Gang Milling the Fireball Tool Fixture Plate

  • This is the second op for machining the ‪@FireballTool‬ cast iron fixture plate. I could not reach the outer side with an endmill so I decided to use the gang milling style setup to machine both sides at once. This is a great way to assure a part like this has two sides that are perfectly parallel to each other. It's also pretty fun to watch to!

    Adam,
My Grandfather was a machinist in the Navy on an "oiler" during the time between the end of WWII and before the beginning of the Korean War. I learned SO MUCH from him during my youth and I miss him dearly. He passed last year while I was deployed to the Middle East. Though I wasn't able to be physically present to say goodbye, my loving wife was there to stream video of the ceremony live to me from across the world. I was fortunate to be the family member chosen to (virtually) receive the American flag from the Honor Guard. Before rambling on further, the point I'm trying to make is this: I'm grateful for your work and the time you take to put together excellent content! It reminds me of my Grandfather and all the memories of him teaching me about machining and mechanics in the shop I helped him build in his backyard. Thanks!
    Happy Independence Day Adam!

the difference between master and appreciate is that master is some times slopy and appreciate is some time good.
It remindet me a variation on a quote. I dont fuck up all the time only most of the time.
For Abom it goes, im not prefect all the time only most of the time.

Thanks for a trip down memory lane....... When I worked for Boeing I made lots of similar setups with gang cutters. Always had to check the cutters for being on center and same diameter and width with the proper spacing etc. Most of our parts that required a gange setup sometimes as many as 4 cutters with varing widths came in "kitted "from the tool room so all I had to do was the setup. Heaven forbid if you broke a matched cutter! Always lock out the "Y" axis if possible. Believe me BAD things happen quickly if you pull the wrong handle. It was always aggrivating getting the right crush compensation on the shims. Fun times. You are correct in the climb direction. Anything suspect of being lifted always climb. I always set the table lock too so it would create some extra drag. Those old Cincinatti machines were well used so you learn to compensate if you know what I mean. I really like those heavy toe clamps.

A proverb i always use is "A man who never made a mistake. Never made anything"
My father who was a lecturer in brickwork always used to say when if something went wrong or a job wasnt perfect it was roman. As it was to be belived back then to intentionly put a defect in so as not to be perfect as that would anger the gods and man should never equal the gods.
He also used to say "some are born to greatness, some achive greatness and some are just f*&king lucky!."

I did wonder about squareness. Het ho. What you could do of course is machine the sides to exactly 300mm. The actual size doesn't matter for this purpose but if you can't hit exactly 12 inches, you could aim for 300mm which gives you a second shot at having a "perfect" size.

because it adds a level of error most machinist try to avoid. if done 100% correctly it is a time saver @ 99.99% it could cause a damaged part that would be scrapped ( but in this case he states it is not a problem )
he also notes he assumed a raw cast edge was square, the fact he admits his errors and will learn from them is a good thing
