I say this to everyone but especially young men. This is how you accomplish things big or small. This is how you create as opposed to just day dreaming. One day at a time, dealing with challenges as they come up, resting when you're tired or frustrated but not giving up, and getting help, not if, but when you can't do it alone. Kudos on the build.
@@w_ll__4824 Taking one day at a time, dealing with challenges as they arise, resting as needed and then keeping on going, getting help when help is the right thing… these apply to every single one of us. They do not tell us WHAT we are pursuing or doing, just a way of doing that works well with any and all things. What is the opposite of that? Trying to do everything in one go, ignoring challenges that arise, working oneself into total exhaustion so nothing can be done, never going for help even when one cannot do the thing alone? Is this what you mean?
This deserves to be in Netflix or even better... in the Movie Theatre! The quality, the detail, everything! Every single episode is so satisfying to watch.
Your video brought my mom, peace and joy during her last months after battling cancer for 7 1/2 years. She would turn it on and keep it in the background, and then we would rewind it and sit and watch it. This month is the one year anniversary of her death and your video randomly started playing on my account today. I was watching a video about living in Washington state. So I thought I should say thank you for documenting your journey and unknowingly bringing my mom peace and happiness in the midst of so much pain. Much love to you and yours.
I'm absolutely speechless. I just spent 3 hours mesmerized by this video. It would take me another 3 hours to articulate why this video is so incredible.
The snow, the autumn leaves, the views, the crane, the bread, the tent, the cabin, the tent, the table, the roof, the spring, the summer, the friends...Thank you for the journey, its a joy to watch.
I always felt that when the student is ready, the teacher will come. You have taught me patients, perfection, great attitude and it’s all good. It only took me 73 years to be ready. Thanks
I live few kilometers from that place! So close to my hometown! This is the point of view our valleys deserve to shine a bit more across the world! Thank you Martijn for your journey, thanks for you images and imaginations, too! Thank you all for watching and appreciating our astonishing nature. Greetings from Italy and from our northern valleys!
@@clercfred I wouldn't disclose the exact place since Martijn didn't, but it's in Val Pellice (as reported in the opening of the video), not so far from the French border.
Oh thank you! Yeah I am sure he does not want 300k folks to know that! I did not yet get to the opening video, believe it or not, so thanks for the info!

man you are just great. I'm actually from Italy (Liguria near Piedmont) and seeing a foreign guy putting so much effort and love to bring back to life two old stone cabins, "Teccio" as we call it, and choosing to live off grid here is simply so wonderful and you deserve all the Italians respect. Thanks for sharing your journey and your skills, amazing.
Sounds incredible, I thought this guy its Italian, were he come from? Me, I'm so excited to watch his project....I'm so passionate about off grid living, I'm so exhausted sometimes about the big cities, they are and offer great things as well, but nothing like that, just to have and feel the extremely quietness and fresh air, it's just to touch the sky easily with ur hands. New York it's a nice place to live, but I wish one day I wi have the chance with my sweet family members to have this opportunity as well. ❤🙏💚👏👏😉🎉
@@lorenaengasser2939 I think he is from Amsterdam. If you haven't, you need to check his One year on a bike documentary, which contains 4 IMPRESSIVE videos.
Here and in spirit along with you from the first bike trip. The slow nature of the work, the notice of detail, the quiet tranquility.... like a healing balm to (apparently) a great deal of people, and I am among them. Thank you. Bless you!
hi y'all , from gulf coast Of 🇺🇸... we need tons of good great builders like MARTIJN to rebuild Florida. from bad booty IAN.. I will get HAEVN music going... can't wait MARTIJN, hope you are feeling better.. stay warm..have a blessed day..♡
What makes this so special is that it’s not a television renovation with a cast of thousands but one man with a dream and achieving it with hard work, dedication and vision. Outstanding 😊
I could honestly watch this as a show. It's so amazing how random people just join to help you out and how everyone is so friendly and you're so welcoming of everyone. So wholesome aswell as interesting
...And yet. Italy is rapidly dying! It absolutely boggles my mind, and breaks my heart. Hope people wake up enough to change the current most probable outcome. 😔
I don't know why but this brought tears to me, first the beauty of the natural environment, then the fact that Martijin is an artist and also an artist in his filming ability, so beautifully put together.
This gives me so much vision and hope. I have been suffering from depression and anxiety over many years and I have now found a way out. I will retire next year and start to take control of my vocation and my mental health. This film has been so wonderful to experience, it gives me strength to look at each area of our house and start finishing things off rather than just continue to look at what is left incomplete! You are so much more than just inspiring, Martijn.
Good luck to you Richard. Depression is a hard thing to live with in the day to day of life. The things going on around us for the last few years have been a challenge to many of us, Covid has left many people in my age group (73) with weak immune systems and fear of even going out. Please talk to someone about your depression and take medication if needed. I feel you are on the right track with your intentions to do things you love. Chin up!
Hang in there Richard. I retired 2 years ago and I find joy in getting things done at my house. If you liked this show, I'll suggest what I saw yesterday. Justin Barbour. 10 day 200 km expedition on TH-cam. I didn't get anything done on my house but I was happy to watch.
Yes this is excellent for the anxiety and depression. Also you might want to look into the Shawn Baker MD, what he says about the diet, food ... IT might help to have also proper nutrients, so less of the anxiety and the depression. more health and strength.
@@DeBoerVan hi from sunny South Africa! I also suffered from depression especially after I lost my husband to cancer, moved to a one horse town and bought a 120y old house on 6x erven. I was busy dying at age 57 & now I'm out in the sun doing permaculture & hugelculture, taking medicinal mushroom completed the picture, after just 2x months I'm feeling as strong and happy as I was when in my 20's
I looked at it and thought: "Bruh, I'm not watching 3 hours". But I did and now I want more. Spectacular scenery, filming, storytelling and music. I am in awe of what you have created. Thank you.
Martijn I work mostly from home. I play your videos when I work, and they provide a degree of companionship. Yesterday I had to put my dog of 13 years to sleep. She was a great friend, and I will always miss her. So, my home is very quiet now. Thanks for all your efforts in sharing your world. It is much appreciated.
Oh man, it’s not a good feeling to lose your best friend. My boy went to sleep in May, and his friend Eve made it up to see him today. I just know they are looking down on us from up there having a great time running around with all their mates. Warm feelings are being sent your way!
Hello John... what breed was your "Princess" ....so very sorry for your loss My Shawn was 13 also..miss him everyday♡ He was an Irish Setter... always acted like a puppy
@@patriciadamario Hi Patricia. Mine was a standard Dachshund. I’ve always had dogs from large to small. I adopted her when she was 5. She was a very quite lady. The quietest dog I’ve known. She was a great little friend. I’m now looking to adopt 3 old dogs who are in kennels. Will be going with my family to visit this weekend. There are many old dogs who struggle to find homes. Perhaps have a look yourself? BTW Irish Setters, a handsome breed.
I can’t imagine how hard this was for him to stop and film, edit and document at the same time he was building but I’m glad he did so we all can enjoy this incredible journey as it is the journey through life where living exists.
It's been visual meditation for me. So soothing, pensive, and beautifully shot. A sheer pleasure to be a witness to this magic. Thank you so much, Martijn for enriching my life. Warmest regards from Canada.
Very well espressed! Martijn is touching so many lives. I feel people coming together and that is a very good feeling. Oh if we could come together in this world. 💚

What a truly refreshing channel. In my opinion Martin is the antithesis of what so many you tubers project on their channels. A very humble person who admittedly doesent "know it all" but is determined to learn how to complete a task without a superior attitude. Who doesent run his mouth blabbering on and on. What views. Videography and editing is top notch.. Well done Martijn.
In a world in turmoil where everything seems to be only going faster and faster, following Martijn is so relaxing and satisfying. Happy to support you Martijn. Thank you….
At first, I thought I would split the 3 hours video in 3x1h to avoid a long session. Then…. I was slowly falling in the sweet mood and stay “scotched” for the entire 3h without any regret. You won a life Martijn and well deserved it.
Thoreau built a cabin and wrote Walden or Life in the Woods. Your adventure here in the Italian alps is as poetic and creative invoking the same ethos that all of us only need a few material things to live a meaningful life! Thank you from the Pacific Northwest.
From one spirit traveler in the Pacific Northwest to a fellow spirit traveler in the Italian alps, keep walking. I'm following your steps as you live your Italian Alps Adventure Martijn. Its beautiful, its wonderful. Shalom
Thoreau's "cabin in the woods" was actually a huge cleared tract of land. It was within view of a well used road, a half hour walk from Concord village and his mother helped with laundry and food and his family home was a 20 min walk away. The commuter train to Boston ran along the pond and it was a busy pond all year long. Swimming/picnicking/ice skating/ice cutting. He was finding wilderness in a suburban setting, not living in wilderness. So completely different from what this man did.
Watching you is food for my soul. I have grandsons about your age. I’m over 80. Loving your project. You have made great progress and you must feel good about yourself and your project. Beautiful land. I’m in USA. California. Peace to you…✨🙏🌞
Cinematography, editing, sound design, those epic drone shots, the satisfaction of watching a complex renovation done right! The natural beauty of your mountain homestead overlooking that incredible landscape is fully matched by the skills you're displaying in capturing it for us.This one-year compilation is just so satisfying to watch! Thanks for your channel.
When i was younger ( early 30's ) I BOUGHT land in Arkansas, U. S., Married and homesteaded it with another couple. IT was an old home place, nothing lefte but flowers, stone walls and good springs. We built EVERYTHING from ground up. Unfortunately, infidelity and divorce killed the dream for all of us. The terrain was similar, but the shot with the birds singing, wind rustling the leaves, and sounds of nature/water, brought back the happiest, most peaceful time in a long while. I ended up as an RN in prison psychiatric units .. strange life journeys, but your kind of life was the best and most competent I ever felt. Success in your endeavors, friend!!
You are a part of me, part of all of your viewers. I smell the caffe, I fell the wind, and I see as you your beautiful views of mountains. All the best for the next years Martijn, you inspired me for beeing a better me!
I’m a builder and I don’t think many would understand how much work has gone into this fantastic project. Absolutely the highest standard of craftsmanship I hope the young folk will learn from. Hats off to this man.
Accidentally and happily came across your channel and I enjoy EVERY SINGLE SECOND of it! There's something so uplifting seeing someone restoring a home that likely was once thriving & filled with happy people! Watching you do the work is equally as amazing. Thank you for including us on your journey.
Martijn, I don't often comment on here, but your One Year synopsis is absolutely amazing. The music, the camera work, and the editing down to essential elements of the past year come together into an award-worthy documentary. I wish I'd been watching from the beginning. I promise, I will be from now on.
This piece of film is absolute art. The atmosphere and emotion that captures the pure joy and beauty of life, human connection and joy. Thank you, deeply, for sharing this with all of us that can only dream of this kind of adventure. I will follow your path with great hope and love for you 🙂🙏 I hope you're well.
Yes, proof that quiet and nature is calming and attracting to a lot of people. No flash bang, harsh music. Actual hard work with your hands every day. Bravo.
I’d forgotten he lived in the cabin last winter, except for the holiday trip to Holland. This winter will be more comfortable for him. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this channel. So impressed with how he preserves with doing what need to be done. Classic Zen of chop wood - carry water. Very inspiring. 👏
I live in a small town in Licking, Missouri, USA. I’ve always wanted to travel, especially to Italy. I’m disabled now so I don’t have any faith that will ever happen. But you & your videos are giving me the opportunity to still have a piece of my dream & I thank you for sharing. You have an amazing gift. You knowledge of both carpentry & ability to gain the natural power amazes me. Gods art is even more amazing. I hope you will continue to share your adventures.
who says you can't? an australian paraplegic trekked mount everest in a wheelchair. Martin Hibbert climbed Kilmanjaro in one too. I would not suggest climbing mount everest, but with the over 1 billion disabled people, they've certainly created pathways for disabled peopel to at least visit the country of italy. And italy itself isn't especially difficult, its just another modern country that's gonna have a lot of disabled accomodations. Do your dreams, be charitable, be kind. There is zero reason to regret when you can just try, taking risks for happiness :) edit: now ironically, nepal did have to ban blind/double amputee people from climbing. 300 people die on it a year, and its really just a very long line with a lot of trash and dead bodies thawing from snow melted due to climate change. Its high, but a mountain isn't high in comparison to other mountains, its high based on the spiritual experience you feel. So I would not recommend Everst to anyone. Nepal's probably incredible otherwise. Probably one of the more difficult places with a disability. Italy's just a fun, simple, good time.
Stunning. What you said about uncontrollable nature, “It gives and takes, but mostly gives.” No doubt of that by watching your video. How can anyone question the existence of an almighty God with the beauty that surrounds you? Thank you for sharing.
It looks so magnificent breathtaking, but am just a woman, my husband was also a builder, he passed away unexpectedly. He could convert anything into something beautiful, nature was his most entertaining challenge. His vision was not to distort, or dismantle but to add additional dressing to complete a parabola of a restorable vision no matter of the complexity situation it need ed. CONGRATS!!!
Do not be so stingy with the drinks and food. For all that free labor, I would have at least a tub of ice with a variety of drinks and a fridge full of food.
Look how far you have come on life’s journey! Thanks for taking us all along! It’s inspiring and enviable; we must each participate in a dream venture, for ourselves. I’m always in awe how most of this has been just for you, alone but not lonely! To design, create, build and complete each step keeping with you the vision you set out to make a home, to have purpose and ownership. Thru the missteps, the lessons learned, and the skills you have gained. Pure bliss! Peace brother!!
it's weird, i started watching this video and i suddenly felt the urge to purchase and renovate a stone cabin in the Italian Alps. thank you for allowing us to vicariously experience this! awesome video, and an awesome home you're building!
Dear Martijn, it has been the best three hours in front of screen for a bloody long time. Devotion, skill, dedication, friendship, daydreams - your videos got everything to make everyone get up and give you a hand immediately. Not to be on TH-cam but to be there with you. Keep up your amezing work.
Everything about this is compelling. I’m particularly taken with the creation of the video. The camera angles, the thoughtful planning of the shots, the cuts and edits, the drone captures, the sound and music selections….the whole process. It really is amazingly professional, esthetically satisfying. My life is in turmoil and chaotic. Watching this I can feel my heartbeat slow, the pace of it calm and my world for a time relaxed. I came with an interest in construction, the techniques employed in remote solo building. But while that interests me still, I stay for the experience of watching, and absorbing. It’s more than what it appears to be. Brian

I have never watched something this lengthy on TH-cam, but I can honestly say that this is the most beautiful video I have ever watched. The time and craftsmanship that went into not only the restoration, but also the recording of it is breathtakingly beautiful.

I'm in awe of all the young people who come, surround him with the help he needs, and every one of them knows how to handle their tasks. That is truly heartwarming. The skills of their fathers is not being forgotten.
I came across this video by complete accident, didn't know the channel before. And I have to say, I had no idea how much this would resonate with me. Watching this process is so satisfying, the music and sound is incredibly soothing, the pictures breathtaking... I love it and I think I'll return to this video as medicine for mind and soul.
Omg, same here. I generally like these types of videos. But when I saw it was three hours long, I decided, not a bloody chance! Lol. Now I'm an hour in and I only paused it to get out of the bath, get dressed and tell hubby it's "GYO" (Get Your Own) dinner tonight! Even if I don't get to watch it all tonight, I'll definitely finish it tomorrow.
I love the timeless quality here, the mountains, the stone house, the shepherds with their herds and bells, friends helping each other and then enjoying a meal. This is what life should be, and it’s a pleasure to watch. Thank you🐝🤗❤️
Man! You have the intelligence and strength to do things that only few men dreamed of.I truly appreciate and admire the courage, dedication and a guy who I must say can pull a trigger. May the good Lord bless you and continue your progress in your journey in life.
You have done a phenomenal job not only on the two+ structures but also on the video. It's hard for me to comprehend how one man could have all of your many varied skills; a few worth noting: photojournalist, editing, sound, civil engineering, architect, construction worker, sociable, creativeness, and especially the manner in which you approached this project. You worked hard, but you recognize the important things in life: good food, cooking, hiking, enjoying the outdoors, and being with other people. Finally, thanks for not complaining about the loneliness and hard work like so many other TH-cam creators!👍
Having watched all episodes, twice, I would say this year has left you somewhat older and wiser, certainly leaner and healthier, bronzed and more mature. You can't buy that, you have to earn that. You've earned it.
Your video gave me a lot of comfort, strength, and inspiration. I have also been repairing a 100-year-old traditional house in Korea for a year. It was a very sympathetic video because there were many similar situations with you. I was going to try filming at first, but I couldn't dare because I was tired of working, but you're amazing. The details and quality surprised me. Thank you for the good video and God bless you!

I just happened to see this video offered to be watched by TH-cam and didn’t realize the length of it. I’m a nature lover and that’s what attracted me to it first. I’m glad that I watched it. One day at a time, dealing with challenges as they come up, resting when you're tired or frustrated but not giving up, and getting help, not if, but when you can't do it alone. Kudos on the build.
If a person did the opposite of all that is described then that would also be okay.
Well said! So true! Thank you for your words of wisdom.

God bless you!
man you are just great.

I think its the way to go. People are feeling so burnt out with “civilisation”. It crushes the soul at best and distorts it at worst. Viva la Vida
I don't know why but this brought tears to me, first the beauty of the natural environment, then the fact that Martijin is an artist and also an artist in his filming ability, so beautifully put together.
Depression, maybe? This guy appears to me as a bit of a fraud?
This made me cry too. My Son was like you, he was a hard worker, roofing, artist as well. Thank You for Sharing 🤠💪🩸💝
The first time I ever heard or watched martijin was his year compilation, think that is why it was so jaw dropping for me.
Hi Richard. I wish you the best in all you set out to do.
One day at a time! 🤗

There is zero reason to regret when you can just try, taking risks for happiness :)
edit: now ironically, nepal did have to ban blind/double amputee people from climbing.

It looks so magnificent breathtaking, but am just a woman, my husband was also a builder, he passed away unexpectedly. Brian

You are an incredibly talented man, I am amazed at your design, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical, baking, gardening, photography...and so much more, skills! How can one person know how to do so many things so well? The music you chose is devine, I've never been so relaxed, and it is a perfect match for the grandeur of your incredical home. Those mountains! Thank you for sharing your life with us, I cannot wait to see more. Bless you.
Goed zo Martijn. Ik vind het geweldig dat je dit avontuur durft te doen. ik hoop nog de rest van deze en veel andere adventures van je te zien
Congratulations Martjin! This was an amazing renovation celebrate 🎉🍹. You did a great job. 👏
Quanta strada hai fatto!!!
I've not missed an episode and being able to see your progress in a year makes my heart happy for you. You have accomplished alot. I hope you have enjoyed your journey as much as your viewers.
I can’t imagine how hard this was for him to stop and film, edit and document at the same time he was building but I’m glad he did so we all can enjoy this incredible journey as it is the journey through life where living exists not the destination.

This is an old school man. What an inspiration and I really wish I could have shared this journey with him.😘
The best 3 hours I’ve spent on TH-cam. I’m truly in awe of the work you’ve done (cheers to all the young helpers!), and I haven’t been this relaxed in ages. Fabulous music, and I hope there’s more videos on the way.❤️🇨🇦
