    It would be cool if, after you finish a level, they give you the option to watch it back in constant normal speed from a different angle. It would look like a movie action hero pulling off crazy moves.

      +VonEror Actually, this was a kickstarter game and one of the stretch goals was a map editor, but sadly they were ~$45000 short. Lets hope they get enough money from Steam and are able to make the editor in an update.

      +Tenzing Khedup They sent backers an email stating that free content updates will be coming soon. No news on level editor yet but hopefully it sells enough, it's already on the top sellers list.

      Map Editors are always a great idea, I love shooters with level editors so you can make custom singleplayer or multiplayer maps.
      Every TimeSplitters game comes with a level editor, and it's awesome! You can make levels you can play in either solo with bots or splitscreen with pals, later games even incorporating online multiplayer and map sharing.

    I saw the story mode as a tutorial. The game is actually all about the challenges and endless arenas. I don't understand the criticism about the story being ~2 hours long. If you like the gameplay in the story, then you'll like it even more in the challenge modes and arenas since it get really tough and tests your skills.
    I've put about 5 more hours into the game since beating story mode and I don't plan on putting it down any time soon.

    • @tenorsounds576
      @tenorsounds576 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I'm at about 30 hours total myself. While I understand that some people do really only want a single player story mode and then to be done with it, for SUPERHOT that's just not where most of the meat of the content is. I understand it and I'm not going to judge someone for their preferences, but it's still a little disheartening when a lot of these reviews are saying its a 2 hour game since that + the price are turning people away.
      The post-story modes are where it's at.

    If something is built around something... it's called a game mechanic. Core mechanic, part of the design pillar. Not a gimmick.

    • @DudeSkinnyTall

      +TadejVig I always imagined a game mechanic as someone wearing overalls with a bunch of doohickeys in all pockets, looking like a Mario or Luigi

    I must say, you are pretty much the only reviewer that I've come across that I have a great deal of respect for. You take a professional tone even with titles that you very clearly detest and touch upon aspects of a game that most reviewers wouldn't bother to mention. Even though you do have an occasional tendency to let fanboyism get the better of you (for example your review of black mesa) you are, by and large, the most consistently fain and informative game critic running. I hope that in the very near future your ability to deconstruct the important elements of this medium and weigh them fairly net you the mainstream success you deserve.

    • @RGEGaming16
      @RGEGaming16 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DrearierSpider1 There was going to be a level editor, if the game got enough funds on it's Kickstarter page. But a total of about $300,000 was required, and the total amount that was pledged was $250,798. I might be wrong, but that's what I've deducted from looking at this game's Kickstarter page.

    • @rocksteel9238

    I don't know if you ended all the challenges but there are a few subtle mechanics like the handling of the katana that kept my interest. The game is definitely worth more that 90 minutes gameplay. The UI and the way it is integrated into the story is quite impressible and without spoiling anything there are some hidden unlocks to be found when fiddling with the Ui.

      +Jellyman1303 Actually, I can almost imagine myself HATING Hotline Miami if it had different music and visual style. That music just makes it infinitely easier to just keep repeating same floor of same level again and again and again... without getting neither bored nor (too) frustrated.

    Bonus points for mentioning F.E.A.R. I love that game so much that I wrote two online articles about it (one of which I used in my academic thesis and was featured on Kotaku yesterday). I have yet to play a game whose combat matches the dazzling and visceral nature of F.E.A.R.'s.
    I'll definitely consider playing Superhot in the near-future once I'm done with my academics for the spring.

    • @CyanideBlizzard
      @CyanideBlizzard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michformer It's just a shame that nobody, Monolith Productions included, could ever recapture what made the original F.E.A.R. so great.

    • @Michformer
      @Michformer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A pity indeed. To be honest, things changed considerably for Monolith when folks like Craig Hubbard (one of the visionaries of Monolith FPSs) and Brad Pendleton decided to leave the studio after WB's acquisition of MP.

    • @CyanideBlizzard
      @CyanideBlizzard 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Michformer Too true, good individual! It's especially noticeable with how F.E.A.R. 2 and Condemned 2 were in comparison to their previous entries. Such a shame as well, as they were easily my favorite FPS studio for the creativity they produced and the excitement they generated.

    While the tech is nothing new (think Braid), it's a really cool concept for a puzzle shooter. I feel like this could be implemented as a way to do boss fights in a normal FPS. Something the developer should consider for a sequel. As it is, this game is terribly overpriced, however.

      I'm holding off until a sale and more updates flow in. I mean, a map editor and some bosses that mess with you (say, they'd abuse the fact that time moves with you by standing still till the last possible second to get out of the way and open fire on you simultaneously?) would be an awesome addition.
      On an unrelated note, nice to see you here.

    • @Ghost_Of_SAS

      That would be a good addition yes. What it desperately needs is a community hub where people can share created levels. That would do wonders for cushioning the blow of the steep price of admission.

    Thank you for review! SUPERHOT quickly dragged me in by its strong atmosphere, disturbing and mysterious story, original concept full of fresh ideas, great level design, many ways to succeed, challenging yet not frustrating difficulty, simple and responsive controls, stylish graphics and atmospheric sounds. It has brought fresh new mechanics to the FPS genre and makes you feel like the hero of a Hong Kong action movie dancing between the slow motion bullets and killing tons of enemies in many ways. Great job!

    The "game is 2 hours" criticism is unfounded and seriously just false. This is probably the best crowdfunded game ever made. The campaign is basically a tutorial for the hundreds of endless and challenge modes. If you buy this game with the intention of playing just the story, that is your problem. I am 40+ hours (forgoing sleep) in and have been hooked on challenge and endless modes. Not to mention the loads of secrets hidden throughout the game.

    I do definitely think this game is a niche type game. The ambiguous story and unique graphics, as well as the slight differences with the challenge modes do add new things that may appeal to some, but not everybody. And I've got to agree, the audio could have been done a lot better. I think there are definitely people who would absolutely love this game and spend countless hours on it (myself included) and others who may be a little underwhelmed.

Having watched TB's review, and considering that the game is short, I understand the game modes unlocked once you finish the game give you a lot of replayability, if you enjoy the core game mechanics. Sincé this game is more of a puzzler than a straight-up FPS, I can see people replaying it a lot. On another note... what's the beef with Devil Daggers, bro?? :/

    I loved Super Hot and I agree with most of what you said and others in the comments. We need a map editor and it's too damned short. I didn't necessarily need more modes but more weapons, more levels, those would have been nice. Possible environmental destruction? Oh man, scouting out an area and plotting your next move... hopefully they make a sequel and put all of this in.

    You didn't mention the price:
    $26 for a short game seems VERY far fetched and it could feel like a cash grab.
    If it is worth $26 then fine, but wouldn't $10-$15 seem more reasonable in price.
    The game itself is good though.

    • @tenorsounds576
      @tenorsounds576 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I have over 30 hours in the game, the story is short but this idea that the game is a 2 hour experience and too short for the asking price is a bit silly.
      It's an arcade game at heart with a "story" mode and a bunch of other stuff. It feels like someone buying Street Fighter, beating the story mode with one character, and then going "well that wasn't worth $60 bucks!"
      Well no, that one element of the game probably wasn't worth $60 bucks. But that doesn't mean the devs are ripping people off, it just means that a robust single-player campaign is not what this game was going for.

  • @detectivelizard9532

    This game looks really cool but it's around $25 on Steam and for an 80 minute game that seems like quite a premium to play something that's very experimental.

      The story is about 2 hours, sure, but SUPERHOT is not a 2 hour game. It's like being mad that the story mode in a fighting game for one character is too short; sure, but that's not all you're paying for.

    Great concept, nice visuals, I actually really love the sound effects, but yeah... it's so short! I wish the actual story mode was more stretched out. This is a game where they could randomly put lots of levels without real problems with the storyline.
    It's a fun game and I loved that it throwed the played in many different situations so it never felt repetitive, but it should have been much more. I think it's kinda overpriced for the content, but it's innovative and super fun until it ends.
    The game really needs a level editor where you can build from primitives and precreated assets with some simple scripting. Also it would be cool if the levels were uploaded to a server so the community made maps could be played by everyone.

    The game definitely can deliver more. The challenges are really fun , especially the one where you can only use the Katana, the coolest weapon in the game. Endless mode is also fun, with the cool maps, and I've even found a new weapon in the form of a Shuriken, which I don't believe we're in story mode.

    I feel as if it would have been better if they had kept in mind that just because people loved a beta, it doesn't mean they will be happy with the same amount.
    My guess is they thought that a game thats just a biiit longer than the demo would have been enough.
    They didn't understand that people wanted *far far more* and in my opinion it would have been far better if they had made it longer and added more, perhaps even an alternate mechanic where the faster you go the slower time gets for some levels.

    • @tenorsounds576
      @tenorsounds576 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honestly, the story mode plus the slew of extra modes you unlock afterwards has been more than enough to get my money's worth. The story mode is more like a tutorial for the challenges and Endless Mode, and if that's not what someone is looking for that's fine but it's not like the devs made a cut and dry 2 hour campaign and said "yep, this is all they need".

  • @FreeArtFreestheWorld
    @FreeArtFreestheWorld 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree. The idea is killer but the execution left a lot to be desired. I thought the game was just too vignette-y. And the gimmick of "is the game playing you or are you playing the game" was too obtrusive to the actual gameplay. I'm one of those guys that doesn't really care about story, just let me play the game, and any game that takes control completely away from me for several minutes is a red flag for me. I thought the whole subversive "is this real or a dream" idea was better done in the two Hotline Miami games.

      +ratchet256 Walking simulator is completely fair tho, if only sort of thing you do trough entire game is... walking (see Dear Esther).
      Not to mention that even the people on the completely opposite side of gaming spectrum from Gggman, like Jim Sterling, accept both that term and the fact that it is a fair name and a perfect fit for some games.

    I feel like this game is still something of a proof of concept. When Portal came out it felt pretty complete, but Portal 2 was a pretty excellent continuation. I'm thinking that if Super Hot gets a Portal 2 like sequel, that will be what feels like a complete game.

    • @tenorsounds576
      @tenorsounds576 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And yet there are plenty of people who feel Portal was exactly as long as it needed to be, and Portal 2 was bogged down by all the story. They're both complete games, it's just whether you're looking for a more concise and focused experience or a more fleshed-out, narrative one.

      It's a shame that he dismisses the endless and challenge modes pretty quickly in the review, that is where most of the meat of the game is. If you want this gameplay with a robust story then yeah, you might feel like you didn't get your money's worth. But the ones who treat it more like an arcade game with a short story mode are the ones with 50+ hours on the game, and I think they'd tell you it was worth the $25
