SAXON Mountain - PRONE to ROCK Slides!

After ascending the Spring Creek trail, you have one of two options. Cascade Creek or Saxon Mountain. Since I was camped near Georgetown, I elected to take Saxon Mountain. What happened to Marblehead on Drummond Island is a crying shame. Unfortunately, this is not the only place on the island that has been cleared of ledges. I read there was going to a project to smooth some of the trails on Drummond, but I thought that meant filling in some of the deep ruts and undoing some of the erosion. I never expected they meant smoothing was to destroy the obstacles and natural landscape of the trails, especially Marble Head. I think it was a deliberate decision to permanently destroy Marble Head, they could have filled it with dirt to get the equipment and boulders down to the ledge, not destroy the rock. I have a planned trip this fall, but not sure I'll be going back after.

      Drummond has recently gone through a “smoothing of trails” so a lot of them have gotten a lot easier. With that said, your rig can do everything on the island. However, I would probably stay out of the tight twisties and the tank trap area. If you do decide to tackle them, stick with the bypass lines.

    I spoke with the Leave No Trace Group at winter-fest at Holly Oaks this past winter. They said they were under contract with the DNR to restore the trails back to they way they were. The boulders blocking the overlook were mentioned as they should have never been removed. The part of smoothing the steps caught me off guard.

      @TrailExpedition 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m all for the boulders at the lookout. That’s fine. It’s the overall smoothing of the trails that has people pissed. It’s not just Marblehead. Several of the trails have had hard areas removed. It’s literally the best place to wheel in Michigan and it’s actively being taken away..

    My best advice on a trail like Spring Creek is to travel with a buddy. On this trail years ago my son suffered a flat tire (which we had to change trail side) and another truck with us suffered a bent rear driveshaft that reared its ugly head on the road back. Another truck had a couple problems but my Bronco made it unscathed that time.

      Geez, sounds like you guys hit it hard! I go out alone a lot and eventually I’m sure it will come back to bite me in the ass. Typically, if I’m solo, I will bypass obstacles that look like they will get me in trouble. Which is the main reason why I bypassed the rock wall in the beginning of the trail.

    What I love about a lot of your videos is that you do solo difficult trails. It inspires me to do the same. I prefer doing solo when I wanna go with my gladiator Rubicon I'll need practice first since I’ve never offroaded before lol.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I like being solo because it makes for a better video. If I’m wheeling with other people I cannot get out and set up shots as much. It’s kinda nice going slow and taking your time with it. Plus, it really shows how much you and your rig are capable of.

      @@TrailExpedition Any ideas on using a drone while your driving? Do they do autopilot and just film while your run a trail for the short time I can with the battery draining?

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Good-luck-Jonathan I use a Skydio 2 drone for most of my aerial shots. It’s an excellent drone that has obstacle avoidance and flies itself. Unfortunately they stopped making them but I’m sure there are other ones out there that will work.

    Great video! Thanks and be safe (stay frosty) always. I'm going to guess about the cave in that, it might be an old silver mine. I did a quick search to see if I'm correct, but unless I spend quite a bit of time on the research it is still a guess. Anyone out there more familiar? It appears to have the old 'suspension' often seen in the coal mines here in PA. The floor and the bar supports (not that it will help you if the roof caves in) also look similar to rudimentary mine shafts here. Anyway, thanks very much. It seems like this channel should have more followers. You're tops and there are many off road channels. Best.

    • @TrailExpedition

      The cave definitely looked like a mining tunnel, however, every one I’ve come across is blocked off. This is the first one I’ve encountered that was actually accessible. And thank you for the kind words. I put a lot of time and effort into making and editing these videos. Good to know they’re appreciated. When you were stuck (7:30 mark) I think you were hung up on your control arm hanger. Also, the old saying of "discretion is the better part of valor" always applies when wheeling. Don't apologize for taking a by pass. I was out yesterday, and came to an obstacle only two of us went around on in a group of 16. I was tired, not mentally ready to (what for me was) push my comfort zone out. I had already done that on other challenges, and my Glad was perfectly capable of doing it, but I wasn't feeling it.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not exactly sure what I was hungry for up on. My rear lower control arms have been modified to sit flush with the axle as I was getting hung up on them a lot in the past. The obstacle I bypassed definitely looked sketchier actually looking at it opposed to how it appears in video. It’s all about knowing your limits and what you and your vehicle are capable of. My Jeep could have done it but being solo I didn’t want to risk it. Thanks for the comment!

    Are you by yourself? Brave soul, but that's no 8 rated trail. No offense, but you haven't seen a real 8 rated trail if you think that was one. Good video! Well done. I can't believe you're out there alone. Brass balls man.

    • @TrailExpedition
      @TrailExpedition 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think they give it as an 8 on onX off-road for that one obstacle I did bypass. If it wasn’t for that one obstacle it would probably be closer to a six or seven. The hardest trail I’ve ever run was holy Cross.

    • @sevendewey
      @sevendewey 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It gets the rating from the wall obstacle. I skipped the wall section entirely and made it with no winching in a 4Runner on 33’s. That section where you got hung up on that left hand turn before the rock garden took me several attempts before getting through. Having a front locker there would have helped.

    • @TrailExpedition
