  • If your self propelled is not working on your Toro Personal Pace Push Lawn Mower it could be either the self propelled drive belt or the cable could be frozen if the mowers been out in the weather for extended period of time. Of course the wheels could be stripped or Transmission could be bad too. I don't cover those in this video.

    WTF was Toro thinking? Square head screws? I've got a pretty damned decent home shop and I've never needed square head tools in 60 years, Thank god for Amazon. Or Jeff B.
    Also, I'm pretty sure I had a Personal Pace mower for a few years that had all this accessible from the top. It had an aluminum deck, maybe that was the difference.

    My toro which I love so much has the opposite issue. The self propel will not disengage! Thinking of following your tutorial just to ensure no gunk is blocking anything. Have you ever encountered this?!

      Yes there could be some grass built up and it's causing it to not release all the way... Definitely work looking at. Did you replace the belt recently? A short belt would cause that too..

    Ok, here is some critical information, for those of us, with an electric/pull start system, and the black battery box on the deck of the mower. Ok, YES, there is a bolt underneath the box. But, it is towards the back of the mower, and you will see a slightly raised section of the box, that does not touch the deck, but sit's above it, about 1/4-3/8". The bolt you have to access is, literally in that notch, towards the backside of the black box/mower. And, I have found, that the box is riveted to the deck. So, for full access, you will have to rip the box off of the top of the deck, revealing 2 of the 3 bolts, as the 2nd bolt is, along the left side of the black battery box, just underneath the side front corner. But, if you are able to remove all of the plastic covers off of the back, including the flapper, for the bag. As, the top of the flapper for the bag hatch, is literally what has you blinded from seeing the bolt in the first place, besides the battery box itself. And, since I can't start it with the key anymore(Long story short, the cable harness was ripped out of the key starter switch, and ruined it), so it's pretty useless to me, at the moment. So, I decided to just rip the black box itself off. Which, made it much more simpler to access all 3 bolt's, for the plastic belt guard underneath. Also, it is a good idea to take a plastic bag(Walmart bags will do fine), and use it underneath the gas cap, by taking the cap off, then draping the bag(Double layer, by using whole bag) over the open hole, then screw the cap back on, and you now have a sealed gas cap, from leaking...

      OOH! So either the transmission is not transferring power to the wheels or it might be broken. Don't try this with the engine running! weight down the handle so it stays on the ground and the mower is up in the air. REMOVE the spark plug wire from the spark plug and move it away from the spark plug (and make sure it stays away). Then put a clamp (or tie a string) on both handles to squeeze them into the self propelled position so you can spin the blade by hand. See what's turning... if the axle shaft is turning then the engine then your transmission is fine and it's in the wheels.

    Now mines will engage when I squeeze my handles belt spinning and everything but my tires not moving, what would cause this problem?

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      HI... if you flip the mower on it's side (Muffler side down/ piston at top dead center) and remove the spark plug... Can you squeeze the handle and see the cable pulling the transmission and tightening the belt? Ive seen some mowers get clogged up with grass so the transmission won't engage... Also take a look at the axle shafts while you're turning the engine by hand... are they turning? It'll only be a little bit... If the engine is turning and the transmission is engaged, but the axles aren't turning, then you might have a transmission problem... I wouldn't go there just yet though.

    How would I know if it's a cable issue? I took the machine apart and the belt looks fine. Mower is only about 3 years old and only used on my house, not commercial use. Just isn't self propelling. Good video, btw.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can physically turn the transmission to see if the wheels engage (obviously with the mower off!)... I don't remember if this one has a lever on the transmission or not to engage it, I'd have to go back through the video to see if I see that. Some do, some just engage when the transmission is pulled back by the cable. If the transmission is working fine, then it has to be either the cable or the belt..

    • @JLPicard440

      HI! I would disconnect the belt and manually turn the transmission pulley by hand with the wheels on the ground. See if you feel slippage inside the transmission. It's difficult to diagnose something like that without being able to see it.. Some mowers have a lever where the cable engages to actually engage the transmission. IF yours does, then make sure that lever is engaged when you do the test.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It sounds like the cable is pulling in the wrong direction. If you know how to properly turn the mower on it's side (so you don't get oil in the muffler (carburetor up and piston at TDC on compression stroke)) so you can see what's going on, push the pace bar forward and see if the cable is loose... If so, it's probably in the wrong hole somewhere down the line. Meaning it's pushing instead of pulling. I'm just guessing though.

    • @ryan6391
      @ryan6391 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JLPicard440 I ended up with that same result and noticed I connected the top of the cable to the metal bar that shuts off the mower. The metal bar has a hole on both sides of the handle so I automatically thought it went there when it goes on the plastic piece under the handle bar like he shows in the video.
