    this is how i fixed my toro lawnmower gear from stripping from the pinion. thanks to the many forums and other videos offering tips i grouped together to figure this out.
    p.s. i broke the shims down to size after the video by simply snapping them into place. also the noise you hear at the end while turning the wheel is the washer clinking, not the gear/pinion

    Hi, I had the same exact problem with mine. I bought the mower from a yard sale for $10. They told me about the left wheel was clicking when it ran last. I replaced the wheels, gears, mounting plate, bearings and finally the bearing cups. Still had the clicking issue. So, I discovered after watching this video that there is too much play at the end of the axle. The axle mics at .495, the bearing cup mics out at .690. so, I went to Lowes and bought 2- 1/2 id 5/8 od 1" long steel bushings. I had to take a 1/16" off of the outside of the bushings to make them fit. I used my 1/2' bolt and my bench grinder and light pressure. I let the bushing spin on the bolt and ran the bushing back and forth so it was even across. Once the bushings fit I ground off the end of the bushing so they would fit with in the bearing cups. I lightly coated the bushings with grease and reassembled. Now, The mower works like it should with no clicking and runs great! I hope this helps someone else with this problem!

    I had same problem and noticed bringing in wheel closer to gear fixed the problem. Found your video and you confirmed it for me. Thank you!! However shimming the plate (2 bolts) is a much better fix. You cannot adjust mower mower deck height with your fix.

    update - 2 years later and this fix is still working, doing 2 lawns a week with it with no issues

    Hey hippa2. Your video is very similar to mine. Glad your mower is working well for you!
    For me...I'm so glad I got rid of this head ache. Sold my Toro last week. I tried all of the things you did in your video at one point or another. The fix would last for a few weeks, but then the grinding would come back. As some folks have mentioned, sounds like the proper way to fix it would be to replace the bushings. But after putting $150 worth of parts into mine, I was DONE. So funny to see those paint sticks in there. I had them in mine for a while too. Then I replaced them with gold nuts that were the same thickness. Looked a little better. When I sold the mower last week, the grinding noise was gone, but I did explain the grinding problem to the buyer to give full and honest disclosure of the issue. Great mower. I just wish Toro would design it better. Had I known about the bushings, I would have replaced them too when I tool the whole thing apart and replaced the transmission, drive belt, and added the washers behind the black plate and added the extra washer to the axle behind the pinion gear like you did. The mower might have been worth keeping. Oh well. Like I said, my head ache is gone. Was so tired of fixing that thing. All the best man!

      thanks for sharing that story. yah man it drove me nuts at first i pried open the transmission thinking for sure all the gears inside were busted apart or something and it was fine. so then i had to reseal it hoping i didnt just destroy a expensive part haha. so far everythings held up thank god. still cutting 2 yards a week with it. dunno how long that paint stick will last but whenever it rots or breaks or whatever ima go to home depot and get another and jam it back in there haha. i really think the main issue is the bowing

    Dude you may have saved me. I have the same problem with my Honda hrr216vka. Stupid design wheels are Wobbly in the back and now a cliques and makes noises and it doesn't catch. With your idea I might be able to fix it. Thank you so much for making this video. I really think your idea might work for me. 😁👍

    Hi im going through the same thing now, tore tranny appart gears where fine, cables are fine, belts are good , axle seemed to have extra on left side when assembled , probably a quality control issue with stamping process, was thinking the same idea as person with nut at back side of wheel bolt on your comments , will try it tommorow

      if you do exactly what i did in the video it should fix the problem unlesss things have been grinded down and need replaced first like the plastic wheel. currently this fix still works for me with no issues, i still cut my moms lawn and then mine up the street every week and even the abandoned lot next to me. you just gotta make sure you bow it out enough to make it turn properly. the paint stick and etc ended up perfect for me but you may need to add something extra or less etc. good luck!

    Thanks for the great video. I tried this (washers instead of wooden shims) on my Toro today and it locked the rear wheels and neither of them would spin when the self propelled was engaged. I'm wondering if I shimmed it too much and is keeping the pinions from spinning naturally. I removed the shims and everything is back to normal now. May try again with less washers.

  • @hippa2dahoppa2

    to anyone wondering, you can get a idea of how much you need to space the gap with the wedge by using a flathead screwdriver and pushing the mount outwards first to see how much of a gap needs to be filled and rolling the tire at the same time. i wedged the paint mix stick in and tapped it in with a hammer as far as it would go and then pulled sideways on it after the video to break it off so it would be a shim basically. so far 2 months later and the lawnmower still works like brand new from this mod. i also adjusted the throttle cable and now the self propel moves so good it barely feels like im pushing it. i have a bad rib, so fixing the self propel took alot of stress off my body. i cut 2 lawns a week with it and its doing great. hope this helps!

    6:43 All the shim seems to be doing is pushing out the wheel further and distorting the angle so the gears do not line up parallelly. The washer seems like a good idea though as that pushes out the gear. I have a model with all metal gears and haven't had problems with slipping but they do rattle a lot on the left side so I'll try your advice.

    • @hippa2dahoppa2
      @hippa2dahoppa2  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its actually the opposite, the shim is making it line up more, since by factory error default it starts bending the wrong way. i think a little rattling is ok, the wheels should naturally have a tiny bit of movement. the stripping and wheel popping is mainly what this fixes. ive talked to other people who replaced plastic gear wheels with metal gear wheels and they also confirmed that unless you align the piece like i did, it will just re strip everything. if yours isnt stripping or popping, then a washer would prob make it a little better just for the rattling. sometimes rattling is just natural. ive had some really old lawnmowers that the middle screw holding the tire on was wearing the middle out so much that it rattled and wobbbled until they broke but it was a cheap replacement at the time.

      Does not "appear" that way but I'm not there. I tried your washer idea on the gear and it increased the contact somewhat so I'll leave it for a while then inspect in the fall. Mine came all metal on an older model and I just stumbled on your video here but don't have this problem or a way to adjust it as you suggest with the shim. But it is something to look out for on a future model, but to be honest think I'll go all electric next time. All this stink is a pain and I get tired of having to shower after to get all the exhaust residue off me. BTW I just cleaned the carburetor and what a difference whoah, no puff of smoke upon startup. Starts first pull one pump.

      @@noglu106 I have different wheels, the metal ones. However, I tried your idea for a couple mows and now the gears whine on that left wheel. I'll have to check the diagrams and see if all the washers etc are in the right sequence. Feeling kinda dumb for following video advice.

    Can you please link me to the forum topic? I am having an issue with my Father's 20333 lawn mower. Just bought him his second set of wheels. Want to correct the issue before it destroys another plastic wheel gear.

      sorry for the late response, i dont remember the link to the forum but i recall there was multiple ones i found when searching. i also had read reviews on places like amazon who were selling these tires and the people had talked about issue.
      its prob to late now but using a washer to push the pinion out and wedging some shims behind the plate like i showed in the video has worked for me for 2 years now

    • @Guillotines_For_Globalists

      Those pinion gears are loosey goosey. Actually, it's more like the axle shafts are loose. There is a lot of in and out play from the transmission. Not sure why they built it this way.
      The older Toro mowers had their share of transmission issues. Those problems have just been traded for another, equally expensive issue. The wheels are about as pricey as the transmissions was for the old Toros. Not much difference here.
      OH, and the new transmission is plastic - I also discovered that my father's mower had the bracket that the personal pace drive cable comes to start to pull out of the transmission. Metal screws in to plastic threaded holes. SMART, Toro. What a piece of junk. Pulled out so far that his personal pace would not engage at all.

    The other issue you have is you are aligning the gear with the white backing plate off which will move the wheel out 1/4 inch or less.

    • @hippa2dahoppa2
      @hippa2dahoppa2  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the white backing plate doesnt make a difference, the reason is because in the middle of the white place is a washer that stays in the middle, you can actually take that washer off as a test. most people dont know its there because it usually fits snug onto it and looks like its actually built into the white piece. so the white plate isnt important for testing, but using the washer from that plate is

    FWIW, if you remove the wheel mounting plate and remove the bearing retainer housing, you will find that the bearing inner race is loose (bearings worn out) and the axle bushing (made of PLASTIC!) is worn out. This combination allows the drive gear to move away from the rear wheel gear. Also the rear wheel will wear where it rides on the shoulder bolt. Add that to the mix and the gears will pop and grind. The correct fix is to replace the wheels, pinion gears, rear wheel bearings and axle bushings. Cost for all is about $70 - $80 and it takes about an hour with basic hand tools. This will fix it and it will last years. FWIW, the wheels can be had for as about $28 on Amazon. The other parts are even less.

    • @hippa2dahoppa2
      @hippa2dahoppa2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all that stuff is going to wear right back out if you dont pop the piece outwards like i did in the video. trust me. i spent alot of money that i didnt need to spend. what i did in the video has lasted with no issues ever since i uploaded it. cut 2 home lawns a week with it and still is going good. ive done alot of research on this, alot of videos and alot of forums. its a known defect that the piece i bend out bows and makes everything unlined and grind away. until you straighten it to where it should be its just going to wear all those pieces right back out again.

      @ianliam247 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you are right in everything you are saying that is the correct way to do this I have same problem and yes in the video that would do a quick fix. parts are cheap for the bearing sleeve excetera but as I'm in the UK it becomes very expensive shipping cost.cost more than the parts no good I'm trying to find a cheaper solution or an alternative part to replace the worn out bushes and sleeve

    You need to get the wheels with the metal teeth (gears) for starters. Look up TORO Drive Wheels 20011 20025 20442 20035 on ebay.

    • @hippa2dahoppa2
      @hippa2dahoppa2  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that wont work, until you bend the piece outward like i did it will eat through those teeth weather plastic or metal. believe me i tried it lol. so far this fix has worked ever since i posted the video. in some cases the metal teeth might work, but from my research if you dont bow that plate out its going to continue to ruin all your new parts

    I had this issue with the metal gears. After removing all parts on the left gear side I found a broken ring clip (c-clamp). Replaced this and everything is perfect.
