Restoring a broken & worn out teak chair : trash to treasure
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ก.ย. 2024
- This chair is UN-sittable (technical term, haha). It has loose joinery, breaks and cracks, the wood is incredibly weathered from years of neglect, and is filthy. I don't work on chairs very often, but couldn't resist these. It's not apparent immediately, given the state they are in, but these chairs are made of a lovely and valuable wood.

I love your channel and also AT restoration. Happy to see these videos
Angie, I actually got the type of wood correct! I could not believe it since I know nothing about wood types. Your hints were helpful and I was wracking my brain. As you continued sanding it finally hit me, it reminded me of a round teak dining room set my parents had back in the 1970's which I really loved. I surprise myself sometimes. 😂
A jaw-dropping competition. I'm glad it's a friendly one, because it sure was like comparing apples, oranges, pears and mangoes...No way could I choose one; they were all so different and showcased amazing skills: your loving nurture of the wood's character and qualities (and your understated mentoring skills for all of us!); then the wood turning!; then the caning!; then the gilding and upholstery! What a cornucopia of fabulous videos! (I'm afraid it's a wash on my part, since I "liked" them all!
Thanks for the great job on the chairs project! Really appreciate the hand work and sound bites. Are you in Canada?
Even if you don't win the competition, you win the award for best staging.
I’m surprised how well the canvas came out. It was so faded in the beginning. As always, it’s your attention to detail that impresses me so much. Meticulously making that wooden piece to fit two parts together in the same manner as they originally were; removing the glue around the entire joint even though most of it wouldn’t even be noticed; covering up any white spots. Anyone who purchases a piece from you, gets furniture that is as close to perfect as can be done! I’m ready for the next video in the challenge
The love she puts into every piece. 💙
You picked a much nicer chair design than the other three guys.
This was extremely satisfying to watch, with great results.
Excellent choice of music too. I hope you win, Angie!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your kind words! 😊
This chair was sad and broken, but in its revived state, no one would ever know. Exceptional restoration, and I especially love that you filmed the reveal outside, with you in it, watching a river go by. Beautiful. I also love your peaceful spirit, and your music. I Shazam all of the music in your videos and save it to a playlist! Your content always brings peace...an appreciated benefit. Thanks, Angie.
You're so welcome! Neat idea on the Shazaming! (I doubt that's a word lol)
I agree. Especially the wonderful peaceful vibe and Angie by the stream.
🤗🤝 Her work is impeccable.
👏👏👏🥂
All repairs were great to watch, but the ladies certainly had a softer touch.
Love this! You should be so honored to be invited to friendly competition with the rest of this group! Wow! Great restoration! Love the ending. ❤
I love it. Can't wait to do the matching one!
I beg to differ, the others should be honored to be allowed to compete with Angie!
Displaying the chair in the natural beauty of NS - genius!
It just made instant sense to me! :-) Plus, I got an incredible little nature break that afternoon. ❤️
Sometimes simpler is better. You have just as much chance at winning bragging rights as the other competitors. As always, love your work.
Thank you so much! ☺️
Your work is beautiful, Angie. At another time, I would give you a thumbs up and a celebratory comment as well. But sadly RT gets my vote today. You did a magnificent job on restoring these Teak Chairs, even though you don't usually do chairs. This friendly competition reminds me of a comp I entered to WIN a knitting machine back in 1972! It took me 2 weeks, but I knitted a christening robe in 2ply pure wool. It was nearly a metre long, knitted with needles as thick as a tooth pick and covered all over with the finest, complex lace pattern !! The woman who 'won' the knitting machine had knitted a men's Worsted weight (thick wool) twin set on her knitting machine which took her 3 hours to work! Go figure!? I wanted to give you a thumbs up, but Arti won my vote today 😉😘
I bet that was frustrating, since she already had a knitting machine and used it to get a free one.
Perhaps she gave her older one to someone and kept the new one.
Or she was just a very competitive person.
Hope you were able to get your own knitting machine at some point since that time.
I’m sure the christening robe you made by hand was beautiful 😍🙏
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Is there anything you can't restore....your work is perfect, down to the tiniest detail...I get an education every single time I tune in
Awe, thank you so much! 😊
Love that these chairs will now bring many more years of fun.
Thank you very much! 😊
Well done Angie! I recently restored a teak bench and it was so satisfying to see the warm wood shining through. Thanks for bringing us along!
You're so welcome! Thank you for joining me! 🙂
Love, Love, Love both you and Trena. Your transformation was amazing.
Thank you!
I broke the rules and voted for 2 channels. This competition was really about comparing apples to oranges to bananas to pears. All channels have excellent content. But AT restoration and John's Furniture were on another level and I couldn't choose between them. I am a huge fan of Transcend Furniture,, Angie regularly turns dross into gold. And she is a solid craftsperson when it comes to repairing damage, but not on the same level as the other three. She has a different business model and works on a different type of furniture. John's Furniture: Wow. The whole package. Trained from youth by an expert. She wove a chair back and bottom! AT Restoration: I have come across this channel before. Haven't really followed it because it's a type of furniture and restoration that you just don't see much in North America. And what he does is so complex! Amazing restoration. Like John's, such a high skill level. Finally, Fixing Furniture. You can learn so much about repairing joinery on this channel. The most informative video in the competition, but probably suffered in the judging because the finish was left for the customer to do so the end result wasn't "pretty". Both Fixing Furniture and Transcend Furniture Gallery are great teaching channels for people with ordinary skills and shops. John's and AT's show what seasoned professionals can do. Long story short, I am so glad they had this competition. I was under the weather today, so watched all 4 videos back to back. Great content!
Excellent work as always, Angie! Thanks for joining in the competition.
You're so welcome! Enjoy!
Sometimes when I’m out in the forest i come across chairs or benches. Clearly placed there by a private person. A beautiful hidden gem of a place. A view, a stream or something else that makes that place special. I love those places, so obviously someone’s favourite. The reveal reminded me so much of those chairs 🥰 and I can really see your chair as one of those, enhancing the experience of beautiful nature with a beautifully restored chair 💕💕
Thank you so much for watching!! I'm so glad you like how it turned out. 😀
That chair deserves pride of place at any dining table along with its partner on the other side. Congratulations, beautiful work.
Thanks so much! 😊 We're going to use them in our garden.
I was super impressed by Trena's Frankenchair restoration because ... hand-caning OMG! BUT YOU GET MY VOTE FOR BEING MOST INFORMATIVE. Seriously, the golden chair was lovely but there was almost no basic information (granted, because only someone really skilled should even dream of doing this gilding restoration) ... I just really enjoy watching and listening to you.
AT restoration doesn’t talk through his videos as he is Estonian and probably not an English speaker
Thank you so much Susan! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
What a great thing to see you with such quality colleagues in this competition. You are in the right company.
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
OMG. This chair is perfect. You did a great job on it, and the reveal scene was spectacular. Wow!!!!❤❤❤
I'm so glad you like it!! ☺️
The wood is beautiful! That's the wonder of Teak! Maybe you can finish the other one and have chairs for your own porch-sitting!
That's the plan - they'll be in our garden. 😊
This is yet again a testament to your expertise, imagination, and character-that you were willing to try, to learn, to share, and to enjoy the benefit of the experience. I have a couple of teak rockers on my back deck that have broken slats: I might even attempt to refurbish them at some point, who knows? Thank you for all you do!
Wow, thank you! Yeah, this is NOT my wheelhouse at all, but still fun to join in. :-)
The chair looks brand new! Beautiful!
And this is why I watch your channel the most: I dutifully watched (fastforwarded) through all the videos, but I realise that I really don't care about chairs. But very useful video, since that is probably the type of chair that the largest number of people need restoration on: Weathered outdoor chairs.
It's definitely a common problem, especially around here. We have four very distinct and extreme seasons.
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Same here in Denmark. Well, having coastal climate evens it out a bit. But then it rains and rains and rains.
You have the purest heart, and your voice and whole vibe is so relaxing. It really helps after a long day of caring for my 83 year old mother who has dementia ❤
Oh I am so happy to be able to help you relax. Thank you so much for watching and my thoughts are with you. ❤️
Love this restoration. Teak is always a favorite!
Thank you so much! 😊
She's a beaut, Angie!
I love what you did with these chairs! So happy you nailed the label symmetrically! I also follow the other challenge participants but my vote is definitely yours! Thanks so much for sharing
You're so welcome! Thank YOU so much for watching! 🙂
The reveal of the chair in the wild was awesome!
I'm so glad you liked it! 😊
Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
Outstanding, as usual! I love your attention to details like picking out the dust and trimming the glue. ❤
Thank you :-)
Just watching you sit outside by the river. And that gorgeous chair reminded me of some old actor sitting in a beautiful chair by the river
Only about five minutes in, but I'll take a guess on what kind of wood... Teak? You mentioned the wood was often used on ships, and that's the only one I could think of. Again, you've made magic with wood. Also, it's a testament to the camaraderie of the woodworking community in general, and the community you are building on your channel in particular that people are reaching out to you to participate in these friendly competitions. I chalk that up to more of your magic at work.
Nailed it. 😉 Thank you so much for your continued support and kind words. ❤️
Against a background of white birch; lovely.
6:16 in 40 years of fix-it type carpentry, I have NEVER thought of using a wadded up rag for clamping a difficult piece. I’m pretty sure you didn’t invent this method, but you are the first person I’ve ever seen do it. I’m sure it’s not in Moxon … or even Johnson or Underhill. Thank you!
You're welcome! ☺️
Oh wow! I was thinking how nice it was looking as you were going along but the closing of this video just blew me away. The process was well done and having it in it's element just made it glow! Awesome
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Such a beautiful chair, and the setting you picked for staging really showed it off for how it is meant to be used! ❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you like it! 😁
Angie, love how meticulous you are in your furniture restorations. As usual, another beautifully restored piece to be enjoyed!!
Thank you so much! 😊
They are all wonderfully done but for me hands down you are the best, GREAT JOB and I am glad I found you through this competition.
Angie, you’re already a winner to be working in the company of Ahti, Trena and Scott! Beautiful result❣️ I’m an avid watcher of your competitors, but I’ve also watched every one of your videos too - from the beginning! I love this group of restorers because none of you paint unless you have to; I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ahti paint anything…😂 (He also has the coolest tools…lol). But YOU, my friend, have the best music (and cats)!!! I’m the one who mentions the music. Love me some blues. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much!! 😊
Loved your “confession” at the start of the video. I loved the chair you chose. It showed a person with an entry level skill set could follow along with yours and feel accomplished with something. Thank you.
You're so welcome!
Its a really close competition.Your repairs and restoration are. second to none. Good luck..
Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Angie making good use of what Jerry Rosa refers to as the high dollar glue spreader.
Beautiful result! And what a treat for us to see all our favourite restoration people posting at once. Upvote for all of you from me. Thanks, Angie!
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I think you are the most genuine and close to regular people who do wood working as a hobby; great work, and thank you for
Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
Hey, it is much like an IKEA chair, but I like the modern and functional design that allows for selfmade repair. This really shows that not everything broken must be scraped. Thx.
Glad you like it!
You definitely breathed new life into that chair! Beautiful job!!!
Thank you so much!
Good stuff, obviously I’m voting for you 😉
hahahahaha LIES. ;-) Just kidding- thanks for watching, Jay :-)
Oh how I’d love to a thermos of tea and some snacks, sit in that spot in THAT chair and savor the scenery. Gorgeous work as always!
It was *literally* a breath of fresh air after a busy week!
I cheated and voted for all four of you. You’re all winners in my book! Great job!
Please take this as a compliment. The talent in this competition is overwhelming, a master upholsterer, a hand weaving cane replacer, and a woodworker with a full shop of tools. What you all have in common is your all work with wood finishes. Your ability to turn back time on the weathered teak is your best talent, and you ROCK
Revealing outdoor furniture was natural, and the setting was beautiful
Thank you James! I’m copying and pasting my reply as I just wrote on another comment addressing this very thing, and my response to your comment woukd have been nearly identical. :-)
I have to agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of all this. I’m used to doing collabs/competitions with other channels which is enjoyable for both myself and the viewers because it opens the viewers up to other channels, styles of editing etc.
Typically there isn’t voting though, the winner is usually chosen by the host of the collab. It makes for a more even playing field for those exact reasons you mention.
I was a late addition to this competition, and even mentioned that I don’t really do chairs because finding incredible ones worthy of a challenge like this just isn’t that common here, but opted to do it for the spirit of cross promoting each others work.
It’s been quite interesting so far, particularly with how different our video styles are. To me personally, I was thinking it was more of a friendly collab than a cutthroat competition (so to speak), haha.
Because you’re correct. You can’t really compare these videos fairly as they are all just entirely different. There have been SOOO many people that don’t really understand mine in particular, and how “simplistic” it appears next to an ancient chair covered in gold! But it was all I was able to get my hands on in the limited time I had
Ahti is a master and always brings an immaculate end result that on many levels isn’t really touchable, because it’s so unique what he does. It’s also complicated comparing a more ASMR channel to three teaching channels as people are very passionate about whether a video has voiceover or not. I’ve seen dozens of people complaining about our three channels as “chatty”, not understanding that explaining our processes is really what our channels are based on.
Trena is an absolute wealth of generational restoration information, and Scott is one of the best teachers I’ve seen, able to break down and explain even the most complex repairs.
Anyway.. that’s my long winded “chatty” (lol) way of saying thank you for watching, and recognizing that this collaborative effort, while fun and supportive to each other as TH-camrs, isn’t really apples to apples, but I’m hoping people still enjoyed the experience anyway. ❤️
Teak wood.
Wonderful restoration.. again Angie you are a master of restoration and repurposing.
Thank you very much!! 😀
You took this broken down chair and transformed it into a beautiful piece! Turned out really good! 😊❤
Thank you! 😊
Never thought I'd say beautiful about an outdoor chair but I am❤
I'm voting for yours because it's the kind of project a random person could do in their garage with no special tools (with the exception of the tenon). It would take a long time and it wouldn't be to your level of quality, but this is the kind of thing people used to do instead of throwing furniture away.
Thank you so much for watching!! 😊
I am so excited to see all 4 of you doing a friendly competition. I watch you all. Its gonna be hard to choose. Your chair is beautiful. Teakwood is so pretty.😊 Have a great weekend
Thank you so much!
That chair is beautiful. I can’t wait to see the pair together.
I'm so glad you like how it turned out! Thank you very much!
Beautiful outcome on one beat up piece of furniture!
Angie, this is excellent work. A very honorable competitor for the challenge. Thanks so much for participating. But I must confess I gave likes to all.
You can do it! I liked the other three as well! haha Everyone brought something different to the table, and I love that.
Using a wad of stuff to clamp an uneven surface is fantastic. Thank you for sharing that.
You're welcome! ☺️
Nice touch--you actually sitting in the chair!
Watched all the competition videos and I just cannot believe the talent, the care, the love and the vision you all have! Love the chair and your videos.
You know the people that bought them must have loved them to hold on to them and after you applied your magic to them you can see why they did. Fantastic!!!!!
Beautiful as always!
Thank you so much! 😊
Very nice, Angie. That chair looks great. I can’t believe that the canvas is still intact! 🩵
I'm so glad you like it! 😊
I refinished all my teak outdoor furniture this year because watching your channel gave me the confidence to do so! I was so glad to see this video because I did it right! Not as well as you, but I did the steps!
That is awesome! 😊 Good job!!
Wonderful work Angie! The chair turned out awesome! I love that you straightened the name plate... I chuckled at your comment on that... and I agree! Great videography as well.
Thank you so much! 😊
I'm so so excited to see my favorite people doing a contest! Go Angie... but Ahti had my heart too. LOL
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
A beautifully restored chair. Thanks for the explanation about the calcium deposits. Now for the remaining videos.
You're very welcome! Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Ohhh, your outro/reveal. I'm a New Englander now living in Texas, and that felt so much like home.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Beautiful work once again. Brilliant reveal!!
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful work restoring this chair, and the spot you picked for the reveal was gorgeous, too! Couldn't have picked a better spot, and I hope the other chair is a breeze so you and your lady love can sit and enjoy warmer weather together!
Thank you very much! ☺️
Angie, I love your channel and Ahti's, and have seen all the episodes twice. I appreciate your playful attitude toward furniture and Ahti's goofy intros and his traditional restoration. I have learned so much from both of you. Your chair looks as good as new. Well done.
Thank you so much! 😊
Beautiful! I really loved seeing you taking a seat too 😊
Beautiful job, as always. 👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you very much! 🙂
So cool how you restored this teak outdoor chair! Even the canvas came out clean. And I liked that little touch of straightening up the brass plate when you reattached it to chair. Beautiful teak.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Great job on the chair. I loved the reveal. I felt it deserved a little road trip and a beautiful setting to show off it’s new finish 😀
I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Great job Angie, all you need now are some restored fishing rod's and you can use that lovely outside chair . 😀😀😸😸🐰🐰👍👍.
Always love your work. I know you’re not a chair person but I love the simplicity. As a European I love this style the most. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! 😊
Wow! It came out like new! Excellent job Angie!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it! 🙂
Your meticulous attention to detail is extremely impressive. Congratulations on a superb job.
Thank you so much 😀
I love the end result, Angie.
Great job!
Thank you so much Joy!
Late to the watch of the chair challenge. All of my favorite channels in it. The chair turned out so beautiful! Thank you for sharing how you gave it a new life.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
What a handsome chair!
Yes ma'am! Looks brand-spankin' new!❤
Thank you kindly! 😀
So lovely & Thank you for placing the reveal in your beautiful wilderness. Nice touch🌞Susie
You're very welcome, I'm glad you liked it! 😊
Love the Results
Thank you! 😊
I think you turned this from a Beast to a Beauty. ❤️
Thank you so much!
Watched the other three videos. They are all working for a client and you are simply saving furniture. I Love Your dedication to saving sad pieces of furniture.
Thank you very much! 😀
Even the canvas came out nicely. Obviously a quality outdoor product. A really good looking result.
Good luck in the completion - 2 more for me to watch now.
It's my birthday, so I feel no guilt in doing nothing and binge-watching it all !
Oh! Happy birthday! :-)
Best reveal EVER!!
😂👍💪🤩😍
Love everything you do, even showing yourself sitting at the stream ! LOL
One day when you are bored, finish the other chair and when next summer comes, sit on the balcony, garden, or veranda to share a nice moment with a loved one. I came here because of the challenge, and I really liked getting to know your work.
Thank you! And that’s definitely the plan. We are thinking of keeping these ones. :-)
wow, you may not know much about restoring chairs... but you can't tell with this one! It's beautiful! I love that you used the original canvas, too! That deep teak color, just gorgeous! Simple project? Maybe, but there is nothing simple about the work you do... your attention to detail is outstanding!
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate the support! 🙂
The chairs aren't fancy but they look great. You have given the new ife and they're ready for many more years of enjoying the outdoors.
You made something that looked like firewood into a beautiful useable chair. Awesome ❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely to watch and I loved the way you said the others will blow you clean out of the sea, but then again you said you don't specialise in chairs. After having watching all 4 vids I have to say AT restorations is going to take a hell of a lot to beat, well done anyway and best of luck.👍
First, know that i LOVE the work you do. Second, I absolutely LOOOVE TRENA! I learn so much from you BOTH! I'm so excited that you guys have a community & are friends! That makes my heart happy! 😃❤🥰
You're inspiring in all the work you do and I'm blessed by learning from your examples. A BIG THANK YOU for sharing. I know you don't HAVE to do it so please know your viewers are grateful.
I need to check out the gentleman you mentioned! 😁🤓👍 I nerd out watching. Lol! And it's something that I want to start doing because if I didn't have to depend on my income, THIS is what I would be doing! 💯🎯🥰❤️
Sending my Thank You's, warm hugs & wishing you ALL a Happy New Year! 🥳🎉🥂❤
Thank you so much for this great comment, I'm so glad you're enjoying my content! Happy New Year to you as well and all the best for 2024. 😀
Nice job. I'm a fan of AT Restoration as well. You both have a lot to offer for different reasons. Seeing my favourites connected through a friendly competition was a pleasant surprise.
Thank you Richard! Yes, all four of us have very different styles but it’s still fun to come together in this way. :-)
I hope you’re keeping these chairs for your own garden. Beautiful restoration.
We are indeed. 😀
