Just thought it would be a fun thing to share, when i was in primary school in China on national tree planting day the whole school would go out to places across the city to plant saplings. We would go out collectively in classes and be divided into small groups, all the parents are present too to teach all the kids how to plant saplings and help them in the process. After planting you can decide to leave a little name tag next to the tree telling you the person that planted it and the date planted, this way in the future you can find the tree that you had planted. We would often go back in groups out of our own interest to find the trees we planted and see how much it has grown! It is a significant part of my childhood and i hope more schools around the world can have this wonderful opportunity open to their young ones!😊
Great work, I am impressed by China their work on this front. Andrew Millison has made a great series on TH-cam on India's Water Revolution where India has been solving the water problems of over a 1000 villages by restoring ecosystem functions through top-down watershed management. It is nice that the countries with the most amount of people in the world are taking such active responsibility in regreening the landscapes and restoring the ecosystem functions.
@@eric2500 Yeah they explain it quite well in the videos what they have done. And show they start up high in the watershed to infiltrate water as high as possible so it runs through the soil and not over it so it doesn't cause erosion. Seems like a very solid and successful strategy.

I'm rather fond of how they're doing it in the Sahara, they're reshaping the sand to catch moisture. Then using several species of plants to help reinforce those structures. Then putting in trees. I see in China they're doing terracing, but they'll likely have to do something like what they're doing with the Sahara in the flatter parts of the Gobi.
While here in the pacific northwest. Our thousand year old three hundred foot tall trees are clear cut. All the plants and creatures of the old growth forest die or leave. The new forests that grow where the old growth was are not managed and burn so hot even the top soil burns leaving nothing but rock and brush. It won't be the way it was for thousands of years.
We need more managed fires the eco system was designed to have fire . If its left for a long time it means lots of dead material stays on the ground which is fuel
The few people in the comment section should really buy a mirror and think about how qualified you are to make strange comments without knowing the full picture. China plants more trees each year than the rest of the world combined and you can check this straight from Google Academics, and the only reason you don't know about it is because a lot of people don't want you to know, there are countless technologies and experiences about tree planting comes from it that can be extended to other Asia and Africa countries. While someone's hometown will only have a lot of "Greta" in private jets to attend the UN meeting, it is difficult for Chinese people to listen to some country with full house air conditioning and private jets and also not even be able to controlling forest fires to teach others how to "environmental protection"and "carbon emission" .Just like Taylor Swift wouldn't let me teach her how to sing.❤

Mossy Earth reports that these monoculture forests did not do so well, because they planted monoculture trees from foreign shores instead of desert adapted species that are native. Those trees suck up water even more and were used for lumber, not let to rot into the soil and enrich it. Mossy Earth also reports that they have started to plant native species and that is working better. *Numbers of trees don't well as native trees, shrubs, insects and animal life that is adapted to the desert. Yeah, it is slower that way, but you can keep it.*
you can tell from the video quite a variety of trees planted. This project has been there for more than 10 years, the side effect should be able to observe once there is any. Mossy earth somehow mixed several projects together, and analyze it for the de-desertification. There are areas, specifically in south China, companies rent the land, Hills and planted trees harvested for paper making, and lumber as you mentioned, but for those planted in desert is not allowed to cut down for any purpose. Alibaba, and other Tech Giant actually has a micro app to allow their users to choose which tree to plant, and users can monitor the growth online.
Grow cattle and camels and goats and sheep and chickens and ducks once the trees start growing. Use industrial boilers to produce millions of tons of steam to release into the air at nights to produce rain artificially. Build large lakes and grow fishes. Many things can be done to green the desert.
"Build large lakes and grow fishes." Yep. That is already being done in the deserts of Xinjiang. Additional benefits are large-scale production of seafood in the desert, and the increased employment of the local population.
To improve environment and reduce CO2 , China spends lot lot of money (subsidies) to develop green technologies like solar electricity, wind electricity and electrical vehicles. Initially US and EU praised China for that and provide assistance and now all got banned by US under accusations of over production…now I even saw accusation about the 10 year no fishing project in Yangtze River. Anything good can be turned to attack China
is it? this doesn't seem simple at all, it seems like an extremely complex mass effort that even if the entirety of China's land was greenified wouldn't offset the carbon released by the coal power plants used to power the factories that enable the Chinese economy to preform the project. Stopping the growth of deserts is an admirable goal, but this will not stop global warming.
@@edwxx20001 Coal is not going away any time this century. The best we can do is promote sustainable green energy and the expansion/creation of forests and wetlands in areas that have been desertified or are at risk of desertification.
My criticism is they are growing another "crop" all be it with significant carbon capture. As commented below (Mossy Earth), for increasing biodiversity you need to mix the species planted using local adapted species and creat a "forest". Even in a forest, there is a potential for harvest if that is one aim of the project.
you do understand that trees live longer than people right? and if its the first generation of trees thats at least gonna be like 50 years before they replant them with different trees
Problem is you’re talking about low biodiversity trees vs no trees. I have to assume they’re only able to plant desert-resistant trees anyway, and the proper biodiverse forests wouldn’t survive in these initially arid environments. Why not solve the problem first before introducing more biodiversity?
China don't have typical western mentality that I want to see result tomorrow. Just like the current generation of Chinese success was built on hard work and sacrifice of previous generation of hardworking Chinese. You can't reach the moon in one step. China has plenty other projects to reduce carbon emission and capture carbon. But stopping desertification is a already a positive step in saving existing farmland saving carbon capture.
While I kinda agree, I think the first step is plant trees that are able to survive then increase biodiversity later. Kinda like getting the desert sands to become able to support life.
Moving into cities doesn't lead to a desertification, but the process was finalizes when the private property left the countryside and other human activities like "unchecked grazing" + "unchecked hunting" and a deliberate extinction took place. These deserts are MAN MADE and thus, they can be solved by replanting and removing the human activity.
There's nothing China cannot do. Give them time. They are an ancient culture, great workers with a wide and wise ancient knowledges. I am confident they can. In the West we should learn from them instead of acting as a superior civilization and giving them lectures

Better to do what they are doing then nothing. All farming on land require one very important thing. A healthy soil that is alive with micro organisms. Get that right and u can grow plants. Plenty get it wrong and destroy the soil over time, leading to all sorts of degradation issues.
As a nation it sounds like one of the most sensible efforts to improve man's natural environment. I am not a friend of the Chinese government , but this environmental effort is definitely commendable.
Chinese government has to take care of 1.4 billion people. Can biden or trump do better. Without a strong government China will be like India, people will suffer. Your western view point does not work in reality.
no.. tree first, once tree planted then birds and bugs will come. tree litters will be foods for microorganism. bird will poop seed and create biodiversity. China did it right. But again, we dont know what will happen as this is not natural... if I am not mistaken sahara dessert was there to pump certain mineral to atmosphere and then send it via cloud, real cloud.. not your data cloud to Latin America Tropical Forest ( amazon, costa rica or whatever ).. @@goldriverbank6647 Not at all an expert. just a common sense. Just see the vacate land or deserted place during the rainy season. First there should be enough wet, then grass shows up and grows enough and dries up. wet, shady and organic content ( dried leaves) place is where micro organisim live. micro organism eat the dried up leaves and dies as its time comes will become compost. In a next rainy season the cycle is created and grass, shade and dried up matter and microbs and compost. if enough food it gives rise to shrubs. shrubs give way to small trees. it all depends on how much rainfall that area gets. if it is dryland with minimum rainfall and trees will be small and takes years to grow. and in heavy rainfall it grows fast. healty and big. my idea is to dig a pit deep of 3 feet square or round of 10 to 15 feet with 5 to 10 feet way from each other. sown a grass seeds and water it regularly or when rain comes pity will fill and will take care for water need for some days due to hallow pit. Grass grows and we will create micro organism atmosphere there. After we satisfied with grass covering plant small trees. grass will hold the water and will not allow water to dry. now we have created the environment to grow. we should not grow mono crop. we should grow multipal varieties of trees so it welcomes wild to it. birds, rats ,pigs deers etc and its predators. birds and pigs deer they eat and shit and will take the seed to far of places and makes a big self sustaining forest.
Shaun Overton bought a terrible piece of property in Texas, overgrazed by cattle again and again, and is trying to restore it. His latest effort is planting prickly pear cactus.
Still looks like monocultures in that footage. Aforestation in New Zealand looks like planting pioneer species first and once they’ve established a canopy then less hardy plants characteristic of a climax ecosystem are introduced to boost biodiversity and natural regeneration
China also has south north water project that bring water from southern China to northern China through newly built canal. I wonder if those water can be used for this greenwall project.
I'm glad he mentioned the problems with monoculture. Too many tree and plant restoration projects have resulted in major problems. Planting millions of the same tree in huge areas has resulted in forest fires (pine, spruce) which wiped out most of the efforts, as these trees are highly flammable, even in their green state. There are no barriers to fire spread with other kinds of trees. Another, as he pointed out, is pest infestation. Beetles and other insects can spread unfettered if all the trees are the same - they just move from tree to tree. Wildlife may not come to mono-planted areas due to lack of food. Animals come for nuts, fruits, seeds and other edibles. Certain trees don't provide much food source, so these planting areas can remain absolutely empty of wildlife. Other than timber, the control of erosion and the encouragement of rain, these monoculture plantings do not work with nature. Evergreens also discourage smaller plant growth due to acid needle drop. When there is no undercover of the forest floor, there is no spreading of seed of smaller plants to surrounding areas by the birds and other animals. These are sterile plantings and should be discouraged. Propagation of native plants in a wide variety should be the standard, unless it's just for lumber.
Yes! China is at higher latitudes and the moisture is sufficient for Green Cover, Drones do accelerate the process of Green Cover and getting the new varieties of Species that could be sampled out for Micropropagation at tremendous speeds in the geographical area increasing the Green Cover at faster rates that generates Employment and Tourism and the Agriculture Industry.

The afforestation initiatives led by the Chinese government are remarkably impressive and successful. The Chinese people demonstrate exceptional intelligence, as evidenced by their historical achievements.
Top down? How much do you trust that? I am suspicious until I know that they change and correct their mistakes as they go along.
@@eric2500 Yeah they explain it quite well in the videos what they have done. And show they start up high in the watershed to infiltrate water as high as possible so it runs through the soil and not over it so it doesn't cause erosion. Seems like a very solid and successful strategy.

Ah yes football fields there official unit of measurement.
Actually, this happened at my home place. I planted trees every spring when I was in middle school.
Actually the Sahara project was led by a veteran desert deforestation expert who tried it first in China!
This project is just awesome! Rly rly awesome. This is what humanity has to do!!!!
The New Great Wall of China
We see huge trains with timber traveling to China from Russia every day, and then beautiful videos of the President of China planting trees...
@@anzorpopov
We are not forcing anyone to export their resources!
You destroy your forests, it is your internal affairs!
You are not qualified to use this to accuse China!
@@anzorpopov Let me complete it for you: the US and Russia and Japan are the leaders in exporting timber to China, and secondly these three countries have the right to decide whether or not to cut their own timber and to whom to sell it to. If you are trying to caricature China as "hypocritical", you are too poor to even know that many forests themselves are regularly planted and cut down to meet demand. It's China's fault for exporting fentanyl to be made into drugs by Americans and now it's also China's fault for buying what foreign countries are allowed to export. Interesting
@@anzorpopovAt the same time, the import of wood you mentioned is completely determined by market behavior (aka free marketing) You can't accuse China of being too communist while accusing China of being too capitalist. You'd better ask the United Fruit Company to stop enslaving farmers in South America together with gangsters. At least China paid enough money for importing foreign timber
@@anzorpopov Finally : Russia's forest reserves are 150 billion cubic meters, and annual exports are only 1 million cubic meters, which is really not much compare to the total

You think they are planting coconut trees there lol? The majority of the trees planted there is Populus, a native tree that can survive desert
you can tell from the video quite a variety of trees planted.
Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. And now more effective afforestation is being done.

Grow cattle and camels and goats and sheep and chickens and ducks once the trees start growing. Use industrial boilers to produce millions of tons of steam to release into the air at nights to produce rain artificially. Build large lakes and grow fishes. Many things can be done to green the desert.

Yep. That is already being done in the deserts of Xinjiang. Additional benefits are large-scale production of seafood in the desert, and the increased employment of the local population.

is it? this doesn't seem simple at all, it seems like an extremely complex mass effort that even if the entirety of China's land was greenified wouldn't offset the carbon released by the coal power plants used to power the factories that enable the Chinese economy to preform the project. Stopping the growth of deserts is an admirable goal, but this will not stop global warming.

"i dream of gardens in the deserts"
At least they are moving in the right direction
But stopping desertification
is a already a positive step in saving existing farmland saving carbon capture.
While I kinda agree, I think the first step is plant trees that are able to survive then increase biodiversity later. Kinda like getting the desert sands to become able to support life.
You can’t become fat by eating in one day
Moving into cities doesn't lead to a desertification, but the process was finalizes when the private property left the countryside and other human activities like "unchecked grazing" + "unchecked hunting" and a deliberate extinction took place.

China is promoting amazing transformations.
before planting trees they should plant grass, shrubs and improve the microorganism rate. then plant tree i beleive.
no.. tree first, once tree planted then birds and bugs will come.
tree litters will be foods for microorganism.
bird will poop seed and create biodiversity.
I think it was phosphate from sahara to rainforest of latin america
"Trees" as spoken here include all species the Chinese scientists have tried and are trying! I don't get why so many commentors are so ignorantly conceited!!
Are you an expert?
There are literally thousands of such projects going on in China at the moment. Most of them have long ago learned not to go with monoculture.
Respect for it
