Lotus is not that important for meditation anyway. It just looks fancy, that's about it.

Joey and Stu, interesting video. I can add on to what you have mentioned in this video by saying that to sit in the Lotus pose for a longer time you should also begin to build up your back muscles - as many of us are just too used to sitting on chairs with back support and neglecting the back muscles. Thus endeavour to sit without any back support - whenever you are sitting down during the day - and to take your mind off the effort you could do this while for example watching a movie or while on the phone. I also want to add that after training in the Butterfly Pose and you might feel ready for the Lotus Pose, just put that excitement on hold for a while and instead of jumping straight into the Full Lotus - just start with one leg at a time by practicing the Half Lotus (Ardha Padmasana) for some time. You could train this the same way as when training your back muscles and doing it while watching a movie, etc. Also remember to switch legs from time to time. Only when you can comfortably sit in the Half Lotus, should you progress to training with both your legs in the Full Lotus. I have a video on Padmasana in my channel guiding you through this whole process and which could complement the tips from Joey.

Extremely insightful pointers, which all my Yoga instructors over 25 years never told me! I consequently hurt my knee joint flexing too much there, as Tim mentioned, rather than exploiting rotation at the hip joint. He has also given some easy and useful starter exercises for the hip rotation, lying on the back.
A guru worth following. Guruve Namaha!🙏🙏🙏

Now I see it is not open all the way until I can master lotus and headstand and on top of that, I keep learning about all types of terminology like ashtanga, double pigeon (any idea on what chakra that is connected to?), malasana and much more. I appreciate watching your video. I started yoga when I was age 71, at an intro class. The instructor went into a half lotus and then I figured out that I could and did do that. The other poses that followed I felt clumsy. But I went home and found on TH-cam a person that I could follow her instructing lotus. After 3 weeks, I was able to do lotus left leg then right leg. 4 weeks later I managed right leg then left leg. I found that doing butterfly, I couldn't get my legs all the way to the ground, but if I adjusted my feet to slide together somewhat, the knees were on the ground (and if I had a little forward posture). I think I was able to do this, as teenager (& later), I would put my toes in the crack of my knees as they were frequently cold. Now I'm 73, and find that in my beginner yoga classes for 6 months that no one does lotus, except that in my practice, at the end, I just go into lotus. I can't do lotus without my hands. But I find the lotus posture is easy to maintain, and difficult to slump over. Now, I mention this is that I am no wunderkid at yoga. Forward folds in sun salutations I struggle with. Balance with my bare feet is a patient quest (although not with shoes on). One of my yoga instructors thinks I have flexible hips, although not legs.
