The drummer in this performance is Terry Williams and you're right he's an absolutely fantastic drummer. He always nailed his live performances but during this gig his dad was in the audience and it was the first time he'd seen his son perform hence why he goes all out lol

I heard that's also part of the reason for the tempo, that he was worked-up cuz his Dad was there, so he came out a little fast, and Mark & the boys just rolled with it and delivered this awesome performance.

I didn't know that! Holy cow, no wonder there's so much energy in it! Still my favorite version of the tune. There's always something with musicians and their dads, isn't there? I recall an old interview with Eddie Money where he said his dad never thought much of what Ed did for a living - until he went to a show and saw his boy sweating on stage. To dad, sweat=real job.

This was 1979 right? I'm sure that was the year I saw them play this live. Yup, tempo much faster than usual for this song, but this was the greatest rendition of it.

@@TorrentUK A little bit later. Alchemy Live was recorded at The Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1983. That place must have great acoustics because every live band performance I've watched from that venue sounds fantastic. Iron Maidens live show Beast Over Hammersmith was recorded there in 1982 and the production and sound is amazing. Obviously these kinds of bands have great audio techs as well but there have been many epic gigs recorded there.

Best thing said about the Dire Straits...

      YES. I LOVE this line.
‘And the next night they did it all over again, only this time with Sony Walkmen.’
When I started taking girls home with me, as a teenager, ‘Communique’ was the album I always put on the record player; I eventually made a Dire Straits compilation tape that contained all the best songs from ‘Communique’, plus ‘Down To the Waterline’ (my favourite ‘make-out song’ of all time), ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Skateaway’, ‘Telegraph Road’, ‘Private Investigations’, ‘On Every Street’, and a few more great Dire Straits melodies. The idea was to plays some ‘mood music’ that still rocked, but also I knew that if she asked me to change the music, we didn’t have an hope in hell.

I'm from Zagreb, Croatia. When Dire Straits performed here in 1990ies my friend, who at that time made handmade electric guitars gave him a red guitar, one of the favorite guitars on which Mark played at concerts. Believe it or not. They started their worldwide tour for Brothers in Arms in Zagreb. And also there is one interesting video of Brothers in Arms on TH-cam filmed during a real war (Croatian liberation), in the early autumn of 1991, in Croatia. You should watch that at th-cam.com/video/ghBkZCN16o8/w-d-xo.html. Think it is the best contribution to this Dire Straits song ever.

What I love most about this performance is the total lack of ego. It's just a bunch of guys on the stage, completely in the zone and having the time of their lives. They know they're killing it; that they're all performing absolutely at their peak; but instead of strutting, yelling, or barrelling around they just have these grins plastered across their faces and a vibe with the music. Mark pulls out an outrageous solo and then backs off to let the other players have their moment at the front. Terry has his dad watching, is utterly juiced and is playing like a man possessed and the others are right along with him despite it being and unsual tempo for the song. And all the time they are waxing and waning the tempo, teasing the audience with adrenaline highs and lows right up to the sublime finish. There have been bigger concerts, more charismatic performances, and more iconic songs; but when it comes to the pure joy of what music can bring to the world I don't think anything has ever come close to this set...

Dire Straits may be one of the most important bands during the transformation period between the 1970s and the 1980s. They were certainly instrumental in paging the sound of the new era. These guys came up playing in pubs and other small venues, until they started to catch on and play bigger spaces. This show is in a theater that holds 3,500 people. Two years later, they were playing the big stadium shows in front of 80,000. Working at that level kind of burned them out, though, which is why Dire Straits isn't still going.
However, Mark Knopfler, the singer, lead guitarist, and songwriter, is still creating new music. He's 74, almost 75, and his latest album came out in April 2024. It made it to #3 on the British album charts, right behind Beyonce. He also owns a professional recording studio in London.
If you like his work, there are 6 Dire Straits studio albums and a lot of live material. He's also done 10 solo albums, 9 film scores, and a ton of collaborations with other artists. So there's lots to explore.

I was a teenager working in radio when the record came out ("Sultans of Swing" was their first 'hit' in the US). Was driving home after my shift when the guy on-air after me played it. At first, I thought it was Bob Dylan with a head cold. And then the guitar started playing. I turned around and drove back to the station.."WTF * was * that?!?" For fun try "Industrial Disease", for a solid groove and more guitar, try "Expresso (yes, he spelled it like that) Love". Congrats on discovering one of the best rock bands that ever existed -or ever will. People will still be listening to Dire Straits 200yrs from now.

Songs you should listen to are 'Tunnel of Love', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Money for Nohing', 'Brothers in Arms', 'Calling Elvis', 'Private Investigations' and many more.

Mark is a genius in his technique... your next review should be 'money for nothing' where he lays down one of the most iconic guitar riffs ever...

"Telegraph Road" is a more folksy tale of how the countryside may sprout small towns that flourish and then fail with the rise and fall of industry -- it's an incredible composition and performace in the Alchemy Live set, and many fans consider it their best track. "Romeo and Juliet" is a flowing romantic ballad. "Money for Nothing" is an ironic pop-style take on being a rock'n'roller in the glam video era. "Brothers in Arms" is a heartfelt look at personal history and trauma.

Stumbled upon your channel, but so much enjoyed watch a new generation discover Dire Straits. Fun Fact: Not only is Mark a finger-plucking guitar virtuoso, but despite the fact that he is left handed, he is doing all of this with his right hand! Also, in addition to being a fabulous lead singer and musician, he was doing the song-writing and composition as well. You have to check out "Telegraph Road" and "Once Upon a Time in the West", two breathtaking live performances form the same Alchemy Live concert. Then, the cheeky "Money for Nothing" is considered by some to have one of the best all-time guitar riffs (there's an official music video but the live performance from 'On the Night" is excellent. And then, there's "Brother's in Arms", a moving , poignant but spine-tingling track; Mark's guitar actually 'weeps'.

hey Stacey, i love your reactions and this one just reminded me why. there are and have been many awesome artists but there are only maybe 10 or 12 artists in history that speak to me through their art. they connect directly to my soul. loved your reaction to one of them! thank you so much for continuing to share your journey. as long as you keep sharing i'll be happy to join you! much love to you and yours🙂🙂🙂❤❤❤

This is one of the best reaction videos I've ever seen. You really enhanced and refreshed my enjoyment of this song. Dire Straits are a band who are very dear to me. I was introduced to them by my dad and grew up with them. Terry Williams is my drumming hero and I loved your appreciation of his talent.

Great choice, and welcome to a great band. Another must-see performance is 'Telegraph Road', also from the Alchemy tour - spine-tingling, amazing stuff. Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists out there, with a truly unique tone and a fantastic songwriter to boot. It's a great rabbit hole to go down, and as always, it's a lot of fun to enjoy this journey with you. Peace and love from Canada ☮

This is just wonderful. I remember the summer of 1978 when I was on the beautiful Island of Naxos (Greece) Everywhere you could hear Sultans of swing..from every pub..disco..restaurant .The sun was shining..The beer was cold and the women so beautiful. I was 19 and life was easy. Mark Knopfler is one of my greatest guitar heroes. Thank you Stacey for a great reaction.❤

Thank you Stacey once again for your reaction . It’s people like you and other reactors keeping the music that a guy like myself ( pushing on the years 😂 ) alive . As for you saying “ you don’t have musical knowledge “ , music is about moments in life , that song played on a first date , the song from a broken heart or the best time with a friend, music is there to make you feel and Dire Straits and other groups with make those moments. Keep up the good work

Wonderful band from the UK, they got big relatively late in life compared to others but they were already seasoned musicians. Mark Knopfler is from my neck of the woods in the North East of England and is always counted amongst Eric Clapton and David Gilmour as one of the greatest Guitar Players ever

    I was there!
I was just 18 and it took a while for it to get going, I thought, but really kicked off when they played "Sultans"!
I was on the balcony just behind the people you could see clapping, it was incredible, but you don't appreciate it so much at the time.
I liked it that they just turned up and played, with no fancy lights (Ironically, I went to see Genesis later that year that was the opposite in that respect, that was brilliant too)
We are so lucky it was recorded so well, so we can enjoy it now.
You're right Stacey, Terry Williams on the drums was the star, he was for me anyway, even on that stage of talent!
I don't know if the story about his dad is true, I don't think he's ever confirmed it, he always played like that, 100MPH, never missed a riff or a fill, the best live drumming I've seen.
Now, Stacey, listen. The next Dire Straights song you react to is "Telegraph Road", from the same Alchemy gig.
That will properly blow your mind

I loved this band in my teens. Was very fortunate to see them live in concert during their Brothers In Arms concert tour in Melbourne, Australia during the 80's when I was about 13-14 years old. Also played "keys" in a band at the time with some very talented school friends and this was one of the songs we covered. They have so many great hits. One of my faves is Brothers In Arms. Very moody but beautiful song.

Mark Knopfler first inspired me to start teaching myself how to finger pick the guitar at the end of the 1970s & it's provided me with a continual source of truly enjoyable entertainment ever since, because it doesn't matter how good you get at it you never stop learning new aspects to it.
