This proceedure seems a lot more natural and aesthetically pleasing. Rather than making a routine you just basically created a functional home for the chickens. Inspiring.
Hi Huw, thank you very much for your wonderful feedback! In the future there will be more content about the different elements and permaculture concepts in our garden! Great to have you here!
I am a permaculture student. I love this video because it is very detailed. Very down to earth. That’s my kind of flavour. I love to show you mine. My yards are divided in to two. My yards have almost all the elements you have in there. I am so happy. Great minds think alike. No, not really. I am only an applied student
These chickens are very happy. I kept our own small flock for years and know how much hard work it is to provide chickens fresh grass the majority of the day, week in week out! Great overview and love the section overhead, would be great to even get any additional input on the cycle of things from overhead perspective.
Came here from the swimming pond video and I just love your whole vibe so I subscribed. I have many of the same breeds of chickens as you do. Very nice set up. I'm in Oregon and i am on a .20 acre lot but I have my backyard set up similar to you as far as having my chickens compost my garden scraps/trimmings/weeds etc.. I like how you have the wood rounds surrounding your plant root systems. I might have to steal that ladder idea to make my compost heap taller. What I do now to stop them from digging away at the sides is lay big pieces of cardboard on the sides and then put some heavy bricks on top.. it does a good job at keeping the heat in too (it's very temperate in Oregon where I live) and it also gives cover to the worms so they have a chance to multiply before being eaten. Seeing your ladies run with the grubs made my smile. I am very quickly loving your channel. Thank you for putting this on the internet.
Thanks for the sub and your kind words, it really makes a difference to me! I can imagine that the cardboard helps keep the warmth and please keep stealing ideas ;-)
So so very helpful and achievable. Simple and very efficient. Thank you so much for sharing this. Have me so so many ideas. What I love the most is that it minimizes maintenance! 😊
Thank you. Great video. Looks like you've got this process down to a science. And the chickens are a gas. And watching them chase the one at the end was hilarious! I had to replay it and watch that part a second time. LOL. Looks like raising chickens can be fun as well as nutritious!
I had the same idea to have a compost area inside of the area of chicken pasture. It is amazing that make chicken immune system stronger by eating invertebrates. I loved you video! Congrats
Wow…. I have watched all of your videos and I love them all. I can’t wait to see what all content you have to come in the future. I love how many people are getting into permaculture these days. I truly believe it’s how many people could rid themselves of depression and anxiety.. it’s getting back to our roots that our ancestors have done for centuries.
Thanks! I still think that the space is on the small side if you want to give the hens the best life they can ever have. I`d make it a bit bigger if I would design it again!
Your channel is awesome bro! I just found it and watched so many videos back to back. Your voiceover style is so relaxing and the garden is delightful. Hi from Brisbane Australia!
i always wanted to have a chicken coop and chicken. but i didn't have so i have you-tube videos to get satisfied and happy while learning new thing about chicken coop. add more chicken breeds and hatch chicken eggs it is so much fun to watch hatching process and small chicks roaming behind their mother. you done a great job love from india
I love how well thought out your system is! Very inspiring and gives me so mnay ideas of how to implement permaculture in a smaller space! Love from Morocco 🇲🇦
Amazing! I am going to integrate your ideas into my garden and chicken area. I always give my chickens scraps to pick through and just scrape it up every now and then. But this composting area built in makes that job so much easier and will make composting easier for me
I love your design. I love how everything is very close and connected. Unfortunately, I decided to put the chickens in an area out of sight from people visiting as well as the shadiest part. The problem is that this is completely opposite from where compost is stored and gardens are located. I'm thinking about maybe on my next iteration of layer chickens making them a mobile coop or something. Thanks for the fantastic ideas!
I can recommend also feeding chickens and livestock with fermented grains and sprouted grains. The nutritional value of grains can greatly change during fermentation and sprouting. Thanks for the great video!
Great set up! We have 6 chickens right now and a compost area too. We love to garden so everything works out very well. I really like how you have your system set up for max results. God bless you!
How wonderful! I let my chickens roost and poop directly onto deep litter bedding. I add carbon-rich materials and water to it periodically. I also add earth-worms to make a vermicomposting chicken coop. In spring, I harvest black, rich compost full of earthworms and earthworm eggs for my garden.
You've an amazing setup for chickens am trying to implement permaculture have subscribed to your channel and hopefully will learn more.Thank you for the great video.
I did a small version of this with 10 chicken's before i moved to a place with a small backyard. It is very satisfying making compost from things that are seen as waste products while also giving hens a wonderful life. I based my system on the Edible Acres chicken channel sytem, check them out you would totally get some ideas to add to your own system. Great video, look forward to more chicken tv and gardening tips.
Charming set-up for the hens! Plenty of busywork for them. I have various containers of water, but never considered a shallow pond area…nice! 👍🏻 Chickens love catching frogs 🤣 Great way to work the compost as well. I enjoyed seeing your system, thank you for the video!
Good video, thanks for sharing. I live in the NW Caribbean Sea, Grand Cayman. We actually have an issue with feral chickens and they are very destructive/damaging. They are very damaging to crops as most are aware. I am an organic grower and I also follow the principles of permaculture. The immediate difference which I see is the fact that your fencing is all that is used, whereas in comparison, our chickens can fly very well and would have zero issue flying over the fencing which you are using. For me, it is necessary to have a complete enclosure. The design which I am about to build out has two separate but connected main areas; Area 1 is the main chicken coop covered with zinc roofing and it's own exterior door. Area 2 is the main composting area with a door that connects area 1 to area 2 that can allow the birds to be contained within area 1 when new material is being introduced into and/or removed from Area 2, thus disallowing escape. Area 2 will have tall and large double doors which will allow access by a tractor and a smaller door which will allow access for a person with a wheel barrow. Area 2 is designed to be 10' wide x 10' tall x 32' in length. Area 1 is designed to be 16' long x 12' wide x 8' tall. Area 1 is where the nesting boxes will be, and I will be using the feral chickens as setters for my duck eggs as the feral chickens are world class brooders. My ducks and geese are not flyers, so I am able to free range them in paddocked areas, and this makes them my best weeders and orchard keepers. Area 2 is designed as a deep litter method chicken composting system wherein; wood chips are laid down as a base layer 12" deep which is then overlaid with weeds/kitchen and garden scraps etc. and the birds are allowed to go to town. As they muck up and incorporate everything with their scratching and feeding and manure buildup a new layer of woodchips is added and so on and so forth until the area is ready to be mucked out and the process is started over again. The depth of area 2 will be able to hold up to 4 1/2 feet of built up material prior to mucking out. The mucked out material is then added to the hot compost/mellowing pile for a minimum of six months before use for growing. I see that our growing environments are different as you are in a temperate climate whilst I am in a tropical environment. I think the main difference is that I have chickens that can fly very well while you have chickens that cannot make it over the fence. As hurricanes are a threat, I have to build my system to be able to withstand extreme weather events. As time allows, I hope to be able to build out duplicates of this design in different areas of my land. For me, this is a way of taking what is a problem and turning into an integral component of the overall design concept of my small farm. Good luck and God speed with your endeavours, and if you ever find your way down here to my homeland please feel free to reach out and come to my small farm for a vist. J - High Rock Farms/East End/Grand Cayman/Cayman Islands.
Thanks a lot for sharing your interesting story and your way to turn a problem into a solution! Yes, our birds can`t fly higher than 1,5m and that`s way a 2m high fence is enough. I wish you all the best for the development of your farm! And thanks for the invitation! :)
