    my take on the voron stuff, at least as far as the design:
    you can't open source things under a license that allows commercial usage, and then get upset when someone uses your open source work.

      You're right but that isn't what people had concerns about. Its that Sovol is actively using Voron branding to sell. They are well within their rights to commercialize like you said, but there its not as clear if they are allowed to use their naming. I know that Voron asked them to not use their branding. I also believe no one on the Voron team complained that it existed just the use of their name. If they just marketed it as a great corexy then there really isn't an issue, but when you market it as Voron but cheaper that's more questionable. I think its cool, I even own an Sv06 Plus because I think Sovol makes good value platforms that just need to be upgraded to be complete.

      @@802Garage I would disagree, between them tweeting using the voron name and the marketing stunt of the donation, they are trying to tie their printer to the Voron name. If you watch this video, they even talk about the use the Voron branding. Also their "release video" was a youtuber that they have sponsed for a while, release an exclusive first video, spending most of the time comparing it to a Voron. Again I think this is a cool, great value product, the marketing just seems questionable.

    comment on the injection molding, it is indeed a lot of engineering involved, its not easy to design for injection molding, you cant just take something that is 3D printable and magically make an injection molding die with it. Sovol clearly put some thought into the design for mass production.

    I gotta say, the SV 08 is tempting. Even if only because I love the look of Voron's machine, but I'm not really interested in spending something like 20-30 hours assembling one. If the Voron team released something similar, an easy to assemble Voron kit I could build in an hour, I would be sold.

    having built a voron 2.4, I agree that 2 bucks is about all they can afford to give to the project. It is a derivative work, and if they publish the CAD, I could even see it being reasonably modable. That Plastic bottom frame is the major weak point I worry about. One of the first things I'd probably do is replace the toolhead with something easier to mod.
    It's more complete than a lot of what creality puts out. It would benefit quite a bit from a look at the Voron 2.4s macros.

      @NathanBuildsRobots  หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      I think the voron community needs to think about what an ideal collaboration would look like, and post some guidelines with how they would like to, or not like to, work with companies.
      Agreed, from a strictly practical and legal perspective, there is nothing to complain about. But they are a sort of like a social movement, with their own dogma.

    • @bcuttytv
      @bcuttytv หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      the complaints have mainly come more from the perspective of voron as a whole is supposed to be an entirely diy with majority off the shelf parts with easy modification based on what you see fit. they don’t hate on the printer, they just want it to be known that it isn’t a voron 2.4 whatsoever, it’s the sovol sv08 flying gantry corexy 3d printer. don’t look at it like you’re buying a prebuilt voron is more of the main takeaway they’re trying to stress

    • @NathanBuildsRobots
      @NathanBuildsRobots  หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@bcuttytv Not comparing this to the 2.4 is like not comparing the K1C to the X1C, or the PRUSA Mini to the A1.
      Same reason coffee shops will open up right across the street from each other. It's easier to poach someone else's customers than to create your own scene.
      Calling it a 2.4 clone is probably the most accurate statement.
      The same form factor, same motion components, same underlying firmware, similar specs. And the open-source nature of the product is inviting people to create mods for it.
      I think this will recruit quite a few people into the Sovol ecosystem who may have otherwise built a voron. Hopefully it makes a situation where both gain popularity. But we'll have to see how it pans out.

    • @bcuttytv
      @bcuttytv หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@NathanBuildsRobots It definitely was designed as a 2.4 clone but due to how much the 2.4 can range design wise based on the end user’s specifications, they advise from the average consumer looking at it like that. those other comparisons you made make entire sense though but those are also all fully built machines not meant to differ in any way from one to the other so those are comparisons expected to have. If more flying gantry printers were on the market then they could compare against that but a 2.4 is all that’s really out so it’s an understandable comparison, but they’re trying to advise against it due to not being the same form of machine. Like comparing the Ender 3 V3 to an Enderwire, makes sense due to motion system but one has a lot more variables you can set than the other does in which they can be entirely different machines at the end of the day performance wise.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I think Sovol could have avoided much of the community grousing by honestly marketing the SV08 as a 3D printer for people who would like a Voron 2.4 but will not spend the time or money for the full custom experience. The SV08 isn't a mass produced Voron 2.4. It's a commercial printer designed to appeal to people who like the Voron 2.4 features. It's almost an 80/20 version of the Voron 2.4 - 80% of the features for a bit more than 20% of the price and way less than 20% of the build time.

Plus, Voron is open source. The whole point is anyone can use the design. Sovol is not claiming this is a Voron from anything I have seen. UPDATE 04/18/2024: SOVOL changed the page that the email link went to, and the price is now showing as $549.
    Sovol sent out marketing emails for the SV-08 yesterday, the day before their official announcements. The emails show that they selling this for $1,500, nowhere near the $500 to $1,000 that you are thinking.

      1500 would absolutely kill this project. Under 1k, fine, maybe, but over that, it's absolutely no. I'd rather build a voron or even buy a Troodon at that price.

    If you're remotely handy and slightly masochistic you should just build an LDO Voron for under like $1500 US and be able to replace anything when Sovol doesn't exist.
    Do NOT build a machine larger than 250 unless you know you need it. The Voron 350 is pretty big and difficult to move and I'm 6'3". My wingspan barley lets me precariously lift it. If I could do it again I'd prob do a 300 ro even a 250.
    IMO, stealing the design and marketing it is scammy as hell. I know that's not a word. I will never support a company like this.

      they didn't steal anything, that is not how it works and you totally missed the point.

      They didn’t steal anything, a voron is open source they don’t even have to give money back to them, but they are, the only thing they had to do was make it open source like a voron. If you think this is stealing then you should be mad about every 3-D printer company under the sun, making an i3 clone for the past decade

      This thing is relatively easy to lift since the aluminum extrusions are light.
      I don't know, they are using the design and community goodwill to sell stuff. Is that a crime? Probably not. Is it in bad taste? Sort of. Is some donation better than nothing? IDK, if the point of the donation is to announce it and provide good optics it seems disingenuine.
      It begs the question, what does the ideal collaboration with Voron Design look like?

      @@NathanBuildsRobots Most of "the community" is against it. They seem to feel threatened. Sorry but this is what more casual printer people want. And there is a HUGE difference between $1500 and under $600. Yes, under $600 is their acknowleged price point, with 2 levels of early bird buyers under $500 and more under $500. You can't buy many newly launched Klipper bedslingers this size for that. The closest thing mechanically I know of is the Phrozen Arco, also a flying gantry sort of voron with 300x300x350 build size for $849. That one has a $300 add on AMS and a $150 add on enclosure kit.

      @@NathanBuildsRobots It's just ridiculous to go after Sovol of all companies in this corner of the market. Voron Design have been collaborating frequently with LDO, who AFAIK have a regular donation set up, not a per-unit one. All the others might have gotten better, I ain't really up to date, but at least started out truly scummy. Subpar parts across the board (including fire hazards), the Troodons didn't even acknowledge being copies of Vorons, one of the major Voron kit sellers (the name escapes me at the moment) even tried to steal the trademark, and the Voron Design team isn't getting any money from any of them. By contrast, the Sovol SV08 is marketed as Voron-inspired, which acknowledges their work, while at the same time making clear that Voron Design aren't responsible for any specific quality issues with these machines, has actually received some distinct engineering work by Sovol, and is at least kicking back two bucks per sale. (Well, "trust, but verify," but given Sovol's open source track record, I see no reason to doubt them.)
      It seems rather clear to me that "the community" is simply upset that they're becoming less of an exclusive club. Modding my Enders (E5Pro & E2Pro) has probably been the most enjoyable part of my 3D-printing journey, and as such I very much still plan on building at least two Vorons (a moving gantry IDEX with ERCF and a moving bed toolchanger), but it's hard to put aside budgets for them, which makes the SV08 rather tempting.

    It really is my dream machine from even just one year ago. I would love to be able to just pull one whole Z drive assembly off my V2.4 and work on it outside the machine. The Voron 2.4 is very well designed but so integrated by neccessity because it uses commonly available parts. I have zero doubt it would look very different if they could have had custom parts made from the start.
    I'm sure if it is popular enough we will eventually see upgrades for it like aluminium motor, XY and idler mounts. Maybe drop in AWD and IDEX gantries? Then it just needs a Beacon and maybe a new toolhead.
