I’m not sure if this is normal, but lately, I’ve been watching awesome quality content from channels with less than 1000 subscribers. These new channels seem to have much, much better content than the popular ones. This is a great example.

13 years old and still better than a dang iPhone. I tell budget filmmakers all the time that there are excellent DSLR’s for CHEAP that give you MUCH more creative control, low light performance, and of course being able to use actual lenses than using a phone. This is a great example.

I couldn't even make it half way through without subscribing. Lots of funny moments, amazing production value and it was relatively short. All big plusses for me.
For my journey with photography, I find that the tools that you use are important, but the skill to use them is even more important. You demonstrated this very well by using entry level gear and creating interesting and engaging content. I am a tool collector because I like to be well equipped and I enjoy the different flairs that different tools can throw into mix.
The only two cameras that I bought new was Canon EOS XTi and the Canon EOS 40D. I have bought only used gear ever since then (like 2008). I discovered very quickly that good quality glass makes a pretty big difference. My first L lens was a 24-105mm, and while it's one of the least regarded L lenses, it was my most influential lens.
I was blessed back then to pick up a used 1D Mark III for ultra cheap, and it was this combination that rocketed me to a world that amplified how I felt holding a camera, creating art with a camera, and putting in work with a camera. How a camera makes you feel, how it inspires you to create, is pretty important for me.
The 1D series always felt right in my hands, the controls were easy to use and I didn't worry about harming the camera itself. I currently have a 1Ds Mark III and a 1DX Mark II for my Pro bodies and still love how the camera feels like it's part of me.
I have other, newer, more capable bodies, but they are smaller in form factor and don't give me that excitement. I have a surgically precise 24mp Sony that creates absolutely stunning photos, but the joy of using my 1Ds just can't be matched. The Sony has better DR, Less noise, better AF, IBIS, more MP's, more built in creative tools, Video, and on and on, but the 1Ds can't be matched for that joy of use. My 1Dx II however is better than the Sony in many respects. :P
I'm going down a crazy rabbit hole here now. Long story short, thanks for the awesome video this morning. ^_^

I wanted to watch the whole thing before commenting because I wasn’t sure if you were going to say it but you did. It 100% does matter just not in the ways you expect it to. I shot on a t3i in my freshman film class and the camera worked great but boy was it a pain in the ass. And it was still fairly new then. I’ve had a canon m50 since release and it’s great but I never wanted to use it. You have to find grease that inspires you and gets out of your way if you want the end result to be your best work but you can’t just use gear as an excuse to not create. There’s gotta be a balance

In my opinion, it does. I recently bought an old Olympus compact and I've had more fun with that little camera than I've had with my Canon DSLR in months, I've also been shooting way more and getting better results with less attempts. It's not so much about the image quality of the thing but more about having a good user experience, an old premium camera will give you a better experience than a new budget one and that's very important.

I still use a Canon T3i for photography(can't afford a full frame right now) but I have never really messed with it too much for video. I also have a Canon T5 that I recently used for filming the CSX Santa Train, but I rarely use it for filming, too. I guess it was like, okay, let's see what this camera can do film-wise. The issue I had was that it kept stopping during filming, as the T3i doesn't. I am guessing it must be the card I am using in the T5.

As I'm watching Get Back, I'm seeing Ethan Russell, a professional photographer, use a Nikkormat FT. Nikkormat was a consumer grade camera, an affordable alternative to the Nikon SLRs of the time. To see him take photos on a Beginner camera tells me you don't need good gear to take great photos. I personally shoot some photos on a Canon EOS D30. The first fucking Canon DSLR.

The T3i really surprised me and was a lot of fun to use. The two biggest limitations were low light and I had a tough time with pulling focus on the monitor. Anything higher than 800 ISO the image became very noisey. Other than that, it was great! I certainly recommend the camera, especially with how affordable it is and how many lenses are available for it on the used market.

Ofcourse not. But with my Nikon 10.5mm fisheye 😅 it kinda does matter what I shoot on. The fact I have to fix distortion in every image means I need at least 20mp to have a good starting point. But I take multiple shots to stitch together so I can get away with an older camera, as long as it doesn't break anytime soon. My old DSLR has no video.
But nice video. Storytelling does matter. Yes equipment matters if they fit your end goal.

In photography the camera body is actually 100% the least important part. But in filmmaking it's much more important. Even though you can create something really good with a cheap bottom of the barrel camera, you still need lights, a location, a story and shit - but ultimately 1080p25 from a 2011 DSLR doesn't look very nice nowadays when every youtuber and their mother shoots the newest sony mirrorless with some $3K prime

like someone would make a 30 min video using a canon m50 or an iphone 15 for photography, but at some point they will have to mention how much better thier 8 trillion dollar Leica in the video making the whole thing a waist of time destriying thier point
like no crap bro an iphone isnt gonna beat your circle jerkky expensive Sony super duper secret squirrel camera i thought the point of the video was to prove to budding poor photographers that you don't need that stuff" just make a separate video showing your friends you are in the cool kids club.
BY THE way this video is AWESOME

Yeah. The camera doesn't matter... So why do people who use equipment costing several thousand or several thousand dollars say such things? So far, I used a camera from 2009 that was not even mid-range - Panasonic Lumix FZ38, I could "take a photo" there, but when I changed my phone a few years ago to an older one (and even at the time of purchase, even though it was bought at the premiere, it was rather a mid-range phone) xiaomi redmi note 8 pro, even in auto mode it took nicer photos (i.e. better quality) right away... Some time ago I received a damaged Panasonic Lumix tz80, because the previous user wanted to throw it away, it had a damaged zoom, the battery cover and HDMI were torn off, it was all beat up, and overall it looked 2/10. I repaired the zoom, bought the above-mentioned flip-flops, put it together, and it turned out that in some cases when taking photos, you can see black "elements" in the photo... And when I was happy that I would have a decent camera, it turned out that the person who gave it to me , now she wants it back, she gave me the money for the parts I found (I was looking for several days, original parts, not replacements), in the meantime I lost the Panasonic Lumix FZ38 mentioned at the beginning... And I will soon be left with by phone. Well, someone who has equipment worth a lot of money says that "the equipment doesn't matter". Yeah, sure. When taking photos with an old phone, even after switching to a damaged Lumix tz80, I saw the difference. I felt super excited and happy. I felt a big difference in the comfort of taking photos, the optical zoom itself turned out to be a great thing. As they say, "the point of view depends on the seat." If I had a better camera with interchangeable lenses (and I'm not talking about equipment costing about $2,000, but cheaper), something could be done. Unfortunately, life is what it is. In my case, photography is just a hobby that I unfortunately cannot afford. :) And those who keep saying that "it doesn't matter what you take photos with", I'd be happy to trade with them.

Nikon d3200 or canon 60d(god awful in less than a CLOUDY Sun amount of light?) with kit lenses do the trick, here they cost $50-80 and $80-150 respectively. Participated in a HS-oriented master-class about shooting an AD. Used Canon 80d, 2 LC500r Godox light sticks, afaik there are off-brand ones for $30-50. Were shooting indoors with almost no direct sunlight, so ISO 640-1250. Looked fine, didn't get to see the end result though. Also worked with an fx3, some idion left it in rec709 and underexposed, so looked shittier than canon 80d.

@@jamdva8176 I don't know how much the 60d currently costs in Poland, but the d3200 with a basic lens costs about $200-250...

@@ztejstronymarcin If interchangeable lens camera is out of budget, buy samsung pl210, shoots decently, not that bad in good lighting, autofocus, 24-240mm zoom range, portable, costs less than $50 on ebay. In hs I worked for 2 months to buy it, cheap midi-keyboard and a relatively cheap graphic tablet.
