I work at [company that owns and operates lots of delivery vehicles]. I get to see the vehicle shop some days, and occasionally take a look at all the vehicles that are part way through a repair job. No lifts in use, ever... but they do have a whole bunch of jack stands. I saw a few that were clearly labeled as 6 tons maximum weight per jack stand. The vehicles that sit on 'em are actually somewhere around 6 tons empty weight (that's the total on all four wheels). I don't actually know why there aren't any lifts but I would suppose cost and safety might be involved. It doesn't appear they actually need to do all that many repairs requiring a jack or lift anyway (relative to all the repairs where the truck sits on all of its wheels instead)

“As easy as that” he says while the sweat drips down his back washing away whatever oil is on him. Hands destroyed but gives it a little tap enough for someone to see he has a bandage from probably either a tight spot cut or a breaking a bolt loose. What a man.
A manual swap is definitely looks and sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Had a roommate who needed to do one on his Volvo wagon after his automatic trans died and his brother was already planning on swapping his current manual for a newer/better one. My roommate took the old manual from his brother and put it in his car and, for a dude who hadn’t done a whole lot of work on cars before, he managed to knock it out in a weekend with the help of his brother (who was a decent amount more experienced) and his dad. The only reason I pretty much sat around and watched was because they didn’t need any extra help. The 3 of them got it done no problem.
This was a really nice format. Not full of clickbait crap, not super over produced but enough splices together with just enough tech info on the process to be watchable. More of this please.
This was very relaxing to watch. Its nice to see a swap video where the process is just as important as the end result. The music was also very calming. Thank you guys.
@@JuanG2020 People sometimes pay more for the manual car because is more sought after than the automatic ones, like in this case with the BMW if you saw the first video of him trying to find a BMW thats relatively clean and manual they will charge you an arm and a leg but if you get the less desired automatic BMW it's a lot cheaper due to people not wanting it and it is sometimes much cleaner because it wasn't beat on as much as the manual car
@@JuanG2020 There not cheaper anymore unless you find a clapped out one. 95-99 are getting to the 25 year old mark. eveyone that has a good clean preserved one, is scrambling to get a higher value in the car which is what making the market go insane with them right now
6:05 - Saw that sucker move and almost had a heart attack! Looked again and it was just an extra stand under the exhaust for support, no biggy. Whew... 😌 For real though like Zach said, don't mess around when you're lifting a car or you can easily end up dead. Something I used to train our newbies to do that would freak them out at first is that once you get it on jackstands, go all the way around and give it a *solid* shove from several directions. Why? 1) If you're -worried- that a little shove will knock it off the stands, that could be your instinct telling you that you made a mistake somehow and this is a good way to find out without dying. 2) Whether you're concerned about how stable it is or not, this will give you peace of mind when you're under it that one of your frisky coworkers coming by and leaning on, bumping into, or hopping inside it won't cause it to come down and squish you. 3) If (heaven forbid) a good shove actually does send it crashing down, you probably saved your own life and now have the benefit of being alive to take a good look at where you messed up on the stands. Once you understand what went wrong, think seriously about what to do next time so that you don't die if some doofus comes by and disturbs your precariously balanced body crusher.
Such an interesting market you have there in the US. In most parts of EU, you will only find E36 with a manual, you must pay quite higher price to buy an automatic.
While manuals might be cheaper to make, they don’t turn enough of a profit in the states, and everyone buys an auto. It’s easier to make an expensive technology cheaper if the demand for it is significantly higher than the actual cheaper option. And it’s just a scenario of the manuals out there are driven by car enthusiast, so they tend to be driven pretty hard
You guys are both right and wrong depending on if this is a new car or used car in the USA and what the demand is for the particular USA market. For this used car, the manuals are more expensive because of the small market of people thay buy these for racing drives the price of the used car up as more and more manuals in good condition are hard to find. So the automatics of this used car are actually cheaper. In general a used car that isnt known for racing potential, then the automatic would be more expensive. Most new automatics in the USA cost pretty much the same as the manual. However, I have seen examples of the manual costing more than the automatic with the rest of the specs being identical. That's just marking up the price for the manual or selling the automatic closer to the MSRP because a lot of dealers dont carry manuals and the rare manual American is just willing to pay a little more just to have the manual . I recently saw this was the case for some of the manual 2021 Toyota corollas
@@alanchairez like regular commuter cars? I would want any VW sedan with the TDI since they are good on gas and if it’s manual, that would be the most forgiving car to drive in traffic.
Besides gaining more car knowledge this was just a fun video to watch. I could not help but grin stupidly when you pulled that sucker out of the garage and started shifting gears. Beautifully done sir
I would love to see you guys do a front wheel drive to a rear wheel drive conversion eventually. Maybe season 3 of money pit??? Either way I've learned so much from you guys and I can't wait to learn more!!
That would be an extremely expensive and labor intensive process that would require cutting and rebuilding the entire floor pan and tons of custom fabricated parts. It's been done by other car TH-cam channels I think, so you can check those out! Swapping a manual into an auto might seem similar to converting FWD to RWD but one requires simply swapping some parts and the other requires completely destroying the car lol!
I'm looking into manual swapping my car. Yeah it's probably easier to sell it and buy a manual but the car itself has a lot of meaning to me and I want to keep it for as long as possible. This video was awesome on helping me figure out if I should commit or not.
Keep in mind, depending on the car, depends on what you have to do to make the car run with a transmission that was not original to the car. Some cars, you have to make the car think its always in neutral, (neutral safety switch) but then you gotta deal with the reverse lights - this is a common issue. Other cars like this one, you have to lobotomize the trans controller. and others, you'll have to find a used working transmission controller from a manual car. (keep in mind some cars you'll also have to grab not only the transmission but the engine computer for that car as well - as they can be paired.) So remember to do your research for your specific model of car, don't want to get stuck trying to figure out how to get it working.
@@DaBoomDude Since posting this I have got myself a second car so the auto is my daily and the manual turbo is my project / fun car. That said if I do end up gear swapping I have kept in mind everything you said. It's just a lancer so nothing fancy and here in aus sourcing the gear box and even ecu for a manual version is easy.
Donut: “We bought an automatic because it’s a thousand dollars cheaper than a manual.” Also Donut: **Spends over 2k and a full day of work on an automatic transmission swap**
Ya, if you find an auto in great condition for $1k less than a manual that's in average condition, its worth the swap. Always easier to start a build with a car that is in good shape to begin with.
I just did this job on an e82 135i n54 engine. Automatic cars in my area are worth about 12k. Manual with exact same miles/condition are 18 or more, and you have to wait a lot longer for one to come up for sale, or switch to a nationwide search with the extra risk and cost.
I like all the guys from donut but for some reason Zach seems most identifiable. He seems pretty chill with a subtle sense of humor, and I like the way he explains things.
From what I gather on e36 forums from like 10 years ago, is that you really don't even need a zf transmission unless you're planning on pushing 500hp. Usually Getrag's hold up just fine. But this video really helps, Im planning on doing a manual swap on an e36 I'm trying to get, and the $2-300 difference is really going to help, it is a budget build after all. I do want to say though, If I can find a zf for a reasonable price I will definitely get it.
How i wish everyone has the money and skills to do something like that! Cant wait for the Money Pit (pick up truck edition) Also an episode on: up to speed "zach jobe" will do! Wonder where he got all that experience at that age
16:07 I was so confused to how he had a razor on his hand but then I remembered the comment about him having a magnet in his hand from the mechanics channel
If you have the time, patience, and money to take on such a project, then it could be worth it for the added benefit of shifting your own gears and taking advantage of the engine’s full power potential.
@@goldilocks9687 Agreed, if I was in this situation, I’d do a manual swap on a 328i that I bought brand new in the early 2000’s rather than buy another early 2000’s 328i with a manual.
It's only barely worth it if you're a machanic with your own workshop tools and plenty of spare time. Otherwise it's gonna cost you more than the same car with already a manual transmission.
I did this to my 98 Legacy GT using the Dirt Cheap Daily channel as a reference. It was super easy to do myself with basic hand tools. I only needed a little help mating the transmission to the engine because I didn't have the strength to manhandle it. Was not disappointed though. 10/10 best mod I've ever done and would do it again. Fun tip for Subaru owners; Subaru built all their unibodies up to the early 2000s the same way regardless if it was auto or manual in order to save on manufacturing costs. Meaning that Autos already had all the drilled/tapped bolt holes and cutouts for a manual swap just covered by plastic covers and clips. Pop them out and bolt the new parts on. Wiring was a simple matter too.
Hey, 00 Legacy owner here. So it's not that bad of a job? I've been thinking about doing the swap but there was a lot of fearmongering about how difficult, pointless and expensive it'd be.
Hola amigo yo quiero realizar ese cambio de caja automática a mecanica pero no sé cómo va conectado el cableado ni en qué modo retirar la caja automática si en párking o neutro espero me puedas ayudar saludos desde Chile
I suppose a finishing touch would be to instal a slightly shorter gear stick so one can quickly grasp the top of the knob to change gears rather than grasping the stick like it was a railway switch lever. BTW, I love Zach's enthusiasm and charm. He reminds me of Kyle Hill. :)
This was an easy manual swap. A beginner could do this over a weekend easily if you already have everything (I do mean everything) you need. I've manual swapped many different cars, some are a real nightmare and some are cake like this one. Honda and GM seem to be the easiest. I did a swap on a Focus and it was terrorizing, thought it would've been easy. Just another reason to hate fords. Do your research though, some cars actually are faster with an automatic. Mopars are notorious for this.
Safety Tip for Car on Jacks: Take wheels off and put under car near jacks in case it falls, the car should land on the wheels instead of you. (PS git sum coveralls ya'll, it saves your wardrobe, n u can put cool donut patches n yur names on em)
@@mrmedium7984 You should replace "is" with "includes/requires", because the torque converter fluid coupling is still a thing, and the clutches only engage above a certain speed
All depends on how "swap friendly" your project is... I've been called in on some real basket cases. Plus, I would encourage viewers to build, borrow or buy a cheap pilot bearing installer. It's super easy to make one if you have some imagination. I hate using a hammer on the end of the crank, can cause thrust bearing damage in the engine. Some guys are not gentle with a hammer.
My father and I ended up having to do this with my 240K Coupe. It had an auto.... which blew up. Luckily we had a perfectly good manual and associated gear from a 240k 4 door in the shed. Turned out to be a real easy job as the coupe had bolted on plates where all of the manual gear fitted. Took a couple of days, but when it was done, it worked great.
There is some scar there too. I've seen before some people get Subdermal implants of a magnet under the skin. I wouldn't peg Zach to be the type but MAYBE. CONSIDERING THE EVIDENCE

For real though like Zach said, don't mess around when you're lifting a car or you can easily end up dead.
This is so sick

@@TheKos2Kos whoa they have manual 2021 Corolla? That’s something I would consider over an auto.

I’ve seen Civics with it done. They had to convert it to rear/mid engined to do it.

I'm looking into manual swapping my car. Yeah it's probably easier to sell it and buy a manual but the car itself has a lot of meaning to me and I want to keep it for as long as possible. This video was awesome on helping me figure out if I should commit or not.
Felt that
Keep in mind, depending on the car, depends on what you have to do to make the car run with a transmission that was not original to the car.
Some cars, you have to make the car think its always in neutral, (neutral safety switch) but then you gotta deal with the reverse lights - this is a common issue.
Other cars like this one, you have to lobotomize the trans controller.
and others, you'll have to find a used working transmission controller from a manual car. (keep in mind some cars you'll also have to grab not only the transmission but the engine computer for that car as well - as they can be paired.)
So remember to do your research for your specific model of car, don't want to get stuck trying to figure out how to get it working.
@@DaBoomDude Since posting this I have got myself a second car so the auto is my daily and the manual turbo is my project / fun car.

Ya, if you find an auto in great condition for $1k less than a manual that's in average condition, its worth the swap. Always easier to start a build with a car that is in good shape to begin with.
But autos are typically less beaten
I just did this job on an e82 135i n54 engine. Automatic cars in my area are worth about 12k. Manual with exact same miles/condition are 18 or more, and you have to wait a lot longer for one to come up for sale, or switch to a nationwide search with the extra risk and cost.
It's getting used as a rally car so why would it matter if it has been abused or not, it's going to get abused either way.
