The data science resume that got me my FAANG (MANGA?) job (entry level data scientist)

  • In this video, I go through the resume that got me into FAANG as a data scientist. The resume is the key to getting that interview, which is definitely the hardest part of the entire application process for a data scientist. Our role is super popular but actual positions few and far between. That's why I spent A LOT of time on this resume to get my foot in the door. We're going to go through this line by line and item by item as I go into the details and roast it hard. Sit back and enjoy! :)

    ========================
    Hi, my name is Tina and I'm a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn't know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech :)

      Hi Tina! Awesome content and I think that goes without saying 😄. I just had a request. If you don't mind could you make your resume publicly available? It would help a lot to keep your resume open in a separate tab while I craft my own. Cheers!!

      To be human is to make mistakes. And your own mistakes are sometimes the hardest to catch. You wrote it, you know what's written there and you don't question the validity of what you have written in your own mind. Even if it gets caught during recruitment, at best they'll ask about it but most likely it will simply be put away as a mistake that we all can make.

    Great tips Tina. I especially love how you explain projects in detail on your resume. I also want to add for your viewers that even if you don't get a job right away at one of these companies, don't get discouraged as there are 1000s of companies out there. Sometimes you have to take a step back to move 2 forward. I also created a video where I walk you step by step how to make your resume stand out if you don't have any job experience or don't have the confidence because you didn't go to one of the big (known) schools.

    The issue I have with these types of videos is that it is the elite pedigree and credentialism that is at play here, not how the resume was crafted. The type of background presented here is out of reach for most people.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don't feel it is out of reach if you put your mind to it. I do agree that a lot of it is purely based on her credentials, but as someone with limited work experience, that's often the only thing you have to go on. Although I feel that it could have been a little bit shorter.

    Hi Tina, aspiring Data Scientist here who eventually would like to work in FAANG. I have a Mechanical Engineerig background and I just started my Masters program in Analytics. My question is how much of coding do you have to know for a Data Science interview and just having success in the job as a whole? I have a moderate skillset when it comes to programming in R and Python but I wouldn't say I'm anywhere as good as a Software Engineer.
    Also, I've tried looking at leetcode and most if not all the questions I believe are realted to software engineering. Do you think that's a good site to practice for DS interview questions or am i just wasting my time ?

    • @TinaHuang1

I have a whole series dedicated to doing SQL interview questions. Full transparency - I am an affiliate for them now :)

      Agree with joes comment! I would also add that in industry the most commonly used are SQL and python. I personally think you should choose 1 of python or R because they are quite interchangeable for the most part. Since python has better ml support and is more commonly used in industry I recommend it over R. Hope this helps :)

    Great organized Resume.. What to do with Awards section? any ideas? Do external companies care about previous company performance awards?

    • @TinaHuang1
      @TinaHuang1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm that’s a good question! I would put that under the section with the company with clear explanation on what it is (unless it’s very obvious like employee of the month of something).

      Hi! I just used word. I think simple templates are usually the best because it's easy to parse and can get more information in. If you're entering a more creative field could try latex, which is what I used before. They have some pretty nice templates :)

    5:00 while I agree you should be putting quantifiable info on your resume. Lets be honest unless you are a higher level manager (or in Sales), most people are either completely making up the data (or at the very least only cherry picking a subet of data). Example of a LinkedIn profile I saw recently, Product Owner : Managed multiple cross functional development teams with 100% percent of Software Releases being completed on time/budget. That means nothing, if defects were found after deployment. When I want to get a good chuckle, I will look at LinkedIn profiles of some people I used to work with. The reality is there is no true quantifiable tracking in a lot of positions. Even if you work in a call center where they track (average number of calls, average time spent on the phone), that doesn't measure how effective the rep is actually helping the customer resolve issues. Perhaps the customer just got pissed off and either hung up and called back, or found the answer themselves online, etc.
