    That pic of the plate covered in the roughing chips would make an awesome jigsaw puzzle - expert level, fitting as it was made by expert level machinist!
    That is a very nice result you are getting off the shaper.

    Doing things that may be different to some is important to learn a new or different method of doing a task. That is how we all learn and grow. I am a woodworker but I have learned so much about accuracy and love the different perspective you offer to all.
    Don't ever stop doing that!

    Abom "It's meant to be used. Don't be afraid to use the stone for what it's meant for."
    Exactly. Keep this in mind for every tool you have.

    That is a big honkin' vise, wow. When I went through high school machine shop, I was the only student in a decade to use the shaper for anything, the shop teacher loved my love of learning about everything - most of the shop students were burnouts and menaces to society (and themselves).

    Adam, there’s a company out of Nuevo, CA called Cal-Carb inc that fully grinds all their tool inserts. They surface, fixture, grind and hone every one individually. I worked for Curtis, the owner for a few years and it’s quite the process. Very interesting and extremely tight tolerances by use of J&L comparators. The surfacer is a Blanchard and the grinders are 1960’s Parker Majestics. If you want custom U.S. made, quality inserts, Curtis is your guy. Hand grinding is a dying trade even though tolerances are tighter than what these high output computer driven machines can produce.

    When I was in college 45 yrs ago we had machine shop courses and we built a bench grinder and a wood vise from casting to finish that I still have and use. The one machine I hate to set up and use was shaper but after being viewer and subscriber for awhile now I developed a whole new appreciation for that machine. The shame of it is they have dismantled the machine shops and manual machines. They now have a few Cnc toys that they are making trivets on no foundry no manual set ups just programing and button pushing.

    I really hate to be one of those people in the comments who just point out one little bad thing in a video, so I'll do my best to point out all of what I loved about it first;
    1. More Abom
    2. More of the G&E (not that I've got anything against any machine in particular, in fact, its hard to pick a favourite)
    3. All the tooling info thats gone into in as much depth as can be done without sending the average youtube viewer to the floor in a sudden deep sleep (thats more of a complaint about the average youtube viewer honestly)
    4. The little lessons dropped here and there (don't expect perfection, from a casting at least. if the tools doing its job then its not being ruined)
    5. The work that goes into getting the shots of the cutting. Theres so many angles, cuts, transitions, and the slow-mo footage must take a while if youve gotta find the nicest looking slowmo shot from one entire operation.
    But heres the but, the flicker doesn't do the shots justice! I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that having a couple of giant high wattage constant current LED videography lights blasting down on you in the middle of a Floridian summer, suspended from cumbersome tripods which will no doubt continually get in the way, would be inconvient to say the least. But they'd let you see so much more of the cut. Regardless, the slowmo shots are great!
    In case I hadn't beaten this horse to death yet, I always love to see a new Abom video, doesn't matter if the whole damn thing strobing like a disco. Even if my petty quibble is dismissed for what it is, I'm still gonna enjoy every upload.

    You should invent a device that lifts the cutter completely off the material during the return pass. An actuator or mechanical lifter would protect your honed cutting edge. As a straight razor user, I am delighted to tell you that you are the first machinist to recognize the significance of a perfect cutting edge. Nice work for the millionth time!

    I like that Iscar 16 11 tool and cutter. Trying to find one now. I love to watch that Big Boy eat. People who have to pay $250-$350 for a set of precision ground stones, and don't have a friend who can "touch it up" worry about ruining the stones. I love the striated look of a shaper finish. Great machining, that's why I watch. See you in Part 2.

    I understand how the casting process produces voids and hollows and you say for your purpose it doesn't have to have six perfect faces, but there must be occasions when it does, how much oversize would a casting have to be made to achieve perfection or should that casting be a reject and never have left the foundry?

    There's always going to be opinions. I have no doubt you know your tools and won't do anything to break them. Also I love your work. I really had no idea what a "shaper" really was until I saw one on your channel (ok, I'd seen the tiny lil' baby ToT used to have, but I thought they were that size and only used for keyways), but for the past few weeks I've read things how they were used and all that and I do love the serenity that tool provides while working. It's hypnotic and the finish is so good looking. I wish I'd have a place like yours where to see those tools in action. I myself can't really do anything precise with my hands, but I can appreciate one who can. And also drool for the low tolerances!

    Just curious Adam , have you ever tried to sprayweld holes like that...would it be possible?

    • @dariusconnoley4022
      @dariusconnoley4022 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, technically, but it wouldn't be a good idea. Cast iron is brittle due to the impurities of the metal. It takes a lot of heat prep before you weld it, and then as you weld it you need to peen it to relieve the stresses. Metal shrinks as it cools so it might crack during the cooling process. The cooling process it self needs to be done in a controlled, slow manner like in a bucket of sand.
