- "Jolene" is a Dolly Parton cover, and the second video we ever filmed. Our early days were a steep learning curve! For sound quality, we tried recording the sound in our living room on separate microphones before filming the video using a microphone as a prop, for a focal point. You can already hear the difference from our first video, "No Roots," which we tried filming live with a single microphone: • No Roots - The Peterse... .

►LYRICS - Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene
He talks about you in his sleep
And there's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene
Now I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Now you could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can [x2]
Please don't take him even though you can

Thanks Liz! TH-cam should give you the option to pin more than one comment.
Hi Liz. I found these videos where the pinned comment with the lyrics of the song is missing:
1) Come Ye Sinners
2) Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior
3) Joy To The World
4) I'll Be Home for Christmas
5) Bohemian Rhapsody
6) Near The Cross
7) Blue
8) Silent Night
9) Me Too
@@Roberto-pd8vn Most of those had gone 😮. Thank you so much much for going through everything, I really do appreciate it ❤️
@@Liz.Newton Oh imagine! It was a real pleasure! Thank you too for what you always do! 👍
😊😊
My family can’t even sit in the same room
Give everyone a banjo.
Same here...And noone is half as gorgeous or talented
Nice moment of sweetness
and then depression when reality strikes back :)
That's because their egos don't speak through instruments =P
truth.
lol!!!!!! mine too. We all hate each other
Tha mama in the back on the bass. I see you. Solid work there. Class.
Yesss 😂
Mama slaps.
@@Srfingfreak She solidly slaps. She's the backbone of this whole gorgeous rendition of this fabulous song.
@@aussieevonne7857 and she is proud. And she shall be! ;) Isn't being the backbone the whole thing about a mother?
Reminds me of a local bluegrass group. My friends mom is on the upright bass.
In a live chat that you did a few days ago, I wrote "regrets from Chile", because my command of the English language is very fragile and I wanted to write "greetings from Chile". My name is Diego, I'm from a small city in the south of Chile, Valdivia, and you are on all my playlists. A hug from distance
Mama is back there killing the bass ❤️
no solo either :( ... pappy Petersen must be the roady... to carry that XXL fiddle for his wife...
It's always the smallest person playing the largest instrument...
Fat licks by Karen
Never even saw her till you said that lol.
Slappin da bass - Paul Rudd
I have only one criticism here: The girl who sings has absolutely nothing to fear from Jolene 🥰
You're right! Talented and beautiful! A fantastic combination!
Nothing at all.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
All four of the women are very lovely, and that gives you an idea how badass Jolene is
My thought, exactly :D
Mom in the back, giving up the spotlight, keeping everyone together, as a good momma should. Beautiful.
Mom on the Double Bass is a nice touch
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST COVER OF THIS SONG.
Mom ruling the bass. Just as Moms do. Doing the invisible work. Version of the song brought tears to my eyes. Awesome version.
It's all about the base
i was hoping for this comment to pop up! loved Mom on that bass, and got teared up too , just beautiful.
AneBanane73 Moms hardest job 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"Doing the invisible work." Beautiful.
Before the Bass, She played one Mean Mandolin,,,
The fella on the dobro has some serious skills
Not to forget the guitar, he's what is called smooooth.
YEAH he can really wang that thing
first thing i thought - second was how good the lead singer is
First thing I thought too. Guy is killing it 👍
Yes they absolutely do.
Years on this is still one of the best things I have ever heard on the internet.
Oh my god this group is amazing. Singing a song written before they were born and I’m sure Dolly would love it.
Dolly would have to be proud if she saw this.
What precision.
I like how this soccer mom is casually on a bass in the background
Yes, she's so great. Lucky kids with such nice mother.
That mum in the back is on POINT, I love it!
That was wonderful. Real music.
Great Stand-Up Bass Mom !!!!
Agreed! Great up-country thumpin'. Loved all the other band members as well.
Yes! "Get it Mama"!! Great job!
Mom should be very proud of her family......great talent.
My mama would hit me with a wooden spoon when I didn't mind her. Imagine her hitting you with that stand up bass.
Not just another pretty face, Mom was roc'n that bass.
Quarantine with this family would be heavenly
You'd spend ages trying to pull hairs out of the showerplug. And they look like the kind of people who leave behind bottles of shampoo that have a tiny, tiny little bit of shampoo left. You'd go mad eventually.
You'd end up insane mate
Until they lock you in the basement and eat your arms
They belong to the same family ?
My Daddy used to have me sing this song when I was just a little girl. I wanted to grow up & be Jolene with flaming locks of auburn hair, ivory skin and eyes of emerald green.
Thank you for a wonderful memory
This is one of the most astonishing cover song I've ever seen
The guitar guy in the back has the exact same facial expressions as Elvis Presley
I had the same thought immediately.
I noticed that too!!!!!
By Jove, you're right!
also kind of a JFK vibe imo
I know right😂
I've got really good headphones and when mom drops the bass it's epic.
Logan Newman same. Have the skullcandy crushers with the amp built in and had my head vibrating lol
BraaapAllDay You don’t have good headphones.
The one with golden hair gives so much "Elsa" vibes. Such a lovely voice.
Brother on dobro is so quite and stays in background but is super talented and adds so much to the group.
Mama, you must be so proud. You and papa did an awesome job with the kids! Two thumbs up!
What I was thinking, too.
Call it a million thumbs up.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yay ! Young people playing real instruments and singing without auto tune.
Outstanding !
Agreed, assuming this video shoot is also the actual sound recording (the parts could have been recorded separately and processed afterwards). I'm not calling anyone out on this by the way - it's a great performance. The dobro player is exceptional, too.
F...k autotune. Real singers and musicians do not need it! Freedom from abuse of technology.
The music is in the soul. Period.
Howard's Guitar Covers you can tell it’s pre recorded, there’s no vocal swells moving around the room while singing. Doesn’t take away from how well it sounds though, they did a great job
@@gmangsxr750 Yes, my reply to the OP was more to do with whether they'd used autotune. I couldn't detect any, and I hope it wasn't used.
Gary Richter I also wondered with the banjo in a spot or 2
This family is surly a gift from God, amen
Every instrument, every voice fits there, it´s AWESOME.
With our future so uncertain, it's great to see families keeping Bluegrass Music alive and thriving!!!
THOSE HARMONIES ARE FREAKIN' IMPECCABLE AND I HAVE CHILLS
Right.
Holy smoke!! Ik surely hope y'all still are making great music together.. really really really nice
Of course they still make great music together! They play regularly in Branson, Missouri, and other towns in the USA. And sometimes they tour Europe! This is their latest video published three days ago: th-cam.com/video/ZN2Xp-iyMWo/w-d-xo.html
Great bass player! You go, girl!
So so love mom in the back rockin the stand up bass! ❤️
Yep thinking the same 😊
I thought that. Just doing her thing...
To the Mom, I can only imagine how proud you are. You guys sound Great.
Best version of this I have ever heard. Great vocals and music skill.
They are Great!!
Love it.
Some of the loveliest harmonies come from family collaboration. This family plays beautifully and they sing so well together.❤
Mexican dude here. This is not my style of music and I dont know how I got here but I'm glad I did. The talent of these folks is undeniable.
I don't know how I got here but I ain't leaving.
Same here, love from holland!
I was looking at sump pumps and somehow found myself here.. one of the beauties of the internet!!
You goddamn right
Me too
I know exactly what have brought me here, a long blond hair... but I ain't leaving either, I'm staying for the great song! Awesome family singing!!!
Dolly has Celtic ancestors (Welsh to be exact). This is song is as Celtic as you can get. Even down to the description of Jolene with her red hair and emerald green eyes. It's a homage to the incredible beauty Celtic women possess. I hope Dolly has heard this beautiful version of her famous song. I like how mom holds the bass down in the pocket like a rock too. Well done, guys!
Beautiful performance, shout out to mom on the bass, perfect 😊
nashville should be out there finding people like this and letting them do their thing, rather than picking people out of hollywood and telling them how to best imitate pop.
Nashville would ruin down to earth bluegrass bands like these. I say the best way to make real music is to stay as far from Nashville as possible.
Man, do you have that right!
Amen!
buTTer You got that right! Watched it starting downhill years ago before I left it in ‘96...Way back then I was preaching to independents I came across in my studio that the Internet was going to become the biggest tool to help independents-all one had to do was to work hard at it. Many didn’t want to do the work but play “star”...😊
Ain't this the truth!
Glad to see bluegrass is alive and well among young folk. I love it👏❗️
I just want to say! This is one of my favorites. I love everything about it, sound mixing. And of course, the execution of my favorite song Jolene. Guys excellent work! Also, lady on bass killed it!!! 💓
This is just perfection. From the arrangement, to the perfect time and driving rhythm, the reprise, instrumental solos, and lead and harmony vocals. The slide guitar riffs are just amazing. The mix is just right too. Perfection. Hats off to you for an amazing performance of a great classic song.
Hmm good song done well.
Mix. Can hear solos and melody with good musicality. Voices well balanced. Well done all.
My two year old daughter has kept asking for this video for ten days, once every evening after dinner : "Jolene Jolene on the phone." Then she comments about each instrument, and also "this is the mum".
So much that my wife and I now have to refuse, in spite of how much I love it. You have a tiny huge fan in France. :)
That's amazing, you can be proud, imagine if she was asking for Cardi B.
kartofff this is great substance for your daughter, definitely not cardi B lol
The unsung hero of this song is the dobro. Absolutely fantastic music!
Emmett Franz is incredible!
Yes! Emmett just makes that dobro 'sing'! Ellen Petersen's singing is just out of this world! Put it all together and there is just one amazing synergy!

Beautiful. What a talented family. Thank you for posting this.

LOL
LMAO!!
If it happened to me, I would be pleased to do the business side.
How is this entire family so beautiful and talented? Genetics are really at work here
Samsara Lotus - Blessings from GOD. Good generations xxxxxxxxxx
Definitely right, my family is pretty genetically connected with naturally able to learn guitar but we suck at singing lol
@@CharlieRootsMusic sounds about right, we've got all sorts of guitarists and pianists and whatnot-ists, but we only ever got one singer!

Mom with Double Bass, omg isn't she lovely???❤❤ You guys are just amazing. Love from India.
Super job on this great song by Dolly Parton. 😀
I'm addicted to this new version
Awesome - there's nothing fake here. All sheer talent as it's supposed to be.
OH ya!
Nothing fake, 'cept it wasn't recorded live.. You don't get stereo spread from a single large-diaphram condenser.
@@therealandrewlund You realize they do make stereo microphones. And certain studio mics have the ability to change the pickup pattern. Some of these mics come from companies like Sennheiser, Neumann and others.
@@jimvandemoter6961 Yes, but you can see the mic used in the vid was a single element, non-stereo mic. Don't get me wrong, they sound great. The sound is just a little more processed than most realize.
@@therealandrewlund is correct. It's a single (mono) cable coming from the mic. And while the pickup pattern can definitely be changed on some mics, the resulting output is still a mono signal.
Perhaps recorded live originally, but the audio heard was not recorded when the video was shot.
Some notes:
No idea why this was in my recommended.
Not my type of music.
No fan of cover versions.
Reckon I just sat here and watched it 20 times over.
Astonishingly good.
It's great to step outside the comfort zone occasionally 😊
Better a good cover than a bad original ;-)
Just goes to show, there's only two kinds of music, good, and bad! This is the good stuff!!
It is unfortunate you can't appreciate talent where you can actually understand the words being sung
me too!
The instrument is called the Dobro, and as far as I can tell from people who seem to know Emmett is probably the best there is at it. All I know is he's amazing!
That feels quite right, because in Polish „dobro” means „goodness” 😊
Well done to the parents/mother for bringing up such a lovely musical family. The mother should have stood proudly at the forefront of this wonderful family band!

Whoever was in charge of micing this up and mixing it, you did a stellar job. That bass.
@chief tp yeah, there's no way this was recorded in that room with one mic, but their sync to the recording was impressive too
@@RafaelNelvam The mic in the video is an AKG C214, which is a cardioid mic and that has its (golden) capsule facing the camera, so (in the video) they are singing from the *back* of the microphone. That would make the sound even worse.

Wow! Thank you so much for all the love you have shown our family in this video! Just to answer some of the most common questions...
We are all a family except for our dear friend, Emmett Franz, on the dobro. And yes, he is amazing.
The sound was recorded in our living room that morning through a Behringer X32 Rack with the recording expansion. We used a single microphone for a prop in the video for a focal point. We are very new to filming videos and this seemed like the best option at the time. We recorded No Roots live with a single microphone and you can hear the difference.
Love all the song requests! Keep 'em coming!
As much as we would LOVE to travel more, we perform full-time in Branson, MO. We do have select tour dates which can be found on our website: www.petersenband.com.
Absolutely incredible
xxxx Praise the Lord xxxx
Both songs (this and No Roots) are fantastic covers. I love the variety. Recording this through the Behringer rack but keeping the prop mic was a very good idea. You can absolutely hear the difference. If I ever find myself in Branson I'll be sure to make it a point to see y'all.
I love the name, but hey I am biased.

Edit: Actually everyone is!
I’m quite a fan of the clarity of the mandolin as a mandolin player myself...
More love for bass mom!
I just love seeing an actual upright bad . So many groups use an electric . Even the more bluegrass typ groups
Yes....it is that the bass that 'drives' this piece! It is incredible! I love the different rhythms that the bass creates through-out the piece. The bass is the 'glue' for the whole thing! The song turns 'electric' when that big bass comes in! 'GET IT MAMA'! That is the name of her fan club on Facebook.
Glenn Ericksen couldn't agree more! :)
WOW! nice voices or you family or what ever all wonderful keep up the good work you all✌🙏
Bravo bravo bravo bravo 1 million Bravos for this beautiful cover . I only give permission for this family to ever sing this song ! ❤❤❤
They most impressive part is they all know how to not step on top of each other. They understand real balance. I’m impressed!
I love the song, I believe this is a dub of a recording. Watch 0:50 closely and her lips do not move while the vocal track is playing. Just interesting. Great regardless, but this is a mix not a live performance. One mic wouldn't capture such a great mix.
@@deepmage7174 I think they record sound and video separately. And then merge them together. Hence the slight asynchrony.
