182) Tent Fail!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 ต.ค. 2023
- What a difference a week makes! It was Canadian Thanksgiving, and I decided, once again, to head up to my happy place, Algonquin Park, to enjoy some relaxation and rafting in the solitude and beauty of nature, which I love so much. When I left, the forecast predicted a possibility of some rain, and a nightly low of about 6°C. Boy, did that change! I brought along my beloved Canadian Tire, two-person youth Outbound tent. Big mistake! I still had a wonderful time, but the trip ended abruptly with a major tent fail. Come along for this snowy, leaky, fun adventure!
By the way, I did end up, throwing out the air mattress, but am salvaging the tent and keeping it as a fairweather favourite.

Same. And was curious about the tent failure.
Great video Christina! And thank you so much for the kind compliments and the shout-out.
I have some thoughts about what is happening with your tent. You mentioned in the video that you were not able to see a source for the water - no obvious hole and no little rivulet of water from (say) the leaking door seam to where your sleeping bag was. This leads me to believe that the incoming water was groundwater being forced up through the invisible pores in the floor fabric of your tent by hydrostatic pressure from below. When it rains a lot or in conditions of sudden heavy rain, the ground becomes saturated with moisture. Anything short of a rubber or plastic sheet will eventually allow water up through those tiny pores. Every tent floor has a porosity rating and cheaper tents can't hold out as many PSI (pounds per square inch of water) as higher quality tents can which have a higher PSI rating. The smoking gun here is that the wetness was forming UNDER your sleeping bag, not everywhere on the floor. Your own bodyweight in the sleeping bag was compressing that porous tent floor against the vaporous moisture in the ground and absorbing it up through the pores in the tent, wetting out your bag from below.
And I think you definitely made the right call bugging out when you did. At these temperatures, a leaky tent floor and wet sleeping bag would mean a very long cold, sleepless night and put your at risk of hypothermia. Had you been in a more remote location and unable to bug out, the alternative course of action would be to move the tent under your tarp, where the ground would have been comparatively dry.
Lastly, you don't need to throw away your tent or treat the tent to waterproof it; that won't help the ground moisture saturation problem. What I recommend you do is line the INSIDE of your tent with a thin, cheap, piece of plastic. The plastic sheet just needs to be about 6" longer all the way around than the interior floor of your tent so that the plastic will go up the walls, creating a waterproof bathtub. If you watch my video: "The Great Groundsheet Controversy", you'll see what I mean and why I always use an inner liner in my tents. And such plastic can be re-used over and over again, for years. You can buy it by the roll at Home Depot.
A belated happy Thanksgiving to you!
- Martin
I actually did this years ago when I was able to camp and backpack on a regular basis. I could only afford cheap tents and gear (I'm old now and still can't afford expensive, high quality gear lol) so I would always line the inside of my tent with a plastic sheet like a bathtub. I don't know where I learned that from but it worked like a charm! Good advice :)
This totally makes sense and rings true in relation to what I experienced; this definitely must have been what was happening! Thank you for the detailed explanation. Thankfully, I couldn’t bear to throw my beloved little Crappy Tire tent out. I will definitely use the method you suggested with it in the future. Question for you…would this ever happen with my Six Moons tent? I know it is made from a polyester silicone material and assume it wouldn’t but please let me know. YOU ARE THE BEST and thank you so much for contributing your wise thoughts on this issue, my friend! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
@@DorHBoomer Awesome! Thank you to you and to PineMartyn. I will definitely use this method and continue to use my beloved little Crappy Tire tent! Thank you for chiming in on this issue, Mister BTW! I have the best viewers! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
@@Womaninthewoods13
I'm so happy I could shed light on this for you. And yes, even a high-end tent with a floor material with a high PSI rating will eventually fail under sufficient hydrostatic pressure from ground moisture, so I always use my inner plastic liner even though I have a very high quality tent of my own.
Keep enjoying your "Crappy Tire" tent. :)
Cheers,
- Martin
@@DorHBoomer I agree with others here regarding water seeping up through tent floors.................and it always fascinates me that people will put down a ground sheet to protect them from water and then put the tent on top - even though we can see the ends of the ground sheet projecting out beyond the tent and in an ideal position to catch any rainwater and direct it under the tent where it can seep through the floor!!
Like others here I have always put down a ground sheet INSIDE the tent and stayed dry that way!

Hello Christina,
You don't have to throw your tent away and I can tell you how you can totally waterproof it, but you have to set it up on a nice clear sunshiny day. Where it's not going to rain all day into the next day.
You go to the store and you get yourself a can of Naptha and one tube of "clear" silicone caulk.
In a plastic bucket pour the Naptha into the bucket and squeeze out the entire tube of clear silicon caulk into the liquid.
Stir the liquid until all of the caulking has totally mixed in to the Naptha. It will have a syrupy texture.
Using a paint brush, you're going to start brushing all the seams, coating every inch of your tent with the liquid. Don't skimp on it. Make sure it totally saturates the area you are covering.
Since you said you didn't have a problem with the tent itself and just the seams then you can coat just the seams.
But you will definitely have a lot left over so coat the whole tent if you can, top to bottom.
Don't throw your plastic bucket away because when the liquid dries and hardens up, you can peel it off and discard it out of the bucket.
I've made tarps out of sheets using this liquid and they're totally waterproof.
Thank you so much, Rebecca, for trying to help! You rock! However, please read PineMartyn’s comment a little further down the comment list for a much easier and more effective solution that you may want to adopt yourself in lieu of what you have suggested here. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this method, though. And thank you for watching! Again, YOU ROCK! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
Your wake-up date stamp said DECEMBER 2023.
I usually wake up with the sun - but often can’t sleep the first night at a camp.
Your needed to seam seal your cute tent. I used to do it to my cheapy tent of long ago. Made all the difference when it rains.
Winter camping is tough to figure out.
Winter hiking is always fun - so keep on doing it. Yeah!
Yes, I think the snow confused my brain in what month it actually was, haha! Please read pinemartyn’s comment on this video regarding the moisture coming in from the bottom of the tent. But, yes, seam sealing would have fixed the leak by the door. Winter hiking is amazing! I will be doing lots this winter! And I will keep trying with winter camping, too. Thank you for watching and commenting, Michael. Have a wonderful day! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
One suggestion is the sleeping bag should be on top of the sleeping pad, which would help the sleeping bag from getting wet.
Plus with the cheaper tent it is good to seam seal all the seams as that could have been the source of the wetness
Putting the sleep pad underneath my sleeping bag, rather than in it, would have definitely provided a layer of protection from the moisture seeping up through the floor of the tent, yes. Normally, however, I do prefer to put my sleep pad in side of my sleeping bag, to prevent it from moving around or from me moving off of it. Yes, though, I could’ve definitely made an exception here, that’s for sure! 😊 The sleeping pad would have kept me away from the water but it wouldn’t have solved the problem of the water itself.
It was definitely not the seams, although there was a leak along the one seam, too. Please see PineMartyn’s comment to this video for what the issue was. Hydrostatic pressure through the tent floor.
Thank you for watching and commenting, Glen! New video out soon! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼

When I saw the heading on this video (tent fail) I thought that maybe your Six Moons Designs tent was the one that failed on you. Fortunately that wasn't the case. Maybe Canadian Tire will replace it with a new one? It's probably worth a try anyway. The rest of the adventure appeared to go pretty well considering. Great on pushing your limit, but you do not do it in an unwise or unsafe manner. Wow on the low temperature/water when using that tent (avoided potential hypothermia, etc.). Regarding your roughing it for winter hiking at AP, enduring harsh conditions makes one more appreciative of what they have (when at home and being able to enjoy controlled temperatures, better food, sleeping well, etc.). Thanks for sharing another adventure. I hope that you got some good food with friends or family for the holiday.
Hi, Larry! Great to hear from you, as always. The redbud trees are still in blossom (don't notice them along the roads and yards otherwise). Also, boating in that cold of weather...wow! Good on bringing the extra food for Thanksgiving! Hey, Chris! Well, I appreciate you checking out my content! Hopefully you’ll subscribe! Happy Sunday to you!! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
Hmm, it's hard to say what's going on here exactly. I've read the other comments and I'm not completely convinced what's happening here. If the tent floor is the failure, a ground sheet ought to help but ground sheets only work if they are completely under the tent. If the ground sheet is sticking out, it can catch the water and pull it under the tent floor. Also, the groundsheet could have lost it's edge on waterproofing. I have no idea how old these items are or what wear and tear they have.
Another possibility is that the moisture is coming from inside the house! Cheaper tents are not well known for ventilation. The moisture could be from your own breath dripping down inside the tent. Just sort of looking at that tent design, I don't see how moisture could really escape. Is there ventilation under that little top hat it has?
Why is your pad inside the sleeping bag? This really struck me. I've not seen that before... well, except for systems that do that on purpose (like zenbivy) but those usually don't have down on the bottom/floor part. If you had the pad on the floor and your bag on top, it would at least buy you an inch of water before getting wet itself.
As far as bugging out. Well, you do have a tarp over there... I probably would have either moved my sleep system under the tarp or moved the tarp in as your new floor in the tent. Still, if your stressing out and not having fun, go. I get it and have done it. Better safe (and warm) than sorry, always.
Wow, thank you for your very thoughtful and in-depth message, Mr. Garage Brewer. It warms my heart that you took the time to write such a message and are so keen to help.
The water was definitely coming in from the floor; that there is no doubt about. The tent actually has excellent ventilation, the top third of it being completely mesh. It’s one of the reasons that I love this tent so much and often use it without the fly at all. If you read PineMartyn’s comment, this is definitely what was happening. His account of what was happening rang very true with what I was experiencing, especially the part about the moisture only coming in directly under my sleeping bag where I was putting pressure on the tent floor and nowhere else.
You make a good point, though,. If I had kept my ground mat on the tent floor rather than inside my bag that definitely would have kept my sleeping bag much drier if not completely dry, depending on how much longer the rain lasted. I always sleep with my sleep mat inside my sleeping bag to prevent it from moving. If I were to ever run into this problem again (which I doubt I will, since I am now going to bring along a thin sheet of plastic to place inside on the tent floor, in addition to the footprint, which I place between the tent and the ground outside of the tent) I will definitely move my sleep pad to the outside of my bag for an extra barrier.
In this case, it was too late to salvage the trip as my sleeping bag had already become wet, and the forecast predicted temperatures to drop to freezing.
Additionally, yes, the footprint I use for this tent is not the perfect size and sticks out a bit, which I am normally not too worried about, or mindful of, but certainly will fold it to just a smidge smaller than my tent for the future after this experience. I knew that already, but clearly needed to have this experience to show me how important this step is, haha.
Thanks for watching and for your comment, my dear! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
first paragraph of tarp not extending past edge of tent is "spot on." I jumped back on the video from her minute 29 "wet is bad", but I should have read your comment first and saved me time.
Upvoted.
@@cliffontheroad Thanks, Cliff! I actually knew that the tent footprint should be smaller than the tent floor, and that its main purpose is to act as a barrier from rain. Initially, the forecast was only calling for like 30% chance of rain for a couple of hours and I foolishly banked on this. Lesson learned! If you scroll down and read PineMartyn’s comment to this video, it is extremely helpful in explaining what happened with my tent, which, by the way, I did not throw away and will use again. Thank you so much for giving me a chance, and I hope you’ll subscribe, Cliff. Have an amazing weekend! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼

The coating doesn't last forever. I haven't tried it yet but scotchgard is supposed to help. It is a spray and you would want to coat the seams too with another product meant for seams.
An earlier poster suggest a paint which sounds more heavy duty to me so probably would last longer tho I'm not sure.

Hello Miss Christina! Leaking up through the floor is rare when using a foot print. None of the foot print was sticking out past the sides of the tent letting water flow on top of the foot print and come up through the floor was it?? You made the right call packing up and heading back to your vehicle. until next time, take care and god bless

Have you considered buying a French army surplus tent? I own one and it's fairly small as its for a single soldier but it is quite well made and resistant to water.
Where could I find one? Do you have an online link?
Sorry for the bad trip. Was wondering if your ground cloth was hanging out from under the tent anywhere. Also even a proven tent needs to be seamsealed every year or two in my experience. The stitches dry out with temperature shifts and those tiny needle holes from the machine can seep or drip.I also spray Camp Dry or Snowseal on mine. Curious why you didn't put the tarp over your tent front and entrance?
Hiya, Randy! 😊
Seam sealing would definitely have helped that leak that I was experiencing from the seam near the tent door. I will look into resealing the seams of this tent, definitely.
I didn’t put my tarp over the tent because, as I explained in the video, I wanted a secondary dry area under which I could do my cooking, hang out, eat or “be outside“ during the rain. I also have an issue with needing to bring a shelter for my shelter. The fly of my tent worked just fine and no water was seeping in from the top of my tent, or through the fly.
If you read PineMartyn’s comment, the hydrostatic pressure causing water to sleep in only underneath by sleeping bag where I was putting my weight is actually an unavoidable problem that will happen with even the most expensive tents if the rain is intense and prolonged. As well, yes, I was lazy, when setting up the external ground mat, which, yes, was a bit longer than my actual tent. I should have folded it to size, and will obviously definitely do that in the future!
Nevertheless, I would not call this a bad trip. I still had more than 24 hours out in nature, relaxed and read way more than I ever manage to back in the city, and was able to enjoy two paddles on the lake. And I certainly learned a heck of a lot as a result of the tent fail, haha!
Thank you for watching, and for your comment, Randy. Have a wonderful week and I hope to “see you” in the next video! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼

Hellllllooooo, Nitemere! Welcome! And thank you for checking me out! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
Is this in Canada ?
Yes! Algonquin Park in Ontario. 🥰
@30:38 condensation!!!!
It’s not condensation, actually. It’s water seeping in through the tent floor’s fabric due to hydrostatic pressure, which explains why the moisture is only coming in directly underneath my sleeping bag, where I am putting weight on the fabric of the tent floor. Please read PineMartyn’s comment to this video which clearly explains what is happening here. Thanks again, Phantom Kangaroo, for giving my channel a chance! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
I feel 7ft tall watching this video :)
Oh, yeah? 😊 Why is that?
@@Womaninthewoods13 Camera angle. ;)
@@HarryTicke 😂😁
A suggestion: put canoe in tent and sleep in that.
It’s way too big to fit inside the tent. 😊
If you slightly deflated it?@@Womaninthewoods13
I’m here cause of Steve’s video. You got yourself a new subscriber

Wow. Some of us do things because we like to try new things and experience the elements that get thrown at us. You need to have a sense of adventure.
Bonjour Christina! First of all, Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to you!
I’m so glad you did not discard this vid, it’s all part of the learning experience and your resilience in all situations is truly inspiring.
Wondering why you did not just stick with the 6 Moons tent?
Love the Kari Traa longjohns! One of my new fav companies.
I also LOVE your singing, you need to include a little of that in every video.
You could always donate that tent to a youth group or something like that.
Thanks so much for sharing all these wonderful adventures with us WoodsWomenWatchers.
Au Revoir (< did I spell that correctly 😂)

I just love my little Crappy Tire tent and it is a bit bigger and I knew I’d be spending a lot of time in the tent so opted for it. Also, since I can’t bring this tent on longer backpacking trips, and just used my Six Moons tent for 47 days, wanted a change. LOVING MY NEW KARI TRAA LONGJOHNS! I was exclusive to SmartWool before but Kari Traa is so much more vibrant and colourful! I’m keeping the tent! Please read PineMartyn’s comment to this video for the solution that I will use with it in the future. Thank you for watching and commenting, my dear! Au revoir et belle fin de semaine! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
