I saw this car when he did the record at Santa Pod. It still is THE most amazing thing I have ever seen. Its a hydrogen peroxide rocket, same as lunar landing vehicle.

I saw Slammin' Sammy at York US30 Dragway in 1978....it was a HOLY CRAP moment! I've never seen anything like it since. He was in the 3's and over 300 mph, but I don't recall the exact numbers....the run was mind numbing.

    As far as I know,
the fastest piston pass is still under 340mph.
They also have not broken the 4 second barrier.
The only Driver to break 400mph in the 1/4 Mile was Kitty O'Neil in Ky Michaelson's Rocket Dragster at El Mirage in 1977.
    Her best pass was 3.22@396mph.
Because it was in the desert¬ at an NHRA track or event,
    the NHRA ignores it.
    Sammy's best was 3.54@386mph.
    Kitty was deaf-
    and small.
    This worked to her favor.
    She stated,
    "I can't hear the noise...
but I can feel the power!"

I saw this guy with this car around this time doing the standard drag racing quarter mile (=0.4 km) in 3.98 seconds. I remember them saying at the time that he accelerated from 0 - 100 miles per hour (=160 Kph) in 0.4 seconds. It was the fastest thing I'd ever seen... looked like it was fired out of an invisible gun. On the run in this video, he was taking it easy!!

that funny car was the baddest car, I remember seeing it run when i was about eight or nine years old. he ran the car at an event at englishtown raceway park back in the day. i told people about the car for years and nobody believed that there was ever a rocket car that ran so fast...if i never saw it with my own eyes, i may not have either. but it was and is true... over twenty five years later... that was a BADD car... thanks.

trak bite is glue that applies a resistance when the back of the tyre is rolling up from the ground. Much like walking over glue, it requires more effort to lift your foot. sand has a lot lower resistance than glue.
    But, yeah whatever.

Apparently the reason these cars are not running any more is because the tracks cannot get public liability insurance to allow them to run. The G-Forces applied to the driver were causing them to lose consciousness. Vanishing Point did have an issue with obtaining 90% Hydrogen Peroxide fuel but I believe it was overcome. Tragically Sammy Miller was killed a few years ago in a workplace accident. He was a super guy and the real driving force behind the rocket cars at Santa Pod,UK. RIP Sammy.

Hense why Santa pod is the fastest Drag strip in the world, coz sammy did nis 3.58 there and kitty did hers on a desert. A Desert has less rolling resistance that a specificaly design drag strip.

Those twin bottles in the front of the car is the source of the power? is it similar to knocking the valve off a pressured cylinder? This type of racer is new to me, so please bear my ignorance.

propulsion is by hydrogen peroxide. mixed with oxygen it expands at a massive rate.they used a thruster off a lunar landing vehicle. his 0-60 time was too fast to get. 0-100 m.p.h. was in 0.36 of a second pulling 12g's.

if he ran 1/8 in 1.6sec shouldn't he do the 1/4 in perhaps 2.4sec with an 8G avg acceleration?
    anyway this is amazing!!!

  • @PigsCanFly99
    @PigsCanFly99 16 ปีที่แล้ว

max acceleration as measured in g's for a wheel-driven vehicle is around 3.35 g's. Any greater torque and you loose traction. G's immediately drop off. Rocket's are capable of achieving 400 g's of accleration. Ground-based anti-missile missiles routinely demonstrate this. 8 g's as is widely quoted for wheel-driven dragsters is Hollywood fantasy .. 3.35 g's max. Instantaneous or otherwise.

Vykan Viking .... It was earlier than 1984 ! .... I remember because I myself was in the March 1978 edition of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine. That issue has Sammy Miller as the front cover feature story and that particular pass which was ran at Santa Pod was mentioned in that issue . I no longer have that particular edition, But intend on getting another copy...There's some still available on ebay ! That issue has Sam Miller on the front cover dressed in an astronauts suit along with his rocket car at NASA !
