Good analysis. I am working my way through the Google certificate because (ironically, even though Google offers more career development options) my goal isn't to become a data analyst. I'm just trying to fill in some holes in my knowledge/skill set so that I can do better at my current job, and my current company uses Tableau and BigQuery as the main tools in its data ecosystem. And, in a less directly job-related detail, I already know some basics of Python, but I've never worked with R, so I'm curious about it.

I am already a data analyst who uses Python regularly planning on going with Google. I have a few reasons. The biggest is I already know a lot of Python and good R resources are nowhere near as robust as Python, so getting R from Google sounds like a good idea. Second, Google's tools are more cloud-focused. Even if the tools are almost identical to, say, desktop applications, I think being conversant in tech that is based in the cloud is more relevant to today's (and tomorrow's) world. Third, name recognition--and I don't mean Google. BigQuery and Tableau, in my experience, are listed more frequently than their counterparts in the IBM class on job applications. If you pay the same for both classes, at the end of the day, your resume is going to have overlap with more job postings in this field if you have Google's tech stack over IBM's.

I enrolled myself in the IBM course and I am on course 6. The Excel explanation was really good and I could learn from it. But Python and SQL are not well-explained. I know SQL well and hence could follow with it. The same goes with Python since I know logic mostly. But if you're a beginner, then do not go for this course. It is a slideshow with a voice speaking constantly. There is hardly any logical explanation in it.
This course also provides external labs to write your codes in and practice. In the beginning, everything worked fine but the skill labs are not working anymore. Since my validity ends tomorrow, I guess I will not be able to use it.
However, if you are an experienced person, then you can go for this course for a revision. I learned everything through youtube before heading for this course and that is why I could keep up with it. Python is not something that I am satisfied with.
I bought it only for Python but now I do not understand it in the course and will return back to TH-cam to continue it. I would rate it 2.5/5. I do not even want to complete it because I have no idea what the voice speaks. Terrible explanation.

It all comes down to the battle of the giants when it comes to visualization and languages. Google is moving hard into analytics, however, Power BI wins over Tableau when it comes to visualizing data. Also, a key factor is the language and in that battlefield definitely Python wins over R.
The same goes for sheets and Excel as most companies are using MS products that are already incorporated into 365. Why switch from Excel to Gsheets?
Career development is a great to have guide, but it must not be the focus of a technical certification. Great as an additional knowledge, however, it may be a same fit for all approach. So, at the end of the day it’s up to each person to work on finding opportunities.
All in all, IBM provides insights into using tools that are more relevant for analytics and that will truly give an edge to finding job opportunities.

Those are all very basic courses though. You can do them for the cert, it's free if you do it in 7 days. But then you need to learn advanced SQL and practice Tableau. That should be enough to land you an entry level job but if you want to learn Python, you should also take a more in depth course. The information from the IBM course won't be enough to pass a technical interview.

I'm almost done with the IBM Data Science Certificate. Amazingly structured, goes into some deep-detailed Python & SQL/Db2 programming. The Watson Studio is awesome, when it comes to integrating with Notebooks, Github and data sources. So for the core skills, I would suggest the IBM one. Next, I'm thinking going for the IBM Data Engineering certificate, which goes into much more technical details on SQL. Some courses are common with the Data Science one, so it would take a relatively sort amount of time to complete once done with the first one.

Thanks Tina. I breezed through the first 3 courses in this certificate and felt super confident I could nail this in a couple of months time. I must admit it got super hard from course 4 - Python for Data Science, AI & Development. The learning curve is exponential. Each of those 7-15 min videos took me 4-5 hours to complete with contact pauses-plays. The Python in this course is definitely not for beginners. I completed the 4th course just for the sake of it but I don't believe I have mastered any of the skills. Maybe I'm not cut out for this program and should start from ground zero like CompTia ITF+ or Google IT Support or Google Data Analytics. But data analysis/science is something I would wish to pursue

I’m at the start of the Google course and I think they are MAJORLY passing the time-to-complete. The video sections obviously have accurate times, but there are readings that are just two paragraphs of fairly straightforward information, marked as 10 or 20 minutes to complete. It’s wild that a written text that’s the same length as the 4-minute video transcript is being filled or quadrupled. Maybe this is only the case in the first (foundations) course, but it seems really disingenuous to prospective employers to have us market ourselves on a “290-hour certificate” that is maybe only half of that. I’m sticking with it because this is an additional skill set I want to potentially be able to work outside the US one day, otherwise I’d have dropped it.
