  • We've officially had the 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Ecodiesel for one year and just over 20K miles! We've crossed the country with it, overlanded, off roaded, snow wheeled, daily drove, camped out of this rig. It has performed flawlessly. Check out the video for a thorough walk around of the mods and review.

    Great review, it appears we have identical Jeeps except for the dash color. So far I love the truck as well. I live in the Appalachian Mountains in SWVA and other trucks I’ve had were terrible on fuel and struggled pulling a boat up the mountains. This is a different animal and it’s nice!

    Just subbed due to your presentation style. Straightforward & no nonsense. Liked your 2" lift and preserving the original wheels on new larger tire approach. Looked great and saved some funds for other improvements.
    Considering this Jeep for our RV toad. Not the first to do so as we see them all over the country behind RVs. Our coach is a diesel pusher so filling with diesel fuel and managing DEF are NP...especially since Jeep placed the fill for each on the drivers side which is truck stop friendly. We fuel up using a publicly available fleet discount card so we do not pay pump prices (typically 40 cents less up to 1.00 less @ T/A and other participating Truck Stops). So we would have a one fuel set-up with DP & Jeep. (DP is all electric with Cummins diesel engine, Aqua-hot diesel furnace & water heater, plus 10K diesel generator (Cummins Onan w/ Kubota 3 cylinder)).
    Would be interesting and I am sure someone has done the math on the real cost differences between fueling this platform with diesel/DEF vs Gasoline. Overlooking the 4K upcharge for the engine itself lol but there is no disputing that more torque is better! Our DP delivers 1,250 ft lbs of it...such that our 37' Class A breadbox shaped bus with a GVWR of 37,600 lbs., averages 11.5 MPGs! (Cummins L9 mated to the Allison 3000MH). A gas powered equivalent would see about 7mpg, not pull the hills as well and certainly not enjoy downhill engine braking.
    Aftermarket Jeep support as you say is phenomenal. We plan to haul 2 kayaks, 2 bicycles, auxiliary fresh water and gray water bladders for boondocking extended stays, etc etc. For future use, really intrigued by the slide in campers for these. Kind of a mini-GXV or Earthroamer pkg. without the million dollar entry fee.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the sub! Sounds like you have a pretty solid setup! We have thrown around the idea of getting a motor home but it will be one of those things that would be years down the road. I would definitely want to do a diesel pusher as well as they just tow way better. I have seen many people use the JT as their toad vehicle and it really is a good platform. We just drove it from Michigan to South Carolina. We’re down here for the week to do some off-roading and enjoy the warmer weather. Jeep drove great and we averaged 25 MPG on the drive down. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have any other questions.

    Great review! I came here after watching your Holy Cross video to see what your setup is. I'm even more impressed you did Holy Cross with a 2" lift on a long wheelbase. I went with a JTR gasser and love it, although the diesel is still tempting although not sure I want to deal with the greater complexity. The 8spd+Pentastar is a much better combo than the JKU's 5spd, but yeah could still use some more torque.

    Have a 2021 JTRD with MOPAR 3.5" lift and 35" tires. 15k miles. I get 22mpg around town, but not much more on the highway. Probably because I drive >70. I tow utility trailer and my 19' boat with no problems. No repairs yet, except I got the recall notice for the fuel pump and will be bringing in for that when they have parts. I wish I had time to do more off roading and use that aspect of the truck. DEF use is probably same as what you're saying you get. I have been using the boxed stuff, but will try using some at the nearby Bucee's stop which I know has some. Really enjoyed your video. Thanks.

    A local dealer has a Willys gladiator with the winter pack, aux switches headliner but the smaller screen for 48K new and your video was ver helpful. I'm in a long bed Colorado diesel 4x4 which is longer with a longer wheelbase so that part would be better in the jeep. I'll miss the 37 mpg highway but lifting the jeep is far simpler than the Colorado.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Happy to hear my review was helpful! I don’t know a whole lot about the Colorado platform but jeeps are super easy to lift and put big tires on. After my lift and 37 inch tires I average around 24 miles to the gallon which is not bad for a jeep.

    Since you have the cold weather group and a Tazer... You can actually set it up that the auto-turn on piece will turn on the passenger seat heat as well. (Really useful if your wife likes a warm seat too.)

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One thing about the tazer... If you haven't already.. turn OFF the lightshows in the software... you can actually trigger then via the key fob if done wrong...
      And..
      If you press the unlock button 3 times (I think) it actually has a functionality to turn on your rear lights/bed lights as well. Cooldown mode is nice when towing up grades though... especially when hauling heavy stuff.

    I've been agonizing over whether a Gladiator is right for me. I want something that could occasionally tow a 3-4k lb camper, be fun to drive as a daily, not take up too much room in my driveway, and ideally fit in the garage. I also have a place in the mountains near tons of gravel roads, which would be fun to explore. It seems there are many Jeep haters that will recommend you make a different choice, or to get a full size if you want to tow. For my wants the Gladiator or the new 2024 Tacoma seem to be the best fit. I test drove a full size RAM and Sierra and couldn't imagine driving those as my daily, let alone on narrow gravel roads.

    Did you weigh before and after? The load rating is pretty derated in my opinion. The only significant weight I’ve added to my ‘22 diesel gladiator is the warm winch plate and the 12k badlands winch. I regularly haul 120 gallons of water(120 x 8.5lbs + my 175lbs) and I’m well over the sticker capacity……it doesn’t care and looking from the side, you wouldn’t really notice any meaningful squat with the water tank in the back

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t weighed my truck as it sits but I would like to at some point. My heaviest add ons are definitely the metal cloak skid plates. Followed probably by the JCR rock sliders, winch/plate, 37” Falken Wildpeaks, RCI half rack, the roof top tent is pushing 150-200# as well but I don’t keep that on all the time. I’ve added quite a bit of weight but the diesel simply does not care. That’s why I got it.

    • @brsnow225
      @brsnow225 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't weigh mine either, but I've only got the winch bits and I've got a decent idea of what those bits cost. I think the Rubicon is really down rated on the sticker for capacity. Anyone have the sticker capacity for the 3.6?

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know they rate the Rubicon less because it technically is heavier from the factory with the extra skids/etc. the diesel pushes it down the road without issue. The 3.6, which I have in my JKU, is a dog 😆

    • @brsnow225
      @brsnow225 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! Just like the diesel isn’t rated to tow as much as the 3.6 max tow package. I’d much rather tow with a diesel engine. Way more torque and pulling power.

    The diesel has a lower rating because of cooling. Otherwise it would probably have a better rating.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cooling and the Rubicon equipped with the diesel is heavier than a sport with the 3.6. The extra weight contributes to the lower towing capacity.

    • @trailtothevoid
      @trailtothevoid ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrailExpedition While heavier, yes... but the sport with the 3.6 (With max towing group) has additional cooling and "aerodynamics" for it.. plus 4.10 gears and stuff.. The Rubicon actually has less towing capacity (6000) than the lower tiers (6500) in towing for the diesel because of things like the Swaybar disconnect/lockers. (Should be like... Page 210-212 in your owners manual... At least according to the online version) However the Rubicon Diesel matches the 3.6L (non-max tow sport) at the 6k mark.
      It's been discussed a few times in forums that it's basically a limitation on cooling, because Jeep can't get enough cooling in when pumping the power through... (Someone in some after-market area will make something to help with this....but to my knowledge it doesn't exist....yet.)

      @@TrailExpedition I had a Tacoma before my Gladiator(s) and I hated the low seating position. Gladiator seating is much more comfortable from a height/leg angle perspective. The other biggest drawback for me on the Taco was the acceleration of the atkinson-cycle V6. It was terrible trying to get up to speed on the highway, even when trying to use that silly "sport" button for a little extra power. Both my gas V6 Gladiator (my first one) and now my diesel Gladiator (2nd one) have much better acceleration. I don't need speed from a truck, but acceleration is important to me.

      @Trail Expedition I have not, I always wanted a diesel jeep, but with the Def garbage and torque limiter etc it wasn't worth it to even tune or delete it.
