    Toro personal pace mower was making a grinding noise and would only catch half of the time when in self-propelled mode. I fixed it in this video and show you what the issue is and how to fix the toro grinding noise.

      how to replace Toro 108-9781 Arm-Pivot Rear?

    Thanks for the video it described exactly what was wrong with my model 20316 20in Recycler/Rear Bagging Lawn Mower. Found that the replacement wheels on my model now have the metal gears mounted on the wheels and require replacing the pinion gear as well. For my model 20316 the new wheel part number is 105-3036, the pinon gears are 131-5399. Buy a few snap rings 32151-61 while you're at it - you may need them.
    Thanks for the vid and hope my info is as useful as yours.

    My Toro mower had a metal gear that lost one of the teeth. The gear is riveted to the plastic part so they force you to buy a new wheel which is expensive. I was able to buy just the gear from toro. I drilled out the rivet heads and removed the bad gear, put the new one on the stems and welded the gear on the stems. I was going to try removing the rivets and putting screws in instead but the rivets wouldn't come out

    Both of my drive wheels were toed in facing the front. The bracket the wheel is screwed on was bent inward causing the wheel to be forward too much to mesh with the shaft gear causing the grinding noise and the stripping of both gears.I purchased two new shaft gears . The wheel gears looked good and I used a prybar to bend the brackets on the edge facing the front of the mower outward until they were parallel with each other with both wheels off . I put both rear wheels back on and the bending of the wheel mounting plate solved the problem ,

    I have a 22"toro rear wheel grinding like crazy so bought all parts needed to repair and for the life of me I can't get the pinion gear off. I've tried light tapping on the geaqr, using a torch etc. Nothing works and it just won't come off. Any suggestions?

    I have a 28 year old Lawnboy Gold series made by Toro where the entire belt is on the top of the deck . The belt and the 3 speed transmission have never failed in all that time and I cut a 1/4 acre once a week. Why can't they make them like that anymore? Planed obsolescence ? Except for cleaning and greasing the small drive gears so they will slip when going backwards and replacing the wheels when they wore out and split the drive train has been trouble free. What recently failed the blower housing from metal fatigue where it bolted to the engine from so many pull starts and I replaced the pull cord itself once.

    I'm getting a really strange pinging sound from the drive wheel on the left when it's engaged and in motion but not cutting.
    Thought for a while it was a loose blade, but definitely the drive wheel..
    Any idea?

    • @DIYReid
      @DIYReid  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you taken that wheel off to inspect?

    • @breaddrinker
      @breaddrinker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it looks super good in there. No worn teeth or anything out of alignment.
      I cleaned out some dirt and lubed it.
      I did notice my drive cable had somehow slipped and was effectively trying to engage the wheels even without the handle being pushed in.
      I adjusted it so it can idle without movement..
      The belt does seem a little slack. I'm wondering if the pinging I was hearing was from the drive belt being able to slip while being engaged. It only happened while moving, but.. While I see how the axle contains a crude kind of transmission in the way it rocks back and forth to tighten the belt to engage it, that belt still does look mighty loose to me.
      I don't see an obvious tensioner.

    • @breaddrinker
      @breaddrinker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DIYReid I've taken it apart three times now and seem to go further each time.
      I decided to take the whole axle out to see if the bearings were jammed up, as I wasn't getting any movement at all on the right now.
      Once I'd figured out how to free it, I could see the bearing wasn't locked at all, but the axle on the bad wheel side just pulled right out of the transmission.
      I figured it had sheared a pin or something.. But now I have it open, I find all the parts fully intact, non leaking, non worn, with the shaft pin just laying in a pool of grease stuck to the transmission case.
      Can't imagine what could have caused it to work free, and somehow also not destroy the rest of the trans..
      Looks like all it needs is a clean up and some fresh grease and liquid gasket.. Weird..

    I have metal gears on the wheels and the axle but the axle gears look bad where the wheel steel gears must be worn but they dont look worn or worn much at all. I ordered axle gears from Amazon. I know they can be installed wrong,(backward) but I will make sure I dont.

    Replaced my wheels last year on my Toro Recycler 22" after trying to just deal with poor self-propel feature for a number of years. Found your video, when to my local Toro dealer and ordered replacement wheels with those stupid cheap plastic gears. Here it is just one year later, and I've got the same problem again. It may be the last Toro mower I buy if they haven't changed their design. I've had three Toros and each time they get made cheaper and cheaper while the price keeps going up. Briggs & Stratton motor is great, the rest of the mower........meh.

      The plastic drive wheel gear was replaced eventually. You can buy conversion kits for like 50 bucks. Now if I can get rid of the side to side movement that's the real question. I tried shims and they help. But even with metal and metal, the pinion gears will strip if your applying to more torque. I would recommend only setting your drive cable tension just enough to where you can fully depress the pace to the stop, but not have excessive torque to the wheels. Uneven terrain and turning while under load puts a lot of stress on the gears

      @@DIYReid I didn't need to change the wheels because the gears looked fine. I used spacers to straighten the towed in wheel. Maybe I used too many washers and it pushed the plate out too much or the bag pins are shorter than normal.

    • @grega.7107
      @grega.7107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fixed mine, but it was just due to wear-n-tear. I didn't replace wheels, add spacers, etc. (yet). My bag bracket (metal frame) was always JUST a bit too short, and one side or the other would slip out. I CAREFULLY drilled down the center of the metal frame rod, threaded it with a tap, and added a standoff on each side, with thread-locker fluid. the standoff is something like this: www.amazon.com/Small-Parts-310806HMA-Aluminum-Male-Female/dp/B07K35LV62/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=threaded+standoff&qid=1617643299&sr=8-2 . I had some laying around that worked. It's very easy to destroy your bag frame if you screw up, so don't.
