I catch a ton of mackerel in the U.S. by trolling at about 4 knots using planers and chrome spoons. It's the same all over the world. They are a pelagic species, so they chase their prey. You're doing a great job, guys!
about mackerel ,when you get first hit .throw burley around boat to keep school from moving on, and note tide and depth detail in area on chart ,eventually you'll never miss.
Have you considered looking at getting a seakeeper stabilisation system. I have one on my Galeon 510 sky yacht. You don't get any of the side rocking and it makes it safer walking around the deck.
I know the feeling mate. When I'm pulling my burger van and ppl are around I get nervous. And think oh good here we go watch me make ass of myself! Lol reversing it and stuff
I still get anxious mooring up, but a bow thruster has eased it a lot. Could be a good Winter Project for you if you get bored with Sarinder, to install a bow thruster?
Boat people are great. I can remember as a boy my brother and I catching dock lines for boaters coming in. We never hesitated to help and we never hung around to be thanked. We didn't need it or expect it as we knew the next time dad was docking someone would be there to grab our lines. Good luck on the tourney coming up.
Gemma, you make me crazy, the way you fish! Did someone teach you to keep bobing your rod constantly like that. Try leaving it steady for a bit then pull up on it once and let it sit again. The fish are probably having a tough time keeping up with your bait. Ed C
You will have to have a word with Troj (Troj's fishing). he is in Guernsey and getting loads of huge Mackerel. Also I don't think the non Mackerel were whiting, from what I could see they looked like small Pollock, of course I was not with you, so could be wrong, usually am.
Great video. When docking the line person can hold BOTH lines (or just a spring line) and get the boat stopped and connected. I thought your docking was well done, but you can bring the stern and bow line to the dock at the same time. Again, great fun and very good vid.
We always used to catch mackerel on line using feathers and motoring along at 3-4 knots. Not really ever failed and if you have at least 4 feathers on a line and two lines out the back as you motor around, then that is a good amount of bait to get on with.
It's nice seeing the Great Orme from a different view (only ever see it from land). Not sure it's worth it as it's a bit of a trek back to near where Boutari came from from, but when I used to live in Criccieth, the mackerel used to come in from the Southwest right into shore on the west side of the castle and then turn back out to sea again - usually being chased by a few dolphin.
I find one can control the boat by putting a spring out first and the control her alongside using one engine .Then put out a bow and stern line . Job done and make secure with all other lines . Well done for first time solos !
Hi Gemma and Simon you need to come closer to us here in the Isle of Man lots of mackerrel around us, love the content and your other channel, take care and lots of love Maria and Paul... xx
The Mackerel could be running late this year, depends on sea temperatures etc. They are also a mid water fish, we used to watch out for them on the fish finder. Shoals would show up mid-water and BANG, you could catch 6 at a time.
I know it was a ton of work, but now your boat is really good. Well equipped at great expense (and that is the way it should be. Another plus for both of you, you WEAR lifejackets - It is so easy to get tipped over the side when fishing - well done for that!!
unless in a 30 ft boat, generally connected bow line back to cockpit is standard practice. and even stern ;line in other hand also, depends on crew experience.
Shes a good sea boat, handled those green ones well. As for the four mackrel, I would have them under the grill rubbed with a bit of stir fry oil. Nothing like fresh makky. And I know where they were. In the fishmongers on the West pier in Howth in Dublin. Thats where I got mine and they were lovely. Pulled the bones before cooking, speeds up the dinner.!
Do you guys (especially Gemma) transition to having your sea legs easily now that you're on the water more now, or do you still get a little sea sick? Those swells were really rocking.
Yes mackerel are seasonal to a degree . They also tend to gather into large schools in the summer months .. rather than small groups .. I would suggest playing trial and error with your feathers to rather than just white try multi colours , and get some with real dyed feathers as opposed to plastic ones ..another old tip we used to use on our charter boat was to give the feathers a spray of WD 40 it actually works as a attractive
Does the engine noise scare the fish off - - well. I'm a Pisces, and I'm very wary of spinning props! :-) - - - Whjere are all the mackerel - in tins, on the supermarket shelves! 🙂
damn i'm feeling peckish, need some fish n chips in my life think the Mackerel go to school 'the school of fish' where they learn how to avoid fishermen, i seen 'em on some film, 'Finding Nemo' and another good one was 'The Meaning of Life' where they had to avoid Mr Creocote otherwise come south, loads of Mackerel along the coast here
back in the mid fifties, out off the Scillies, we used to haul Mackerel and big Pollock five at a Time on a hand Line with feathers, Times have changed, too much fishing for Fertilizer.
Gemma when ever I go fishing and nobody catches fish. Found out if the woman on board spits on the bait. The fish will start hitting. Good luck my friend 👍🤠
Every year the mackrel seem to come later and later then there was a rumour a massive Lithuanian super tanker came to the south coast and hoovered up all the mackerel and over fished it.
Shifting an engine of any kind into gear makes a loud “clunk” underwater, which is very effective at scaring fish. In most situations the noise most consistently heard underwater is created by people on the boat speaking loudly, laughing, or yelling.
personally I would feel safer in your cockpit with some hand rail higher up from free board about groin height, if you get a good fish you have no leverage.
Never liked mackerel - years ago I lived for a while in a pub and the landlord would get handed mackerel by the local fisherman for pints over the bar - guess what I was eating for tea more times than you would want. Never eaten it since.

those whiting are so sweet to eat, a great feed with about 10 for 2 people.
Take some binoculars and watch the birds - they spot fish pretty well. That's what we used to do in the Caribbean (No fish finders where I was!)
about mackerel ,when you get first hit .throw burley around boat to keep school from moving on, and note tide and depth detail in area on chart ,eventually you'll never miss.
A day on the water no mess to clean up well done love the sound of those engines🎣🚤🎣
Have you considered looking at getting a seakeeper stabilisation system. I have one on my Galeon 510 sky yacht. You don't get any of the side rocking and it makes it safer walking around the deck.
they're mini pollock guys not whiting. Your new dashboard looks mint Si 👍
I know the feeling mate. When I'm pulling my burger van and ppl are around I get nervous. And think oh good here we go watch me make ass of myself! Lol reversing it and stuff
I love to see this boat "run like the wind". Over-all she's doing great! And you two are truly an inspiration.
Used to use multie hook fether lines when was in the Scilly Isles the mackerel appeared to go for the coulored fethers on the hooks .
I still get anxious mooring up, but a bow thruster has eased it a lot.
Could be a good Winter Project for you if you get bored with Sarinder, to install a bow thruster?
Those engines sound bloody fantastic enjoy🎉
I noticed Ocean Melody when you were pulling back into the marina. Have you had a chance to visit with them?

First "whiting" was a baby pollock. Most of the rest seem to be, also.
Loved the video she runs lovely

Not many but plenty of fun keep it up guys

I've always been told to run a trailing line with foil to catch mackerel, simply because they are the magpie of the sea

Good luck on your fishing trip and have a good time.

What a battleship! A spring line would probably be helpful to ya when docking.

Maybe one day soon!

good vid on the boat fishing thanks lee
Glad you enjoyed it
How come you are only catching Chinese fish “Why Ting”
I know it was a ton of work, but now your boat is really good. Well equipped at great expense (and that is the way it should be. Another plus for both of you, you WEAR lifejackets - It is so easy to get tipped over the side when fishing - well done for that!!
We are big believers in safety, why people don’t wear them is beyond me!
A really good tip when looking for mackerel as bait is try tesco first 😀 it's usually the cheapest option
You have yourself a very attractive boat there folks.
Binoculars and follow the birds 👍
The birds do not follow the mackerel. If there are birds chasing fish, it is usually herring or pollock.
I often found they were close to the surface, many people fish far too deep, fish finders help a lot.
I love Whiting, I fillet and scale them, shallow fry them in olive oil with the skin on and eat the lot. Very nice flavour.
unless in a 30 ft boat, generally connected bow line back to cockpit is standard practice. and even stern ;line in other hand also, depends on crew experience.

PRATICE SLOW IS GOOD TO GET BETTER FOR TRYING TO BIRTH IN BAD WINDS .
Do you guys (especially Gemma) transition to having your sea legs easily now that you're on the water more now, or do you still get a little sea sick? Those swells were really rocking.
Fun! Looking forward to seeing you sleep on the boat!
Put a backup camera on your boat, it will help you see the back as you are mooring backwards.

Yall need to do a overnight trip on the boat!
I love to drive around the great orme on marine drive. Llandudno is in my top 5 fav places on earth
It’s a beautiful place
There's mackerel off the coast of Pembrokeshire around freshwater east towards Tenby. Also around to freshwater west.
Is this where the old saying "Holy Mackerel" came from...
I saw ocean melody!
What about trolling with a surfboard and a spinner? Or mackerel feathers.
Mackrel? Got 90 last evening! Gretings from your naboes Norway😊
Ææ
Nice one Chaps!😁👍
Thanks 👍
What are you jigging with Here in the USA Gulf States we use a silver jig in
water that is clear enough to reflect the sun light
I had plenty of Mackerel around Puffin island on Sunday, full string every drop
i was wondering why you had them on?? all my boat fishing unless trolling lures, we always killed the motors if drifting or anchor.
Does the engine noise scare the fish off - - well. I'm a Pisces, and I'm very wary of spinning props! :-) - - - Whjere are all the mackerel - in tins, on the supermarket shelves! 🙂
Are there any reefs around the areas? If so find one, and those small fish your catching cut them up in thin strips for bait. Good luck. :o)
damn i'm feeling peckish, need some fish n chips in my life

otherwise come south, loads of Mackerel along the coast here
Slow and steady ……….and A GOOD BRIEF BEFOREHAND ……and you will dock like pros …! 😂😂😂😂
The biggest secret of truck driving is "take it easy". Same with boats I'm sure.
In general in winter (southern hemisphere) Mackerel go way off shore & deep!
Small Pollack not Whiting guys 😂
A string of 4-5 feathers works best for me when I need Mackerel, and I keep the boat moving @ 4-5knots with the engine just above tick over.
back in the mid fifties, out off the Scillies, we used to haul Mackerel and big Pollock five at a Time on a hand Line with feathers, Times have changed, too much fishing for Fertilizer.
Are you both glad to be on that bigger boat 🛥️🤔than that small boat🛶🤢🤢🎣🎣🎣
Llandudno where all the mackerel gone! 😊😅😂😂😂❤
Gemma when ever I go fishing and nobody catches fish. Found out if the woman on board spits on the bait. The fish will start hitting. Good luck my friend 👍🤠
If you go to the far side of Puffin Island you will find Mackerel quite close in. I've had my best success on the drift.
Why are you throwing the whiting back? They are bloody delicious cooked fresh
just ad an anchor and nav lights to your wheelhouse,
Check the local pubs yet? Maybe they're all watching the football channel having a few pints.
You should have tried catching whiting, would have got loads of mackerel then 🙂
Find structure and you will find fish. Wreaks or off shore oil rigs will produce good results.
n old fisherman told me that you cant see mackerel on the sounder because they have no swim bladder. But you see the school of fish they is hunting.
why not experiment with whiting for bait as we use them for bait here in australia
❤❤
🤠
how much has it cost in fuel doing the 215 miles? what is the average cost per nautical mile?
Every year the mackrel seem to come later and later then there was a rumour a massive Lithuanian super tanker came to the south coast and hoovered up all the mackerel and over fished it.
Whiting are a great fish to eat where I understand Mackerel are some what of an oily fish to eat
your hull design is pretty wet spray at speed ,extra chine rails fitted could fix that,
The castle/rock island, looks like the movie sight for The Count of Monte Cristo. Maybe you should be looking for Treasure instead of Mackerel.
why don't you use a burley pot over the stern on the bottom?
Check under the macaroni noodles, they hide there sometimes.
factory ships taking it all abroad....Spain for example
🤠👍

Thay r polick
That first fish did NOT look like a whiting??? looked more like a "coal fish" correct me if I'm wrong😮
Why are you not using your fishing boat
Can you imagine going out in them conditions in a little 17ft boat! Deadly!!
personally I would feel safer in your cockpit with some hand rail higher up from free board about groin height, if you get a good fish you have no leverage.
👍⚓
Ask inshore trawlers they might know 😂
I was thinking mackerel is nasty. Why do you want to catch it?
“We need it for bait”
Oh, yeah, that makes sense
Why can't you use the Whiting for bait? Why does it have to be Mackerel? Maybe you should go to the market and buy some canned Mackerel.
Mackerel doesn’t show up very well on a fishfinder. You need to look movement on the surface.
Good to see you out without that old man holding your hands. Sorry, can't remember his name.
Also, thems is funny looking whiting! More like pollack.
Morrisons sell mackerel 😂😂
Never liked mackerel - years ago I lived for a while in a pub and the landlord would get handed mackerel by the local fisherman for pints over the bar - guess what I was eating for tea more times than you would want. Never eaten it since.
They are all on the east coast and fat ones too
Where have all the Mackerels gone,
What makes them hiding.
Where have all the Mackerels gone,
What happened here...
Sing-along 😂
Fish either side of boat, spread your chances better then fishing in each other's laos
