    No Man's Sky is an action-adventure survival video game developed and published by the indie studio Hello Games for PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows. The game was released worldwide in August 2016.
    No Man's Sky's gameplay is built on four pillars - exploration, survival, combat, and trading. Players are free to perform within the entirety of a procedurally generated deterministic open universe, which includes over 18 quintillion (1.8×1019) planets, many with their own sets of flora and fauna. By exploring, players gain information about the planets that they can submit to the Atlas, a universal database that can be shared with other players of the game. Players get compensated in in-game currency every time new information is uploaded to The Atlas. Players also gain materials and blueprints to upgrade their character's equipment and purchase a variety of starships, allowing them to travel deeper into the center of the galaxy, survive on planets with hostile environments, interact in friendly or hostile manners with computer-controlled space-faring factions, or trade with other ships. Some activities, such as killing too many lifeforms or draining too many resources from planets, will draw the attention of patrolling robotic Sentinels that will attempt to kill the player character.
    Players participate in a shared universe, with the ability to exchange planet coordinates with friends, though the game is also fully playable offline; this is enabled by the procedural generation system that assures players find the same planet with the same features, lifeforms, and other aspects once given the planet coordinates, requiring no further data to be stored or retrieved from game servers. Nearly all elements of the game are procedurally generated, including star systems, planets and their ecosystems, flora, fauna and their behavioral patterns, artificial structures, and alien factions and their spacecraft. The game's engine employs several deterministic algorithms such as parameterised mathematical equations that can mimic a wide range of geometry and structure found in nature. Art elements created by human artists are used and altered as well. The game's audio, including ambient sounds and its underlying soundtrack, also uses procedural generation methods from base samples created by Paul Weir and the musical group 65daysofstatic.

    Another thing they could of done, is take inspiration from games like LittleBigPlanet, Minecraft, and Spore. Have player be given a planet and there own creation tools, and let them go wild. and of course in order to see someones planet, you have to space travel to it to see it.

    Both haters and fanboys of the game have been equally immature on this, to be quite honest. I think this has been the most divisive game to come out in years, possibly of all time. The game isn't for everyone; it's a niche exploration game. Putting the performance issues aside, personally? I rather like it; I went in knowing exactly what kind of game it was going to be. This game was going to get massive hate even if it had a perfect launch.

    Procedural Generation is just the devs saying they couldn't be arsed to make it themselves. Obviously no one could ever make 16 quadrillion planets, but I've come across bases floating in mid-air I can't reach just because the tip of it is touching a steep hill Etc.
    Also, why is the whole universe nothing but trees and plants? Why is there not a single civilization on any single planet? not even abandoned ones, would have been great exploring long dead cities/temples Etc.

    • @RFTL
      @RFTL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you are completely right. Thanks to the Open World / Sandbox hype, there is a hype about making ludicrously big games filled with nothing interesting. Even some not Procedural games have already the problem filling their vast world.
      For builder type of games it makes sense. Because the World is nothing more than the Canvas for your Creations.
      Also it's an integral part of the Rouge like experience.
      I also think it can Work if it's used in combination with Handcrafted contend.
      Like generate a template world and then touch it up by hand.
      Or use it to fill the space between handcrafted points of interest.
      I personally like more the randomize something out of a pool of hand crafted parts approach.

    • @elaxter
      @elaxter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Procedural Generation is not bad in itself. It should be something used more in video games. It's a good way to generate large areas without having to put it there by hand. Shit, even the earliest games featured this system. The developers of the original Fallout games certainly didn't place every tile that appeared when you stopped on the map. Some tiles were reserved for towns (the "prebuilt" tiles) and some were reserved for the wasteland (the "procedurally generated" tiles).
      I can imagine devs using procedural generation to create a base, and then touching it up as +RFTL said above me.

    • @Larry
      @Larry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Procedural Generation is just A.I. randomizing a set number of mathematical rules, what it can't ever do is put in any creative component to make things interesting or relevant. It's something only a human can envision (for the time being anyway).
      But it's where Minecraft excels, as it creates a randomly generated world, but then lets the player design what the world looks like. No Man's Sky is Minecraft without the building.

    • @mikeegee21
      @mikeegee21 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You say trees and plants..... any bodies of water, lava, toxic gases, acid.... you know, other than rocks and plants? Gas Giants? Ringed planets, black holes, space phenomena? Planetary exploration sounds great, but not without space stuff going on too.

    • @elaxter
      @elaxter 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Well yeah that's what it is, but "procedural generation" doesn't mean all or nothing. The developer can control how much is generated, and how much is not. I could write a system to generate a small, realistic forest, and then populate it with animals, structures, and events. I still had to model and texture the different trees, as well as write the math in order to generate the trees for the map. Small-scale procedural generation is indistinguishable from just putting everything there manually. If I were a developer who had to copy-paste from a list of 100 different trees every time I wanted to make a believable wood, I wouldn't build large worlds. I would much rather have a "paint brush" to "paint" in some trees (some map building tools allow that sort of stuff).
      If you've ever played SimsCity 4, you can see this in action. Go into God Mode, and put down trees and animals. Not all the trees and animals are the same. It uses math to pick what trees/animals to throw down. As simple as it may be, it's still a form of procedural generation.

  • @spiderjerusalem100
    @spiderjerusalem100 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The idea of exploring a huge galaxy is awesome but this game is just so repetitive and shallow.
    There's no alien civilizations on the planets, the space stations are empty, the animals you find don't even react to you so they may as well not even be there and there's barely anything to do.
    All you do is collect shit so you can combine it with other shit to make more shit then rinse and repeat until you get bored.
    Way too overhyped but it will sell millions of copies because games like this are prime TH-camr bait.

  • @yellowblanka6058
    @yellowblanka6058 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The game has improved in many ways since release - I give the devs props for making a concerted effort to improve it, though the UI still isn't great, and there's still a fair deal of technical bugginess. I would say, if you can get it on sale and enjoy exploration/sandbox games like Minecraft, you'll find much to enjoy with No Man's Sky. There is a lot of micro-management of resources etc. but that goes along with the survival genre. It's far from a perfect game, but with the more recent patches, it's a very decent and enjoyable exploration/building game.

      +NecroFeeLuP Not exactly. It is indie in terms of the game being made by 12 people. Other than that, not really, they haven't published it themselves, as Sony helped them via funding and exclusive to PS4 and PC only at the moment.

    I still like No Man's Sky as a technical concept, but as a game it's SHEEEEEIT.
    EDIT: If anyone's still looking for a good space exploration game, I heard that Elite Dangerous is pretty good. It's like No Man's sky, minus planet exploration, but better in every other way.

    • @compmanio36
      @compmanio36 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same thing as No Man's Sky. Million star systems to go to, but nothing in them to find. Might be true to real life but it doesn't make a good game.

    • @EyesofWrath
      @EyesofWrath 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This. Unfortunately, the genre has been stuck at the first hurdle since the first Elite decades ago - the technical achievement is no longer in simulating the universe, it's filling that universe with things worth doing.

    • @DerPafferfish
      @DerPafferfish 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can land on planets now in Elite I think. Haven't played it in quite a while.
      It's better looking, has better combat, more ships and better trading. That said, there's also not much to do in it either. Sure, you can mine asteroids, hunt pirates, be a pirate yourself and trade but it all amounts to earning money to get a better ship to earn more money. Once you're at the end there's nothing to do since all tasks have overstayed their welcome by then.
      It's a real shame.

    • @compmanio36
      @compmanio36 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't you have to buy the expansion (another $60?) to get planetary landings?
      And the planets on ED are completely barren, nothing at all like NMS. As I said, more realistic, sure....but boring.

    This game is just an example of what's wrong with the gaming industry these days. The game was hyped up to unbelievable levels, and for a while, No Man's Sky was all I ever heard about for days on end. Everyone excitedly went out and bought it to play on their cutting edge PC rigs expecting an amazing next gen gaming experience. But instead we got an unfinished game full of bugs, glitches, bad design choices, and lack of content. But the sheep ran out and bought it anyway, and that's exactly the reward developers see as a cue to make more of this crap, because they know people are gonna buy it regardless as long as it's hyped properly.

    There's nothing wrong with procedural generation. There's a problem with too much procedural generation. Procedural generation works well if you're doing small things, like generating a village to populate a kingdom, and leave the hand crafting to bigger things like the major towns and castles of the kingdom.
    They could have given a few solar systems worth of planets and made the procedural generation more strict for planets, such as just governing a planets atmosphere, size, and amount of life, while handcrafting large elements that wont appear more than a couple times. Having the space around the planets procedurally generated as well, with random encounters and what not. The scale of the game is too large.

    I didn't even think of this until the "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle" quote popped up, but this is basically all the problems I had with Skyrim all over again. Bethesda should be embarrased that their world design is literally on par with a soul-less computer algorithm from an indie developer.

    • @SgtZaqq
      @SgtZaqq 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's exactly my problem with Skyrim, I've never understood why people love it so much. No amount of mods could improve it.

    • @benhardwiesner6963
      @benhardwiesner6963 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zaqq You're just wrong. mods make skyrim to a by far superior game of its time. Its modded graphics are 2016 or even ahead, its modded stories are better than most of the shitty failed AAA Titles the last years and its modded gameplay makes fun even after 500+ hours ...
      After customizing it with 100+ mods it is by far better than any other rpg of its kind out there... even 6 years after release.

    • @Bensaves
      @Bensaves 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zaqq Skyrim Like all Bethesda RPGs, Skyrim's world felt like a cardboard cutout. You cannot suspend your disbelief enough. And of course the dragons and the civil war are barely gameplay without mods.
      Somehow, I still found skyrim fun as hell.

      +A1r80rn3 vanilla skyrim was the most boring bethesda world design... fallout 3, NV and 4 all have for its size very damn good designed maps! To me it didn't happen at all that I found some places in fo4 boring or repetetive...

      Yeah people like minecraft because it has goals and a soul. You build up a character and a house, you dont run out of inventory space every 20 seconds. On top of no mans sky being boring its just poorly designed as a game, it feels like a bunch of retarded early access rejects were in charge of gameplay design.

    • @BlackstarHalo4

      BlackstarHalo4 No mans sky is literally try to gather resources(you cant because inventory is full) wonder why the fuck the items despawned forever then slowly delete shit from inventory to make room for more things. Randomly generated terrain can have its use, like plotting down massive chunks of the land which then one could refine to something presentable (thinking ES IV: Oblivion). But fully procedurally generated worlds will always have problems.

    I guess what impressed me the most about this whole fiasco is that the developers didn't just cut and run. They somehow managed to survive the storm and are still working on trying to improve the game with free updates (at least thus far). While some tedious mechanics still remain, the game have improved quite a bit since this review. Maybe give this a second look after the new update is released later this year.

    I have a love/dissapointed relationship with this game, but for the most part I'm very pleased with it actually. I pre-ordered it with moderate expectations and from the first moment of the game I was in love with the fact that it was just me on a frightening foreign planet with a busted ship and two legs. I was hesitant to even leave the crater my ship was laying in. When I couldn't find any zinc I traveled 21 minutes on foot, ducking into caves to avoid bad weather along the way, towards an unknown "?" destination to finally buy zinc from a terminal in the flatlands. I jogged all the way back to my ship with an amazing sense of accomplishment and found my ship just as I had left it over 40 minutes ago. Leaving the planet was an emotional experience. Every unique experience and every new sight from then on (especially the space station, atlas interface, anomaly, ruin, bizzare planet) envoked a feeling of awe in me. In my first 25 hours not a single resource gathering felt like a grind as I was excited to be able to upgrade my next technology. I really took my time during those 25 hours and explored each planet I came across a good bit before moving on to the next system.
    Now jump ahead 10 more hours and the game has very little new to show me other than the occasional giant flying lizard creature that is nothing like I've seen before. The atlas interfaces and anomalies are all identical, I think I've seen every combination of ruin and ship, and worst of all the once-thrilling threats in the game such as environmental hazards, enemy ships, and sentinels have been exposed as what they really are: deceivingly simple programmed devices that only punish with the smallest slap on the wrist and can be easily avoided as there's always somewhere to hide, a mineral nearby to infinitely heal yourself with, or if you do happen to bite the dust you can just return to that spot and pick up anything you lost when killed. The game also has some massive programming flaws and confusing mechanics. My ship's photon cannons have always been at 0% and the game is telling me to feed them oxides to recharge them but I have no need as they still shoot without ever needing to be refueled! The 10 atlas stone path is also a massive slap in the face as if you sell even one stone you really have no way of obtaining more other than hoping to find a trader with one for an asking price of millions of units, or by using the duplication glitch. Who is going to use up 10 slots in their inventory to store stones that have no apparent use other than to be resold? No one, and it's very disappointing to reach the point where atlas asks for them and you don't have them, even though you quit selling them once you heard they were useful and started storing them back up.
    Overall I do not regret buying the game, I've had many hours of great fun with it and I look forward to getting to the center of the universe soon, but NMS is not for everyone and it is NOT what it was advertised as.

    So I'm having trouble comprehending the point about not being able to go "back" to a planet/system once you have left? Is it still in existence, or is it GONE? If it is GONE then that really sucks a giant one.
