Desertification is a huge problem in many places all around the world. Gives you hope when you see so many volunteers willing to work decades to do something about it!
You want the sand to become sticky to prevent it being blown by winds. Grasses have detergent properties and can emulsify water into oils/fats lipids. If that soil had sulphur added (such as by planting alliums), it could cause cross-linking in the molecules of vegetable oils (which also can be used as a cash crop for biodiesel) to deliberately clog soil and to prevent oils in the soil from repelling water (and an example of that becoming a problem elsewhere is from biochar). The advantage of alliums (like onions) is that they have large cell structures and are yet more ways to trap a large amount of water mass per cellulose biomass. Some of the onions can be left to degrade back into the soil to rerelease that sulphur. The large onion cells also trap heavy metals from the soil in their cells, and a smaller effect can also happen whereby chelation traps the heavy metals. I do think though that small areas of that land need a bulldozer and tractor backhoe taken to it to form a resevoir. Eventually you could have ground stable enough to grow some trees (some of which would be felled and buried back into the ground with a tractor backhoe, like hugelkultur waldpits).
Such hard backbreaking task by so many for so long. Digging Planting grass in such harsh conditions. Looks almost a lost cause n no fruits or grain to reap. Yet they do it n see the need to fight desertification. The foresight, the resolve, to get people doing it day in day out for decades. Respect them is an understatement. In my country we are blessed with jungles n we are cutting them down indiscriminately. Sigh.

Just modify a plough to insert the hay and tow it behind a tractor. For a few $ more you can run a small electric tractor on solar. Use gps from a phone and ask a university to write an app to fully automate the process. Job done.
China would better to register the Checker-Board Method of Greening the Desert as her Intellectual Property, a common practice in USA & Europe eg, Gnome Project. Anyone use it must pay loyalty to Chna.

These supposed sucess stories or reforestation and creating oasis out of the desert need to get together with the people making videos of polluted rivers, toxic smog over their cities, giant sand storms, and deep well polluted ground water, flooding and erosion, etc... One side of this story has to be false.

I would like to see the deserts of Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico grow switchgrass into giant grids. Switchgrass is a native prairie grass. Irrigation could be used by using condensation of humidity. Especially at night humidity is more abundant. Refrigeration units containing tanks of water could cool water yo be ice cold, then this water travels along pipes and the humidity condenses on the pipes, falling to the ground, watering the switchgrass. Then, the water travels back to the tank to be cooled all over again. The pipe is in a loop system.
Magnificent story, never lose hope, never surrender. Amazing that people, if they work smart and persevere, can change deserts and grow forests.

China has several major water projects on the same scale as California moving water from northern California to southern California.
You’ll have a hard time finding Americans to do this back-breaking hard work in Nevada Arizona & New Mexico.
