Don’t forget to subscribe for more videos about CORNWALL and Falmouth I sometimes visit St Ives Cornwall and Padstow Cornwall too. Come here for everything from travel recommendations to beach reviews such as Perranporth Beach Cornwall. I also LOVE EXPLORING Cornwall’s coast line and the South West Coastal Path. Thank you for watching and commenting and liking the video.
That was a scary incounter especially when they rattled the door I'm very glad it wasn't worse than what it was but another amazing vid absolutely love your camping adventure.
It could’ve been a lot worse. I was tempted to press the button on the carbon monoxide alarm to scare them 😂
Install small little cctv camera's outside your van so you can see what's going on ?
Updated:
I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living.
I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc.
People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living.
I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself.
Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this.
I feel that you , and others TH-camrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful.
I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors.
I shared this with another traveler as I watched their TH-cam channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others.
Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience.
Although, you may have knowledge of this already,
I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone.
*Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle.
You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage
Do your research for the best fit for you
Carry Several Extra portable phone chargers, and cables.
Consider theses items:
*Mini portable power charging station.
I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices.
*Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell reception,
Research to see what you prefer.
*Very Inportant:
Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location.
There are various types of these devices, and including devices that can be used when boating or camping situations.
*Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders.
Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone.
You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS devices will be a good fit for you.
*Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger
*vehicle battery jumper cables
*Vehicle Jumper cables
*Keep a Fire extinguisher handy
*Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly.
Exterior vehicle cameras
Interior vehicle cameras
*Flashlights or pluggin spotlights
*Portable spotlights, and lanterns
Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console
*A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies.
Use your own discretion regarding the use of any weapons.
Don’t forget to bring
Bear Spray
Pepper spray
Where is allowed
Keep in contact with your family, friends etc.
Although, I just noticed your TH-cam channel, and other similar channels.
You seem Very Aware of your surroundings and Alert, and you may be aware of many of these suggestions, however, I Don’t know, so I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions.
Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions.
Keep your vehicle gas filled
Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty.
Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on.
Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors.
Keep Enjoying Yourself,
Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature
Just..Please continue to
Be Positive, Safe, and Alert..
Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All.

What he need is a metal tube 3/4” diameter that he can shoot a gun with blanks to the ground.
Yeah we are a scary, violent lot ere in Mousehole! Hah hah
This is why my bed in my stealth camper is intergrated into the drivers seat. I had some clowns try to break into through the moonroof, so I just fired up the chevy v8 and drove off at high speed, with them hanging on for dear life!!
that is hilarious...
That’s what they get… 😂🤣

GOOD for YOU!!! I’m from Louisiana and it’s a “stand your ground” state. I would have had my pew pew, if I was scared for my life! Glad you’re ok!!
Cool story bro 🙄
Im so glad you told us to be quiet....I was screaming so loud. Sorry!

Ex-police here. We see a lot of this, we call it trying doors. A lot of crims will try doors for the sake of it to see if it’s open. Happens with houses as well. Best advice is make yourself known with light or shout or make your van look “lived in”. They’re looking to steal work tools or in some cases just spare change or a handbag they can see. Often you won’t have issues as soon as you make yourself known, they’re nightmare is to see someone so just be hella obvious. Would also recommend a steering lock to prevent theft of the van and also adds as a nice deterrent. Parking somewhere remote with no neighbours or CCTV is also a problem, gives them full reign to try and nick anything that’s not glued down. Good luck and hope these tips help any van lifers. PS it’s never a serial killer tryna get into the van, that’s only in the movies 😂
Thanks for tips!
Oh Thank you Officer. I have slept in Police Station parking lots. I have a white cargo van so I slip in between their identical vans..😊 But they know I am there. Which makes me feel safe..❤
I lived in an apartment and people would do this. I had just moved out on my own and had a stranger walk in while I was sitting on the couch as soon as they saw me they acted like they had the wrong apartment. Thankfully that’s all that happened.
Of I need to leave quickly, A lock is a hinder, not a helper..
Set off your alarm. If I see anyone around my car I push my panic button. The alarm goes off and my lights start blinking.
I was in a caravan in north Tasmania where it started rocking went out to check if it was kids mucking up but couldn't see anyone. Went inside and the rocking started again, out I go again still nobody around.
While standing about the rocking started again. Looked under the van to find a wombat scratching his rump on the suspension. Never forget that one.
Ha please say this is true lol.
@@bensmith5231 it was in the Narawntapu National Park near Port Sorrel river in December 2011.
This exact thing happened to me too, was quite funny when I realised that it was a wombat, although was a bit freaky before I realised!
That's hilarious . Bloody wombats
Best comment!!!❤😆
Just watched your vid. I’m both van traveling and sailing my entire life and had some of these incidents. Some advice: bolt your doors from the inside when asleep, install led lights on the roof at four sides, which you can switch on from the bed (generally nightly visitors run when you flood them in light), keep a small axe (for campfire wood) and a fishing speer gun near the bed (both legal) in case it becomes nasty (even a bloke with a pistol doesn’t want to be speered and will flee) and don’t hide and keep silent. Start swearing with a loud voice and shout they have to run to hell, before you’ll get out and assist them in that direction. These kind of misfits are cowards and won’t know if you’re a midget or a regular giant karate expert.
Last advice: call some made up names of guys and yell like you’re waking them up and the outsiders will think you’re not alone in the van.
Never get frightened and enjoy your voyages, pal.
Great advise thank you
Good advice. Just recently brought a sailboat to live on. All advice I plan on taking.
BRILLIANT advice!
Fantastic advice!! Similar to if someone’s trying to break into your house. Start calling out names of other people even if you are alone.
You guys are the real MVPs
7:17 The way he was telling us to be quiet as though we were in there with him 😄❤
😂😂😂
Same thing when we turn the radio down to drive better😅
For your front doors (driver's door & passenger door) take your seat belts & thread them threw the door handles (for pulling a door shut) then clip it into the safety belt locking device. This secures the front doors. Unclip when you're ready to drive. My passenger door is always seat belted shut. Stay safe. 😊
Great advise thanks Molly
Super idea
Great idea!
Very good idea i never thought of that.
Love this thank you !
My dog is great for this - she rarely barks but is extremely loud when she does . If anyone even me taps on the van when all is quiet she will bark- which is a great first deterrent and give the person an option to move on before a potential conflict . The best thing is I sleep well knowing I have this early alarm dog system
yes I agree, all solo travelers should have a good big watch dog!
My dogs the same she'll bark before someone touches my door amd it's the only time she does. She's a great burglar alarm and she can get fiesty where I'm concerned.
A very important thing for van camping is: always put the van head towards the road or exit. In this way, once there is danger at midnight, you can start the engine immediately and escape.
Thanks Frank. Good advice.
Excellent idea! Also, observe what is the fastest way out of area. And remember what road was used to get in there. 🤔
Guns are great
Thank you!😊
@@ExplorationRandomDestinationshotguns are better😂
A tip we use in the states..loop your seatbelt through the inside door pull and locked in place. It will stop the door from being opened. And an air horn, the type used at sporting events. A long blast from that and they’ll take off running. Stay Safe!!
Yeah, definitely use an air horn in the enclosed space of your vehicle. Doctors say that's really good for your ears.
A better tip is a gun
@ThePrairieChronicles I would rather carry a gun illegally (to be safe traveling) and be judged by 12 rather than carried by 6
@@johnnyfive9660Better than losing your life!
@@carmenmyer8985I agree!!
Love how you shushed the camera to be quiet when they were trying to open the door, glad your safe!
Hahaha yeah it was funny.
He sure did, didn’t he.
Thank you for sharing your vulnerability. I often travel alone and it's affirming that others can get as easily rattled as I might.
I seen another clip from a woman in the states who showed her van how she made her van safe. She had small CCTV installed to cover 4 angles of her van. A spot light and panic alarm system.
@pojo1010 Absolutely!!! But apparently many of these folks commenting here are from places that have surrendered their rights to the government.
Not very discreet about illegally sleeping in your car.. Which he seemed very conscientious of
There is one woman’s video on TH-cam showing that she had a regular deadbolt lock installed on both front doors of her van. It’s one more level of security to slow down any burglar.
Any chance you remember the vid? I'd like to see that setup.
Put bolt locks on the inside of the doors and make a alarm that you can turn on inside the van so any intruders will walk away because of a alarm going off. Love this video as well keeping them coming
Good idea with the alarm switch!
When leaving your space - " Leave it clean, if not cleaner" - A man with the same belief as me. ;-)
Appreciate your message at the end.
I’ve read too many van/suv/car dweller who say they dump their tooth brushing/face washing, pee collection and or just pee in the bushes near their vehicle (gross). Not only is this totally unsanitary… but why would anyone want a van/suv/car dweller in their neighborhood if this is what they do? Disrespecting their environment and the neighborhoods they vehicle camp in.
I respect your conscientiousness!❤️
Sadly MaryAnn the people you talk of give us all a bad name and this is why people don’t like vans in their neighbourhood. Sometimes I even litter pick the area I’m staying in so it’s cleaner than when I arrived. Thanks for watching
LMFAO the locals here in UK always pee on bushes on the way back from pubs on nights out. What's your problem? Now, number two is a different story.
I don't see a problem with pissing in the bush tbh, as long as you don't shit snd leave toilet paper everywhere
@@tehdreamer ....ummm have you smelt urine?
@@jasonvoorhees7288 lol yes, i frequently pee in a bottle in the van since its convenient. Then dispose in a sewer drainage or toilet when parked near a home.
This was one of the largest problems with my experience with van life. I would spend hours riding around scoping out a safe place to spend the night. You're in a very vulnerable position if someone knows you're in the van and they are intent on harming or harassing you. From inside you have no idea where they are, how many of them there are or what their intent is. Every noise and bump wakes you up and you end up just lying there listening. I loved the traveling and visiting new places, now I do it using camping grounds or hotels. Living in a van was an adventure, but in the end was not worth the expense.
Peak through window, install CCTV cameras to monitor 360 degrees outside, shout loud and shine torch outside, get pepper spray, have a big axe/machete at hand, install deadlocks, alarm, smash proof window film, all this helps.
@Bruce Wayne LOL cat turds! 😹
There are some who have installed cameras outside their vans.
I agree. People seem to downplay this issue with van life, and I don't understand why. I was staying in a pretty "safe" (low crime) part of town, parking on side streets near empty lots or office buildings or similar places residents wouldn't take much notice. One night after parking, I got a really unsettled, unexplained feeling in my gut to move somewhere else. Nothing had happened, I just had a "bad feeling". This feeling happened shortly after laying down to sleep, so I actually had to convince myself it was worth getting out of bed to move for no reason aside from unexplained instinct.
Next day, I drove past my parking spot from the night before to discover someone had driven down that street and shot out all the windows of the cars parked overnight on that street. Not knowing I was on the other side of one of those windows, I likely would've been shot had I stayed.
That convinced me to ALWAYS follow my instincts from then on, no matter how illogical they seem at the time.
@@NorthernKitty WOW! Thank God he warned you!
The police will knock and announce police - knock with no sound is someone up to no good.
I guess someone up to no good already knows. What if they announce police but they are not?
You could attach outdoor cameras on the roof. They would act as a periscope where you could see all around while you’re in there!
Yes! I was thinking the same thing.
@@naomiwest9622 there’s motion sensors with receivers but they don’t light up. They beep on the receiver inside your home. There’s motion lights that light up but they don’t notify or record. Then there’s motion recording cameras that live stream from a wireless app to your phone. I’d want the latter so I could see what it was.
Ahoy, matey!! ;)
Hopefully with infrared for seeing in the dark
@@bletheringfool A motion sensor that activates the light would be good, if they make a combo.
Someone was trying to break my bicycle free from the back of my van. I woke right up, reached for my key fob and hit the panic button and let it rip for about 5 repetitions . They were gone instantly and never returned.
We truckers even at a truck stop or rest area get knocks in the middle of the night. Bad people, lot lizards or whatever. I don't answer and good luck to them if they break in.
What's a lot lizard?
I love the van life.
I’ve been doing it since I was a teenager in 90’s. I went to college, I got a few degrees, traveled the world and zigzaged the country in my van, before social media and before it became trendy. My van is a 2000 Roadtrek 170. I don’t vlog but I’m in my van right now.
I have an America The Beautiful park pass but I spend more time staying at Walmart more than anywhere else. I worked there for years. I’ve dealt with drunks, crackheads, meth tweakers, and other aholes. I’m 5ft, 2in tall and 130lbs so people see me as an easy target. They find out the hard way that I’m not. I do mma and I’m a legal gun carrier.
Plus my man travels with me now. He drives 18 wheelers. We spend a few years meeting up on trips. Now that we’re married, I’ve been on many trips with him in his truck.
@@candicemonique5927❤
It's a common tactic for crims to just walk along and try door handles till they find something unlocked, nick a few things and move on. if they realized you were in there they'd likely crap themselves.
On the one hand I can see the attraction of wanting to do the stealth thing as a kind of challenge of a way of beating the system but on the other hand I find it ridiculous that people are actively prevented from exercising their basic human right to freedom. As you said, the only stipulation is that you don't inconvenience others or leave anything behind.
I highly advise external cameras. They don't use much power, are cheap these days, are often easy to install and they REALLY come in handy when you're worried about what's happening outside around you. You may also consider exterior lights and an external intercom so you can ask, "what the hell do you want?" safely from inside. (Preferably after determining on camera that they don't have weapons in hand.) Suddenly flooded by Light and hearing a gruff, irritated voice over a speaker will scare off MOST who intended to break in.
But then he can’t pretend someone was breaking in hahhaa
@@queenpondue101 There are actually a lot of outdoor, 360 degree view, battery powered cameras that allow you to talk through them. I have 4 on my house, each side of the house.
I would add to this have a sensor that barks like a dog instead of security sounds,, or put magnet signs on the outside saying dog handlers,, just only put them on your van at night time,, at least then no one will even go near it because most dog handlers work at night time 😁😁
Security dog handlers 🐶
@@Ego-de4dt You sound fun.
This is why a solid hardwood Axe handle is a great travel companion, it will splinter the bones of hapless fools intent on breaking into your van like they were chalk
Mason, what do you do if they get the axe away from you? I have a rottie and 2 tazers. Someone else suggested a spear gun and he said they wee legal.
I don't understand why anyone would think that it's that you're eating your supper with such a beautiful view much better than a kitchen counter and a refrigerator Love you
Becareful put an alarm. People knocking at that hour are up to no good.
Thanks Lena 😊
I’m just curious, did you ask the other van parked there if they were disturbed during the night, or do you think it could have been them trying your door?
Little trick on those vans. If you click the lock button on the key twice (in quick succession) I'm pretty sure it activates your dead locks. Essentially if someone breaks the glass to get in they can't use the inside handle to open the door. Just keep your key close though (if you're in the van) as it would also prevent you from getting out without unlocking the doors with same key
Good advise thank you
L
Something like a .45 will prevent them from opening the door too!!!
100% my transit is the same. I always deadlock the van and it saved it from being stolen one night. Someone smashed the 1/4 window on the drivers side and tried to open the door from the inside but couldn’t (due to the double click deadlock) I’ve also fitted manual key deadlocks as an extra measure, that’s the real fail safe
On my suv, if I double click the lock, it engages the security alarm. So if they try to open the door, the alarm goes off and the lights flash. I'm going to check to see if it keeps the lock engaged, too. Thanks for thar tip.
The late night knocking might have been someone confusing your white van for the other white van parked directly behind you, which would account for the quiet knocking & attempt to get in, then leaving you alone when no one answered. Anyway, sorry for the scare and glad you’re ok.
That's a good point especially if they had a beer or two
I've certainly done that innocently before.
Oh lord, I did this at someone else’s rig after heading out to the bathroom once. I tried repeatedly to get in thinking it was my rig, Fortunately, they were not inside or just ignored me. Whew. Glad you were ok.
I thought the same, looked very similar to the van that was down the road, if it was still there? I’ve tried to get into identical vehicles to mine in broad daylight and stone cold sober 😂
@@kristiblack4789 I was sat in my car waiting for my missus to leave Matalan, I watched this greasy fat bloke waddle to the burger stand then jump into my passenger seat. Basic rule of camping, regardless of how you do it: if possible, leave it better than you found it.
We camp everywhere in a 1971 restored VW poptop camper. A month ago, we stayed at Grayland State Park in Washington state. It's by the beach and a well used, developed campsite. We felt safe. At 3am, someone knocked at our driver's side window. My husband and I laid low, barely breathing. We didn't turn on the lights and we certainly did not ask who was there. If we heard them try the doors, our plan was to start the engine, turn on the headlights and honk the horn. It works with bears (we've encountered) and it certainly alerts nearby campers. We didn't sleep the rest of the night. The park ranger told us the next morning that they get street people from town wandering in. Still, it ruined the night and scared us. If this happens to you, remember to keep your keys in the ignition and whatever you do, do NOT answer the knock on the door by opening it up.
Good advise 😊
@@mickaelalynngregorypipes I'm not aware that ''this happens alot.'' But we joke that even if someone did get hold of the keys, they couldn't drive the 1971 VW bus. First, it's a stick and sometimes very tricky to get into gear. So, no fast get-aways. Then of course, it stalls. And it has no power whatsoever going up hills. We could be left behind laughing watching the amateur trying to steal our car. So, no, we will still keep our keys in the ignition when we sleep so to honk the horn, flash the lights. It worked for us when we by a black bear in Yosemite.
I've stayed there many times over the years by myself. But never had that happen. That's terrifying! Haven't been back for a few years, but it is a beautiful place!
I think if a perp hears a man’s voice inside and he sounds serious, the perp will run off.
That would’ve sent my rotties thru the roof. Glad you’re ok
I like your no nonsense simplicity and especially advice for leaving it cleaner than you found it. Also, you did not panic when someone knocked. Gratefully, no one caused you difficulty. You have to be brave hearted and cautious do camp like this. As a full-fledged admitted "chicken" , I could never do it. Happy, safe travels.
Me either. At 73 a confirmed chicken 🐓
Once you convince yourself you can’t do something, you can’t. But once you try, you surprise yourself with how much you can actually do. Never let anyone tell you that you CAN’T. I used to be afraid of almost everything, until finally realizing that my whole life was clouded by fear. That’s when I got mad-at myself for having allowed it to happen. Try taking a self-defense class. Mine was offered for women at a local college and run by the police. They taught us to shout loudly and aggressively-both are traditionally ‘unlady-like’ things to do, right? So what! The sound of my own voice yelling with strength helped make me FEEL STRONGER! It really helps. Try it! 😎
What you need (and I’ve seen this before,so I can’t take credit) is a sign 24hrs pest control, and a heap of Hazmat stickers, with warning ⚠️ “trace biochemical agents maybe on the exterior of this vehicle, full PPE equipment required” and Decontamination Instruction. Etc etc.. trust me not even Authorities will go near your van. As i say I’ve seen this before and I know it works, and the van is even expected to be near closed shops/ Restaurants etc ect, Because they treat companies at night, 24/7.
That’s a good idea. I was thinking of getting some sign writing on the van saying it’s a toilet cleaning company because no one would want to break in to a van that has poo in it
@@LoveSundays yeah, i think pest control is better, they seriously wont want to even get close, there is just nothing that’s potentially toxic anybody wants to get close to, an old respiratory, high vis jacket and pair of gloves on the passenger seat? I’m giving you extra room. 😂
👍

You don't realize how precious you are. I pray you are always safe and successful.!
I see something many of these "scary" situations from van life, camping/hiking in general all over youtube. The one thing they all have in common, none of them are armed with any self defense tools to protect their life and property.
My wife and I can sympathize with you. We've been stealth camping since 2013 and have had our share of "knocks" on the door. We have a Chevy Express white van that we've outfitted and it works great for us. But when a "knock" comes in the night, we don't utter a sound …unless the knocker identifies themself as "Police." But every encounter after we open the door and the police are there, has been just fine. One policeman told us where we could park for the remainder of the night and not be disturbed. We tried to follow his directions but couldn't find the place he spoke of so we just backtracked about six miles to where we were the night before and finished our night experience there.
We had one encounter where we stopped to fix our dinner in St. Louis in a picnic area. When we took our stuff back to the van after dinner, we saw a man sitting in the passenger seat who then saw us and got away with our computers. We've vowed NEVER to go back to that park in St. Louis. (No, the doors were locked - but he broke the passenger door lock). One never knows, but the incident was a one-off matter since 2013.
St. Louis seems to be the place to have something stolen while visiting.
Years ago my family had two hubcaps stolen in the Gateway Arch parking lot.
what park in st. louis?
It really be the nerve of fucking peopel . These type of people need to get sent to hell as soon as their spotted doing a crime . Shit is scary and annoying having to always protect
St Louis is a great city that supports crime!
I know you and your wife. You guys are horrible people. The worst people I've ever met.
I've had people come to the van a few times over the years when I've pulled in for a night in a lay-by or on the edge of an industrial estate. I usually travel with my Labrador; if she hears someone approaching she grunts just loud enough to get my attention, but if someone touches a handle she sounds off like a pack of hounds! Great to see you practicing and promoting #leavenotrace - thank you!
I don't travel in a van but I do find it appealing. I do know I would never begin to travel alone without a big dog traveling with me. Other than being sweet and loyal, they are the best protection and guard you with their life.
I haven't travelled in a van around the UK but here in Aus., I make sure that I cook away from where I need to stealth-camp. That also helps to make your arrival and departure from your chosen spot much more discrete.
My first thought too

That was really scary at 2am! I think that alarm that you can activate from inside that was suggested by Bunny Basher is a really good idea,
Yea I need to up my game on the security side
As a full time van-dweller, I appreciate the advocation of "leave no trace"!
Did you mean “admonition”? I’m with you on leaving no trace. One lady who was nearly burgled in her van at night had deadbolts installed but she had not remembered to lock them. When she heard the burglar trying to break in, she jumped up, engaged the deadbolt on that door, then grabbed her ignition key and started the engine. The guy wouldn’t give up so easy, so he jumped up on the hood of her van as she roared off, clinging for dear life, but when she made a turn, he went flying off into the wild blue yonder! I guess that means there was no trace left. . . I always love a happy ending! 😁
It sounds like they are dumping their pee everywhere from the videos I've watched.
went to your parking area in January. lovely spot. bit chilly but great to wake up and open the door and see the view. get a dash cam with reverse camera. plug into a portable power source and use magnet to put reverse camera on the outside of the van somewhere then you will have some comfort knowing what is going on outside. that is how i started. now i have progressed to all round cctv that i just plonk on when i park up and put back in when i leave location. get a cheap hard drive and small monitor setup in the back of the van and a portable power source. think outside of the box. you will be safer. its the not knowing that gets you paranoid......
Thank you for the tips Peter much appreciated
I been living full-time for 4 years, in my RV class C, as a senior. I have a small malty poo, for company. But my son, that works in security, has me well armed. With pepper spray, 8 inch camping knife and bear and wasp sprays. He just order a flashligh with a taizor, for my 70th birthday this week, that looks like a normal flashligh. I have been on the road for slmost 4 years and thank God I have never had to use any of that. Only once I told a homeless man to go away. Using my meanest bossy angry mom voice and the guy apologized and quickly left. God is my best protector😇, but if he is busy, I'm armed and ready 🙂😁.

A loud bullhorn, an alarm of a dog barking (human beings seem to be very scared of a loud, barking dog) or bright security/sensor lights on the top of roof that come on before they get to your vehicle door just like the security lights at a house.
I had this happen when homeless I was sleeping in my van and someone tried (hard) to open the door. I let it go for a sec and then found my gun and yelled out that if they do that again I’m going to shoot them. After about an hour without sleep I had to get out of there and drove to a new location. One of the scarier moments in life.

Hey i just watched another video of a person stealth camping and they had the same experience only this time some sicko's ziptied their side door of their van together in the night (front left passenger door handle zipped tied to left side slidingdoor handle), they were lucky to not have had double rear door handles or otherwise they would be able to ziptie those together and they would be stuck, luckily they could maybe gotten out of the front since they had straight cab access from the back. Hope this info helps in prevention and safer van camping in the future!
Here in Texas we just holler out, “Honey!? Hand me my shotgun…….Thanks Hon.”😉
Works even if you don’t have one.😆

Bro u need to have a small nite vision camera on each side of the van. So u can see them with out them knowing your watching them.
OMG that knocking scared the crap out me and im here in the safety of my house-! That’s so nervewracking. I give you so much credit- I would be so afraid at night to be sleeping in the back where you can’t even see what’s going on. You ought to get a cheap little camera to stick in the front so at least you can see what’s happening outside the van while you’re in the back-!!

Hi mate glad your attempted entry turned out OK I have had a few of those over the years the last one was this year at around 3.00am when the Ute shook followed immediately by a knock. I sat up looked out but the condensation prevented seeing out so I opened the windows slightly to see a Policewoman and Policeman standing there. I said hi. The Policewoman said what are you doing here? I said well up to you shaking and knocking on the Ute I was sound asleep. They both laughed asked me a couple of questions which I answered then gave them my name and I said oh I guess you already know my name which they said yes we know your name. A check on the vehicle plates had told them. They bid me farewell after I thanked them for checking on my welfare. I was tucked away almost invisible to passers-by on crown land. I will be putting lights/cameras on the exterior so that I can view the outside in situations. Regards Johnno in Australia.
That’s nice that they were just checking in on you. I used to live camping in my van when I was travelling Aus back in 2011. That’s a fine country you have there mate

If it helps anyone else or makes them feel safer just do what I do, I have a cordless angle grinder with a saw blade attached, can't imagine there is a single person that wouldn't pucker up at the sight then sound of it.
Experience this a few times when I worked as a long distance truck driver.. a good blast on the horn normally got them running! Lol
An old driver told me the best thing you can carry is a pot of pepper and if they come into the cab throw that in the faces of the bastards..
Years back in the continent they were using ethanol or easy start to spray into the air vents which would knock the driver out, next thing the driver knew was when he would wake up with a banging head ache and his load whipped!
The thing I love about people who live in vehicles is that other than sleeping and driving, they are out in nature and that is so good for the soul and your well being. When you live in a house, you don’t tend to get out as much. I’m surprised there wasn’t a picnic table somewhere. Love your roof top deck. The person trying to get in may have been homeless. I wonder if the other van experienced the same thing. It was smart you didn’t leave the van.
I feel more peaceful and calm now that I’m sleeping in my car. I even took a “break” and got an apartment for 8 months- was so miserable I broke my lease and went right back into my car lol

You need to rig an alarm up in the van that you can trigger from the inside so people messing will think they set the alarm off & do 1. Another great adventure though Shaun.
That’s a great idea mate

Isn’t there a panic alarm on the key fob?
Thank you Helen Brown that’s very kind but I’ve sorted something now
Um what was wrong with the panic button on your key fob?
You are so right. Be careful. I’m praying for campers. You did the right thing staying still. It’s a shame, but sometimes it’s someone needing help and is homeless looking for food. I’m glad you’re ok.
No. Making a LOT of noise is better. Calling out a man’s name, as if you aren’t alone is better, too. Taking control of your actions and not letting the would-be burglar control you is better! Cowering in the dark and waiting for harm to come get you is wrong!
A couple I know were asleep in their customized van in downtown Nashville after a night of pub crawling. Suddenly, someone took a brick, threw it through the drivers window, and an arm reached inside to undo the door lock. Within a few seconds he was met with a hail of bullets from my still groggy friend's .38. It was never determined exactly how seriously the fool was injured, though there was a trail of blood spots that led up the sidewalk. The side of his van wore those silicone covered bullet holes like a badge of honor for as long as he owned it.
This comment did make me laugh. Whilst I’m sure that wasn’t a nice experience for your friend, a person minding their own business camping in Cornwall would no well in hell have a gun. Guns aren’t a thing unless you’re a farmer! Two different worlds. Thankfully

The world is a mad place, when you worry about simply sleeping in your van for the night, minding your own business and all. For many people now, living in their vans is a way of life. (I live in Australia, so at least, especially when one gets to remote areas, camping can be free, authorities providing free toilets, showers, bbqs, and by pristine rivers etc as a way of encouraging travellers to support the local businesses, which can prove great value, Nearer the Coast, yes - restrictions can be applied. Safe travels. I have also thought of the idea of having an external camera mounted outside of van to see who is outside from the safety of your van, in that event. Cheers and safe travels!
Thank you Anne
I have had people stand really close to my van at night or early morning to intimidate me - once I was stealthy parked in a park and ride trying to wait out a huge traffic jam and woke up to a crazy couple having a knock down drag out screaming match right next me! Talk about my heart thumping! They didnt know I was there next to their car when they pulled in and I literally thought they were going to break into my vehicle they was acting so insane, shouting, cursing. I love the cheap travel but I could never get a good nights sleep- sleeping with one eye open.
It sounded like someone trying to break in. Scary!
You should have a security camera on the outside of your van.
This may be of interest to you. My friend lives on a rough(ish) estate. For yrs he parked his van on the street every night because he had nowhere else to park it. Every week half the cars/vans on the street got their window smashed in. It was a nightmare. Police were no help and one home owner even got prosecuted for throwing a baseball bat at someone who smashed his car window for supposedly beyond reasonable force etc....... Anyways one day my friends brother came round with some huge car stickers that said "Dorset Dog Rescue" and had a huge pic of a cartoon puppy with big eyes. He put them on the sides and on the doors. Whilst all his neighbours vans and cars continued to get smashed his van never got smashed again. The idea was that the kids doing the smashing would feel guilty due to it being a van that rescues puppies and it worked. Just thought I would share to give you an idea.
it might also lower peoples suspicion of your van when they see it if they think it has a reason to be there.
I'm a car camper and some lads tried my passenger door handle at around midnight one night. I held my breath and they muttered and moved on. I stayed put and managed to get back to sleep. Scary indeed.
It is really scary when I happens isn’t it. And then the next day you think to yourself maybe I should’ve got out of the van to scare them off. You never know what they could have on them though
Happened to me by couple no gooders. I was pissed and banged on the window scaring them away at that point got out of my car watching them drive away🤬
@@bencuraza6503 Hahaha, they probably thought the van was haunted by a poltergeist.😂
Having someone checking if there's someone inside without speaking is so scarry. I don't know what they wanted or what was their intentions. Someone who just try to steal something wouldn't probably knock on the door...
People often approach me when I travel with my bicycle and tent, but I never had a bad experience. When I'm near a house I usually approach the people living there if I see them, to explain that I'm traveling and I will be on my way in the morning. Some of them even invited me to stay in their property and/or come eat with them. I once left with half a homemade ham in my panniers after eating with a very generous couple :D
There's nothing worse than having someone lurking around the place where you sleep without knowing its intentions. Because then your imagination fills the blanks and it's usually making up the worst scenarios.
@@sheri4673 You can always try to talk to them instead of going straight to plan B.
I traveled with a bike and a tent, so I was much more vulnerable. Most of the people I met were very friendly.
When I camped near houses, I tried to talk to people to explain that I was traveling and would be gone in the morning. Many of them offered me to eat with them and/or sleep on their property.
One guy wanted to take me to my destination in his pickup truck. I came to ask him where the campground was and he told me they were a-holes and I could sleep in his guesthouse instead. I helped him with some internet issues, we ate and drank for two days, talking about life and impressionism. When his wife explained that I didn't want to travel by car, he wouldn't let me leave without half a cured ham in my saddles.
I had a bad encounter with a drunk guy, who yelled and threatened me before his friend took him away.
You never know what people want, that's why you have to talk to them. If someone checks before they try to steal, talking will probably make them leave.
If you always start by assuming the worst and are afraid of people, you probably won't have a good experience.
@@IronFreee I appreciate your point of view. If those type of random experiences are what one is looking for then your approach makes sense. A knock on the van in the middle of the night too often means trouble, I' ll always aim for safety first. If I want to make acquaintances on my journey, I'll choose who I will approach rather than the other way around. But I admire your open welcoming attitude- happy travels!
@@sheri4673 I agree with you: at 2AM it's more probable that they are cops, drunk people messing around or delinquents rather than people bringing you croissants.
I'm not saying that you should make friend with people knocking at your door in the middle of the night or putting yourself in danger by opening the door.
But at this point you won't increase the danger by asking them what they want and, if they don't answer, telling them that you will call the police if they don't leave now. They are already at your door, so talking can only help to put an end to the situation without hurting anyone.
@@IronFreee I wouldn't really be interested in what they want, most likely food, money, drugs. I'd talk to them thru the window or door, but wouldn't open door, unless I was armed with hand gun. I don't trust people, you shouldn't either. There are some good people too, but there's Alot of bad people as well😂👍
@@Felix-rz5yu "most likely food, money, drugs"
Of course, the streets are full of people who want to rob you of your food, your money, your drugs, and the only thing that can prevent this is a handgun.
It's well known that the best way to get these things is to go in a vehicle that's not commonly used or, better yet, with someone inside.
Why would you knock on the door of a vehicle if you needed any of these things? Do you leave drug, money and food in your car? And if you don't, why do you think others would?
I doubt you'd even sleep in a vehicle. You're probably too scared to get out of your car in daylight or even your home. But your mom taught you well: you can't talk to strangers, or they'll take all that crack she gives you every morning.
Definitely wasn’t a break in. I’ve had multiple vans broken in to and it takes them seconds. They definitely don’t knock first 😂

25 years ago when it wasn't such a name of stealth camping my friend who was from Germany and I took a overnight break at I think it was called pier 4 in Toronto. I've had a Volkswagen van with the kitchen in the back. We toured downtown to and when we came back to sleep I said my feet hurt from walking so he proceeded to warm up water in the back of the van to male me a foot bath. And remember it was back then public parking . And our vehicle was a normal vehicle not a rv. The security came to tell us we couldn't camp there's a Koa for camping but we're literally had a rush destination we had to be at bath for a specic time so this little detour wasn't a planned thing. My German friend Thomas even tho here he was an high school English teacher kept talking in German to the guy. The security guy kept repeating himself and Thomas kept answering him in German. Speakain the duetch the security guard got so flustered he said well just leave by morning . But really he if we really didn't speak English which he really believed was just saying that out loud to himself so he could confirm to himself he did his duty. I was killing myself laughing . And used the same technique borrowed from my German friend to do numerous things . Like get in the front of a line to go to a porty potty at concerts . People get pissed but what can they be pissed at anyway. U just act innocent and pretend u don't understand what the heck they're saying. I got a few good laughs out of that technique. LEAVE NO TRACE, is the best advice! I try to do the same in Canada when using my class c.
This may sound crazy, but your best bet in that situation is to scare them off by making a lot of noise and getting out the van. By staying silent and hiding, you are giving them chance to come back.
We had a similar incident in Belgium, and I chased 4 guys away from our van in my pants. I would'nt have done anything even if I had caught them, and I am sure if they want to, they could have easily fought me and won. But just my presence and demeaner was enough to make them flea.
1. It might have been a local who doesn't like roadside overnight stayers, and was trying to intimidate you
2. Or it could of been the police after receiving a report from the "above downer".
But that was a very quiet knock, so I think that they were probably more scared than what you were 😁
Be Safe and Enjoy
1) I don't like some things other people do, but if its legal, I don't get involved or harass them
2) Police don't quietly knock, they announce themselves while knocking, and they don't just leave without making contact
If you drive away from the police here, you just might the pew pew.
