Have to be careful not to bring your legs together after the switch kick even just for a slight moment because that is the time u could get countered

nugget22 gil exactly. If you turn your hips over properly you will not hit the elbow. Dutch style 45 degree kick often can kick the elbow but with thai kick u hit forearms or side of arm. ... or liver, of ribs... lol

You can actually kick the elbow even that way, but it will be sideways. Elbows will be pointed downward while your shin will connect with it sideways, avoiding the tip of opponent elbow.
