I prefer the Nintendo DS version because you get Mario Luigi Yoshi and Wario Plus additional power ups and more stars to pick up however I wish they could’ve had a little bit more texture in color and some stages like in the original Nintendo 64 version

Interesting fact between the 2 games: In the N64 version, a lot of Marios lines were edited, while the DS version only uses original sampling without editing the sounds. Nintendo did a lot of sound editing back in the N64 times
This video is an excellent example of why you should only use real hardware for these comparisons. The N64 version is 320x240 on a real console, and clearly running in a much higher resolution here, making this comparison meaningless.
2 year late reply but the DS is a handheld and the N64 is a console. Ofcourse it’d look less pixelated on the N64. But you can’t deny that the DS version looks pretty good. And it’s also a great remake if you ask me for (back then) newer people to experience the N64 magic while not just playing a direct port on a handheld

I didn’t play on the NDS remake, but if I’ve compare that to N64, the N64 is more nostalgic, both for historians and fans today who discovered it. It doesn't. It's only a 32-bit system, same as the original PS. The N64 is 64-bit. While the character models may look smoother due to the DS actually having two separate 32-bit processors, the N64 has greater textures and details. The bridge looks like a bridge instead of a plank found in the DS version. The grass looks like grass instead of moss. The DS textures of the mountain and the fighting stage against Bowser are too smooth, which takes away from the visual experience in the DS version.

Sometimes its not about specs but how you use them. And DS has an advantage over the N64 and is that its more modern which gives it an edge in terms of programming tools and techniques used.

The original Bandicoot came out in 96, two years after the Playstation entered the market.

Chad Daddy Nope, playing the DS version on Retroarch with texture filtering, hd resolution, and vsync turned off (yes there’s screen tearing, but it’s barely noticeable after half an hour of gameplay) is still better. As nice as the enhancements are in the pc port, it still has the wonky physics of the original and unforgiving level design.
Mostly technical reasons. The DS models are higher poly and more in line with current Mario concept art, but the way the DS does 3D it can't do the fancy texture filtering and shading that the N64 was capable of. It's an interesting showcase of hardware differences between both platforms.

To be honest, they should remaster Super Mario 64 for the Switch with better graphics. The DS remake doesn’t have enough physics as the original N64 version does. Like for example: in the N64 version, the enemies like Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Pokeys originally had blinking physics. In the DS version they don’t blink at all. I would Love Luigi, and Yoshi to join, and I would like to replace Wario with Toad to match the SMB2 group. And I want them to return the original SM64 power boxes.

The DS definitely loses in sound, and the Dpad is way worse than using an analog stick. The fact that the DS doesn't "smear" its textures just looks awful, especially compared to n64.

Primero, quiero aclarar algunas cosas antes de empezar: es solo mi opinión personal, y ustedes no se lo tomen tan apecho, Lee completo el comentario para entender, no seas wuebon: No diría que Súper Mario 64 para nintendo DS es odiado, pero los controles lo hacen muy inferior al original. El controlador N64 se diseñó esencialmente en torno a SM64. Pero... Portar el juego a la DS sin varios sticks analógicos... Deja mucho que desear..la verdad. Jugué y disfruté de ambos, obtuve 120 estrellas en la versión original y 147 estrellas en la versión de DS. Las adiciones de DS son geniales y vale la pena jugar si te encantan los juegos de plataformas o simplemente quieres volver a experimentar el juego que marco tu infancia, aunque no al 100%, ya que su dificultad en la versión de DS disminuye, ya que los personajes en el juego están un poco rotos, como Luigi, Casi todo en ese juego lo tienes regalado, aunque hablando de gráficos y Texturas, el de DS gana en ese aspecto :).. pero si buscan un Plataformero con buenos controles, está opción no es para ti. The original is so much better. Has more creativity. And most of all when facing Bowser, the remake only has "Bye bye" (which the Japanese version of the N64 game did use) while the old game has the famous "So long, eh-Bowser". Good thing I still have my N64 cartridge.
People say that the DS version looks "clearer" or "better". But I just don't understand the comparison of the N64 and DS textures. The big thing is that the textures in DS aren't "smeared" like they are in N64. The smear is what make the textures feel normal, like something you would recognize in real life. But in DS, it just looks unfitting a lot of the times, Mario's clean model against a heavily pixelated floor. Yes, there are some more detail in a lot of different places on DS, but the lack of a "smear" effect renders it useless to try and make detailed textures. For example, in the bowser fights in this comparison, you can see that the DS Bowser is mostly solid colors, while N64 bowser has little scales all over his body, which definitely makes him look more menacing, aside from his whack ass character model (the DS didn't make much of an improvement, he looks unnatural in the setting he's in). This is my case that Super Mario 64 DS looks like shit compared to Super Mario 64
Different times. 64 ds bowser was modeled after his current look from the gamecube era (same with all of the cast). 64 bowser is a mess of a model with "details" that shouldnt be there in the first place, but i cant blame them for trying since the 64 era was their first time modeling actual characters. Also, funny that you talk about textures looking worse on the ds version due to the 64 having bilinear texture filtering by default. The 64 has as much pixelated textures as the ds, even the average texture of a 64 game is even more pixelated than a ds one. For example on zelda ott some of the trees textures are giant literal pixels blurred to hell to make them look decent at best. People can be nostalgic, there is nothing wrong with that, but what the ds did was basically improve models, textures choices and add more content. Sure, the controls are waaaaay better on the 64 version, wont denny that, but saying that the 64 one looks better solely for the textures, is like, what the frick?

The DS version is easier than the original, bc each character have abilities and there are new power ups, whereas in the original version it doesn't.

I think the DS version is better, we get new characters, 30 new Stars, new courses, better camera positioning, improved graphics, an expanded story, minigames, and a multiplayer mode not to mention the game-breaking glitches.

Super Mario 64 DS has more modern models......BUT.
Super Mario 64 looks much cleaner and better.
The textures also look much better in the DS version, the only thing putting the DS version down is the resolution and compressed sound.

Diría una mentira si digo que el original tiene mejor estructura. Pero la época, fue uno de los primeros juego 3D y el salto de Mario 2D a 3D fue increíble. Hay algo que no tiene Mario 64 DS y que el original si lo tiene, y es el alma del juego. Esa sensación que se siente cuando te pasas el juego, de emoción, de tristeza sin la necesidad de tener una historia potente y gráficos extraordinarios.
Un juego bien desarrollado es aquel que produce sentimientos al jugador, esto se ve claramente reflejado en el original.

Versão de N64 é melhor mas temos q admitir q o outro é móvel. Ficou com boa qualidade e a diversão é garantida.
unica coisa melhor no 64 é a resolução,de resto o ds é bem melhor,modelagem,testuras,frame,o problema do ds é que a tela pequena faz com que caia muito a resolução,o ds é mais potende que um n64 em hardware

DS mops the n64 version in every way except for the resolution.
But the original is still very good.
The DS definitely loses in sound, and the Dpad is way worse than using an analog stick. The fact that the DS doesn't "smear" its textures just looks awful, especially compared to n64.

Primero, quiero aclarar algunas cosas antes de empezar: es solo mi opinión personal, y ustedes no se lo tomen tan apecho, Lee completo el comentario para entender, no seas wuebon:
No diría que Súper Mario 64 para nintendo DS es odiado, pero los controles lo hacen muy inferior al original. El controlador N64 se diseñó esencialmente en torno a SM64. Pero... Portar el juego a la DS sin varios sticks analógicos... Deja mucho que desear..la verdad.
Jugué y disfruté de ambos, obtuve 120 estrellas en la versión original y 147 estrellas en la versión de DS. Las adiciones de DS son geniales y vale la pena jugar si te encantan los juegos de plataformas o simplemente quieres volver a experimentar el juego que marco tu infancia, aunque no al 100%, ya que su dificultad en la versión de DS disminuye, ya que los personajes en el juego están un poco rotos, como Luigi, Casi todo en ese juego lo tienes regalado, aunque hablando de gráficos y Texturas, el de DS gana en ese aspecto :).. pero si buscan un Plataformero con buenos controles, está opción no es para ti.

The original is so much better. Has more creativity. And most of all when facing Bowser, the remake only has "Bye bye" (which the Japanese version of the N64 game did use) while the old game has the famous "So long, eh-Bowser".
Good thing I still have my N64 cartridge.

People say that the DS version looks "clearer" or "better". But I just don't understand the comparison of the N64 and DS textures. The big thing is that the textures in DS aren't "smeared" like they are in N64. The smear is what make the textures feel normal, like something you would recognize in real life. But in DS, it just looks unfitting a lot of the times, Mario's clean model against a heavily pixelated floor. Yes, there are some more detail in a lot of different places on DS, but the lack of a "smear" effect renders it useless to try and make detailed textures. For example, in the bowser fights in this comparison, you can see that the DS Bowser is mostly solid colors, while N64 bowser has little scales all over his body, which definitely makes him look more menacing, aside from his whack ass character model (the DS didn't make much of an improvement, he looks unnatural in the setting he's in). This is my case that Super Mario 64 DS looks like shit compared to Super Mario 64
Different times. 64 ds bowser was modeled after his current look from the gamecube era (same with all of the cast). 64 bowser is a mess of a model with "details" that shouldnt be there in the first place, but i cant blame them for trying since the 64 era was their first time modeling actual characters.
Also, funny that you talk about textures looking worse on the ds version due to the 64 having bilinear texture filtering by default. The 64 has as much pixelated textures as the ds, even the average texture of a 64 game is even more pixelated than a ds one. For example on zelda ott some of the trees textures are giant literal pixels blurred to hell to make them look decent at best.
People can be nostalgic, there is nothing wrong with that, but what the ds did was basically improve models, textures choices and add more content. Sure, the controls are waaaaay better on the 64 version, wont denny that, but saying that the 64 one looks better solely for the textures, is like, what the frick?
All of your statement is literally just nostalgia. Like the whole Bowser out of place statement. It's just because you probably grew up with the N64 version and are more used to it.

Luke alias 1uk3 I know something of which I speak. I completed both Mario 64 and it's DS equivalent, which while a good port it's controls and visuals don't compare with that of Mario 64 running on a good CRT.
