    Mirror's Edge Catalyst is an action-adventure platform video game developed by EA DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2016. It is a reboot of 2008's Mirror's Edge and revolves around protagonist Faith's origin and her attempt to overthrow a totalitarian conglomerate of corporations who rule the city of Glass.
    Mirror's Edge Catalyst was released to a mixed critical reception, with most reviewers praising the free-running gameplay and visuals but criticizing the story.

      Soul games are so brave they change nothing and gimp magic/range to be challenging yet still staying a broken mess in gameplay and technology.
      Every "soul clones" are much bolder in gameplay design than souls, as a result, they feel easier. They give OPTIONS, while in souls, you roll n smack because that's the only way to deal decent damage that isnt tedious and/or eat into your resource (btw 1 resource pools to spend for BOTH gears n character build is a bad idea. It is constricting, encourage grinding while staying mindless because you dont have to optimise your income, you just need to kill more dudes). They reinforce this playstyle further in each game by decreasing stamina cost for rolling and bloat enemies health. The challenge come from the hard hitting enemies, which they allow to stun lock you in 2 and 3 regardless of what you wear because lol challenge. The camera system that is more narrow than a console shooter with clunkier control than a survival horror. The evasion system that only work 0.5 sec after you press the button because we have to tie it to running (for some shitty reason), and that you evade not based on visual cue but based on that happen IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ANIMATION. Atlease have some decency and speed it up to match the number of 3 GAMES LATER. Or remove it and make a first person game if you cant programm a camera worth a damn (but judging from their framerate history, they can make first person asset up to snuff anyway).
      Not to mention the absolute shit online they cant (be bothered to) fix and balance after 5 games with more or less the same system. Just add more sprinkle on top. They even regress from 2 because it isnt the president's pet project.
      Inb4 git gud. I finished all of them and played more builds than sword/giant sword/ultra giant sword and no shield because options are for scrubs. And they still cant make enemies interesting to fight outside making you roll more (the hardest boss is the one i must press roll 4 time each time he start swingging). The franchise should be put to rest or they will just recycle the same thing, the same ideas again and again.

    I don't mind the open world, hell, I wanted the first Mirror's Edge to be open world, it's just a natural fit for the parkour thing going on, but if there is always a clear superior route to a destination (highlighted by a fucking trail no less), then what's the bloody point of open world? -_-
    Also disappointed for forced combat, just knocking a couple guards to create a opening for a desperate escape fits the theme best, I don't want to knock out everyone in my way like I'm batman...
    And why everyone looks like a bunch of emo-hipster type teenagers? I think they should've taken the story way less seriously, the world is now clean and perfect and they are just some rebels causing trouble cause the don't like being told what to do, they should admit that and go on with being a rebel, just like the rollerblading dudes with spray canisters from Jet Set Radio.

    • @EternalDahaka
      @EternalDahaka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the runner path is already tedious enough(I'd be fine if you could toggle it though), but him saying that there's only a few routes to areas is a downer. That could fly in a lot of specific areas, but the point of open world games is to have a huge amount of ways to move around them.
      How hard is it to make a decent first-person combat system? Even if you only have two general types of attacks and simple combos for them, dodging could easily be refined.

    • @SSaNNEE100
      @SSaNNEE100 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +EternalDahaka first of all, no one ever said at Dice that this is an open world game. Even in one of the interviews, one producer fixed the interviewer all the time when he talked about the open world. He said "we call them free roamable areas". When you're going from rooftop to rooftop there are only various routes of course. even in real life. But as I now already know that people will loose their shit by shouting at me "games should not be realistic, they should be fun!!" I'm just telling then they should've built unrealistic playing ground with just building blocks here and there in order to make it more like an open world. But then the Glass' design would've surffered from that. I like the game how it is now.

    • @KittyBoom360
      @KittyBoom360 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexander, spot on! Whenever a reviewer calls it "open world", it's a sign they don't know what they are talking about here.

      Fair enough. Wasn't aware of that.
      The game world might be fine. I don't know since I haven't played it. I didn't expect tons of ways to get to certain areas, but hearing that there were only a few sounded like it might be limited.

  • @nbrosna1
    @nbrosna1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Gotta say I'm surprised at how much I disagree with your opinion on this game. I respect your preference, but I definitely thought it was a much more polished version of the first. The parkour was smoother and more reliable, and I liked the aesthetic and graphics. Also, I really enjoyed the melee combat. It was completely overhauled from the first, and I thought it was very intuitive when comparing the two. I've personally never liked strict melee combat in a first person game, but this one really did it for me. Since you said it was the worst melee you've seen in a FPP game, what games did you think did it a lot better?
    Also, I'm curious, am I the only one that didn't think this game was a complete disaster? Definitely no masterpiece, and the story is utter nonsensical garbage, but an enjoyable play for me.

    5:30 - The DNA excuse doesn't fly with me. You could use enemy guns just fine in the first games, if you looted them. And even if every single gun in the game was DNA locked, what's stopping you from bringing even a basic sidearm strapped to a hip along? It's not like free runners have to get around naked because of weight limitations or anything.

    • @Dongulator
      @Dongulator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, if you did strap a pistol to your leg or hip and tried to do parkour, you would immediately notice an imbalance of weight on your body. This would make running feel weird and balancing a lot more difficult. Also, it could possibly get in the way of more flexible movements.

      in the first game you kept the gun in your hands. (no holster) and every weapon but a pistol prevented you from parkour.
      the pistol also had to be dropped to climb.
      there was an incentive to beat the game without killing anyone with guns tho.
      but yeah it's stupid as hell.

    Mirror’s Edge is one of my favorite games and since I recently got a PS4 I bought Catalyst, it was only 15$. I’ve only played a few hours but so far I like it. The graphics aren’t as tight as the original and it’s lost some of its novelty, the open world setting is actually a pretty nice idea (even if it’s just an excuse to play out various timed challenges.)

    the upgrade tree was actually a brilliant idea that remedied the whole "dump all the mechanics in the first 20 minutes" problem u mentioned in the review for ME1 (though auto-unlocking skills in the story is bs). The open world thing was what everyone seemed to want (not a few, me included). Dice had no other way to make this game.
    The combat though, evryone agrees that it could've taken a different direction, one that didn't stop you on your track when you engage. The game's about running, so fighting really shouldn't stop you.

    I liked the first game, liked it enough that I did an entire run of it without using any guns so I could get the Pacifist achievement for Xbox 360. Even though it was difficult, it was fun and satisfying, similar to when I beat Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Old Blood on the hardest difficulty. Seeing the melee mechanics in this though... it disappoints me. The melee system in the original was basic and often times buggy, but it got the job done. This just looks like a bunch of teenagers pretending to fight one another in their mother's backyard. I was hoping that this game would improve on the original's formula, but once again they had to fuck it up.

This, however... it just seems like you're saying 'it's bad' repeatedly, while the gameplay on screen looks fine. More than fine, it looks great. The running looks fast and responsive, the graphics are good, the melee combat looks great, but you just go 'no, it's all bad, look at it'.

      While i thought the graphics and gameplay were good, i couldn't get into it. I literally didn't touch the game after the first 30 minutes of it. I found the story and city to be rather dull and the open world feel wasn't present for me really. It's pretty obvious that DICE was busy with Battlefield 1 when this game was still in development. They didn't care and in turn, we didn't care as well as they didn't really want us to.

Like you even though I disagree with his opinion at times I always try to see his P.o.V but for starters, there is not a single point in the game you are forced to fight. It is actually almost always encouraged and easier to run away and if you take the time to get good at the movement it is super easy to do.

    I've been on the fence with this game for the past few days, and I've found your review to really be the tipping point on my decision. It's a shame too, because the original Mirror's Edge was a pre-order purchase for me and I could appreciate the experimentation and attempts despite the mistakes, yet it doesn't seem enough progress has occurred in the rough 8 years since the original release.

      @KittyBoom360 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's weird what pisses off gamers. I get why a lot of people won't love this game but don't get the degree of hate. Look at Metacritic. Critical reviews give it a 75 out of 100, which seems fair enough, however user reviews are brutal and mean and totally unfair at 3.5 out of 10 because the haters gave it as low as 0, seriously, WTF?
      Being able to have fun with a game like this vs disliking the experience depends a lot on the player's well being, attitudes, and willingness for some easy fun. Sometimes, a review reflects more about the player than the dev.

    • @SabbyNeko

      You can pull off some really cool shit. Like kick one guy so he stumbles into another, then bounce to a wall, push off of it and kick through both of them. I imagine if you're just trying to get their health down without losing your own, it might be a lot of flair and no substance, but when most of your kills are quick and contextual while on the move, it feels amazing.
      Maybe if GG could go into detail about why he doesn't like the combat. That motion blur is a bit excessive, so I imagine if you left that on and had a low FOV, it would be puke inducing, but his footage had a good FOV. I get motion sickness from a lot of first person games if they have blur and low FOV, and Catalyst doesn't effect me at all. It's fast, smooth and cool as shit to look at.

    Just an opinion. Maybe the reason everybody likes the original more is that they were all younger? The cons of the past titles are less remembered than the pros, ergo, that's why we raise the quality bar of this reboot so high that barely anyone's happy with this game. When playing we constantly make comparisons of what Catalyst does worse/better than the original and that kinda pulls you out of the immersion. Complete immersion is what makes us really enjoy the game.

    • @UneXDesigns
      @UneXDesigns 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "more fresh/innovative". What does that even mean? Does it mean that Catalyst didn't meet your expectations? Mirrors Edge at it's core is a skill game. The real enjoyment shines when you build your skills high enough so that you could travel through buildings with ease. All discussions about ME's open world are all blown out. ME's open world main aim was to bring freedom to the way you roam the world, despite the RPG elements like side-quests and collectibles. That freedom makes me appreciate the game for what it is - a first-person platformer.

Now I've watched few reviews here and there and I see people don't like it. It's weird because I created my own opinion while playing it and for me it is like 9/10 game. Just wished they kept the linear gamestyle, because the free roamable world just destroyed some of the mechanics of the game.

    I liked the aesthetic more in the original game, it was still sterile and kind of soulless in a "corporate art" kind of way, but it was much more practical, grounded in current technologies, and made heavier use of concrete. The industrial areas looked practical and informed by reality, and the upper-class offices looked safe and inoffensive, like they were designed by committee, without an ounce of creativity. Its look and feel was very close to several major cities in the US today. Mirror's Edge Catalyst on the other hand is very deliberate and contrived in its vision of a hypothetical future, and I don't find it as compelling.

    I feel the sensible thing to do in terms of player freedom would have been to take a page from Hitman's book. Give us a medium-sized open level (one city block, say) and multiple goals to achieve any way we want, and encourage and reward map knowledge and mastery.
    That way the polish and visual interest wouldn't have suffered so much, maybe. The environments in this game look a lot more...gamey than they did in the first.

    Didn't he complained that the first game had bare bones stiff combat, and how the game was too linear to give players feel of making their own flow of movement in art of parkour?
    Why does he not think these are improvements? (PS: The combat is very flawed, but is a lot better if you're doing the right combo. Just mashing kicks isn't going to be enjoyable. You've gotta mix it up. Wallrun-kick. Vault punch. Kick, then punch. Or stun then slide-kick, then punch a bunch.)

    I don't mind the upgrade system because it doesn't really affect the pace of the game like a typical rpg. I also think you are doing yourself a disservice by not turning off runners vision. You have to understand that Mirror's Edge plays at its best when you can solve parkour obstacles with your own two eyes. Turning off runners vision transforms Mirror's Edge into a first person puzzle platforming game, and the puzzle aspect is very important if you consider that real parkour runners have to solve similar puzzle challenges when traversing obstacles. antisocialfatman, who is one of my favorite youtube game reviewer made a very nice analogy of the design principles of System Shock 2 in his review of the original Mirror's Edge(it's an old review, but I recommend you check it out). I definitely believe that those same principles hold true in Catalyst and in many cases the game significantly improves on those principles.

  • @GentleHeretic
    @GentleHeretic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    How did they screw this up despite adding more things to do? Easy, they didn't refine the better aspects of the original and purify them into the game's essentials, while simultaneously removing the weaker aspects. Contrast this with System Shock 2, Thief II, or Hitman: Blood Money, which took everything that made their predecessors' great without piling on needless additions to the formula (such as open worlds, non-sequitur reboot plots, or pointless action sequences). This could have been awesome, but they didn't take the time to think about what made the original great and what made it flawed, and thus they piled on the standard "instant fixes" to any game franchise that lack direction these days. A shame too, because there's not that many parkour games on the market like this, and I'll be darned if I don't like free running in my video games (it's the reason I played Assassin's Creed for as long as I did).

    I've tried this game out once in a friend's PS4, and, as a fan of the original game, I thought it was still a fun open-world-ish parkour game despite the glaring flaws, and the game being kind of awkward for me to play with a controller. In the other hand, my friend (also a fan) was a bit pissed off about it.
    He got this game for around 2900 PHP. The PC/Origin version was more expensive, but it later dropped down to around 1685 PHP (sooner and cheaper than I expected), and, with the ORIGIN50 promo, I got it for only 614 PHP. Now I feel bad for telling him the whole thing, 'cause he now thinks he's been ripped off.

    There were only 4 or so main characters in the original game. It made more sense to have the context ambiguous when the character's personal lives were merely vignettes, it looks like there are 6+ characters that they waste time trying to develop. Mirror's Edge is about aesthetics and action, the story's just there to give the character the motivation the player has...because the player's motivation is TO PLAY THE GAME.

    If you base your expectations of good combat around the depth of realism then of course you're gonna be disappointed, nobody comments of how in mortal combat your enemy tumbles in the most ridiculous ways when being pierced by sais. I can't speak for this demake but the combat in the original was a welcome change of pace, despite being a tad unforgiving if you just started out. Slide-kicking someone in the stomach as they bow down in pain then kinking them in the face from below i found quite hilarious. And fighting was pretty much completely optional, let alone fighting with your fists. Disarming someone from point blank without adrenaline felt quite badass for me. All in all fighting the derpy metro-cops made for a quite hilarious experience. I really don't appreciate how much shit you give certain classic game titles, because the original always had me coming back to keep on exploring all possible routes and jumps. The achievements too were a great way of hinting the player in the right direction if you want more stuff to do instead of being obsolete "do this that often"-tasks. Heck they even taught players new interesting moves. It's as if the achievements served an actual purpose instead of shlicking the player off. And there *were* missions on ground-level.

And I hate to say it, but your complaints about the gameplay both here and for the first one really just sound like you suck at it, like, it's challenging but I rarely if ever had any incidents that I thought were blatant bullshit.
