@@JeffSu I’m just asking because I have no clue how any thing professional is done. Like idk if there is some specific website where people make their resumes or Microsoft word… I hope by watching your videos I can make a great resume. Also if you don’t mind I have some more personal questions for you.
I have some questions: 1. I’ve been rejected from about 50 interviews. (In the last one they found the excuse that I could have given more examples. There must have been 20 to 30 perfectly given interviews with no feedback at all. The feedback I got from a lot of them is that they went for another candidate). 2. Before the pandemic it only took around 4 interviews to secure a new role 3. I went to a top business school and have half a decade of experience working for blue chip companies 4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years* *Is it discrimination? Is it bias because there is money involved? I would just like to know what is going on as I’m being forced to retire early abroad/take a career break in the summer*..
Jeff, I have a 46-year work history, haven't had to update my resume in over 20 years, and I'm so glad I found your videos. Yours was the first I watched, by the way, saving me a lot of wasted time listening to people who aren't as interesting to listen to. Thanks for the great pointers and for giving me ideas on how I can improve my resume. Wanted to remind you that you're helping not just folks in your own age bracket and younger, but also us old-timers. Cheers!
I love how this guy is talking about sounding professional on paper while sounding so professional and enthusiastic while talking, talking about graphs and metrics while showing graphs and metrics. This man became the embodiment of what he teaches to people. Great video, ill definitely be coming back here and using all the sources on this video when I write my CV/Resume.
The hardest thing in life is getting your first job, I just hate it how everywhere they need experienced engineers. I mean how you can get experience if you can't get into industry in the first place?
Currently reforming my resume, and this is the best tip I've seen so far. Well summarized, easy to listen to and the evidence is clear! Fingers crossed I can adapt these well. Thanks, Jeff!
Greetings, Jeff. I'm not sure if you will still see this, but I wanted to express my gratitude for helping someone like me improve my CV and emphasize key points like X, Y, and Z. Thank you very much!
This is one, if not the best resume videos I’ve ever seen for people who have mastered the basics and need to take it a step farther. Especially as someone with ADHD, the data driven advice was so easy for me to comprehend!
Very to the point. For fresh graduates, would just add that if you don't have work experience, focus on your skillset, degree, language skills, relevant coursework and anything else you developed while at university. Basically, focus on all the things that you already have. Good employers just want to see that you have the attitude and foundational skillset to develop your skills further at their company, not work experience. Thanks for the video!
This was presented with great details 👏 just want to point out 1 thing, if the company is small (let’s say, example of less than 20 employees) and wants to protect workplace culture: The employer/team is either gonna like you, vibe well with you, & feel you’re a “ good fit” or they won’t, based on your personality as well. Consider that along with all the great tips from this video
I found that with my current dream job, whole company is less than 50 and everybody vibes so well, I highly recommend adding on a culture fit, so very needed!
@@DanielUmstead”culture fit”. Is 90% of time veiled discrimination. Fine rejecting ppl if the biz makes outdoor products and the applicant shows no knowledge of or record of outdoor activities/gear.
If you're in a field or in a position where you don't have access to business metrics, you're just at a point where you're encouraged to make up numbers in order to even get your resume seen. The job market is literally in a race to the bottom. Love that for us.
It's a good point. I kind of agree with you there but I have to say literally any job can have real metrics. I give an example where I was just fetching coffee for 2 months in my "5 resume mistakes video" so feel free to reference my exact wording there
THANK YOU! For not hiding your 5 Key Learnings and putting them right up front. I've watched this video multiple times to the end and in parts because I released from the beginning it wasn't going to be a waste of time.

Hi, Jeff! I’m Zoe, a fresh graduate preparing for the application for a job at Google. Many thanks for your tips on the resume. They are well-organized, clearly stated, and presented with details. With your tips and the referral of a google employee, my resume was successfully spotted by the recruiter just one-day after I applied. I just want to comment and say how grateful I am. I'll continue to watch other videos of yours to learn how to pass the interview. Hopefully, I can be a Googler like you.
Since you are a fresh graduate I guess you won't be having much of an work experience. Could you please share what was the major think you focused on instead of an work experience and what kind of cv format you used
Thanks Jeff, your talk on what to consider in a resume has been extremely helpful. I haven't updated my resume in 12 years and so after listening to your you tube talk about what makes a good resume, it has literally changed the way I write and think about what I am offering to match the job I'm looking at. Thanks for the tips, Jeff. If it's no trouble, was wondering if I could ask a few questions. I was a nurse that switched and finished a Computer Systems Technician course just a week ago. 1. Since my work experience is not related to the current jobs I'm applying for, should I do the headings as: skills, education, then job experience? 2. I hear all the time that I have to quantify results on the job experience portion, but I have a hard time relating that to nursing. How would you quantify helping a patient when it is a team effort? 3. I saw a resume guide that added a small blurb at the very top of how a person may be a great fit for the role, but would that not be redundant information from your cover letter? Not sure how people do it, but applying to jobs feels like a very subjective process. I'll read that you can add colours on one guide to stand out, just to read another guide that condemns it for being distracting. Thanks for your time.
I have worked in IT for nearly 20 years and have been a manager at various levels for the last 10. If you're transitioning to IT, definitely put your skills near the top to showcase them. If you have any certifications or specific IT training you've received, list them at the bottom, but mention them in a summary at the top of your resume that gives a brief highlight of who you are and your abilities. A summary and skills section will be the first things an employer sees and your best chance to catch their attention. Beginner level IT positions are very customer service heavy jobs and so is nursing. Highlight those transferable soft skills you've had to use and working in a team is also valued as IT is rarely a solo endeavor. As for colors, 40% of people's favorite color is blue. A few splashes of blue for titles or section headers can give your resume a pleasing structure/appearance that's easier to read as well but other colors tend to be distracting. Hope that helps!
Actually is a subjective experience. and if you forget the formalities you realise all we are trying to do is communicate our work history, and suitability for the job to another human being. granted they use Resume scanners for keywords and such, but you can take those into account for example have a 'skills and competencies' section and this would be a good place to keyword dump. the colour thing is true, it is very subjective. All you need to do is ask yourself, If i had a big day at work and was reading through 40 shortlisted resumes on a Thursday afternoon, would my resume be easy to read? you got to make it easy to read!
This was probably the best resume video I’ve seen and I’m confident these tips will help me step my resume game up from amateur to professional. Wish me luck on my hiring!!
@@JeffSu Thanks Jeff. I'm stoked to use your advice and greatly appreciate it. Once I land the gig I'm definitely joining and purchasing a few subs at that !! Thanks brother
Great tips Jeff. Just to add to your point of measurable metrics - there is a rule followed in the hiring world called the STAR approach (i.e. how you should structure your bullet points) ... Situation, Task, Action, Result. In one paragraph describe the situation, the task that is required in the situation, the action you took and the result (measurable) that you attained. It works like a charm :)
@@mikey7267 Indeed, the STAR approach is suited for the interview, however, it doesn't require a paragraph. I have successfully used it in bullet points that are two lines max in resumes. The important thing is using the elements to give a comprehensive display of one's experience.

Hi there, this is amazing information. I lost my job last year due to the pandemic so I took advantage of the time and completed my undergrad education in May this year. I am now hunting the best ways to learn how of sync my previous job experiences with the marketing degree. Your video has been a great roadmap in making the transition more feasible. Thank you
thank you so much!! This video has helped me clear my writer's block and continue writing my CV. I've just graduated with a Diploma in Web & Graphic design and I'm also applying for entry-level positions so I am interested to watch the magic happen. I will update you when I get the job :)
I don't think you should be copying the job description, but I do agree that you have to match the "buzzwords" used in the posting. I don't think there is an easy way to remove buzzwords completely, especially if you're applying for specialized roles.
My biggest frustration is the summary and education history. I’m a recent university drop out and in a limbo about future careers, but I have an interest in sectors that don’t coincide with my degree. How do I tailor my summary and also account for leaving university early? Loved the video!!
MOST people go into jobs that have nothing to do with their education, other than maybe very specific stems educations. If you look at peoples careers versus what they studied, its not even close. As for leaving early, I'm not sure it will pop up unless you point it out. And if so, you can phrase it as "I left University to pursue career interests, with the intent to return at a later date." Not sure if that helps
Certain jobs will often just look for some kind of college degree/credits. My neighbor in Homeland Security had a dispatch position offered to and accepted by a woman with a bachelor's in _zoology._ She had no other experience in the field. It's not the rule but it's not exactly a fluke either. Just let them know what education you do have and follow John's advice. Best of luck!
Try tailoring this for the job you're applying for. For some jobs you might need to highlight some areas, for other jobs other areas. What you should be trying to do is to match up your experience and skills to what they say they need on the job ad. Any further explanation can be made in the interview stage.
As someone who failed to receive interview calls from Meta, Microsoft, and Google, for internship positions this helps me a lot. My resume was too long. I am lucky to be interning with Amazon but as we know getting an interview call from Amazon is relatively easier hence it was only about interview performance. Thank you for your tips.
Good guide, though I want to point out that any percentages you put on a resume are irrelevant because they are not verifiable. Just like you said, the hiring staff will look through a lot of resumes, and will see a lot of these numbers, they won't mean much once you see a lot. They won't even be about the same thing. Someone will mention sales, another productivity, another number of features, and so they might all be very meaningful, but not comparable. I would rather prefer to see you describe the specific duty you had and any achievements you were known for.
Great input Fabio! I think the point is to show the recruiter/hiring manager you are thinking quantitively and you're thinking about the impact you made for the project as opposed to the specific numbers. I have yet be in an interview where someone was challenged because of their numbers in their resume 😁
Jeff, I'll bet on you. I'm looking for a job right now, so I'll implement all your tips into my job search strategy and let's look what happens. Because you know, you sound logical and compelling and so on. Have a nice one.
This is a great video with fantastic points. However, it really isn't this complicated. I have 20+ years of HR experience, and now have my career coaching business. As a former Recruiter, when I would receive applications and/or resumes, there would be a few things I would look for. Experience, education and/or certs, and salary requirements. I didn't care about your LinkedIn profile, I didn't care how fluffy the words were, and didn't even care how many jobs you had. At the end of the day, if you met 70% of the job requirements, presented yourself professionally and showed some interest in the job and company, I sent your info to the hiring manager. I didn't care how the resume was put together, or what you said in the cover letter. What makes you stand apart from others? Are you respectful and professional in the applicant process, do you follow instructions, do you return my phone call and/or email? It comes down to common sense and believe it or not, common sense is not so common to a lot of folks in the hiring process.
Thanks for sharing your personal experiences Deborah, and I'm sure many of your points are valid! I think Austin looked at the data in aggregate and came up with these findings (for example he didn't say that 100% of people who didn't do this failed), so it's great for reference! Of course, I must agree with your points about following instructions, acting professional, etc.
Jcgurl you make valid points in what you've said. I appreciate this video from a hard data point of view. Having been in multi-faceted, dynamic and diverse roles, it is very easy to lose focus on what is most impactful. It is even more crucial, for example, to tailor your resume for EACH prospective employer, because these roles can often easily translate across different positions- and even different industries. You give incredibly important, post-introduction information that is critical to moving further into the interview and selection processes- but if you cannot attract enough attention from the very beginning, that type of advice is unfortunately meaningless. One of the greatest examples of this is the challenge of proving your worth / value to a prospect without a paper degree, but with years of hands-on experience and growth in the exact same role. The "degreed" candidate wins that first contact every time. To complicate this further, imagine a career for which there are little to no degrees offered that target that role, and for its daily workflow and responsibilities. HR and hiring managers often default to candidates that have related degrees. (I believe HR often takes this route to cover for bad choices- i.e., "well, she HAS a degree!") Can she hit the ground running with only three years' experience in a job with narrow and finite responsibilities? Can he relate to the lowest and highest level stakeholders functionally, professionally, respectfully? I digress. Your points are valid and important, absolutely. I only wanted to point out that the initial impact is the genesis for all that follows, and if you fail there, that's the end of the story.
Ah yes, the human and common sense side of the equation. I can vouch for all of this. Arrive on time, be respectful of their time, say thank you for your time at the end of the appointment, give a firm hand shake, speak well and clearly, make eye contact. . . soft skills guys.

Great video, to the point just the way we all like it. One call out I would like to make is in Udemy report (ebook) Page 15 Top 10 fastest-growing soft skills, some of these skills are a replica of resume cliche or buzzwords. For example innovation, creativity, etc hence the soft skills may be a tough one to balance. I suggest using the job description as a guide and mirroring that as opposed to a generic description.
Thank you for your tips, Jeff! I find them super informative and easy to understand! I am on my way to updating my resume (most familiar as a CV here in Europe), and I am definitely using your advice! Wish you a great year!
Jeff, I subscribed to you after watching your “incredible” cover letter video. You have finally made one for a resume, and this was worth the wait. Thx you!!!!
Good to know that I'm following all of these rules. I'm seeing results too, which surprised me, given that I have absolutely no experience in the field I'm transitioning into.
I agree with previous comments on how well done this video is! You have my gratitude as well! :) Just curious to hear other opinions about CV length though. I personally find 475-600 word resumes to be excessive, and very much prefer single page resumes.
It would fit, but I'm thinking it will be too much. I'm at 347 for mine and I feel that if I add an extra word, it will look cluttered. I used a visually appealing (but not pompous) template, and was mindful of white space, etc. Mystery :)) [Edit: The maximum number of words I could reach in the end is 414 🙃]

4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years*

Cheers!
Woohooo thanks for the kind words!
Woohooo thank you 😁
This is easily the best video on writing a resume. Actual, practical, data-driven suggestions and reasoning. So good! Thanks Jeff
The hardest thing in life is getting your first job, I just hate it how everywhere they need experienced engineers. I mean how you can get experience if you can't get into industry in the first place?

@@JeffSu What is that supposed to mean

Very to the point. For fresh graduates, would just add that if you don't have work experience, focus on your skillset, degree, language skills, relevant coursework and anything else you developed while at university. Basically, focus on all the things that you already have. Good employers just want to see that you have the attitude and foundational skillset to develop your skills further at their company, not work experience. Thanks for the video!
100% Agreed!!!

Thanks for the input! 😁
The STAR approach is for the interview because on a resume, a paragraph per job would take up too much space.
@@mikey7267 Indeed, the STAR approach is suited for the interview, however, it doesn't require a paragraph. I have successfully used it in bullet points that are two lines max in resumes. The important thing is using the elements to give a comprehensive display of one's experience.

Still confused with keywords. You cannot pass ATS unless you’re almost copying the whole job description.
I don't think you should be copying the job description, but I do agree that you have to match the "buzzwords" used in the posting. I don't think there is an easy way to remove buzzwords completely, especially if you're applying for specialized roles.
A great effort was put in the making of this video. Thanks, Jeff.

@@johnspence8141 it helps
Certain jobs will often just look for some kind of college degree/credits. My neighbor in Homeland Security had a dispatch position offered to and accepted by a woman with a bachelor's in _zoology._ She had no other experience in the field.
It's not the rule but it's not exactly a fluke either. Just let them know what education you do have and follow John's advice.
Best of luck!
How did your search go?! :)
Best of luck Praveen!!
So much pressure 😅, but best of luck!!
Absolutely great advice thank you. At 61, I need every edge up I can get.

This is my first time on your channel and you know what? This is the best tips and channel related to résumé that I've come across so far! You really has put a lot of research and efforts into making this video. Thank you so much. I've subscribed and you deserve more subscribers! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

That's a great clarification, thank you for your input my friend 😁
Thank you for your tips, Jeff! I find them super informative and easy to understand! I am on my way to updating my resume (most familiar as a CV here in Europe), and I am definitely using your advice! Wish you a great year!
Best of luck! Let me know how it goes 😁
Jeff, I subscribed to you after watching your “incredible” cover letter video. You have finally made one for a resume, and this was worth the wait. Thx you!!!!
Same!
Wow thanks Livia, now that you have a "double threat" I hope it helps with the job search!
Great minds think alike I guess 😉
What happened to the cover letter video anyway?
@@kylestamina7233 I'm coming up with an updated (2021) one and didn't want to confuse my viewers!
Thank you so much for the videos you put out there! They have helped me so much and I am really grateful. Keep doing your thing and helping others❤🙏🏽
With awesome viewers like you around Angel, I will for sure 😁
The video is one that will change your life. HUGE THANKS, JEFF!
You're very welcome my friend!! 😁
Good to know that I'm following all of these rules. I'm seeing results too, which surprised me, given that I have absolutely no experience in the field I'm transitioning into.
That's awesome!!! Let me know how it goes Sayak!

Your content is so spot on. Thank you for your energy, insight and data geekiness. It has been tremendously invaluable.
Glad to hear it Haddie! 😁
I agree with previous comments on how well done this video is! You have my gratitude as well! :)
Just curious to hear other opinions about CV length though.
I personally find 475-600 word resumes to be excessive, and very much prefer single page resumes.
Thanks so much for the kind words! So I think depending on the formatting and spacing, 500 words should fit on a single page!
It would fit, but I'm thinking it will be too much.
I'm at 347 for mine and I feel that if I add an extra word, it will look cluttered. I used a visually appealing (but not pompous) template, and was mindful of white space, etc.
Mystery :))
[Edit: The maximum number of words I could reach in the end is 414 🙃]
I wasn't expecting this to be as helpful as it was - thank you!
No problem 😁
I love the attention to figures and the professionalism of the video. Great work and super helpful.🤗
Glad to hear it! 😁
