Stainless thread are notorious for shaking loose. High strength thread lock is a must-have. For removal, heat to 120 C (or a bit more) to soften the adhesive.

Beautiful anchor! I’d be worried about someone knocking it off! Glad your swivel has at least Allen screws to make it harder, but I’d prefer to use theft proof screws instead. They are cheap and worth every penny.

Nice bit of kit but you forgot the most important thing to do with new chain is to mark it of in 5 metre lengths so you know how much to let out dependent on the depth. This can be done with coloured cable ties, loops of coloured cord or paint. I would also put a safety line on the anchor to stop it falling if either the windless or linkage fails.

As the owner and restorer of an old galvanized steel fastened wooden boat that needs most of her structural bits replaced, I'd say that there's a lot wrong with galvanized steel. At least in marine applications. I use it all the time for other applications.

At £3000 + for the anchoring kit you demonstrated, (£2100 chain (@8mm) £650 anchor and £260 swivel) 10mm chain is circa £2600 …..it needs to be good and for most people that size of expenditure is just not viable for an anchor set up.
If I had been given the kit I think I would sing its praises………

  • @quarlow1215
    @quarlow1215 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So my question to you is when at anchor will you run out your chain and then sit on a rope bridle. Its not generally a good practice to hang off your windlass and is generally very noisy. As the boat pitches up and down it will bang away which is both annoying and hard on the equipment. Most people run out the chain and then attach a rope from both sides of the bow to a shackle that gets attached to the chain and then pay out some more chain till you are hanging on the bridle. But since its nice and new maybe your system allows for direct to windlass anchoring.
One thing I would suggest is to have a small scotchman bumper and a hundred feet of 1/4" line with a carabiner stored in the chain locker. If you ever get into a situation where you have to cut loose from your anchor, attach the carabiner to the anchor chain first so you can retrieve it later. We had this on the fishboat I was on and it came in handy one time. Our rope line was getting a bit frayed. I kept telling the captain we need to resplice it and he said it was fine gor now. I got in the habit of attaching the scotchman to the line which meant i had to recoil about fifty feet of 1/4" everytime we anchored. Well one morning we woke up drifting with a thousand dollars worth of anchor and chain laying on the bottom. Luckily we drifted away from the beach. We fished the day and then went back to the spot and easily retrieved the line thanks to the scotchman. Captain never said a word to me about it. It kept us from having to drag for the gear.

When you weigh anchor you may hear the chain creaking every time you move the ship in the winch. . How do you prevent this? The old chain had a nice rope with two loops attached to it. Attach a hook to one of the loops to hold the chain, similar to the hook they use on the chain they use to secure cargo. When you have put out enough chain, put the chain in the hook and the other loop around the bollard. Release some more chain so that the rope hangs tight and the chain hangs loose.
This way the rope catches any snags and the chain does not creak. If the rope breaks/comes loose, there is no problem.

great work guys - and to think in terms regarding the sad loss of the sailing boat off Sicily, please have some thoughts to getting some miniature breathers, possibly with an underwater torch connected to it,, to keep in the cabins, they can give you up to 15 minutes breathing time incase you are caught out - it's so tragic these people lost there lives, even more tragic when you think of the cost of a boat like that and a couple of simple devices can mean the difference between life saved and life lost

A wise mariner will also attach a long piece of cord neatly coiled with a tape securing it, securing a small fender to the end of the chain . You cut the tapes to release the coil and then cut the bitter end!! After you sacrifice your anchor and chain, you can go back and get it back, maybe with the help of a diver!!

Suggest you mark your chain before you use it. Its important to know the scope relative to the depth of water. Colour code is best. Also place a waring mark 5m before the bitter end so you dont overload your windlass. Try red yellow blue white green, there is a memorible phrase to help you know how much chain you have out. Use any measurement between your markings,😁

I would never choose for 316SS because I have had very bad experience with 316SS/water/chloride/air combinations and MIC bactery in the oil industry.
I'm anchoring a lot and my choice will be galvanised chain and anchor.
My choice anchor is Rocna already for 22 years and it never failed.
Since 3 years I also use this ultra flip swivel, perfect design and the anchor never came home wrong way around anymore..
Anyway, the best anchor is the anchor you trust and is the anchor you sleep well behind it.

My father said that pure British stainless steel was far better used in sea than galvanized especially on boats as we only used British Stainless and it never rusted unlike our neighbors German version . It is the same with Knives and forks British Sheffield lasted longer stayed sharp sad that no British Stainless is available anymore it is all this electronic heated melted steel; Just not the same as the original way of getting the Oxygen out of the steel using gas furnaces to me we have to go back to go forward for real Stainless steel as Electric Furnaces just does not produce real Stainless steel very sad indeed. Remember 316 is the new set mark for stainless quality but British real Stainless was a lot higher than that as used in off shore oil Riggs as they are still being used modern ones sadly do not last as long as American and Europe are finding out.
