- My wife Sam joins me in this video (to my demise) to learn how much my photography equipment costs.

My biggest fear is that when I die, my wife sells my gear for what I told her it cost.
😂LOL
Well at least you won’t know about it🤷♂️. Right? I feel the same way😂.
My biggest fear is waking up and my canon gear becoming Nikon gear
You would be very lucky if she does that. Most likely she will sell them in a garage sale or Sunday market - probably $5 each! 😁

I think your wife is calibrated for USD. 😂
More like Kuwaiti Dinar. The underestimation was brutal on some of the items.

“I honestly can’t remember anything you’ve said about any of this” …….. excellent
remember that day she said she didnt hungry while passing a hotpot restaurant.
She can't believe that a thing with which you can fly and film can cost so much less than a boring black tube with a glass lens.
Truth be told, seeing the videos I shot with my DJI Mini 3 Pro I can't believe it either... You have fun with it while flying, videos are 4K perfection straight out of the drone even without any editing.. like this thing should never be this cheap
Scariest video on youtube. I mean I talk about gear with my partner but I don't actually think she realizes the amount of money that goes into this stuff 😂.
Yup
It would be scary if she was not so lovely.
Why does it scare you ? What could change if It's a genuine Wife and you are a real Man ?
You should check Markus Pix video on his wife.
My fiancée used to work for a lens rental company. No hiding for me 😂.
@@PhotographyWithAntonio I think you should have also told her how much money that gear has brought to you, in the case you did earn more then you payed for them,
My wife does not know when I buy another camera. 😂 They all look the same to her….
They’re all black. They’re all the same. I have a mate who has managed to the same thing with cars 😂
So, always stick to one brand, as the cameras look same-ish :D.
Change brands and you are screwed :D

Just watch out for those handbags, it’s easy to drop camera money on bags.
As awkward and hilarious as this was, I think I’ll take away something really important from this video as well…. The average non-photographer has absolutely no idea how much the equipment alone is worth 😂 which could explain why it can be hard at times to convince clients why the job is worth what it’s worth.
Overall an amazing video - educational and cringey! 😂👍
Yes, I was going to say that to the uninitiated the prices sound ridiculous; it’s almost impossible to guess prices accurately without a frame of reference. And when a client thinks you’re overcharging them when you quote them for a job this is often why.
And you can save so much by shooting with a 15 year old pro-DSLR (D700, D5 MK2,...). Your clients wouldn't know the difference.
She’s smiling but as you go down the line you can see the annoyance growing on her face.😂
I swear I could read her thoughts as they went down the line: "there's my vacation", "downpayment for a new car" ... 😀
Well, I don't think it is that bad considering the wages down there probably. If he earned like 1000 monthly like in other countries, that would be a big ouch.
@@cortkatanakx1qyep. The prices in the uk are about half the AUD in nominal terms but the wages here are about a third 😢
@@stefan33uk Yeah, tell me about it. I am from Slovakia.

Dude, I tried so hard to find it for this video but I think I lost it 🥲
I'm married for 40 years...I would never do it in private...let alone online,my wife is an angel but yours surpasses all angels...
Man, you're the bravest of us all!😅Not in a million years
My girlfriend was excited when she discovered I got high end gear, she was like "well this is why photos look that cool"
Well I don't know if I'd be happy ("Wow, she's a supportive keeper!") or slightly offended ("It's the person behind the camera that takes the photo") ahah
I paid £325 for my camera £350 for the lens. They retailed for 2000 and 1500 back in the day. Buy used SLRs. It’s shocking what good glass you can get for cheap these days
I know it's all relative, but the exchange rate between USD and AUD is painful.
Aussies also cop what's called the "Australia Tax" by Manufacturers, where the price charged isn't the same after exchange rates and sales taxes, but about another 30% on top. Apple, Canon, Samsung and Nikon are all pretty savage on it.
She’s not far off guessing larger and heavier as more expensive. Physics comes into play. Longer lenses are larger and heavier which is expensive. Large aperture is larger and heavier than their slower counterparts, and also pricey.
Thank you for validating my choice to use micro four thirds gear instead of any of the full frame systems :D
Speaking as a Pentaxian, you're still paying too much for the m4/3 gear ;)
This brave man just uploaded his last video.
Photography cost me 50.000 € the past 20 years. Swapping cameras or lenses for newer ones. Courses, fairs, flashes, tripods, harddisks, computer, lightroom, photoshop etc ... Luckily I'm single :-). And if I were not single, I pay it from my own money, so there is no problem.
I have astrophotography equipment that's worth about 30 to 35k (USD).. I won't even discuss pricing at home, as it makes no sense to talk about it. Especially when I am maybe able to use it once or twice a year (if even) due to bad weather and how far high up north I live (hardly any astronomical darkness in the summer months) and usually having to get up for work in the morning and not having a permanent setup.
Damn right man, what were you thinking? I once told my wife I was buying a new lens and that it may be expensive. She said OK. But when she saw the CC bill she said "I thought you were buying a new lens, not a new car." Well, I needed something to haul it around in.
And this was the last that anyone saw of Antonio.
That look over the lens she thinks are the most expensive when she hears the price of the first lens being 1400 is just priceless. 😅
At least it’s your career and you make money from the expensive camera gear but most of us are amateurs and it’s a money pit 😔
I hope you have at least fun in researching new gear?
Chuck Norris wouldn't have the balls for that.
I like her eyes go over it and over it and looking at all the stuff you could have had together. That nicer car, bigger house, less mortgage. But you, my friend are a very courageous man! And I hope you have all the gear you need because there might be many ‘NOs’ from now on 🤣. It is scary how much we spend on that hobby; put it into perspective. I mean I tend to forget how much I spent!
I mean thats not really true though. He is a working full time professional, not a hobbyist. This equipment is what enables him to earn a living and pay for anything, its just a cost of doing business and every item is a tax write-off. And really its not super expensive in the great big scheme of things, imagine if he was a mechanic with a shop full of tools, lifts, etc. Individual items with photography are expensive for sure, but you don't need that many of them.
Now, if he was just a hobbyist I could see her prepping the skewer for his balls about now. ;)
Or he was a bird photographer with those 600mm and 400mm 😂😂😂
@@ryancooper3629 that is true. But the look on her face though towards the end 😂 and still, even as a professional. The amount we spend on gear is insane, once we add it all up. Of course we do not buy the whole set at once, but the final amount always gets me!
@@FabienMathey My point is it really isn't. This is the majority of his pro kit and what is the total? $40k? $50k? (too lazy to add it up)
For a service professional that's peanuts. A mechanic will spend 2-3x that on his set up.
Its expensive for a hobbyist, but from the perspective of a professional service provider its actually a really cheap entry. Especially considering there is no real estate requirement such as paying rent or mortgage on a facility.
Especially when you consider that nothing on that table is critical to starting a career as a wedding photographer. He could be very successful with lenses that cost half as much, across the board. That 85 1.2 is an amazing lens, but so is the 85 1.8, for example.
@@ryancooper3629 i know that. But 40k is still a lot of money, even if you can pay it off easily if you’re getting booked regularly. Also, it depends on the country. In Australia, this might be easy, but in other countries, even for the seasoned professional, this is not always possible to pay off in time.
What I want to say is that as a non-photographer, the final number just brings chills. Looking at the number with no business in mind.
I know that if you have a business, you need to invest in an office (even if it is in your house), a computer and then the cameras, lenses, flashes, batteries, cards, insurance, etc. And even if, with your business plan, you are able to pay it back, just looking at the summed-up amount in the end makes it a huge number. And of course you can write off certain things on taxes.
I also know for staring in wedding photography, you do jot need 40k. You can get by with a camera and a couple of lenses for less than 10k and can charge maybe 1000-2000 a wedding in Australia after you have a couple in your portfolio. Then it will pay itself back quickly. The more you shoot, the more you charge and the faster you can pay off. But again, depends on the country.
Sweet to see how proud he looks and cares over his collection!
You’re a brave man for going through the pricing of your gear. I’d be homeless if my wife ever found out what all my gear cost.
She is adorable and I love this concept.
I’ve got 9 Nikkor lenses, 4 DSLRs, and a ton of lighting gear. HOW did I do it? NEVER told a g/f!!!
Mans about to have a very expensive Christmas 😂
I can't help but say how beautiful your wife is. You sir have won at life. May you both have lovely life❤
Enjoyed the video. Pretty bold to discuss equipment costs all in one setting.
But to demonstrate real bravery you should do another video where she adds together all your camera gear on a calculator so she sees the grand total.
Then have her compare that number to all your furniture, or jewelry, or her clothing, or her car. I’d like to see that video… yes, please! :)
Are you a divorce lawyer 😂
You're a brave man! 😅Please share a follow up with how your relationship is going after the reveal. You are a lovely couple. My beautiful wife knows I spend a lot on equipment, but I don't want to discuss the topic too much.
Lots of fun to watch - I'm too scared to do this with my wife 😅
Dude you are brave. I would never tell my wife how much I have spent on my gear 🤣
I like how as information and reality start to trickle in, your wife's gaze becomes more and more hollow and distant.
Very genuine human, she deserves a gift bro
Never use the two expressions "This was $4100" and "I don't use it too much, it's a bit heavy" in front of your wife. These things get remembered!
Noted
Yes, I know there’s definitely a conversion rate between the Australian dollar versus the US dollar. But it did always make me sad that other countries do end up paying much more of a premium than we do here.
A very quick search shows that the average yearly income in Australia is a little over 92k. In the US its a bit under 60k. So the salary in AUS is 1.53x from a strictly numerical perspective. The exchange rate is 1.52 AUD to 1.00 USD. B&H is showing the 85/1.2 at 2796 USD, which is 4249.92 AUD. Even after a 10% tax, it seems like the AUS prices are a bit higher than their US equivalent.
Next challenge is an assortment of exclusive designer handbags.
When she heard how much the little 35mm cost 3:12 and then looked at the larger lenses 😂
I keep covering my eyes like a kid watching a horror movie!
BAD idea. It will harder for you to get a new toy.
She’s a great sport.
People are always surprised by how much our gear costs.
It’s why I always travel with my gear in hand luggage.
I once had a host try to make me check the bag.
I countered with the question “can the airline guarantee my $15,000 worth of gear won’t be damaged?”
After recovering from the price tag shock, she managed to shift someone’s bag that was full of jackets.
Well first of all congratulations on your wife. ^^ Also a nice model I guess.
I also have that dust rocket. Had to buy a new camera and lenses, cause I lost my good old 50D in Ireland last year. Went to Sony full frame mirrorless, love the shots, hate the camera design.
Man, Aus is messing you up with the pricing. The Z6II in America right now cost $1600 USD about $2400 AUD
She is adorable and you sir are very brave!
Honestly, seeing this... just reconfirms my choice of running with two Fuji XH2S's, 2x Fringer III adapters and a Sigma 50-100/1.8 and a Sigma 18-35/1.8. I think that total expense comes a little over for what you paid for just the Z8! I honestly don't know how you turn a profit, the market isn't paying us very well these days :(
...and you wonder why she's annoyed, after you told her you didn't have the money to go out for dinner last week.....
idk.. if someone is dropping this much on gear they can definitely manage dinner whenever they please as long as they got their priorities in order lol
I would have been killed by the second lens price by my wife! Samantha took it pretty well.
Wife : "That lens costs $4100 ?! That's like two months of keeping my nail artist in business !"
This shows how this prices are ridiculous outside of photographer's bubble, small 1 battery can cost 100-200$, when you can buy 3-5 pack from somewhere else. This prices were always insane
Just off topic, your wife seems absolutely lovely.
Phew! I'm a photographer and was guessing the prices in USD and was like man I'm WAY OFF..until i did the conversion and was relieved I was pretty spot on. but also relieved that I chose to go the APS-C route..
She was smart to sort the lenses by weight! That's a good general rule of thumb whwn it comes to like-fof-like electronics. You said 'it's not about weight but the specs' - it kinda is about weight. More materials, higher quality materials, bigger glass = more expensive.
I decided to go mirrorless, coming from Nikon. I ended up switching to Canon, thinking I'd made a mistake when I saw glass/lens prices. But wow, prices are about the same. Your wife is hiding her disbelief well... Hopefully these are tools for your trade and you make real money with your gear. You're a young couple who likely need money for a future family and other responsibilities. Good luck.
its funny because cameras and lenses cost a lot but someone not into photography they cant comprehend the cost. but they are reallt willing to spend thousands a year on hair and makeup and fake eye lashes etc etc and not even think about it. best thing about photography is the resale value over fake eye lashes and other stuff women spend money on (subscribed)
She took it well! She's a keeper 😊
Damn prices went up since I bought my stuff in the D4/D810 era. Like the 70-200mm f2.8G II was around $2700 in Sydney back then. 14 years ago though.
Z mount version $4,100 eesh
Only reason I would want to upgrade from the D810 though is for the waaaay better video capabilities of Z8/Z9. In which case I think using the G->Z mount adapter would make way more sense than trying to rebuy all my glass.
I'm totally with her on the drone, logic says something that literally defies gravity should cost more than silly piece of glass. The cost floor for drones has come down so much these days!
YOU'RE LUCKY BRO! YOU HAVE SO MANY LENSES AND A GOOD WIFE! WISH YOUR FAMILY WELL!
Great video. You are lucky you don't shoot with Leica. When my wife found out that my used 35mm double aspherical manual focus lens that fits in the palm of her hand was over 20k USD she said she would leave me if I bought anymore gear. LOL It definitely hasn't stopped me. All the best.
I also have a Z8 and 105MC. I use it for portrait and macro.
Can you advice should I go for a 20mm or 24mm or 35mm for landscape??
Thanks
This is fun to watch. And not that surprising, really. I've been in cameras for a long time now, and I still can't believe how much it all costs sometimes. The average person has no idea. Like, when something so small as a camera body can be worth as much as someone's car... it doesn't compute.
My wife and I share expenses, bank accounts, everything. Well, we're married, so... I never spend any serious money (i.e., three figures) without letting her know and getting her input. She does the same with me. She doesn't begrudge my photo stuff (which admittedly is less than most photogs) nor my astronomy stuff (which is worth more at this point). I don't begrudge what she spends. But we're both aware, since it's OUR money -- Not mine, nor hers.
For not knowing anything to start out, I thought she lined them up pretty well. Heavier and taller was a great starting point for lenses. You need to add some vintage glass in there to really throw her off 🙂
Prices are crazy expensive. Some of the prices are over paid, like the microphones ($700). I can't tell exactly what they are, but the DJI mic 2 kit is $530.
You are a lucky man, having someone so adorable to play along with this.
Wow, you are one brave guy. Your wife looks like she is a good sport. My wife would have killed me with a blunt object half way through filming this video...
i really felt it when she put the little zipper case all the way to her left
i don't think i'm ever really going to recover.
Are australien prices so out of hand ir is it Nikon? I though Austria was expensive but I got my 35mm 1.4 (new 835€) for I think round about 450.
The key is to take her shopping for what you want to dif brands, etc try them all out, at the end she will be tired of it and say just pick one so we can go home. This works for most things but I'm still awaiting my focal sopras.
I mean apart from the camera gear, we all learned a valuable life lesson here today. And you know what that is my dudes.
I love the PD bag. Don’t have those lenses but it works with other stuff too
🙆 I think after hearing the price of each gear, she was like "when did he buy this? What did I want and didn't get around that same timeline?"... 😅
Brave man, good luck on your future purchases!

Love this idea! Wait until she finds out the cost of the gear you want next.
I made the mistake of taking my wife to pick up a vintage mandolin with we. I got my mandolin. Shortly after she got a new car. I have since learned to keep those things as vague as possible because I can’t keep buying German sports cars every time I get a vintage Gibson.
Thankfully I paid for all my gear with money I made using the gear I had previously. Then I used the earnings from that to take my wife to Norway. She didn't complain 😎
"There's no way that lens was more than 200". That look up at the camera was priceless. 🤣
Don't know why expending so much in official brands, with go with sigma and Tamron, they are half the price and they have excellent performance
His cheapest lens is 1000 dollars ... I need to get a new hobby

I was speaking to a friend of mine who is a well known photographer, and I told her how many lenses, I have and she was shocked. Basically collecting lenses has become a hobby, which I pay for by being a professional photographer.
She seemed relatively calm about the prices. So when you mysteriously die in your sleep, she can show this at the trial....
You should have added up the total at the end for the for maximum shock value!
This was very entertaining! I could never do this with my wife. She would probably faint after we got above $2K USD.
... You like to live dangerously lol, (allows tell swmbo the price divided by 2... she still maintains that the cost of stuff is ridiculous!!!)
Good to see that there are 2 new videos on the challet after that one, so the dude is probably still alive.
Thank god for Fuji. That 85mm cost me approx $1000 CAD.

Her face expression when she learned the mics costs 700AUD... Priceless!
It goes fast. A camera, flash, mic, several lenses, bag, cage, batteries, sd card, gimbal. That’s why it is smart to don’t put everything in body camera.
