    Doom (typeset as DOOM in official documents) is a 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter (FPS) video game by id Software. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in the video game industry, for having ushered in the popularity of the first-person shooter genre. The original game was divided into three nine-level episodes and was distributed via shareware and mail order. The Ultimate Doom, an updated release of the original game featuring a fourth episode, was released in 1995 and sold at retail.
    In Doom, players assume the role of an unnamed space marine, who became popularly known as "Doomguy", fighting his way through hordes of invading demons from Hell. With one third of the game, nine levels, distributed as shareware, Doom was played by an estimated 15-20 million people within two years of its release, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture. In addition to popularizing the FPS genre, it pioneered immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming, and support for customized additions and modifications via packaged files in a data archive known as "WADs". As a sign of its effect on the industry, first-person shooter games from the genre's boom in the 1990s, helped in no small part by the game's release, became known simply as "Doom clones". Its graphic violence, as well as satanic imagery, made Doom the subject of controversy.
    The Doom franchise was later continued with the follow-up Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994) and numerous expansion packs, including Master Levels for Doom II (1995), and Final Doom (1996). Originally released for PC DOS, the games have later been ported to numerous other platforms. Once the game's source code was released in 1997, it spawned even more adaptations, as fans further ported the code to countless devices. The series started to lose mainstream appeal as the technology of the Doom game engine was surpassed in the mid-1990s, although fans have continued making WADs, speedruns, and modifications to the original. The franchise again received popular attention in 2004 with the release of Doom 3, a retelling of the original game using new technology, and an associated 2005 Doom motion picture. Doom 4 was announced as in production in 2008 and was later retitled simply as Doom.

    It truly is amazing how mechanically solid this game was, especially considering how few FPS had come before it. Well over 20 years later, and there's still only a small handful of other FPS games you could make a strong argument for being better than Doom.

    Despite being in my 30's, I've only recently gotten into DOOM 1 and 2 thanks to source ports (the original incarnations gave me motion sickness). It really is amazing how well these games have aged, to the point where it feels like a breath of fresh air compared to most modern shooters. Factor in a treasure trove of custom content from a still-active modding community and the replay value is practically endless.

    Doom's shotgun actually has RANGE!!! The shotgun isn't overpowered either since you're fighting demons instead of people like most FPS's nowadays. The fact that Doom has a shotgun that isn't a glorified melee weapon like in Halo 3 or Doom 3 (ironic, eh?) automatically knocks it up a few point for me. Doom is just pure fun, more fun than I've had in a while. Doom actually made me jump too, despite not being a horror game. I believe it's mission 4, 5, or 6 in episode 1, where you go through this sort of maze to find a yellow key card. A Pinky demon came out of a corner, and since I wasn't expecting it I jump out of my seat. That combined with the gunplay tells you you're playing something special.

      @weab 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Just curious. I'd recommend doing as much research as possible before getting too hyped; DOOM 2016 probably won't deliver everything you're expecting from it. For reference, I've played both the beta and the alpha. The game plays a lot differently than it looks in the trailers. That's not to say it's intrinsically _bad_, but the game is definitely aimed at an audience other than just fans of classic DOOM, and it really shows. I can't tell you whether you'll enjoy it or not, but I'd recommend being cautious and keeping your expectations low.

My first personal copy of doom was on the 32x and then around 96 got the ps1 version and that's the version I played the most I loved it...

    I played Doom 2 long before Doom, since it was a store-shelf-bound commercial release, but there's something about the first one, especially that first episode, that gives me the warm and fuzzies. I'd encourage everyone who's been through Doom 100 times to check out the fan-made Doom The Way Id Did if they want another dose of the original's style.

    The great thing about doom is that it has a lot of the same design philosophies as old 2d games. Very distinct enemy and level design being among them. Modern games have enemies that look too much alike and level design seems more like a copy paste job.

    • @ar_xiv
      @ar_xiv 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Alan Lee totally. the engine being locked to a single plane (with variations in height but no stacking) forced some really creative design solutions. also, all the moving platforms and hidden walls and so forth.... modern fps's obviously can throw a lot more geometry at you but where are all of the tricky moving parts in level design??

    "The last shooting game I'd played was Wolfenstein 3D which was impressive enough but holy shit when Doom came out we all just lost it."
    I couldn't agree more. Technological and graphical leaps seemed all the more profound in the 90s, compared to today. This game, and countless others afterwards, were the reason I entered the annual PC upgrade cycle from then until about five years ago. Doom required at least a 486 DX to play 'properly'; as much as I loved my 386 it just could no longer cut it.
    Nostalgia is often viewed through rose-tinted spectacles, but playing Doom today still evokes that amazing feeling that I remember as a child. Thanks for a great review.

      @@Rountree1985 The chainsaw and fists both do 2-20 damage per hit in single player. The fists hit 123.5 times per minute, while the chainsaw hits 525 times per minute (yes, I made a mistake above, the chainsaw is FOUR times as fast, not ten). Their damage values are identical. In terms of point for point damage output in a single attack, yes, they are dealing the same average damage. If you're looking at an average over time, fine, that's not going to be the same.

    I first played Doom when I was 13(I'm almost 20) and out of all the fps games I've played over the years Doom 1 & 2 are my favorite to come back too. ID software is probably my favorite FPS dev in the industry. I love their other games like Doom 3, Quake 3 Arena, Wolfenstein 3D and Quake 4. Even though it was made by machine games Wolfenstein the new order and the old blood are probably my favorite games of this generation so far. They did such a good job calling back to that old school feel with fast gameplay and a ridiculous amount of violence. I'm so ready for Doom 4, it's not even funny. I generally don't pre-order games but I just pre-ordered in full because I'm that excited to play it.

    The fact that you like the first episode is no coincidence. John Romero said in an interview that when designing the levels for the game, they started with the final levels in Inferno, and finished the levels in knee deep in the dead last. This was so they could get more experience in mapping out each level, so that they could make each level near the start of the game more balanced and intricate. That’s why the final level in Inferno is a basic arena, because it’s the first doom map that ID developed.

    • @Arrinao
      @Arrinao 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mmm I think you got that wrong (or maybe I had). I remember John Romero mentioning doing the "first as last" about e1m1. There was no mention AFAIK about doing a whole episode this way. He and Sandy Petersen worked on them paralelly. JR made first one while SP second and third, finishing some of the levels, started by Tom Hall in the process.

    Funny thing: While I like Doom 2 overall a little bit more than Doom 1, I think, that Doom 1 has WAY better level design. At least first three episodes. Well, Doom is my favorite FPS title, thats just it, but I fucking hate Final Doom. Those WADs are horrible gameplay-wise and they are inconsistent in terms of level design and they don't add anything new to gameplay at all! Go and play Doom 1 and Doom 2... maybe Doom 3 and new Doom release when it comes out (I hope, they won't fuck it up). But don't play Final Doom. Never!

    • @OmegaEnvych
      @OmegaEnvych 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soulsphere9242 True - if Final Doom was just that - a community level packs, it would be fine, but as payed expansion I still think of it lower than other Doom Titles. I'm glad that both Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal turned out being good games, but that sets Final Doom for me even lower. Again - main reason - you had to pay for them back then. As free addition for newer Doom/Doom 2 official port they are fine.

    To me, the games that I come back to the most when I'm bored are Shogo and F.E.A.R.. The former still dazzles me with its masterful blend of mecha anime and Doom/Quake-like gunplay that makes me long for a modern anime-style FPS, and the latter still has some of the best AI and gunplay in gaming history (all wrapped up in a effectively haunting J-horror package). These games had such a huge impact on me that I used them as case studies in my academic paper on Japanese-influenced FPSs, a project that got the attention of some noteworthy developers.

    My Lord Gggmsnlives, I applaud how thorough and considerate your reviews are. I especially like how you reviewed Doom+Doom II: you touch on all the facets which made the games unique and impressive, for their time and today. From replaying Doom, whether it is DOS or ZDoom, it still fascinates me how well it excels over other first person games at the time, and how it still has much to offer today. As ZDoom and other Doom ports are steadily improving, I keep hoping that Doom modders would combine what works in Doom with the elements of other games, like System Shock or Deus Ex, or even the Build engine games. Some Doom veterans have been working on new games with Doom's engine, such as The Adventures of Square (which I recommend checking out).

    I agree that the level design sometimes is so so going further in these classic games. Even in Heretic i find the first episode very good and the later ones go downhill with new enemies and textures being the most exciting thing.
    The best classic experience is when there's:
    - well thought weapon characterization (every one has a certain use or uses and you need to use all of them soon or later)
    - organic level design (shortcuts, secrets, use of all the place available within size of rooms, height, light/dark, doors and elevators access, even better when the level "opens up" while playing giving different fighting situations every time)
    - smart item placement (playing must not be too tedious offering ammo when it's needed but not too much for harder difficulties, having that survival feeling that you need to rethink your way of proceeding if not you are wasting ammo or health. also i love the idea that the items are placed also to finish the level without transfering all the weapons, ammo, etc from the previous levels but starting with the basic weapons and full health only )
    - fast pacing (you are force in various times to run, dodge and shoot like crazy to survive)
    - feeling the world (music, sound, graphics must give you the idea of being challenged and in a dire situation)
    - interesting monster design (different ways of attacking you, maybe even working together in new ways against you, AI that can be tricked sometimes in a smart way, having to combat differently the same monster when you are in different situations)
    - movement feeling (having a smooth walking animation, jumping/falling possibilities and so on add much to the gameplay. slow characters with clunky jumping are a pain with FPS games focused on fast paced shooting)

    Congrats on your channel bruh.
    I remember playing this for the first time in 95. First computer I got since the good ol' C64 in late 80's, and never seen anything like it! Took me like 30+ hours to finish just the shareware version, on about medium difficulty. 😄

    I watched the 1st Terminator movie as a kid too. But I never played DOOM, because I didn't own a computer, until me and my family moved. But I only played DOOM 3, but as for the original DOOM games, I only played DOOM 2.
    Also your reviews are really enjoyable. :)
