Proenneke's Log Cabin Tour | Off Grid Cabins in Alaska | My Perspective

A complete tour of Dick Proenneke's log cabin on upper Twin Lakes in Alaska, including his elevated log cache, his woodshed and the neighboring cabins owned by Spike and Hope Carrithers and Weiser.
See the inside of the cabin, the woodworking details up close, the tools and other gear he used to live off grid at Twin Lakes for 30 years. Throughout the video, I pause during my hikes in the surrounding mountains and while inspecting the log buildings to reflect on Proenneke's life, his undertakings, what I like about his homestead, what I don't like and would do differently and his influence on me.
Richard L. Proenneke was an inspiration not only because of the basic home that he built and that he stayed in it for almost thirty years, but also for his thrift, resourcefulness, self reliance, perseverance and connection with nature. What I was pleasantly surprised about after reading more of his story and talking to the people in town who knew him well, was that he was not a hermit and actually liked people, socializing often. He hosted many guests, some just for the day and some overnighters, including family, friends, hikers, park staff and others. He visited family and friends in Port Alsworth, Primrose Iowa and California, where his brother Raymond lived. He spent the last five years of his life in California with his brother before passing away in 2003. His ashes were scattered on what is now known as Proenneke Peak, a mountain behind his log cabin.
Awkwardly, I spend an hour at the end explaining how Dick Proenneke inspired me to build my off grid homestead, including my log cabin, forest kitchen, log cabin sauna, wood shed and upcoming buildings including a timber frame workshop and root cellar.

Man, Mr Dick cut the trees and built his home. He also did a vast amount of tasks that most people never knew about. He had food that lasted a very long time and even built a keep to store it. He was an amazing human being. And there's no one like him

Hello. Dick was my Dad's second cousin. I grew up watching the original videos in VHS when my Dad would get them. Very proud of this man and all he accomplished. I think my Dad was alot like him in the fact that he was fine being by himself and content. And very quiet. Thank you for making this and going up there. Someday i'd love to go there.

You are already a legend. When I tell someone about your YT videos they say, "Yeah, I watch those. They are great." We can be inspired by others but we cannot be them. We are ourselves. I will be 70 in a few months and I still have aspirations to be totally independent and to go to certain places. Your pilgrimage was Dick's place in Alaska as well as your own place you have built. I wish to go to Mt. Athos on pilgrimage, but my own house my wife and I built 36 years ago is also our haven and a daily pilgrimage. Thank you, once again for the inspiration you bring to me in your pilgrimage in the woods of Ontario.

You know it really wasn't that long ago when our ancestors had to live this kind of life. My great grandfather fought in the Civil War. He totally lived off the land and you know his ancestors had to do the same so maybe it is just ingrained in us to be drawn to this kind of life. I never would have guessed that I would remotely want anything to do with that kind of life but watching you and being witness to your Alaskan journey has made me wish I were you, in a way. Or that I was young enough to be able to get out there and experience the wild and the nature and the glorious scenery. Back to natural. Your emotions are infectious and I am just thrilled for you that you have experienced this life long dream. These videos are incredible, Shawn. Thank you so much for sharing them.

The cans were not oil cans, they originally held avgas, (gas for small aircraft), that were widely used in those days in the Alaskan bush for whatever an ingenious individual could devise. My wife and two young boys spent time at Twin Lakes in the summers of 1969 and 1971. Dick and the Twin Lakes country were very important as it turned out , in the boys' lives. Particularly the youngest, who grew up to be a successful hunting guide and bush pilot.

Watching you in Dick Proeneke’s cabin, and the way you handled the items you picked up with such absolute reverence proved to me that your deep respect for him and what he accomplished is genuine and what you are paralleling your life to. And how dreamed of being there with him learning.

Shawn, your situation is different. Comparing this very remote site, protected by federal government, no places like this to buy now. You have a family and you are living with one foot in each world at times and can't be so far in back country. Because you love your family, it has to be this way. That said, what you do IS AMAZING!
Plus, the world and population and forest ecology is VERY different now. In late 70s, early 80s I was a park ranger in Great Smoky Mountains in NC & TN. Since then, we have lost a lot of trees species. Im sure it is still better in Alaska, than in lower states.
Thank you, you inspire us all.

I was 16 in 1968 and Dick was in the wilderness through some changing times to say the least ! I think of my life through those 30 years Dick was in Alaska can’t really put in words the amazement I get every time I watch the DVD ! Thanks for sharing so much more about Dicks 30 years in the wilderness! Loved it ! Have a blessed week! Frankie

I take it as a compliment that my friend refers to me as an Alaskan Hillbilly. Make do with what you have. I left AK at 18(Navy) but I picked up some experience living there as a kid(1950's). I lived in a log cabin for a summer while our house was being built in Fairbanks. It was built by a pioneer and it's pictured in Nat Geo(Oct.'49 pg 511). I was taken with the PBS doc of Alone in the Wilderness. This vid has illuminated some of that. So, contrary to what some aspire to, Dick Proenneke wasn't a hermit. He lived a life, well, kind of like our poster lives. As they say, a life well lived.

I have drawn a lot of inspiration from a man named Horace Kephart. He inspired me to build a small cabin which is only three miles from my home in town that I share with my family. Horace was an educated man who studied both wild nature and human nature in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and produced many very important books on several different subjects. He is considered the father of the Smoky Mountain National Park. My interest started when I received his Camping and Woodcraft book from my niece. I enjoyed this video immensely Shawn. Thank you.

Thanks a heap for sharing this _immense_ treat Shawn! . . . . Come to think of it, from _my_ perspective, I would say that if there ever _was_ a 'worthy' visitor to Dick's cabin, that'd be you!....
Just by watching the sheer _reverence_ with which you looked at and touched the different items you saw in and around the cabin, the hike up the mountainside, your soaking up of the spectacular vistas of the area, and your overall enthusiasm ans awe displayed in this your 'bucket list' visit, is testament to the honest and grounded human being you are! . . .
Also, take comfort in the fact that you're bringing genuine joy to all of your viewers and followers around the world, sharing selections of the bona fide wonderful planet we inhabit - in a natural way! May you have future decades of exploring and sharing waiting for you! . . . . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💓
Edit: On account of different reasons, I've not watched your videos in sequence (''chronologically''), as I feel no desire to, and as I view each video as an independent 'gem' all of it's own! 😉 )
