    Good video. I was almost afraid to watch, given your boss’ Tesla fandom.
    That suspension is worth the cost. I’ve driven mine hard and the handling is world class GT.
    Important to remember 2 things -
    1) the Air was designed to be built by hand in the small factory Lucid started with. 2.7million sq Ft expansion opens in ‘24
    2) The Air is not trying to be an economical every-man’s car. The Gravity SUV, out next year, will share many components, but is intended for volume production.
    Can’t wait for the upcoming tear down.

      Yes, I was thinking the same. However I don't understand how the virtual ball joint changes the pivot point for steering. It seems to me that it only would affect the pivot point for the up/down motion of the suspension.

  • @dotancohen
    @dotancohen ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There is another benefit to the dual ball joints on the lower and upper control arms. Each ball joint is supporting half the weight. Not only does this make them more reliable, but it also makes a ball joint failure far less unsafe.

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 ปีที่แล้ว

      A ball joint failure is still a major suspension failure causing loss of control. More joints means a greater probability of that failure... although join failure with competent design, reasonable joint quality, and even minimal maintenance is very rare.

    • @dotancohen
      @dotancohen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brianb-p6586 A ball joint failure is a major suspension failure, possibly causing loss of control, but not actually often in practice. You might want to take a look at the Just Rolled In youtube channel, you'll see so much suspension damage - including broken, rusted, and improvised ball joints. Sadly, and I say this from working at a garage, ball joint failures are far more common than you might expect. And people continue driving on them, even after failure.

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dotancohen Yes, some fail; as a fraction of the vehicles in use, the failure rate is tiny. I'm an auto enthusiast, and I don't personally know anyone who has ever had even one fail; of course in a shop you'll see more, but by that standard everything is crap that fails all of time, because everything has needed repair in some shop, somewhere, at some point.
      The failure of an "improvised" ball joint has nothing to do with the reliability of what an auto manufacturer produces. Yes, I've seen online images of the ridiculous junk that some people try to use, but that has nothing to do with the reliability of the suspension built by Lucid.

    Interesting to begin to see the real facts on the Lucid. Munro and his gang will reveal the good, the bad, and the ugly before they are thru. First big issue i see is how tight things are packaged. As pointed out, it's a trade off to be that tight. I can see why production ramping would be hard. And Lucid doesn't make most of their castings and such. There are several there that would be tough to get just in time shipping to work with. Will be fun when they start to actually take this beast apart.

    Cool, i have wanted you guys to look at a lucid since their first deliveries. I may have missed it in the video, but will you be doing a full tear down? Not ever car you put on the hoist gets one. I am hoping you plan on working your magic on this one 😊

    Can you mention how low to the ground this car sits? It's almost like a supercar. I parked next to one the other day...way low. How does that effect the suspension?

    Great video. Should there not be some form of barrier (a vented plastic panel maybe), between the front wheel and the rear of the radiator and fan? Seems a vulnerable point to leave exposed to all the debris flying forward off the front wheel?

    Can’t wait for the Lucid tear down. This companies seems to have the best EV tech, better than Tesla. But they haven’t gotten the manufacturing figured out yet. Hope they become a real volume EV maker and a competitor.

      They seem to have SOME of the best EV tech..... "Better than" Po****e (for instance?)
      .
      If you mean competitor to Tesla..... Unlikely.
      (Will they ever make more than 2 million vehicles per year?)
      Competitor to "German brands"? Much more likely.
