drummed for at one when he wasn't touring with Phil. John Goodsall passed a couple of years back when he went to the pub during the pandemic and was brought down by covid. We miss him dearly. He was followed a year later by his best mate Ric Parnell who played Mic Shrimpton in spinal tap, they were both in Atomic Rooster and a session Band called Zoo drive. Fun fact, John and Ric as Zoo drive were the backing band for Toni Basil's Mickey along with Paul Delph who also passed away, and Doug Lunn on Bass who passed away from cancer a few years ago, he was also the bass player for Firemerchants. Ric was a top bloke and so was Doug. I never knew Paul but they all spoke very highly of him.
Born in the 70's and growing up in the 80's and 90's we by far had the best musicians/music of all time during those 3 decades. Nothing matches or even comes close to those 3 decades of music. There was no auto tuning just pure and raw talent!!
Phil Collins was HUGE in the 80's. He had many great songs: Against All Odds, Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away, and many many others. Look into his solo albums and you will be pleasantly surprised!
Stacey As you continue thru Phil Collins and Genesis' rabbit hole, man wearing glasses and long white beard is session musician and friend of Collins, Leland Sklar, bassist. Leland has his own TH-cam channel. On his channel, Leland talks about his experiences and stories working as a session or touring musician for example, Phil Collins or even Genesis. Leland has played a lot with other iconic artists such as Linda Ronstadt & The Doors. Reason for this suggestion is that I love Leland's stories being there with them.
Phil Collins, normally a drummer himself had to step in as Genesis' singer after other founding member and singer, Peter Gabriel left the band for his solo career.
Phil's son, Nic Collins is also a drummer too. During Gensis' final tour, Nic stepped in for his father because Phil is dealing with some health issues.
Simply one of the luckiest people on the planet you are to hear this for the first time! I still get covered in goosebumps every time I hear the intro!
Since you are new at this. Phil was a lead singer for Genesis. Dig into that. "Mama, "Home By The Sea" or just about anything off of their Three Sides Live album is a good place to start...but the hole is super deep.
Hes been a child actor, his mother ran a famous stage school in the UK, hes a scren actor appeared in many movies , appeared in Miami Vice also in the late 80's Hes also from the prog rock band Genesis
I seen Phil live play that very song! In the stadium I felt numb! I was only 14. I had a great big brother who is considerably older than me took me along!! I'll never forget that!
This magnificent song was Phil's debut solo-single (outside Genesis). Released in January 1981. The song is especially famous for its drum breaks towards the end, which has been described as "the sleekest, most melodramatic drum breaks in history". At this show he has a whole bunch of extremely talanted performers on stage. Just realize that no one less than Leland Sklar plays bass - he is a true legend on his own!!
Phil was a hugely talented musician with Genesis then he did his own music. Just like Stevie Nicks doing her own music away from Fleetwood Mac. Both are monster musicians that are great references for any young musician learning how to make and play music. 😊
I remember that I was a kid when this song came over the radio and I was in bed. This song was almost like a fantasy. Phil Collins has an amazing voice.
I know, don't ;you wish you were at this concert? I sure do...I never had the chance to see him in concert. Darn! What a performance. I bet he had 40,000 in that stadium...New to your channel, it's great. Love your reactions!
I remember when this came out in 1981 and was on heavy rotation both on radio and MTV (when it still played music videos). The drum drop has become iconic. In 1985, for Live Aid, Phil played his set at Wembly Stadium, hopped on a Concorde, landed in New York and took a helicopter to Philadelphia where he played his set there. A friend of mine was there and he said the entire crowd sang the drum drop when Phil played it.
I couldn't help but notice your reaction when Bassist Leland Sklar ( The Guy with the very impressive beard ) was shown for a moment .
All these musicians collectively and individually have been favorites of mine throughout the decades.
(PatrickW_Luxembourg) This concert in Paris was in two parts, this song was played in the beginning of the second part.
Genesis is the core
My favorite Genesis song is Home By The Sea.
This wasn’t a Genesis song
This is as iconic and as famous as Stairway To Heaven. No clue on how anyone hasn't at least heard it in passing. Having said that, great reaction to such a fantastic song.
1 person on a stage alone captivating about 70k people. All of them memorized by him alone. That is talent!
@@ExitStrategy1609 I will fix it
I am currently 61 years old.
No matter how many times I hear Phil Collins sing this song, my mind takes me back to age 21 in 1984 (The golden year of the best decade ever) and swooning from watching the pilot episode of Miami Vice.
Yep the 80's were so true in their own development
You nailed it my friend!
Even gorillas know the song! 😀
This song is about him confronting his ex wife about her cheating on him, its crazy how you can see this song means so much to him emotionally
It's about suicide
You're thinking of "I don't care anymore".
This song is about bullies at a camp when he was young throwing a kid in the lake and not saving him.
Great song choice by Phil Collins! Thank you for reacting to this one Stacey!
"I dont care anymore "is another good phil collins hit
Agree 100%. Must see Stacey react to it.😊
By far my fav song by Phil!
That is one of my favorites, and such an underrated song of his.
One of the coolest drum parts that plays perfectly on his concert toms. That Gretsch kit had a signature "bark," really prominent on that track. You always knew when Phil was on a song in the 80s.
One of my favourites for sure. ”Man on the corner” is another one.
That man has one of, If not the most recognizable and beautiful voices out there. A true legend!!!!
Phil Collins, simply a national treasure !! I've had the absolute pleasure of watching Phil live !!
He’s one of the greatest and most talented musicians in the world today and it’s doubtful there’ll be another one like him in my lifetime.
kinda a one hit wonder for me
Phil Collins was also in Live Aid with Queen. Live Aid was an international show with stage performances around the world. Phil Collins first performed at Wembley Stadium in London. He then went by the Concorde to perform in Philadelphia.
Thats a hell of a performance and tbh one of the best performances of all time
I'm a simple man:
---I see a beautiful girl reacting to my favorite musician, I click.
Great reaction...and beautiful eyes! lol
...er, thats not creepy at all.
This video is probably the second best way to enjoy this tune. The first being the Miami Vice video with this song in it.
Glad people are still discovering him. His build you up and takes on journey. Great story telling .
Crescendo decrescendo .
He is one singer who can't be mimicked in his performances, he is truly an Icon.
The timing of "He hasn't played the drums yet" 30 seconds before the most iconic drum fill of all time hahaha
If you want more like this, check out Mama by Genesis (Phil was the vocalist of Genesis before he went solo), it's a similar vibe to this song. Quite dark and drum-heavy.
His discography is so wide ranging from Disney soundtracks, 25 minute prog-rock songs with Genesis, ballads, love songs, hard rock, he's done it all.
A bit too perfect wasn't it? Almost as she knew what's going to happen ; )
I think what percussion were are hearing before the drums come in are being done via a keyboard synth.
Yup, a drum machine.
Also Don Johnson driving scene in Miami Vice after his partner died. That epic montage to this music. Perfection.
It's strange how most of the worlds greatest most iconic music artist all come out of Britain. The Brits sure are a musical bunch.
I always say, Americans invented rock'n'roll, Brits perfected it
I love watching these reactions by these young people, and how much they appreciate the music I grew up with. And that drum solo ALWAYS and I mean always demands a mandatory air-drum solo. No matter what you are doing when that solo comes on you must stop what you are doing and play the air drums.
Phil Collins, was my first concert. Way back, in 1985!
Mine was in 1977 with Genesis
@@patrickwouters6568 I'm sure, that was a great show!
hey Stacey ....you have to watch the' Cadburys Chocolate commercial (extended mix, 4 min version) best ever TV ad..Gorilla playing the drum solo from In The Air Tonight, when it was released people didnt know what was going on|| Love your analysis vids..keep up the good work..love ya.
When I listen to this song my neighbors get to listen to it with me,LOL
I know that you will be even MORE blown away by the cover of "Sounds of Silence" by the lead singer of Disturbed!!!!! Seriously!!!
Phil Collins (Genesis) - „Mama“ is must must! Next. Studio version! His best vocal performance ever…
I agree! I don't many if any songs that are so pact with emotion and thick atmosphere as 'Mama'...
One of the most iconic drum fills of all time! Phil is incredible
Phil is great. The band Genesis hired him for his drumming. After Peter Gabriel left the band Phil became the front man lead singer. Surprisingly they both have very similar voices.
I will never ever tire of listening and watching this performance live. It’s one of the most awesome iconic songs ever!
Phil introduced this masterpiece to the world on, Miami Vice, Season 1 # 1
It was epic video making with the song.
The first two seasons were awesome for their soundtracks!!
@@dougdornseif Jan Hammer - Escape from Television album has many of Jan's greats from that show
My father was a Vice Detective in Miami in the 60s and 70s.
I remember hearing Phil Collins in the 90s singing in Disney’s Tarzan film he has such a memorable and iconic voice.
Phil Collins is simply an extraordinary musician and one of the best things to come out of the 80's
Now you kids know how awesome our music was back in the 70’s!
This song was released in 1981.
80s...80s...the best decade of Pop. Rock it would been somewhere between 70s and 80s.
@@MinorCirrus must have been early 81. I remember listening to it before I joined the Navy in May 81
@@MikeGradyPDX It was released in January indeed :)
He's one of the best drummers ever. He started as a drummer and backup singer to Genesis and their lead singer Peter Gabriel.
The best part is the crowd, who have been mesmerized suddenly cheering as he took the last few steps to the drums.
That drum drop is one of the most iconic in music history. Legendary.
Not only that, but Phil can actually sing a little, too!
I just cannot imagine this being the first time you've heard this song. It's iconic!
You must be living under a rock if you haven't heard this song before ?
The best entrance in a show. IS AMAZING
Phil, was the drummer for "Genesis" when Peter Gabriel was their lead singer, before he left to pursue a brilliant solo career.
And also provided the backing vocals that blended so well with Peter's voice.
For GenX it’s a record which is part of your life. Magic.
"But he hasn't drummed yet" just as he's walking straight toward the drum set is so perfectly timed.
Stacey
As you continue thru Phil Collins and Genesis' rabbit hole, man wearing glasses and long white beard is session musician and friend of Collins, Leland Sklar, bassist.
I remember well as a kid going on summer holidays in the early 90s with a friend and we both religiously listening to Collins / Genesis. Great times.
Just strolling around the stage but when he gets to the drums! Amazing! It gets me every time.
Everybody plays the drums on this track. Only Phil owns it! Song and play are awesome. Seen him live. GOAT when live. Love the reaction. Stay Safe.✌
Hes been a child actor, his mother ran a famous stage school in the UK, hes a scren actor appeared in many movies , appeared in Miami Vice also in the late 80's
Hes also from the prog rock band Genesis
I seen Phil live play that very song! In the stadium I felt numb! I was only 14. I had a great big brother who is considerably older than me took me along!! I'll never forget that!
Great! He is the voice of GENESIS! They should be your next band to react to. Thanks Stacey.
He's actually a phenomenal drummer.
I know, don't ;you wish you were at this concert? I sure do...I never had the chance to see him in concert. Darn! What a performance. I bet he had 40,000 in that stadium...New to your channel, it's great. Love your reactions!
Hi Stacey thanks for reacting to Phil Collins suggest you go back to his band Genesis and start with Firth of Fifth you wont be disappointed
I saw Phil and his original Group:Genesis' first ever Top Of The Bill performance in South East London, with 3,000 others in 1972 so 52 years ago:)
Leland is an "A" list studio bassist that has appeared with too many artists to name over all types of musical genre's that he's recorded & also toured with . You should check out Leyland's TH-cam channel . There are hundreds of episodes and you can find plenty of great stories of people he's encountered in his 50+ years in the business . 🙂 Here's an episode where Leland discusses "In the Air Tonight" ~ th-cam.com/video/L8-N5T0Ml5s/w-d-xo.html
Hello fellow Leland (Lee) Sklar subscriber! Coolest name in the biz! Also dig Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, etc.).
