Super Mario 64: Changes from N64 to DS - Nintendo 64's 20th anniversary special

- From June 23rd 1996 to June 23rd 2016,
the most important video game of all time has turned 20 in Japan.
Back in 2008, I made 2 parts which were really out of date in today's recording standards, and as I noticed that 2016 is the 20th year, this would be the perfect opportunity to go full on and create this video once and for all.
This video also beats the Super Mario Bros 3 Changes from SNES to GBA by over an hour!
Now I seriously doubt you are going to watch nearly 200 minutes of footage without stopping so here are some time stamps!
(0:00:19) Menu, File Select & Introduction - this one is kinda slow paced so please be aware.
(0:09:25) Graphics - Mainly focusing on character models and portraits. The original characters are really off-modeled compared to the designs you see today.
(0:29:01) General & Gameplay Mechanics - Stuff like minimal star requirement and changes with Mario's movement.
(1:06:49) Notable bugs - Mainly focusing on easy to execute glitches and not hard ones that requires Tool Assistance like parallel universes.
(1:16:38) DS exclusive content - The first of two segments that's purely DS. Showing the majority of extra assets used in the DS version. Examples includes: Characters, Stages and Power-ups
(1:28:17) DS exclusive modes - The second of two segments that's purely DS. Showing all 36 Mini-games and a small gameplay segment on VS mode.
(1:53:59) Level design - This is where good attention of detail comes in. You may need to pause or slow down the video to analyse every single change that isn't "a different colour".
(2:37:56) Version exclusive stars - The DS version has 30 more stars than the N64 version but did you know that N64 had 4 stars exclusive to that version. This meant that DS version had 34 exclusive stars as well.
(2:53:52) Tweaked stars - Identical missions that had something tweaked along the way, whether there is an objective required to spawn a Power Star or it was moved to a different location.
(3:06:20) Ending - Even the ending cutscene had a few changes.
I had my own policy when making this video by not using other clips from the internet. All of the footage you'll see on here was done/recorded by me.
This meant that tough to record footage were not included in this video.

2008 recordings:
N64 - PAL Wii VC versions, Video tape recordings.
NDS - Original Model with off--screen recordings
2016 recordings:
N64 - Majority was done on a NTSC-J N64 with UltraHDMI output mod.
US and Rumble were done on Wii VC
NDS - Original Model with USB capture device.
Clips I've recorded and then archived onto my hard drives when making the new 2016 version:
N64: = 577
DS: = 682
My original 2008 recordings didn't go to full waste because my previous N64 recordings in the past did cover Level Design which made it a lot easier to re-record old material in higher quality.

Dear everyone complaining about how pixelated the DS version is,
The DS is clearly a very small device, that was made before we could put standard or high definition resolutions in very small screens. When you are playing this game or any game on a DS, you don't notice the pixelation, because it is a smaller than your palm screen.
Obviously the N64 was on your tv, so it had a much higher resolution. The DS resolution was like 300 by 200. So obviously, if you magnify that screen for say a TH-cam VIDEO, it will pixelated as all hell. Where as N64 is running in standard resolution AND can be run at FULL HD through an emulator, it will be much clearer. In fact, if you were to look at the N64 running on the actual console, it would pixelated as hell too.
So, the game being pixelated isn't a question of game quality, just a result of the fact that HD hardly existed in 2004, and was certainly NOT going to exist on a small handheld device.

The ds resolution(official) is 256x192 while the n64 is 320x240 with blurring.

@@ElNano9620 it upscales those 240p graphics to 1080p. If you have it on wii virtual console with component cables, the textures are cleaner, the framerate is smoother, and supports 480p. Wii virtual console on wii u is 1080p uscale and has darker colors. So mario 64 virtual console on a regular wii with component cables is the best option for the original version

@@TheMasonGamer In the essential areas, hes not wrong. Namely, controls and to a degree, audio are both a huge oof. I recently went back to DS to prepare for 3D All Stars, and I had troubles even navigating and jumping, and that whole time I was wondering 'How in God's name did I adjust to this to 100% it twice?' And the audio sounds like They took sound clips recorded from the 64 through a TV speaker
Textures arent looking too hot either, but that's a slightly smaller ordeal. Nintendo REALLY shouldve held off on remaking 64, cause while the extra content is nice, the controls took FAR too many hits for me to consider the DS as a outright replacement
Mario 64 DS was so ahead of it's time, the jump from 2D graphics on GBA to a fully 3D portable Mario game is incredible.

There are 3D polygonal games on GBA too, Tony Hawk, Need For Speed, etc. all did 3D on GBA.
The DS wasn't first to do so, only better at it.

If there's one thing I learned from this video, it's this: Enemies and NPCs looked way more fucking terrifying on the N64

Man, there's a lot of love and work that went into this. Seeing them side-by-side makes me really appreciate SM64DS's graphics.
And to the video creator, wow. Hats off to you. This must've taken forever but this is the coolest SM64 video i've seen since half-a press.

It's impressive that the DS could recreate a game as big as Mario 64 especially as a launch title for the system.
I think that the DS is better since the N64 colors had a big contrast in the level and made it ugly at times; also that the polygons made the characters look pointy and less detailed. As some characters look better on the N64, if feel like the DS was better for me.
But it is just my opinion after all

Really? Huge surprise that a _remake_ will have better graphical quality. It's not like Nintendo was more experienced and with better hardware or anything. Though sometimes, the N64 version looks better (ie: metal Mario and the liquid metal entrances)

Your 2008 videos are not outdated, nothing gets outdated.
You think the DS version looks great now? Try playing it on retroarch’s desmume core with a higher resolution and texture filtering, it looks like an early gamecube game. Once you get used to the controls, the DS version is miles better.

While I can see why people would prefer the original, I prefer the DS version. If they remade it for 3DS, that'd be even better.

@@theobserver4214 when you really think about is, DS is nowhere near as powerful as a Dreamcast. Dreamcast was the first console of the generation that followed N64. The PS Vita is pretty much on par with Dreamcast.

I always did like them both, since I essentially grew up with both to some degree, but the DS version feels much better to me. I wish it had co-op in the main game, but modding addressed this already, so that's all I needed. I also like the autumn colors more in the DS Bob-Omb Battlefield.

64 DS had a way of adding sound effects that seem as if they were always meant to be there, often replacing repetitions of the star collection sound.
I grew up with the DS version and there were still a few things I didn't know about here.

The modeling is so much damn better on the DS. I dunno either of these games well (esp the n64 one, never owned a 64.) But I always thought the DS one was just a straight up port other than the different char/minigame component for the most part.
Shame there wasn't AA wok on the DS version cause it looks a lot better and seems to be running at a higher resolution I thiiiiink. The AA of the 64 one is throwing me for a loop.

In a nutshell the n64 has cleaner textures but the DS has more polygons, which is better is really up to personal preference.
Nah. For some reason, they applied linear filtering to almost everything on the N64 to make their tiny textures look better when scaled. The DS doesn't and has higher-resolution textures. The nearest scaling used in the DS looks far better, in my opinion, as the linear filtering made the old one look like a blurry mess.

N64 does not run at 60fps. DS does but only for main menu and some mini-games.

64 also has better control. DS lets you use either D-pad or stylus which are crap and awkward to use repectively.

+Mario Mario that what nintendo (and even sega did) does when their company is doing shitty during the Wii era Nintendo didn't care they were making so much money from both DS and Wii so they didn't care when people hacked their systems and made remakes. I don't get combating ROM hacks at all, they can actually be a selling point.

I honestly think Mario's voice on Super Mario 64 is better than the DS'.

At 2:37:22 into the video, Mario CAN grab the ceiling in BitFS not just in the DS.... You have to double jump at full height in order to do it.(on the sloped part (otherwise they wouldn't put that red coin there))

The fact that you get to start the game with Yoshi makes Super Mario 64 DS feel like an entirely different game.
It is a new game
That's is why I like the DS version best, because it includes Yoshi and Wario as Playable characters. Something that is rare even today.

Textures: More colorful and generally prettier on the N64. And of course, unlike on the DS, they're filtered.
Models: Much better and more expressive on the DS, though they're based on the newer GameCube era style.
