Ever wonder how he got so good at combat? Him and plagueis used to visit some remote hostile planet and fight the natives just to practice their abilities. It was a sith tradition to visit this planet when the rule of two was put in place. So yes, quite literally his days off were to kill random people and things lol.
What a conundrum the guard ended up in. On one side, he knows the person he is guarding doesn't need him at all, so he can relax. On the other side, the person he is guarding can kill him with a thought so he can't relax.
After Sidious tells the guards to leave them on the Death Star; "...Should we really leave him alone with this Jedi? I mean it's our job to protect him." "Gary, he can destroy armies with a flick of his wrist. I think he'll be fine. Now lets go check out this place's omelette bar!"
Right after the Emperor pulled out a lightsaber and used the force, Vader should have pulled the clone guard aside and said “Look! The emperor is a secret Jedi! Execute Order 66!”

I know people don’t want to read a book about a movie, but in this case I feel like it’s a good idea, there are too many stories to tell for the series to be movies only.

I read that book- it was fun, decently well written, and Palpatine was a surprisingly engaging and fun viewpoint character. And your description of his attitude and manner in the story summarizes it very vividly- especially how you describe the battle in the lylek nest. I laugh now to remember page after page of this. It was like Palp's fight with Yoda except he was having even more fun. It was... joyful.

Wolfgod 64 in the canon thrawn novel, (and I may have painted the wrong picture in my mind - as this was a book and not as clear as a movie or tv show) but I felt like palpatine was just sitting on a throne in the ground floor of the “imperial palace” (which is pretty open, not open to the public, but open as in like, massive open entrance ways kind of stuff, man my vocabulary is awful today ahah) but yeah, the part where thrawn and Eli go to meet palpatine, I felt like he wasn’t all that hidden away, like If someone was looking into a telescope from a 7-11, (errr.. or an admiral snackbar?) across the street from the palace, they’d be able to see him sitting there. Of course, I may have pictured that scene all wrong, I also might not even be remembering it right, maybe they weren’t even at the imperial palace in that scene.
Tell ya, Lords of the Sith has been one of the best New Canon books so far that I've read. Great story but where it truly shines is most definitely showing just how both powerful and maniacal Sidious was. And getting more chances to see him in combat action was quite fulfilling.
So why did Palpy actually need guards that were so well trained? Why not just some regular Stormtroopers or Death Troopers? If they were killed, Palpy could've dealt with anything that came his way himself.
because Sidious did not wan't to reveal his identity to anyone. The only people who Palpatine allowed to know he was a sith were Vader, his imperial guards and in legends a handfull of others. In some dangerous situations Palpatine wanted people to come out alive, if he revealed his powers everyone present had to die. Also the Guards were sent on missions for palpatine which required highly trained individuals, missions which were important but not worth the time of Palpatine or Vader. Also they're part of Palpatine's public image.
His apprentice DID openly call himself "DARTH Vader" though. If his apprentice is openly using his Sith title, you would think it would be pretty easy to deduce that he was one as well. After all, "Always two there are," and no Sith master would ever serve a non-force-sensitive Emperor.

Did rebel leaders such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma know or suspect what Palpatine was? They certainly knew about the Jedi, they knew about Vader, and knowledge of the sith or at least the dark side of the force was certainly available to them.

I read that book, very badass. It was nice to see Old Sheev battling it out. He did seem like he was enjoying himself very much, dancing and spinning, a ballet of death. Meanwhile Vader and the royal guards were very hard pressed. I was also surprised that the one royal guard survived, and impressed! If the royal guard was wondering if he was ever needed to protect The Emperor I'd say this: "You are dust motes in a storm… a grain upon the beach… " Great video.

His apprentice DID openly call himself "DARTH Vader" though. If his apprentice is openly using his Sith title, you would think it would be pretty easy to deduce that he was one as well. After all, "Always two there are," and no Sith master would ever serve a non-force-sensitive Emperor.

That one guard who survived - probably was the one who would become warlord and attempt to kill Kir Kanos - all that he saw would prove he needed more than his skills as a warrior, he needed the force.

Did rebel leaders such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma know or suspect what Palpatine was? They certainly knew about the Jedi, they knew about Vader, and knowledge of the sith or at least the dark side of the force was certainly available to them.

I read that book, very badass. It was nice to see Old Sheev battling it out. He did seem like he was enjoying himself very much, dancing and spinning, a ballet of death. Meanwhile Vader and the royal guards were very hard pressed.
I was also surprised that the one royal guard survived, and impressed!
If the royal guard was wondering if he was ever needed to protect The Emperor I'd say this:
