When I owned an 06 wagon I looked into an STi drivetrain swap, it was going to run me 4-6k in parts which included brembos and associated brake hardware; in addition to those costs I would have had to pay for a controller, new clutch & flywheel, fluids, pads & rotors & 5x114.3 wheels. you need a blastplate on the 5speed. the torque twist the gearboc and since its split down the middle it separate and it looses traction and starts to chew gears
For what is worth, DCCD doesn't change the torque split sent to each axle (50F/50R, 0F/100R, 100F/0R, it's always 35F/65R), it just controls the amount of slip in the center differential. Like a limited slip rear with a 60% lock up, except this is variable and in the center.

All of the work I did on my car’s drivetrain - new STI block c/w forged pistons, work on the WRX heads, modified intake, new turbo, and modified headers and exhaust was less than they paid for the transmission swap. And, I did it all by myself with the car on jack stands.

Would, perhaps. That's an old school technique used by drivers of previous era trucks, where synchros were absent. What would be much more helpful is precise RPM matching, but that requires deliberate practice
$12k on a Subaru trans? 4k gets you a 6 speed swap with brembos, which will hold 7-800 HP in stock form. Also for those of you that may be curious, You can use the 5 speed flywheel and clutch on the 6 speed just not the other way around. Aggressive clutches on the 5 speeds are what blow them up quicker as well. That shock load.
In regards to the gear grinding on low car, is there any chance of heat making everything expand/swell and them making contact again at the worst possible time? I’m assuming the oem gears were put in there with the smallest of tolerances as possible for cost savings.
I've seen quite a few people claim that the DCCD allows you to change the torque split, but I don't believe that's technically accurate. The gearing controls torque split and DCCD does nothing until one end slips, relative to the other. At that point the DCCD setting controls how hard the center diff works to maintain lockup between the front and rear, adjustment being from open to full lock, IIRC. Can definitely do better donuts in open mode though!
"The Driver's Control Centre Differential (DCCD) allows the center differential locking of the WRX STI to be dialed in and adjust its handling. It adjusts both an electromagnetic multi-plate transfer clutch and mechanical locking of a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) to distribute torque to the front and rear wheels. Auto Mode identifies the ideal power distribution for changing conditions, whilst Auto [+] keeps more power up front for increased traction. Auto [-] transfers more power to the rear for tighter cornering, and the six-step Manual Mode locks in the driver's favorite handling characteristics." This is literally from Subaru....

DCCD does not vector torque, it simply limits slip. The numbers on the controller are maximum slip percentages before the diff locks. Also, get off the clutch when shifting the dog gears. The whole benefit of dog gears is super fast shifting because no clutching is necessary. Just lift briefly and it'll pop right into gear.
I could be wrong but wouldn’t u have to use the clutch going from second to third and fourth to fifth because of the synchros? Assuming u wouldn’t want to ruin them. But I would assume third to fourth would be fine clutch less
They introduced torque vectoring on the '08+ models. I actually don't even use manual mode unless I want full lock. I just set front bias for gravel and rear bias for pavement.

Yeah it's like $4k max for a complete swap unless you're in the middle of no where, then you're looking at like $6k. These guys got scammed hard being in SoCal.
Depends what you are racing: Casual, track day, enduro, track conditions, weather, tires, etc etc. You gotta study this stuff yourself buddy, you’re only gonna get so far.
I genuinely think, RWD is the best. Unless you want time attack or all out performance. Then maybe AWD. FWD are cool too. Welp, up to you at the end of the day lmao. Your preference, your choice. AWD is scary if you lose control. Really can't do much except pray 😕
Personally I'm not the biggest fan of fwd, it just not my thing (It's not bad in a straight line though) . If you want to oversteer easily like in a drifting scenario then I'd go with rwd. But if you want to have that gorilla grip on the road when driving then I'd go with awd, it wont drift as easily, but in tight corners you'll have more traction. Awd wil also accelerate faster from a stand still because all four tires are spinning as opposed to just the rear tires. Rwd cars are more prone to burnout when trying to launch them hard. Sorry this is a little long winded, but i hope this helped.

You can get full STI 6 speed swaps out of NJ with 40k miles for 5k. Idk where you got your 6 speed swap but it’s probably an expensive west coast thing
They are like that meme of DiCaprio throwing money
Why are the prices so over exaggerated
PMP has 6 speeds for 2500... idk where theyre spending the other 9k
I get that the other parts could have been brand new and paid a premium for but it just confuses me how they got that high
I paid $3k for the 07 STI swap in my base 16 WRX.
You got to love a hi/low that keeps begging for parts so you can keep going on and on and on 😂 😅
That's why they break everything
So sick. Watching Justin work on assembling the transmission made my hands sweat. I have a huge amount of respect for the wrench monkeys that do that day in and day out, every transmission on every car, getting us all back on the road after taking a heavy little check off of our hands lol.
its not bad once you do it a few times lmao. you act like it's slave labor and completely impossible to learn
I'm in school for watchmaking and you don't even have to think about it after you've done 10 or so. everything's so familiar it just falls into place effortlessly

I remember donut back in 2015 and been addicted since. I noticed that one dude who continues to ask james for an up to speed on his dad...weird, but it would be cool to see a background on the guys, and how they got into cars and on to the channel.
They probably use the doors to get into cars.
Yeah the dude just wants to annoy James
I think his dad died from a heart attack, may he rest in piece

Love seeing Justin on here doing some cool stuff! I rebuilt my 6 speed transmission in my 08 Si, shid definitely gets stressful. I tried swapping the LSD out to put in my project car, but found that you need to do more then just dropping in the open diff. But now that I've done it. (Took 3 times to figure out what I messed up on) I am a lot more confident for when I do it again. I definitely recommend using gloves though, saves your hands a lot of cleanup. Next project, taking my RSX-S trans and putting a LSD in it for my 98LX K-Swap.

I love everything about these series you guys do. I truly believe learning how to do things the “low car” way make you understand the car much more thoroughly and makes you a better mechanic and fabricator … the struggles are part of hot rodding! Love you guys at Donut
Such a satisfying scene with both cars in the canyon. They really compliment each other, almost like little brother trying to outdo big brother with less money but at the end of the day, just bros in Subarus. 🤜🤛

Not really, a very costly and complex stock part, if you want quality aftermarket be prepared. Abnormally expensive to manufacture.
That price wasn’t for just the transmission…🤔
Rich people shit.
Thats with axles, rear diff, t case and flywheel
I really appreciate that you explain the technical details as text, and don't bore the more experienced viewers with something like "what an open diff is". The car people will know what that is, and I appreciate that I didn't need to hear about what an open diff is again 😂 thanks guys. Your videos always raise the bar for other car TH-cam channels.
you need a blastplate on the 5speed. the torque twist the gearboc and since its split down the middle it separate and it looses traction and starts to chew gears
I always forget how much of a treat Justin and Jobe are!!!! I love donut
For me, Jimmy aced this sponsorship. It's probably 1 in 100 ads that I whatched throughout. Great job!
Guys you got to do just an episode with that transmission specialist maybe go see if you can a work shop tour, the dude was super friendly and was a great teacher.
Jus wanna say I’m glad y’all did a HiLow on these two. Y’all really ran in to damn near every issue that’s plagued Subaru owners and explained why in great fashion. kudos.
Not really 😂
There needs to be more explaining for the Subaru's There are not all Problems listened
24:15 This is one of those cases where there is zero chance of denying that just buying the higher tier OEM car would be cheaper & outperform either alternative. This is really relevant in post 2000 era vehicles.

@@BariumCobaltNitrog3n Coilovers yes, LS no. I'd like to see period correct looking engines, maybe stealthy fuel injection on high car. Keep the old school vibe but with some subtle new tech weaved in.
I think the challenge on doing a high/low on cars that old would be having to find not just one but two examples of a car that are roughly same year, spec, and condition, and all for a relatively low starting price.

It's pretty obvious that just getting an STI is better than spending so much more to upgrade the WRX
Honestly, Donut has no damn clue what to do with a Subaru…
You can tell they don’t have a Subie bro in the crew
OMG!
I did the same STI swap on my modified 06 WRX about a decade ago … everything cost me about $4,000.
All of the work I did on my car’s drivetrain - new STI block c/w forged pistons, work on the WRX heads, modified intake, new turbo, and modified headers and exhaust was less than they paid for the transmission swap.
And, I did it all by myself with the car on jack stands.
well after lockdowns everything is like 10 times more expensive :v

Would double clutching help with the clunk going into 3rd and 4th?
No
Why not?@@klauskarlkraus
Would, perhaps. That's an old school technique used by drivers of previous era trucks, where synchros were absent. What would be much more helpful is precise RPM matching, but that requires deliberate practice
“Granny shifting, not double-clutching like you should.”
100% sure they could’ve gotten all new parts from flatironstunning for the 6 speed swap with the amount they spent for used parts
Man, Justin and Zack make a great hosting duo! They should have their own series.
In regards to the gear grinding on low car, is there any chance of heat making everything expand/swell and them making contact again at the worst possible time?
I’m assuming the oem gears were put in there with the smallest of tolerances as possible for cost savings.
Big tolerances are scheaper than small tolerances. I doubt that grinding is enough to cause measurable permanent deformation
You're right, someone at Donut didn't do their homework again.

14:46 ehy the puppy eyes 😂😂

DCCD does not vector torque, it simply limits slip. The numbers on the controller are maximum slip percentages before the diff locks.
Also, get off the clutch when shifting the dog gears. The whole benefit of dog gears is super fast shifting because no clutching is necessary. Just lift briefly and it'll pop right into gear.
I could be wrong but wouldn’t u have to use the clutch going from second to third and fourth to fifth because of the synchros? Assuming u wouldn’t want to ruin them. But I would assume third to fourth would be fine clutch less
@@cedarabbot7263 Fourth to fifth, yes. 1-4 are dog gears and thus do not have synchros.
They introduced torque vectoring on the '08+ models. I actually don't even use manual mode unless I want full lock. I just set front bias for gravel and rear bias for pavement.

Do you guys recommend rwd, fwd or awd for track racing?
It’s all down to preference
When possible i'm pretty sure AWD is always better in almost every situation if this is the only difference between the cars (unlikely)
Word of caution in case you guys don't know. Do not do full lock with the DCCD on the track/asphalt
Aw, I wanted to see them “dial it in” on the track! 😂
@@stephen3164 I don't think anything I say will help anyway. They've probably already gone to the track and wrecked the diff and are currently filming themselves replacing it 😂
