Great stuff!1 I saw Sammy at York PA before he was banished from NHRA tracks here in the states. We missed out on some great shows. Him and his machine were incredible!
Sammy's Rocket cars were incredible to see. Although on the whole Sammy use to race just one car at a time, I was there in the early eighties when both Oxygen and Vanishing point ran side by side. Alan Herridge who use to run The Gladiator Funny Car challenged Sammy to a side by side race. Miller Piloting Vanishing Point and 'Bootsie' Piloting Qxygen. Incredibly the Bootsie took the win in 4.1 secs to Sammy's fractionally slower 4.2 secs. Don't think it's ever been repeated.
I saw Slammin' Sammy do it in 3.5 seconds @ 350 mph in the 1980's at the Hollywood Speedway in Florida... I missed his first run and he had parachute trouble on his third run that day. I stood at the 1000 foot mark up close to the chain link fence... He ran on Hydrogen Peroxide and his rig had no body, it just looked like a big go kart with ball shaped H2O2 tanks and thrusters... I don't think anybody's had the nerve to produce one of these rocket cars since Sammy... They sold the track soon after that and the developers built condos...!
American insurance companies, I believe, were the culprit. He was performing 100 mph faster than any other machine at an event. He took a lot of safety steps (refueling a half mile away from anyone, large chutes) but he was still not welcome at NHRA sanctioned tracks after 1980 or thereabouts.
I don't know for sure, the information I read said that O'neil's runs were on a timed 1/4 mile track somewhere in the Mohave desert. Whether it was paved or not is beyond me, but the run is listed in fastest 1/4 mile times above Miller as an official record. I just wish these "experimental" type races were still allowed in the states.
@IamPorterhouse The natural high car was owned and driven by Larry Flickinger. I saw him run a Matin dragway in Michigan and it was unreal off the line.
this vid is miss labeled, the car is propelled by hydrogen per oxide, the HO2 is pumped (at high pressure) into a catalyst chamber where it breaks down into water and free oxygen... then it's out the rockett nozzle for incredible thrust. the HO2 that you put on a cut is 0.05% solution... the stuff used in this (and other cars) was 99.9% solution, so powerful that if you spilled some on exposed skin... the skin would burst into flame! . . . nasty stuff!
This car is so insane! An Saturn V rocket put on wheels. Are these cars still allowed to race in Europe? Since the DragRace in Hockenheim 1988 I have never seen one. Yeah OK...there is still Eric Teboul on his nutty rocket bike...
Yeah your right Jbe thinking back I wondered why I put that and what I was trying to get at...I think I was thinking more about the moisture content in the air...if the air is more humid would that create more drag ?? In other words how does humidity affect drag !!....comparing the above run which was in England to Kitty O'Neils which was in the Nevada Desert !!
@tjohn1986....O'Neills record was not set on a drag strip it was set in The Nevada Desert and more importantly at a damper lower altitude where the drag factor is lower!
@louswire As said above, its not mislabelled. The cars name is Oxygen, and btw youre the one that appears to have mislabelled, Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2 not HO2, HO2 would Hydroperoxyl radical
Wondering why nobody is trying to break thous records with all the new technology we have nowadays. There is enough crazy peope out there who would do it. Are the people not interested anymore in such things like in the 70s or 80s?????
I think these oxygen rocket cars are widely banned due to the very dangerous speeds they are capable of. It would be interesting to see what could be achieved now. I think if these records are to be broken it may be more likely that the car that does it is unmanned, as in either remote or computer controlled, in order to reduce the risk to human life.
I stand corrected appliedforce, I spoke too soon and didnt realize exactly what you were talking about now that ive read back over it, sorry about tha, I need tostop getting buzzed and commenting on here lol. Its nice to see someone like you too that is, or atleast appears to have his wits about him, have a nice day. Its good to know theres still some non-mentally handicapped people that comment on these videos haha.
The demise of these particular rockets, was caused by the end of their fuel supply. Hydrogen peroxide is a nasty chemical at the concentrations they ran. One of th two supply companies either ceased production, or went out of business. A truely 'green' car the 80 lb motor, catalyzed the hydrogenperoxide changing it to high preasure steam, and free oxygen.
I heard some other numbers back in the '80s. I was told that the percentage of the solution used was 90%, and the stuff I use on my skin is .01% I believe. And what I was told was that if the 90% solution was spilled on your skin, it would burn a hole in your skin through dissolution, not "burst into flame". Let's not overstate our claims here. I have read about some of Hitler's experiments with this type of propulsion, and the associated disasters suffered by some of his test pilots. Funny!
@rael1999 The air is thicker at lower altitude, therefore drag would increase, not be lower. Why do you think jet aircraft are faster at higher altitudes? Duhh Piston engined cars make more power at lower altitudes but aircraft are negatively affected, and so would a rocket car. They dont need to intake air so the thicker air would cause more resistance, ie MORE DRAG
@appliedforcellc What? This is a standing 1/4 mile! Can you not see that? There is no reason at all to doubt the passes these cars made. It really isnt hard to fathom that a fucking rocket car would be faster than any piston engine. Look at the Bloodhound SSC, no piston engine streamliner will ever come close. The power or should I say thrust-to-weight ratio and thrust-to-drag ratio of a rocket vehicle is far greater than any piston engine could achieve......
Sammy Miller a true showman, it was an honour to watch you run, thanks for the thrills.
damn! this is faster than topfuel car's of today. and this was in like the 80's

Wow. Thanks for a great clip. Much appreciated
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
incredible jamas with this guy

True story! UNCLE Sammy was a class act on and off the track!
Unreal! Sure wish I could have seen a rocket car run in person.
i saw Sammy Millers "Vanishing Point" at Englishtown Raceway, New Jersey in the early 1980's
"Oxygen" is the vehicle's name, the fuel used in the rocket engine is hydrogen peroxide, a chemical compound with the formula H₂O₂
American insurance companies, I believe, were the culprit. He was performing 100 mph faster than any other machine at an event. He took a lot of safety steps (refueling a half mile away from anyone, large chutes) but he was still not welcome at NHRA sanctioned tracks after 1980 or thereabouts.
this is a great vid
road runner... bip bip! funny sound when he starts
In 1977 Kitty O'Neil ran a 3.22 at 396 MPH, and also a 3.235 at 412 MPH in a rocket dragster. Both quicker and faster than Miller.
And they ran a full quarter Mile! Dam that was cool!
I don't know for sure, the information I read said that O'neil's runs were on a timed 1/4 mile track somewhere in the Mohave desert. Whether it was paved or not is beyond me, but the run is listed in fastest 1/4 mile times above Miller as an official record.

Cars.
@IamPorterhouse The natural high car was owned and driven by Larry Flickinger. I saw him run a Matin dragway in Michigan and it was unreal off the line.
Hotrod mag lists O'Neil @ 3.235 @412 at El Mirage dry lake, not a recognized dragstrip. In 84 Miller ran 3.54 @ 386 in England.

@appliedforcellc Also, may I ask what particular "30yr experience" you have with this? I may have some questions that you might be able to answer....
that nigga is the man rocket car i gotta get me one of those!!
@louswire As said above, its not mislabelled. The cars name is Oxygen, and btw youre the one that appears to have mislabelled, Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2 not HO2, HO2 would Hydroperoxyl radical
It's not mislabelled. The car's name was OXYGEN.
Insightful info, nontheless..
what country made this car
...my bad...

damn
What happened in 2002?? :(
@IamPorterhouse
Those were standing start runs with E.T.'s and trap speeds-
not "flying" runs.
I know Ky and I believe him.
The demise of these particular rockets, was caused by the end of their fuel supply. Hydrogen peroxide is a nasty chemical at the concentrations they ran. One of th two supply companies either ceased production, or went out of business.

i really don't understand how the oxygen engine works!!!
@crunchdrag Man, that sux :(

0-100 in .3 sec.!! 12 g’s on takeoff and they can go faster but the human body can’t!

Bob Feeler has got a rocket car !
Bob Feeler (rocketcar) VS. Eric Teboul (rocketbike) ... watch?v=czz81Iq8-KI
