Always remember the introduction of the 313, everyone was furious the coastway was getting rolling stocks over 20 years older than what it already had. Won’t miss them but will always remember using them late at night after I’ve had a few too many 😂
I had to ride on the 313 to go to an eye hospital appointment in Brighton and I am bound to say I quite liked it! Compared to the Electrostar, it seemed to me there was better ventilation, although it has to be admitted the 313 rattled along a bit!

455s are now withdrawn from tattenham corner, now have 377/6s I remember when they had their original interiors with south west trains, never saw them with southern.
Update: Southern Class 455's has officially been removed in 2022. 313217 is now being used for parts which now makes it 19 Class 313s.. A class 171 has been moved to EMR as predicted but now it awaits its new paint scheme and interior. The rail tour for the 313's is Unknown as well with their withdrawn date.. rumours are the tour will be in May or July...
Fact:the 377/7 were moved while the 377/2 took over they ran as 8 cars then to 4 cars until they were moved and the 377/7 returned to the west london line
Imo the turbostars are the only trains in southern Fleet that I would ride on willingly and they're the trains of my childhood being my favourite for the pas 8 years so don't go class 171. 😪
You say the 313 is the oldest stock in regular use, but the class 43 HST are still in very regular use around the country including on GWR, X Country and in Scotland. Also the class 57 is in regular daily (or nightly) service on the Riviera sleeper service. These all pre-date the 313 by a very long way in the case of the class 57.
To be honest I can't remember what they said, They only seem to appear on the 377/3's so could have something to do with the services on the South Coast at the time.
@@BPMR could have been Wi-fi fitted. Do vaguely remember when they formed 6 coach services that the recorded station anoucment said saying Wi-fi was available
I know the the 377s 375s and 717s at Ashford International i have travelled on all as for comfort i still prefer the 395s there was a Romer that overhead wires for a new fleet of trains at Ashford International to replace 717s but nothing yet has happened
I've not heard of any plans to replace the 313's yet but I can't imagine that they have much time left. I'll be surprised to still see them around by then end of the decade.
That sounds interesting. When I worked for Southern I remember it being said that it would cost £1m a mile. Not sure how true this is thou. It would make sense to electrify the route.
If only! Unfortunately there appears to be a crackpot idea circulating among the powers that be that 3rd rail dc is inherently dangerous and must never be extended.

As a Brighton local I won't miss the 313s when they go. They are well pass their sell by date and need replacing.

The last surviving 313s will eventually be retired this year. So It'll just be the 377s and 171s
We could have the 379's replacing the 171's if they weren't withdrawn. Because they have been withdrawn in february, this year.

Your right, however the 313's are the oldest emu's working on the national rail network operating standard timetabled services.

I have to admit that every time I pass through Purley I only see class 377's heading in that direction.

Is it Network Rail that issues Class Specifications and Numbers?
Trains are allocated a number on the TOPS system where there is space. I'm not sure who is ultimately responsible for this, could be NR or the ORR.
