@@BellaDonna.58 We just started with the corridor and 2 bays. The chickens cleaned up their new bays. When we had time and money we added another bay and so on. We found little steps work perfectly for us. Enjoy it, regardless if you one bay or three. Cheers

Loved this video. Lots of interesting ideas. I would love to know the name of that anti-fox strobe light. I need that here for the coyotes, racoons and other predators. I am always trying to find ways of improving security for my small coop. I liked and subscribed - going to review more of your videos and looking forward to more videos coming soon ! But I'm just a first-year gardener and don't even know if that's an issue. I'm still sorting which questions are relevant and learning the vocabulary... lol🙂 Oh - and how many chickens are you keeping? I love your affection for them. Thanks in advance!
Hey M NP - Butterflies/ moths? they can pass through the chicken mesh and can lay larvae. The chickens do chase the the moths etc in the pens that are open. I haven't had any major problems. Sorry missed the chickens - we keep up to 10. We rehouse the chickens that have passed their egg productivity peak from egg farms. Currently we have 7, they normally last about 2 yrs after we have saved them. They lay about 3 eggs per week per bird, we are more after their habit rather than eggs. Not a bad last couple of yrs though. Better than a small cage.

I noticed in a later video that your nesting boxes have a hatch on the outside to collect the eggs without going into the main enclosure, nice. Do you have high temperatures where you are and any issues with that? Does the chook house have much ventilation apart from the floor? Where do you store your chicken food? We have a plastic barrel that we keep next to where we feed them (similar PVC feeder setup) so we don't have to carry it in each day or leave and come back if we notice the food is low. It gets really hot here, well over 40c and we struggle with keeping the girls cool enough so we planted vines over our enclosure for shade (passionfruit now though considering grapes next and cucamelon which grows like the clappers but leaves about 3 billion seeds to come up each time it fruits), also planted a mulberry on the hottest corner and some sunchokes on another for shade which die back in winter so they get some sun. Probably not something you would want with your setup as you are growing veggies and don't want the shade. We have to do many other things on the hottest days but each year we add more layers. Are you considering planting a dwarf fruit tree in each enclosure that will be protected from birds eating the fruit and protecting the root zone next to the trunk from the chickens scratching? The gaps in the main door frame into the chook run look to be large enough for foxes and feral cats through, maybe consider some extra insurance apart from the fox deterent systems in place. Really love your set-up and when we have more than a postage stamp backyard would like the do something similar.

Yeah we have the nesting boxes on the outside so we don't have to enter the enclosure. Easy access mainly for the kids, they have bad habits leaving the doors open. During summer we would reach the early 40's where the girls have the floor ventilation only. During winter we do reach freezing hence the straw on the bottom of the roosting box during those cold months. We are lucky where we have a forested gully and cool breezes reach the chickens in the late afternoon. The food is kept in the coop in an old olive oil barrel. We grow vine vegetables in the areas we are growing our vegetables in. Peas, beans, cucumbers, watermelons, zucchini and jasmine. This tends to protect the vegetables from north winds and provides some protection for the chickens. In saying this our central corridor is roofed and provides heaps of shade. The main entry doors are snug and no fox could enter plus we run the chicken mesh into the ground to prevent any digging. I haven't seen any dig marks since we built the coop. Fingers crossed. I hope this answers most of your questions, if you have any others shoot them across and i'll try my best to answer them. Where are you based? I've built and designed many coops in small urban areas. @@FatCowFarmTatong awesome thanks heaps. We are only on a 600(ish) square metre block, luckily our neighbours on all three sides agreed and we follow council restrictions. They get eggs when they want. In last years summer heatwave we had a day that got up to 49c and days were about 44-45 for a while. We lost one girl but had to do many things every day to keep the rest of them from dying. Not much airflow in our yard but we are managing to build up some layers of shade and this summer hasn’t been too awful so far.
Hey Man, i wouldn't load the coop with heaps of chickens maybe 2 or 3. It sounds like your all over it with shading for the warmer months. For the hot months we have installed a misting system in the past. This system can run off a solar panel with a deep cycle battery and 12 volt pump or straight off mains water. I think its pope irrigation but check it out with what suits. They run a twin water outlet timer unit (one for the chicken coop and the other for general garden use) this has 9 settings per day which would be ample for day use and runs a timing system between 1 - 90 mins. The spray unit would only need to be something from the irrigation area of a hardware store and run for 3 mins maybe 5 times a day. This would cool them down over the hottest period of the day. @@FatCowFarmTatong a local farmer is gifting me 3 laying hens to start me off. How kind. So a red, dappled and a blue. First time I will have hens. Predator proofing at the moment. Foxes and the dreaded mink as I am near the river.

Hey Multifin, I'm with you, the cups do take time for the chickens to understand it. A standard float switch bowl is certainly the go. They hold 5 litres and the chickens drink with ease. Cheers - Take care.

Hey Kelly, i didn't really think of that. But i think your on the right track. I have noticed now we have camels i've seen them chasing a couple foxes across the paddock. There like the new donkeys, both just hate foxes etc. Thanks for watching, cheers

Hi Noni, the wire is heavy duty chicken wire 1.4mm thick. No issues with sankes - touch wood. You would have to talk to someone in the know who deals with pythons regulary. Thanks again, cheers.

Use Aviary wire mesh 10mm, or mouse mesh 5mm just make sure the snake can’t climb it. Look up feral animal fencing designs

@@annemieke8409 its certainly open to make things things easy to clean. We pile old straw underneath to collect the chicken waste and use it for the compost to make soils. Have fun in the design, keep us posted on the progress. If we can help further please yell out.
