I am 64. I was 20 when I walked into a 7 eleven store. This song had just started on the radio inside the store. I stopped dead in my tracks and listened to the whole song. Captivated and stunned by what I just heard. The song was released on the radio the same day I heard it. Still to this day it brings chills when I hear it. NUFF SAID
Agreed! Bought it in Jan 1981. & This song is the perfect definition of 'Timeless Classic'. To say I've heard "In The Air Tonight" over 1,000 times in the last 40 years is a gross understatement. & This damn video still gives me goosebumps, every time I watch it. It-Never-Ends! & That my friends, is the very definition of ... Timeless.
When I was 22 was having an absolute terrible day. I was at the DMV with my 6mo old son and the lady sitting across from me heard me singing a Phil Collins song from Lion King to my son quietly. She asked if I had plans for the evening. I said no, so she gave me BOX SEATS to PHIL COLLINS! The concert was that night in town, and it was a private box. It was SO amazing. I took my son bc we were in the box. So that is the story of how my son's first concert was Phil Collins at 6 mos old. My son is 18 now, and Phil Collins is one of his favorites.
Ummm… Phil Collins didn’t write the music for The Lion King, Elton John did. Did you mean to say Tarzan? Phil Collins wrote the music for that and Brother Bear.
From a 56 year old english white male I give you respect brother. It's beautiful watching your response to something old but new to you. Enjoy the journey
Every drummer watching had the biggest troll face when he said "This is the best song without drums I've ever heard". Because this is the #1 air drum song in the world!
Imagine a summer night, rolling down the road with your high school friends. Windows open, warm breeze blowing through your hair. The smell of fresh cut grass, and summer sounds. Slipping into the night, just relaxed and chilling. Then this song comes on the radio. Yeah. That was how it was when this song came out. Life was just too cool.

Phil's last concert was in March of 2022. His spine is deteriorating due to an injury, plus he has other issues such as, debilitating pancreatitis and diabetes. Phil won't be performing again, most likely. During his last performance, his son, Nic, had to play the drums. Phil Collins will always be one of the best drummers and pianist this world has ever seen. Prayers and positive energy to you, Phil. Thanks, too, for your magnificent music. That will live forever. ❤😊❤
@kevindower5987 Fantastic. I've been too many concerts. But, 2 people I wish I'd been able to get to. Elvis was one. I had tickets, still have them to a concert here in NY but sadly Elvis never made it there because he passed away. The second would've been to see Phil Collins. Just didn't get to any of them.

Right?? I was thinking that too. I don’t play drums but I’ve sang in choirs and singing is an aerobic enough exercise in and of itself. I can’t even imagine doing it while playing drums that vigorously! 😂

I didn't recognize him him in a recent picture. When my son was born he loved listening/watching Phil Collins/Genesis. He's now fast approaching his 37th birthday and still listens. Phil Collins is timeless.
I guess Polo is not aware that Phil Collin’s was in a little band called Genesis that had as their original singer the amazing Peter Gabriel and when he left the band Phil took over front and center. This albums been out for a while and still holds up.
@@michaelbyrd7883 And Phil was in Brand X before that with John Goodsall, alongside keyboardist Chris Clark, percussionist Scott Weinberger, and drummer Kenny Grohowski. For a while, Percy Jones was their bass player. I have probably all their albums too. :)
When this song first came out, there were times when you would be sitting in your car, listening to the song, and then when the drum solo came (the part you said was badass), you'd see 3 other cars all around you all doing the air drums to that part. It was the coolest thing...
Omg I miss that kind of shit SO MUCH. When cruising the mall at 16-17 back in '00, we still always listened to the radio and CDs was something rich kids had in their cars. You could totally tell who was listening to 98.7 or 99.5 in their car by whenever In the Air Tonight came on!

Watching people react to this video for the first time never gets old. The first 2 minutes is the musical equivalent of foreplay, so by the time the drums rise up from below, the audience is whipped into a lather. Gentlemen, take note. LOL
When he said, “this is the best song without drums I’ve ever heard” oh man, the excitement/anticipation for when he goes in on the drums was crazy. Great reaction 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
Saw him a couple years ago. Due to physical ailments he sat for most of the concert. His 18 year old son played the drums which was special in and of itself, but then for this song, he stood. And his baby boy killed it on the drums 😭❤️😭❤️. What a beautiful thing to witness.
This video was recorded "Live in Paris" when it was already world famous for near two decades. Music nerds knew that drum-break coming and anticipated the whole song. But can you imagine how that felt when it hit the people first? Fresh on vinyl - lots of former Genesis fans now curious about Phil's first solo album. And then thunder struck...
Yes, this performance was recorded in Paris. But "Live in Paris" was the name of a tour in 1997 (with a totally different looking stage by the way). This one was actually from his "First Farewell Tour" in 2004.
Didn’t know this was in Paris. Does it happen to be the same place where Rammstein recorded their amazing performance of “Du hast”? It’s one of my other favourite live recordings.
More than that even, there are a lot of people that credit this song for the popularity of Miami Vice. The amount of people that heard it for the first time watching Crockett and Tubbs drive that Ferrari to confront the big bad guy...

I remember when this played on Miami Vice. Blew us away because the context of the episode was matching perfectly to the lyrics. Absolutely one of the best live performances of all time.
It was the premiere two hours episode of Miami Vice, Brother's Keeper. The scene was a masterpiece of TV cinematography, and changed television forever, bringing the era of popular songs crafted into popular shows.
Mesmerizing...how Phil Collins takes command of the entire arena with only his eyes, his presence and his voice. Truly amazing. This was my favorite song when i was 13 yrs old in jr high. Im 55 now and i still love it just as much.
Yeah same here!!!! I first heard him on an album I borrowed from a library and I heard this track and I thought "Omg who IS this guy??? I'm buying my OWN copy of THIS!!!" 🤣👍think I wore the vinyl tracks off it tbh...

Man, this song. It never get's old. The suspense and build-up to the drums is so awesome. I am still heartbroken that Phil can't play the drums anymore. Those performances were legendary
@@plan4life He had back surgery that went sideways and he can barely stand as a result. The surgery was done because of the pain from years and years of drumming. Not really age related (he's 71), since Mick Jagger (78), Rod Stewart (77), & Paul McCartney (80) are still filling arenas.
@@plan4life yeah sadly this last tour he struggled to stand so he sat most of the time. He would still get up to hype the crowd for this song before sitting at the drums. I believe he mentioned that even sitting now hurts his back
FACTS!! I am 53 and Phil and Genesis are some of my happiest times even when we were living in poverty! And I didn't blame anyone about it, that time made you hungry for success, well it di me anyway.
I have heard this song so many times but never seen the video. I never realized Phil Collins did that epic drum drop himself! while singing! Like.. omg. So so so epic.
This track was honestly a landmark in music production, Phil Collins and co spent years trying to figure out how to make digital reverb on drums to create that iconic 80s gated reverb sound. This was a monumental jump forward in the way production treated drumming in the mix. Without this jump there would be no hip hop, no electronic music, music as we know it would be completely different. This song is massive in its impact on music production.
And one of the craziest things is, the drums were recorded through the room mic, a low level microphone hanging in the ceiling of most studios used to amplify the musicians voices in between takes to enable conversation between the audio engineer and the band on the fly. It's what gives the drums this iconic raw distortion.
That iconic sound actually started as a goof, they left a (general) studio mike on by accident while Phil was playing. The pick-up of a non-dedicated mike gave it a unique signature, and the rest is history. Love it!
He caught a lot of flack for using electronic drums before most drummers and using the recording to manipulate the sound. The first one through always gets bloody! I was a huge Genesis fan growing up, though they were a bit before my time. I'm one of the few that never felt the need to pick Phil or Peter. Many love one and hate the other. I love them both. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is a masterpiece, but so is the live Seconds Out with a lot of songs Peter sang originally! A Trick of the Tail is my favorite though, and of course Follow You Follow Me is my wedding song:)
He slayed the 80's. Every other song on the radio was his, and not the same one being played over and over like today! Almost every song he touched was a banger! This song is when he went solo. He's always been percussion and lead vocals. Check out his first band Genesis.
Phil Collins started out as a teenager playing drums for Genesis then their singer left and he became the singer then went out on his own. If you hear this while driving you will play the drums on your steering wheel, we 've all done it😁
Yeah it's probably not wise to play this and drive at the same time. I have that same thing with the Music for the Deaf album by Queens of the stone age. Air drumming for my life!

Those of us who got to see Phil do this in concert, in his prime, regard it as a near-religious experience. Some feelings can’t be explained, you just needed to BE there…
Your reaction to the drum intro was almost as great as the song itself. Your response was almost emotional and I totally understand why. Phil Collins is a legend.
It’s one of the best, most-iconic songs of the 20th century. The night drive with Crockett and Tubbs driving through the city streets in “Miami Vice” in their Ferrari Spyder white this was playing is what encouraged producers to showcase other potential hits-but it was “In The Air (Tonight)” that really set the standard.
This song never, ever gets old. Saw him in concert back in the 70's. Music from the 50's, 60's and 70's were the best. At 65, I am one of his biggest fans. To have the lungs to sing the later part of this song is remarkable.
...every generation will say "our songs were the best" but truly, 70s till late 80s were truly timw if the best produced music and music videos without digital hi-tech equip.

It's still my opinion that the 1980's was the greatest decade for pop culture in general, including the main art forms of music and movie making. This song is a perfect example of the ecclectic sounds of the 80's. In the 80's there were so many artists and various types of sounds, and no two artists sounded exactly the same. Pretty much everyone being an 80s teen were so fortunate to experience the incredible shift-over from great classic rock artists to such talented, memorable, and enduring musicians and groups of the era for pop, rock, punk rock, early Rap, early "Alternative". Phil Collins was a key leader in this period; considered by many within the top 25 best drummers of all time, dubbed The Human Metronome. His music has played key elements in many movies and there is rarely a day that his timeless musicianship isn't heard on the radio still more than 30 years later. This live performance rendition is superb , and, emotes powerful feelings. Even more incredible was being so fortunate to seeing him 2 times live in the 80s and early 90s solo and 1 time in a reunion tour with Genesis while they were still very much at a prolonged peak. There are so few artists, while exceptionally talented in the current ages, that will have such enduring musical influence. While some songs are simple fun poppy in nature, his extensive variety of songs also delve into social and personal struggles, world changes, longing, love, struggle, loss... We are blessed to have had him as a musical influence extending across two generations. May he find peace in his health and personal struggles after having given so much of himself to us.
This song was about his divorce and very painful for him to write and sing. The audience on this song was worried that he wouldn't make it to his drums in time --- they always are -- that's why Phil turns and says " Don't worry " every performance.Phil Collins is sheer genius ! As a BeeGees lover too , I have to point out that once Phil was on drums at one of their big outdoor concerts at Wembley Stadium in London --- unannounced. They all were friends and admirers of each others' music.
@sharonl.chandler8428 The song was written around the time of his divorce, but Phil says it was NOT specifically about his divorce. Phil composes songs by making up words that fit with the music he composes first. There are a lot of false urban myths about this song. If you Google it, you can find some Phil interviews where he explains it. You may be thinking about his song I Don't Care Anymore, which IS directly about his breakup.
The 70s were the great decade of creativity, exploration and Progressive Rock. Phil was in the greatest Progressive Rock band ever, imo, Genesis. From 1971 on, as drummer and then drummer and lead singer, Genesis was at the peak of their creativity in the 70s. Selling England, The Lamb, Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering. All masterpieces, works of art. I was still a huge Genesis fan throughout their entire career, but Genesis wasn't as creative and Progressive in the 80s and 90s as they were in the 70s. That's because Phil exercised more influence on the song writing and music when he started his solo career in the early 80s. Phil veered more toward standard pop, he liked brass, Motown, so his output veered more toward soft rock and pop. I liked a lot of his solo output, saw him live 4 times with his solo band, but his Genesis output, such as Los Endos, was the killer creative and progressive stuff. I saw Genesis 10 times. In the Air Tonight is definitely his best song, and Genesis considered it for the Duke or Abacab album, but made the mistake of not using it, so Phil put it on his first solo album. There is no doubt Phil was a great artist and along with Bill Bruford, one of the greatest drummers of the last 50+ years. Its his drumming I'll miss the most.
I was in my late twenties but saw the first Miami Vice and COULD NOT AGREE MORE! Now I am old I too get the same feelings as I did that night and every time I have heard it since. ✌️

Polo has a great ear. When he says the beginning of this SONG is almost cinematic, the style goes back to Genesis, the group where Phil Collins was a drummer. So cool to see him discover music that for those of us, teens of the 80s, is iconic. In the Air Tonight travels well. Maybe Polo should check out Peter Gabriel next.

@@timaustin2000 I'm aware he's still alive. I meant when he was at his prime he could and did everything.

Gene Krupa was the Best Drummer and you never hear about him.
Phil Collins was 30 when he released In the Air Tonight & is on the doorstep to turning 73 today. He's an amazing singer/song writer!
I thought this was a break up song & the best bit of drumming singing I know
Sadly, his health is in decline. I loved Genesis and Phil as a solo. So glad I got to see them live.
And he did a song with bones thugs and harmony

For those of us that have followed Phil for a long time,me personally over 50 years, know the power of all of his songs. If he started again today, without doubt he would be,the best singer songwriter ever.
I was privileged to see him in concert.
NUFF SAID

That’s awesome!!!
Ummm… Phil Collins didn’t write the music for The Lion King, Elton John did. Did you mean to say Tarzan? Phil Collins wrote the music for that and Brother Bear.
Great story!
That's so awesome! 🥰
@Court That was an emotional comment, may you and your be blessed and may the reason for that “absolute” terrible day be a lost memory.

Genesis was a great band and Phil Collins is a UK national treasure.
Imagine a summer night, rolling down the road with your high school friends. Windows open, warm breeze blowing through your hair. The smell of fresh cut grass, and summer sounds. Slipping into the night, just relaxed and chilling. Then this song comes on the radio.

Phil's last concert was in March of 2022.
His spine is deteriorating due to an injury, plus he has other issues such as, debilitating pancreatitis and diabetes.
Phil won't be performing again, most likely.
During his last performance, his son, Nic, had to play the drums.

Fantastic. I've been too many concerts. But, 2 people I wish I'd been able to get to.
Elvis was one. I had tickets, still have them to a concert here in NY but sadly Elvis never made it there because he passed away.
The second would've been to see Phil Collins. Just didn't get to any of them.
Hey, Polo Reacts: Styx always has mixed reviews! I’ve always liked Come Sail Away! You wanna hear an Old Guitar Player? Go wayback to my childhood. Check out Chet Atkins, Singer Tennessee Erny (sp?) Ford! The 1st song I ever memorized is “Like A Bridge Over Troubled Water”!

Prayers out to Phil Collins. He is not doing well. He is, and will always be, a true legend.
I had the opportunity to see him in concert a couple years ago. Sad to see him in a wheelchair but glad to see he still brought the house down!
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to keep those tones singing while beating the heck out of the drums? Just amazing !!!
Right?? I was thinking that too. I don’t play drums but I’ve sang in choirs and singing is an aerobic enough exercise in and of itself. I can’t even imagine doing it while playing drums that vigorously! 😂

I have heard this song so many times but never seen the video. I never realized Phil Collins did that epic drum drop himself! while singing! Like.. omg. So so so epic.
Hes a drummer first and foremost
First time for me to see him live, wow.
Concordo ,tudo mudou depois desta musica 👍🏻
Really? That’s a nice piece of music history trivia. Thanks man!
Great comment, but I have to point out that Phil was with Brand X before Genesis, and the music was also KILLER
Phil Collins not only has an incredible voice but is also regarded as one of the greatest drummers in drum circles.

The song was written around the time of his divorce, but Phil says it was NOT specifically about his divorce.
It’s called one of the best “beat drops” of all time for a reason. ❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥 Phil Collins is a beast of his own. Thanks for reacting. He has plenty of other awesome songs
Without drums!❤ i was like baby, just you wait!😂😊
*No* Gimmicks, *No* special effects, *No* fancy clothes, *No* overdone aesthetics, *No* half naked women or men, yet is the most talented, & coolest dude, that ever walked this planet, IMO!!! 😎😎😎
well, there were a lot of special effects. But Phil kicks ass regardless.
@@ThatDudeGuruthere were hslf naked ppl on done vids i think too
Some of the backing vocals have autotune, but it's done for effect, and not for reasons people usually use autotune. In this case it serves to make things better
Yea Phil is great, but as far as the most talented?....I beg to differ.
Sandy you a little off there…
Polo I’m a 67 yr old white lady and your anticipation and reaction was the best!!
We were privileged to grow up in a time when music and artists were so authentic 👏
Phil Collins is a legend and this song is a classic. He literally has a voice like no other.
Imagine being my generation and not only have lived when music like this was made and now can re-live everything together with a younger generation! 🥰
Magnificent bass line by the iconic Lee Sklar who’s backed hundreds of bands! ( the dude with the white beard)
Shock that fkn monkey!
👍🏻👍🏻
@@asmrdreamland200 Sledgehammer-one of the most iconic songs of the eighties with the best video of pretty much all time!
Hed like Peter Gabriel
Agree, I’m new to his channel and love his insight. Have never been disappointed by his reactions.❤️
Phil is an incredible drummer all on his own. The fact that he can sing (while drumming), just puts him in a category that only a few can touch.
I’d say Don Henley, Karen Carpenter and Levon Helm are also excellent
an invisible touch?
Only Don Henley (Eagle's fame) can even compare. Sorry but Henley reighns supreme)
... and it requires a fairly high degree of _fitness_ as well, just like opera singers.
Another thing that one wouldn't assume about Phil just from looking at him..!
@@nibblitman You 100% nailed it....Listening to this with my wife just now, I brought up Karen and Levon along with Phil...Tho Levon was limited in his vocal range.
No cap, best concert I’ve ever been to.
And I been to A LOT!!!!!!
I hear this and still think of that Miami Vice episode. So many chills. The build up in this song is phenomenal. And live is as good as the recording, perhaps better.
Yesssss! My husband and I watch Miami vice , from start to finish every few years. This song is big part of it!!
YESSSSS!! 😅❤
It does the same thing to me. It you haven't seen that episode, you have only had half of the experience. I believe it is the first episode.
Yes!!!!
Phil Collins/Genesis one of the greatest performers EVER! So happy people are still listening! Absolutely one of the best live performances ever!
The UK produces some truly amazing musicians ❤❤❤xxxxxx
nah man kind does, take care.
Heard it on Miami Vice every week! Amazing song.
Saw him live 4 years ago. When the intro to this song began the crowd stood still and you could've heard a pin drop. By far the best live performance I've experienced, just like in this video
Wow lucky you seeing Phil Collins in concert!!!!
I am a sixtys baby, so I was weined on good music, I almost feel sorry for the younger generation, who will never have the musical experience I had.
You have to bring the music to them. They will listen and learn what's good!
If you haven’t watched the clip from the original Miami Vice featuring this song, go now and watch it. Still gives me chills. There’s never been a better song placement in a tv show. Amazing.
Oh yes. I remember that so well. Just thinking about it gives me chills. Thanks for that memory.
I think it fit perfectly in the movie Risky Business.
Yes…I so remember it. And I’m almost 67 and still love it.
Epic song, epic Miami Vice episode! 😎🤩
Miami Vice was that show me and my granny loved watching! She was one of the first people to get cable on her street and maaaan let me tell you, the cable channel USA. MTV, VH 1 and BET had those songs back in the 80's. The songs they played on the show Miami Vice was absolutely out of this world!
Even after hearing this 20 million times I’m still on the edge of my seat waiting for those drums.
Holy effing shit this was such an awesome performance by Phil Collin’s! How I would have loved to be in that crowd!! Daannnnggg!
