250) More Winter Camping & Hiking!
On Friday, January 24th, 2025, straight after work, I headed up to my happy place., Algonquin Park. I arrived to Mew Lake Campground, spot number 93, at about 8 PM and hunkered down for the night. The next morning, after preparing coffee and breakfast, I hiked the longest of the 15 day hikes on the Highway 60 Corridor of Algonquin Park, Centennial Ridges, spanning 14 kilometres. The trail is actually only 10 kilometres, however there is a 2 kilometre hike in to get to the trailhead and thus another 2 kilometre hike out. I had forgotten about the extra distance and was therefore racing against the clock to finish the hike before sundown. Afterward, I prepared a delicious dinner and hung out in the hot tent for hours. The next morning, after coffee and breakfast again, I hiked the second longest of the 15 day hikes, Mizzy Lake. The thick snow cover made the scenery on both trailsbreathtaking. At night, temperatures dipped as low as -23°C, but I stayed nice and warm in my travelling tent (my converted Chevrolet Spark) with the help of my Mr. Heater Buddy and by snuggling up with Mr. Moose. Join me for another frigid and spectacular hiking and camping adventure!

The water has that same pale blue like the Ouachita's. Fire can be achieved with wet wood, but it's sometimes more work than it's worth. Especially when you're exhausted. I'm kind of curious what you think of your offset tarp. They're lightweight but do you feel like it gives you enough coverage?
@@garagebrewer Hi, Phil! I’ve used that hammock tent with the asymmetrical fly for years and years and years, though all kinds of rain and storms, I’ve not once had any issue! I’m excited to watch your hot tent video! 😊✌🏼
Hi Christina Indeed very beautiful freshly fallen snow. Dursty! Fresh snow to the rescue Oh girl; left your keys behind. Glad the bears are in hibernation. Merry Christmas, belated 5 years! This was a pretty fun video. You're definitely getting more relaxed on the trail. I liked how this one was edited too. @@Womaninthewoods13 there was a comment you were making about 30 minutes in, about if you had a friend on the trip with you, you would always have them on camera with you. whereas, most of the winter camping videos out there have some element of flim-flammery. from pretentious gear, through to plans that don't involve any actual hiking or tripping, up to and including a second person who is never shown to the viewer. meanwhile i'm watching your video and not seeing anything like that. it's pretty authentic. outbound gear from canadian tire being just one example... you'll just never ever see that on youtube! and then after that, the examples continue. thanks and keep up the great work!

In my previous experience, I often got green wood from the self-serve. I see they also sell kindling now, which would be a big help in getting green wood to start, but the last time I was at mew lake (some years ago now) there was no kindling and i couldn't get that wood to burn with the bits i could scrounge. So if you paid extra in huntville, almost certainly you didn't waste your money, probably even came out ahead.

Just got back from Mew Lake after a beautiful sunny Sunday, and after meeting you this weekend decided to check out a video. Was confused until I realized this video isn't from this weekend but the weekend before 🙂. Anyway, looking forward to checking it out, it was soo good to meet you and hope you found your Moose on Mizzy!
@@sbirnstiel Hey, Britney and Curtis! (Did I spell those correctly?) So awesome to meet you both! I admire you guys for knowing it is worth the long drive, even for a day trip. I was so impressed when I heard that you two drove up just for the day! Haha. I never saw a moose…omg, did you guys see one!?
@Womaninthewoods13 Should have left my name, it's Susanne with the Nepali Hoodie, one of the other couples you met 😀
@@sbirnstiel Hahaha, sorry, Susanne! I met a couple on the trail and we were talking about moose, too. Thank you for clarifying and great to hear from you! Did you and Tom end up doing the Mizzy Lake trail?
Hi! I'm your newest subscriber! 😊Just wondering if you have any tips for not being scared of bears? I solo hike everywhere except for where there are bears but I am trying to get over my fear.
Bring a whistle and bear spray, stay alert, and just go. You are afraid because you don’t have the experience of being out there (in bear territory). The more you’re out where bears are, the more comfortable you will be. I’ve never seen a bear. Make noise as you walk. You’ll likely never see one, either! I hope that helps! 🥰🥾🥾🫶🏻✌🏼
@Womaninthewoods13 you are right! I have to just go to get more comfortable. I have a refery whistle with the ball inside, bear spray, and I've hung my keys off of my pants before. And I shout or yell something or sing or play music on my phone but never wear headphones. And yes, I'm always alert looking 👀 everywhere. I would feel more comfortable if there are other people in the area in bear country too. Because I went to one bear area and I was the only one there and I chickened out. I think I'm going to start with Gatineau Park because Gatineau always has people. In fact, it's the second most visited parks in all of Canada. Then I will venture off into more remote bear areas. I used to always hike with a dog too but I don't have a dog right now. Huskies and German Sheppherds are good guard dogs. Thanks for the advice and great videos :)
@ My absolute pleasure! Please keep me posted on your progress! Also, I am coming to Ottawa on April 5th promoting my two books. I hope you can make it! I’d love to meet you! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼
So happy you posted about the warning tent! I was wondering if it was always available like that.
Yes, the warning tent is always there in winter. At this campground. Next weekend, I am going somewhere else where I don’t think there will be one…but who knows! ❄️❄️🥰🥾🥾🫶🏻✌🏼
5:27 the deer was cool. It's strange looking back at all the Covid signs 4 years later. Cheers! 🍷
Hiker video confessional! 😂 Love it! That park is epic anytime of year it seems!
@@bigcat880 Monsieur Grand Chat! Ça va? I always look forward to your hello! By the way, where are you located again? USA, I think?
@ Yes in USA, Vermont! Basically southern Quebec 😊
Long time no see.🎉
@@agtyu I’m baaaaaaaaaaaack! 😉
Re: Mr Heater Buddy, my understanding is that it has a low oxygen sensor, not a carbon monoxide detector. It shuts off when it detects a low oxygen situation.
@@Atlanta_Cyclist I think you’re right. It amounts to the same thing, pretty much, in the end, I think.
I don't think you needed the bear spray and that was a squirrel not a chipmunk.but that was a very nice video. My wife has camped there, but i never have.
@@herb1553 I don’t think I need the bear spray, either. But better safe than sorry. Also, it’s for intruders “on four legs or two.” Just a smart thing to always have. You start taking it out of the pack and then you forget to put it in when you actually need it. ❄️❄️🥰❄️❄️
My theory is that the pylons are to keep snow out of the fire pits. 31:34 is hilarious, "there are neighbors gasping?", lol. I like the idea of the prepared pots of food, I've never thought of that. Snow hiking was beautiful too. I'm glad to see people getting out, even if it's cold ❄️. Cheers!
@@garagebrewer Haha, well if it’s to keep the snow out, the method is failing miserably! I think it’s just to locate them under all the snow! Ooooohhh, I’m thrilled that you’d never thought of doing prepared pots of food! It really worked out well and I did it again this past weekend. Talk to you again soon, Phil! ❄️❄️😊❄️❄️
Great video and awesome snow I’m so jealous down here in Tx. Thanks for taking us along!
@@JasonSnailer Hello, Jason from Texas! Have you ever done the Lone Star Hiking Trail?
