    I’d raise the suspension up a smidge, maybe 10mm, it’s too low for that exhaust on crappy potholed UK roads.

    Fit a skid plate to the silencer. It will help it ride over obstructions rather than catching on an edge.

    Dan, I was holding out for a mk1 for sale that sang to me and I ended up pulling the trigger on one quite a while back. Not a GTI but a 3dr GLS 1.5 1978. The reason being that it had 1 owner from new, only driven during the summer, and only if it was dry. ZERO rot plus all factory original etched glass, however the previous owner was a bit of a tinkerer and did some “interesting” mods from the 80’s inc. GTI 5 speed, seats, steering wheel, tear drop alloys, 2.5” straight through exhaust, and a very strange cruise control computer module on the centre console that has loads of buttons and a led numerical display (think 1980’s calculator). He also did a 2 tone respray and added a (still immaculate) BBS body kit. The paint is passable but rough in patches so I’ve started the strip down and inspection. A newly acquired 1.8t agu and gearbox is being stripped and inspected before I commence a rebuild with selected upgrades. I’m gonna respray the lot before rebuilding and swapping out/upgrading for much better function (the brakes are shocking!) and aesthetics. I’ve been accumulating trick parts from online auctions (I’m a seasoned eBay sniper) for months, if not years, so the inventory is looking interesting.
    Seeing you attain new skills and confidence in your build, through to now enjoying all that hard work, is inspiring. Keep it up, fella! I can’t wait to get my own project back on the road 🤙🏼

    It’d be interesting for you to do a video on the cost of the project, obviously you wouldn’t be able to put a cost on the labour but it would be interesting for anyone who would want to consider doing something similar

      I’d also be curious what the street value is now. I know that sometimes people don’t care about break even/profit in a build cause they just love the car, etc, etc, but a lot of people can’t afford to do a resto past the point of being able to get their money back. A body off restomod like this has no doubt put it waaaay past the street value of the car (not considering how much of it was free from sponsors). I’m not talking shit, I just think it’s important for people (especially ones in the comments here) to realize that a project like this could be fun but if you’re not careful you will be upside down financially when you sell it.

    Reminds me when I went to pick up a mk1 cabriolet from Coalville, got half way home to Leicester and the gear stick came off in my hand 🤣 managed to mackle it back together and drive it home in 3rd gear! 🤣 those are the days you look back on and laugh about... but you are lucky it could have been a whole different story 🙈

    First trips with rebuilt cars are nerve wracking. A old saab two stroke I did was the worst. Loads of electric gremlins. Even new parts played up. But once sorted it put a smile on my face. Glad your mishap didn't get any worse.

  • @briangreen6602

    You want a shallow angle skid plate from the exhaust box, to the pipe. Also considered it's a tad too low, and next time even with skid plate, it may still do damage by forcing the exhaust upwards, rather than straight back in to a fuel tank.

    Can’t help thinking that the Original red/black striped material centres in those seats would have made that interior absolute killer

      There's a mk1 for sale on ebay right now that has zender turbo 2 alloys. I'd love to ask how much he'd want for them but I know I wouldn't be able to afford them.

    Enjoyed the whole build of this very nice GTI so much.
    @15:45 Yeah tuned/restomod old hot hatches are fun got an almost as new 1993 Renault 19 16v (LHD) with a 2.0 16v (F7R) low boost turbo conversion ~240HP/320Nm, big brake kit etc.... Too much fun! 😎😎

    Thank goodness you didn't have a fire 😳. I run a trackslag with my 3.2 24v and it does run low. The 24v sump scares me with how low it is. I now run lift cups so speed bumps and pot holes aren't an issue (well if you spot them first 🤣). Keep up the great work. She really is a beauty 😍

    Add a skid plate to the front of the muffler so it can't catch on anything. Glad everything was ok and no fire.

    Your car is mint what a beauty happy it wasn’t too much damage !

  • @paulcushnie
    @paulcushnie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What extinguisher did you go for? If its abc powder get rid of it. If you do use it the car is a write off anyway as the powder eats away at the metal and it will rust before you know it. Go with foam, clean adgent or there is a thing called the fire safety stick which is nice and small you could keep it in the glove box or door card. Dont think stick comply yet to British standards bs5603 but do meet with eu standards or en3 as its known. Also as a former many mk2 scirocco owner the brakes were terrible with a servo so your pedal box is probably giving the same amount of braking.

    Could've been a lot worse considering. My mk1 has a v5 conversion and the sump is very low so I've learnt to not lower it too much and always keep an eye out of anything in the road that sticks up. I don't think a shortened sump exists for that engine so I'm stuck with how it is.

    My Mk1 did similar, the previous owner had removed the fuel sender and not put it back correctly. Fine on the two quid of unleaded he left in it, untill you filled it upand it sloshed out all over the road any my exhaust.

    Love the way you say 'perfect hole!' is that opposed to an imperfect hole, or a hole that lets nothing out ??????????? Glad nothing worse!!!!!!! Gold VW badge?!?!?!? I seem to remember that on rally cars the fitted a skid plate to the exhaust so if it hit anything it would ride over it not like you did sudden dead impact???

    If the car puts a smile on your face, then it's worth all the blood sweat and tears. For me , if lowering a vehicle adversely effects the drivability, its too low. Maybe come up 10mm .

  • @boastyy
    @boastyy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank God there was no fire, that would have been terrible after all the work you put into it. Another option would be to lose the silencer and straight pipe it, should give you much more room underneath.

    1983 GOLF GTI, 110bhp, 112PS, 0-60mph in 9.5 sec, 0-62mph in 9.7sec, You should buy 2010 Toyota Corolla Specs, XRS, 2.4L i4, 5MT, 158 @ 6000 rpm, 7.4 sec, 1/4mile 16.1 sec. It is better 1983 Golf GTi 110bhp away. Collora 2.4L i4 158hp Naturally, If You Add a Big Turbo 500hp. It will become GoatZilla 658hp Which Bigger Than NISMO GTR 600hp. 0-60mph in 3.2 sec, 1/4 mile only 11 sec, Faster Than Supra MK4&5 need 12 sec.

    What a bummer. Only in the UK. No other developed country has such a bad infrastructure with such terrible roads. Of course, not every country in Europe has only good roads but none are as bad and tiny as in this country. Frankly, some third world countries have better roads. Kinda takes the fun out of the hobby. Really hope for you that you are now high enough. Fingers crossed.

  • @jamesmannion1210
    @jamesmannion1210 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You'll want to make a heat shield for the gear linkage if you raise the exhaust up close to it or your selector will feel notchy when the car is hot.
