Good move on the smaller wheels and tires, much nicer drive on 16" compared to 17" in my opinion. Narrower wheels are also less twitchy on road damage and grooves etc. Always do the following when buying a used car with some mileage: Get a standard set of small wheels, fit new A-brand tires, replace shocks (at least the rear ones, as it is very cheap and easy to do on most cars) and do an alignment when in doubt (steering a bit off, tire wear not even etc.). I bought a 2011 1.4 TSI DSG Passat in February this year. Gave it a new set of wheels, full service and MOT. So far the only things that needed some work was the A/C that somehow lost it's cooling liquid and currently the steering lock module is giving some intermittent warnings of being defective, which the local Bosch service station is busy sourcing the replacement part for. Other than that, we have done some miles in the car already and it really is a very pleasant car to own and drive. Definitely think that you will not be disappointed by this one.

I had one, 1.6tdi, estate, 2012 year - bought for running Scotland to the Midlands regularly - I was never blown away by the economy. It was good, but not as good as I was expecting.
I've run a B7 Passat Alltrack 2.0tdi 177 DSG for the last 4 years, as a family workhorse replacement to a much loved E91 330i manual. Excellent mile muncher and very capable in snow with 4-Motion and all season tyres. Not as bombproof as I'd hoped though. DSG box issues (sorted at £2.5k at VW independant), split EGR pipe, DPF nearing end of life at 100k (due to ash build up rather than being blocked), snapped rear springs, seized rear bushings, electric handbrake sticking. Guess mainly 'wear and tear' but I think my E91 more reliable overall.
How did you guess? 🙂. Whilst DSG box apart they also changed clutch packs and clutch release bearings. This was at 80,000 miles. In my ownership it gets a DSG service (oil and filters) every 50,000 together with Haldex service. Ignore the 'sealed for life' mantra from VW.
@@chrisgell9052 The reliability of the DSG’s, or lack thereof, is something that should be addressed by VW. You’re lucky you don’t have the dry packs in the lesser powered vehicles. A really interesting video. The car was a good buy, clearly, and having had the thorough service and overhaul should be good for many years yet. Looking forward to more videos on this scenario looking at the sort of car that is commonplace on the roads. Nice one Joe!
9:20 I didn't care for his emissions control explanation. EGR does reduce NOx NOx is also made from cold. (More load more NOx) The EGR doesn't cool the exhaust it heats it up, it does generate more soot. Oil doesn't run though the EGR or DPF. It does run on the piston walls which absorbs soot from the gases. Diesel turbos run up to 830°C, they can fail at 850°C
My base 2017 VW Jetta 1.4 is amazing in performance, ergonomics and handling. Hwy/City 41/31 US Gallon (3.7 ltr). Only problem a new a/c evaporator. New quieter Michelins replaced the noisy original wornout Bridgestones, and the style looks showroom new.
Real, relatable and authentic content. I’m enjoying a lot of increasing nostalgic reviews across many channels. It’s almost as if we all know it can never get better than what we had.

On my fourth Passat estate now, a 19 plate 2.0 Tdi with DSG. I'm getting 59 mpg overall and 62 on runs, sometimes hitting 71 mpg if I'm on a hospital drive. I can easily fit 2 road bikes in the back, seats folded and 3 bikes + 4 adults if I remove wheels, drop the boot floor and pack carefully. Great car.
Been driving a 2016 Passat for 3 years now. It is the last of the 2 litre diesels (dont trust the lower capacity turboed up engines). No issues, does 60 mpg routinely, and handles very well. Has 179 hp, and is great at overtaking when needed. A pleasure to drive.
I had a2018 skoda superb 2.0 190 tdi dsg sel executive estate and I was blow away just how brilliant it was on fuel ,this car would regularly return 250 miles to a quarter tank of diesel, economy mode and keeping it around 60 mph on a long run .it was fantastic. I also have access to a 2011 volkswagan passat 1.6 tdi estate and it just eats up the miles .such a shame for all the ulez bollocks that has seen so many of the brilliant cars being sent to the scrap yard years before their time .really looking forward to seeing how this epic trip goes .
If I may be annoyingly pedantic for a moment, Horsham is in West Sussex, not Surrey. The only reason I care is because I live there. Loving these videos. Down to earth and entertaining.
Im on my 5th Passat TDI. Kept my last one 11 and a half years . Advertised it Thursday night, sold it for full asking price on the Saturday (first person to see it) with 200k on it. Awesome motors and frugal with it.
It was very interesting to see this video as I have a 2011 Golf 1.6tdi Bluemotion Technology which I've had since new and found it to be an excellent car. And also interesting to hear you talk about how good tyres make a huge difference to a car's efficiency. 20 years ago I had two identical cars, one fitted with cheap tyres and one fitted with Conti eco contact tyres and the one with eco tyres did 10% better mpg.
I’ve got a 2014 65K one, brilliant car. Drove 500 miles from Plymouth to Glasgow on less than half a tank of diesel @ 75mph. The range was at 1100 miles on the dash.
A friend has a Fabia with the same engine. His is remapped. The fuel economy no doubt outstrips this Passat considerably, it hauls around something like 300kg less mass. He likes to send me photos of his dash MPG calculator after econo-runs. It is usually north of 75MPG.
First time i have seen this channel as i am looking for a cheap Passat or similar, i had no idea he normally did more expensive cars. This was a great video and he picked that up for a song.

Great video. I just watched your challenge. I live in Horsham, which is in west Sussex, not Surrey. Also like the RST Tee shirt. I went to school with Jonny Towers in SA.
I had a 1.6 TDI Ibiza FR on a cheap lease 2013-16 and it was incredible on fuel. Once as a poor graduate I wanted to go home for the weekend (200 mile round trip) and did it on 2.5 gallons so about £14 at the time at an indicated 80mpg! It took a long time at 55mph but even at 70mph 70mpg was possible and even fully loaded going to Le Mans at 90mph three up it did 58mpg.
I had a 2.0 TDi 13 plate Passat, bought it with 20K on it and let it go with about 150K after a few years … I later noticed it had been clocked by 100K miles. Nice car, little uncomfortable for me, little front heavy but quite efficient. I once recorded 70mpg in morning rush hour, on a 2hr cross country drive. I was waiting for the comment in this video about tracking, it was terrible at keeping alignment; I got through more tyres from uneven wear.
My parents have a 2010 Golf TDI Blue Motion with the same 1.6 liter diesel but with a 7 speed DSG which keeps the car running at very low RPMs most of the time, but which in turn very easily clogs up the EGR and DPF a lot, so it's important to do frequent oil changes and use fuel additives every fourth fuel fill-up in order to have the system cleaned efficiently. They average (Norwegian fuel efficiency measurement) 0.53 liters per 10 km which is very good (53 MPG British Imperial)
@@Ash-BRFC It might help, but if the soot is cemented and hard, the EGR might have to be replaced. It doesn't hurt to try, a small bottle of fuel additive is around £10 and should hold for about 60 liters. Wait until you have about 15-20% of your tank left, add the fuel additive, then fill all the way up. That way it mix well. Good luck!
Great video Joe and what a refreshing change to see something so different. Looking at the potential mileage you got from previous diesels and hopefully that will be replicated with this Passat, it’s frustrating that diesels are so demonised now.
I have a technical question about tyre size and mileage. If a car comes out of the factory with 17 inch tyres, is the trip computer/odemeter programmed to calculate the mileage travelled based on the number of rotations of that size wheel? If it is, then doesn't putting smaller tyres (or larger tyres for that matter) mean that the trip computer/odometer will calculate the mileage incorrectly? The corollary to my question is that if the answer is yes, putting smaller tyres on the Passat will mean that it will look like it has travelled a longer distance than it actually has. That would scupper any calculations on how many miles you get out of it on the trip to Africa.
had a 2013 1.6 tdi highline! 1100 miles a tank it was advertised at by VW Lands end to John o groats was achievable! mine was BU13 XXJ lovely metalic navy blue! mine came with 17 inch wheels with runflats on but still had a full size spare in the boot was overkill! now u dont even get a spare!

NOx is also made from cold. (More load more NOx)
The EGR doesn't cool the exhaust it heats it up, it does generate more soot.
Oil doesn't run though the EGR or DPF. It does run on the piston walls which absorbs soot from the gases.
Diesel turbos run up to 830°C, they can fail at 850°C
What a cracking video Joe, loving this mate and can’t wait for the next instalment.
Absolutely love this kind of content! Amazing video mate, as always. Can‘t wait to see more of this journey
Absolutely love this video Joe. Intrigued!!
Great video! Fantastic to see a local company featured, well done to Elite Garages and all of their brilliant team! Best of luck Joe on your adventure 🛞 🚘
I believe the max weight Royal Mail mail parcels is 30kg so those Post Office scales were a great idea ! 👍
As I was saying the other day Joe, even if there are frustrations at times on your side, videos like this keep us on the edge of our seat! Brilliant! 😊Can’t wait to see what happens next! Well done !
Cheers, Tom
my dad owns one, 2.0TDI executive model, very nice comfortable car, pulls well and decent on fuel. Never any major issues
The best diesel challenge is back, excited 👍💪😉
😊😊😊
How many miles on the clock at purchase and cost of servicing etc by Elite please?
On my fourth Passat estate now, a 19 plate 2.0 Tdi with DSG. I'm getting 59 mpg overall and 62 on runs, sometimes hitting 71 mpg if I'm on a hospital drive. I can easily fit 2 road bikes in the back, seats folded and 3 bikes + 4 adults if I remove wheels, drop the boot floor and pack carefully. Great car.
Great video Joe! Such a real world perspective and what a brilliant business to deal with :)
Elite Garage ❤ great service.
Enjoyed the video ❤
Been driving a 2016 Passat for 3 years now. It is the last of the 2 litre diesels (dont trust the lower capacity turboed up engines). No issues, does 60 mpg routinely, and handles very well. Has 179 hp, and is great at overtaking when needed. A pleasure to drive.
Love this upload - variety is important
Haha yes I've been corrected on this a few (hundred) times since posting this, apologies to anyone who lived in Sussex and/or Surrey 🫣
This video is absolute class! Great job
Cool video really interesting. And great to see you doing more variety. 👍👍👍
Im on my 5th Passat TDI. Kept my last one 11 and a half years . Advertised it Thursday night, sold it for full asking price on the Saturday (first person to see it) with 200k on it. Awesome motors and frugal with it.
For the heads up. Horsham is West Sussex not Surrey! Ok close to the border but still really West Sussex 😉
The headlights came out like new!! Good job 👍
Just make sure you do fairly regular longer trips, to prevent the DPF from blocking up. These 1.6's are bar-stewards for it.
more interesting to me than the new stuff you have on the channel!
I’ve got a 2014 65K one, brilliant car. Drove 500 miles from Plymouth to Glasgow on less than half a tank of diesel @ 75mph. The range was at 1100 miles on the dash.
There is nothing quite like a relatable video! Be interesting to see what you have in mind.
Nice video! I like the concept, an affordable car that isn’t a shit box! Be good to see how things progress 👌🏻
Love the video and the format 😊
Great Video Joe and lovley Passat not a VW fan boy really owned one once a Bora great car for most of my time with it 1.9PD TDI great on fuel, but have very fond memories of my dad having a company Passat 1986 GL5 5 cylinder 2.0 Ltr Petrol sounded lovley.
Can't wait to see what adventure your up to in this Passat 👍
Hi Joe we met at Bedford a few years back (Ashgood Porsche) - loving this video idea. Im currently driving electric day to day but want to maybe change an element of my cars to take on a very fuel savy car
Looks very tidy for its age. Cracking motor. Like others, I'm more excited at seeing how this motor performs more than a new model.
England at its best. Nice solid family business, lovely spring/summer weather 👍🏾
Coz no other country has family businesses and good weather 🙄
@@colinmacdougall4301 Calm down dear. I’m not exactly going to ‘praise’ the buses am I?
Hi mate good video, I work there and was the one who noticed you when you were about to leave😂
Wife has a 2018 2.0 TSi petrol. Great car. Only issue we have had is that the paint seems to chip easily.
I used to have a Golf Bluemotion. The economy was brilliant. I did a 'Driving Miss Daisy' run and managed to get 81mpg. It was great on the wallet.
Surely changing wheel size affects the speedometer accuracy?
Nope, the tyres on the 16' have a taller sidewall, their circumference ends up being exactly the same.
Whatever camera you are using sir, i have a feeling im right there with you. Color accuracy is amazing.
VW appear to have sorted the rear tyre wear problem by the B8.
Great video, Joe. What's the mileage of the Passat?
My parents have a 2010 Golf TDI Blue Motion with the same 1.6 liter diesel but with a 7 speed DSG which keeps the car running at very low RPMs most of the time, but which in turn very easily clogs up the EGR and DPF a lot, so it's important to do frequent oil changes and use fuel additives every fourth fuel fill-up in order to have the system cleaned efficiently. They average (Norwegian fuel efficiency measurement) 0.53 liters per 10 km which is very good (53 MPG British Imperial)
Does fue additive help sticky egr valves do you know? 2.0tdi Audi
Good luck!
I have the same car. 1.6 tdi saloon on a 14 plate.
Really good on fuel.
What is the MPG that you get?
Because you had a different sized wheel, did you change your speedo cog. Especially as your speedo was based on the original tyre size.
The tyre circumference is exactly the same.
Great video Joe 🎉
This car looks lovely! I'm tempted to get one!!❤
had a 2013 1.6 tdi highline! 1100 miles a tank it was advertised at by VW Lands end to John o groats was achievable! mine was BU13 XXJ lovely metalic navy blue! mine came with 17 inch wheels with runflats on but still had a full size spare in the boot was overkill! now u dont even get a spare!
